      Atheism makes both harder, because, despite of releasing us from oppression, it also strips us of things such as hope, meaning, etc. And I say this as an atheist. A sad atheist.
      edit: I think I meant "repression" when I wrote "oppression", but I'll leave it like that.

    This video is the reason my girlfriend and I are dating right now. At 1:47 I heard what he had to say and I quickly paused the video and asked the girl out that I really liked and she said she felt the same way about me. She was hoping I'd ask her out. 2 days after I asked her out a guy at her work asked her out, she smiled and replied "sorry but im already dating". Thank you so much for saving our relationship, she really does mean the world to me. This video changed my life :)

    A lack of ultimate purpose does not imply a lack of proximate purpose. Besides, if you just continue existing forever after death, what is the purpose in that? At some point, you'd have accomplished anything that you wanted to. Remember, this is literally eternity. The prospect of ceaseless existence sounds horrifying. Would it be nice if maybe we had a few hundred years to live instead of a few decades? Maybe. But living forever doesn't even appeal to me, I don't know why anyone would even want that.

    • @K3wlG33k
      @K3wlG33k 10 лет назад +13

      Neither do I. Even though, I can understand why one would be inclined to such an idea, initially. However, people can be way too short-sighted that they just overlook the long-term consequences. Just because they only know what _they_ want, they easily ignore the future outcomes of their choices/beliefs.

    • @prototypeatheist
      @prototypeatheist 10 лет назад +2

      K3wlG33k Agreed. Even when I was a Christian, I never bothered to amalgamate all of my knowledge with what I claimed to believe to be true religiously. It never even occurred to me to reconcile the secular with the religious. It isn't surprising that people can believe in things which they haven't fully considered.

    • @AEL-codeNchill
      @AEL-codeNchill 10 лет назад +2

      Because usually we (humans) don't understand the meaning of eternal , we didn't evolve to understand big numbers so when you tell people that have no math background "you're going to live for eternity" they usually think that they're going to live for a long time that's why they buy to religious nonsense.

    • @TylerDurdentyler2020
      @TylerDurdentyler2020 10 лет назад +4

      Can you imagine having to worship a blood thirst killer from the old testament?
      Religious people say they do not know the mind of god (and their fairy tale book says yes and no and contradicts it self on this matter) and then they say no one knows who enters the heavens or not.
      On this case, I guess if Bin Laden was considered not guilt, they would be happy to live with him for eternity in heaven.

    • @prototypeatheist
      @prototypeatheist 10 лет назад +3

      Tyler Durden Indeed, most Abrahamic theists will claim that belief in Jesus as the messiah is the only requirement for entry into heaven, and the Bible supports this claim, regardless of how illogical it is that non-belief is the only unforgivable act. But then, oftentimes, when you ask them to defend such a stance, they indeed will claim that they don't know the mind of God and that they are not the judges. Well, in that case, I'm not too worried about being an atheist.

    I'm fucking terrified of death man.
    Not like panicking and losing control over myself, but when I think about it theoretically and realizing that I'm not going to know what will happen to my family and friends in the future and where will the human race go...
    Also not knowing where will technology go and how will it affect our lives, what will become of artificial intelligence and all of that sci-fi things. Basically the idea of me not knowing new things and stopping to learn freaks me out, it's pretty selfish but genuinely this is what instinctively jumps to my mind- that I'm not going to be around and that I'm not going to know everything.
    This is why I like to fantasize about a superphysical computer that will calculate the future (and past) by deterministic principles of the universe, or in a more practical way I'm seriously considering to contribute to the development of a technology that can upload the human mind into a computer (so we'll be immortal).

      I get what you're saying, and I've thought about it myself.
      But I'm fine with being asleep or being under anesthesia because I know I'll wake up eventually. I'm even fine with being in a comma in a preserving machine for 2000 years, as long as I wake up.
      When I'll die of course I won't mind (because I'm... dead), or before I was born. But as soon as I became alive and started making memories, there's no turning back.
      I'm not afraid of being dead, I'm afraid to stop being alive- to stop collecting new experiences.

