I like that you know your style and you’re not swayed to dress in a manner that’s not comfortable for you. Also, you are right it’s just as good to know what you don’t like than what you do like.
I liked how you flipped the script and shared what didn’t work well for your wardrobe during summer and what your wish list is based on that. I’m finding that I’ve learned a lot about my wardrobe based on what I didn’t wear and thinking about why so I don’t repeat purchasing that item. It’s about staying in tune to what works for you and your lifestyle. Also, I liked the shout out to Lydia Tomlinson! She has impeccable style.
I definitely enjoy dressing in the cooler weather more because i love wearing sweaters and hoodies and scarves. I feel more cozy and comfort. Your message is always inspiring
After a lifetime on the east coast, I moved to the California desert four years ago. Summer/hot has always been my favorite time of year, but I have always felt most me in fall sweaters and boots. Well, those days are gone, and learning my new style for this climate continues to be a journey. Thanks for these helpful thoughts!
It’s funny to hear you struggle with summer. It’s when I feel the most me. Good thing since it lasts from May to the end of October where I am. I can see the draw toward jeans and sweaters though. I love those too. Thank you for addressing shoes. They are so expensive and I really will not be uncomfortable. Choosing well can seem daunting.
I found I didn’t wear my sleeveless blouses because I don’t really like my upper arms, I will be donating them. Will look for tops that cover my arms.👍🏼
My upper arms are awful. I’m not overweight, they’re just wrinkled an flabby-looking from collagen loss, age 63. I have to keep some sleeveless tops for the hottest weather, but I only wear them in public if