    As a Funeral Director who is also an Atheist, I applaud you for this explanation. I often talk about 'legacy '. I think that that's the important part. Even at the funerals of young adults, gone too soon, their legacy is palpable. I can learn an awful lot about a family's dynamic and the kinds of things that really matter to the deceased. The things they will be remembered for. It's a really beautiful and humbling experience.

      Steyn it terrifies me at least. If I had the choice to live forever, I would take it. Because to me, life itself is the ultimate "heaven". You take the good of the mystical "heaven" and the bad of "hell" and you get life. There is nothing in your life that time can't heal. I would be willing to stay until the eventual heat death of the universe.

    • @ThatPinkOtter

      Reality is just that, wishful thinking and irrational beliefs will not, and will never change reality. The only thing that changes reality is physically doing something, creating a church? Yes, that changes the world around us... But sitting in it and chanting? That accomplishes nothing when it is directed to what would be your god, the reason: Believing in something simply doesn't change anything.
      If you want to make a positive change in the world, do it yourself... Don't pray and do nothing... Don't tell others that Death is only the beginning when you don't know, and don't discredit a scientific theory as if it's some third grader's book report, the people who went about to prove this have done more in their lifetime than you ever will sitting and praying.
      I wish people would see things from the other's perspective, I don't hate religion, I hate religious people who refuse to let others hold their own beliefs or disbeliefs and as the OP said here I think we should mention death as another thing that they refuse let us as atheists accept simply because they can't.

    All atheists don't neccessarily think there is no sort of afterlife, reincarnation, etc. It's like how atheists can still believe in the supernatural, even though it's just as wacky as theism.

    • @BillRoyMcBill

      It's weird that a lot of atheists do make blanket statements about what "we" believe and aren't allowed to believe and still call ourselves atheists.

      Technically true, yes. Buddhism, for example, is an atheistic religion.

      I said that they CAN believe in spirits and the supernatural and alien abduction and ouija boards. They CAN believe in color therapy and Fung Sheui and Christmas, then what I was saying is that a lot of people go around saying that "Atheists don't believe in any such thing" and they (those people) call themselves Skeptics when they are not skeptics, but deniers.
      My point is that I was agreeing with the OP and adding the conversation.

    When people ask," What is the meaning of life?" I know the answer. It is your choice to choose what the meaning of it is. To make your life wonderful, to make other people's lives wonderful, to care for people whose lives turned in a wrong direction and help them out. But one thing is for certain, every life moves humanity in a way, if it is to learn from a mistake so others don't make it, to make people think, or to make something that boosts humanity to a closer point of a certain goal, they all move humanity in some way.

      I think the phrase ''He's in a better place'' is not very misleading. While ''he'' may not exist per se, his suffering doesn't either, so in a way you could say that the person is relieved of their suffering, in a better place.

      Well ***** , I could think of a different array of situations in which one would wish to express empathy without the need of referencing the supernatural. That's the key to my query. Expressing empathy. Our English language is full of colloquialisms and idiomatic expressions that have been influenced by the dogmas.
      I'm an atheist and I still say things like OMG, and "god no!" or "god forbid me" without hesitation. It's just an integral part of our language now.
      I'm in a family surrounded by Catholics, and when someone dies, I still struggle to empathize and offer condolences while still avoiding references to religious/supernatural phrases.

After I cried. I went out and had the best day off my life because I knew if he were around that's what he would have wanted.
    We had a party after his ceremony to celebrate his life. And when I tell people that it was the most beautiful party I ever went to they look at me like I'm crazy. That celebrating after a funeral isn't something to do. I laugh and just tell them "that's what we do."

    I am absolutely terrified of the idea of life after death, in whatever form. Obviously hell is a horrible idea but to me also reincarnation is. The idea that after I’ll die I’ll start another life without the people I love and that I would have to start over (i.e. I would have to re-educate myself, I would have to find another partner, another job, going through suffering again) is absolutely terrifying and I honestly don’t get how so many people think that life having a definitive end is bad. What bothers me the most is that we actually have some kind of evidence for reincarnation (see Ian Stevenson’s work about children remembering their past lives and their stories actually corresponding to real events)

    I realize that nobody will ever take me seriously due to my name and avatar being Biggie Cheese, but I have to get this out. When I think about death I get scared, nervous, and I shake. I feel a chill down my spine that makes me cold even on a blazing hot day. I fear eternal nothingness, and I don't know why. My mom used to tell me, "Don't be afraid of death, when your dead you'll be too dead to care" I should have listened, but even now when I think back on her telling me this I still don't feel comfort. I don't know why, is it natural to be this afraid of literally nothing. It is so bad that I take medication, I have been taking it for years, it helps a lot, but when I am reminded of death it happens. I get chills, I feel scared, I shake, and sometimes I cry, but that last one is extraordinarily rare. I always envied religious people that don't have doubts, because they are certain that they will live forever with their loved ones. They have the luxury of not seeing our world in it's true form. They don't see all of reality, because they live in fantasy land. A comment on an atheist RUclips channel comes to mind, it said "Believing in god is like believing in unicorns, except unicorns are more realistic.". Nothing but avoiding the topic of death helps me. I have been to therapy, but they only suggested upping my medication, which I have tried. I realize that almost nobody will read this, but I just wanted to get this out. If you read the comment then either reply with your opinions or like it, just so I know that you read ALL of it, thanks! :) Have a great day.

    some people happy stealing,.. some people happy giving, then both share exactly same destiny in the end, death and nothingness. So, why bother giving instead of stealing? it's the easier way, the happiest way..

    These benefits are great even for believers like me because I don't know if I can do any of the things I want to do in Heaven that I can do on Earth. I'm a Christian but I try not to take things for granted, try but struggle with fighting over little things. These suggestions are great for everyone including believers.

    Why do people say, lord have mercy on him or her, and lord be good to him or her when their dead, why didn't he have mercy, when they were in drastic pain dying slowly from cancer, what kind of god, would be so heinous.

    1.) death motivate us ......
    2.) remind us to look at the big picture ......
    3.) help us appreciate what we have .......
    4.) let us prepare our exit ........

    I am an atheist but I do (sort of) believe in an afterlife and a soul. I acknowledge I have no grounding in this belief, and certainly won't argue for it, but I do feel like there is something more to us than just a body and a mind.
    I also suspect I believe it mostly because I don't like the alternative, but the point is atheists don't necessarily dismiss the existence of some afterlife or the soul, they just dismiss the idea of a god or gods.

    This reminds me of a quote to a CollegeHumor video (of all things). It goes something like this:
    "You can't avoid danger, just go on and try! No matter your actions,
    YOU'RE STILL GONNA DIE."

    Yes, celebrate life rather than being sad that it's over. We recently had a few church members pass away. One of our pastor's relatives and the mom of one of my friends. There is no sadness because we know we'll see them again soon. Even the funeral's will be celebration of life events. We're happy that they were with us for a time. Now, they've simply gone to be with the Lord. I wish I could join them now, but my time will come.

    I don't understand why people are afraid of death .. (HOW you die might be concerning) but it will happen eventually. It is all a matter of how and when. I would much rather enjoy my life NOW then keep worrying about death. I do not need some "eternal purpose" to my life ... I am just happy to be here.

    Gaining knowledge is one of my favorite things to do. If I died and no longer would even know I ever existed would be a waste of time. Thank God I will live forever, and continue to learn new things for eternity. Carl Sagan would have loved that.

    Death ensures that eternity is nicely divided into 3 parts. There's the part where you don't yet exist, the part you do exist, and a part where you no longer exist. Seems pretty well-balanced, actually.

    It's really horrifying to think about the concept of eternity, and how there will never be an end to time, it is always ticking and nothing can stop it, or ever will. I think that is why many people choose to make themselves think there is an afterlife in which everything is great. Being an atheist, I find eternity very terrifying, yet I'd rather stick to common sense than grasp on a religion I know is false
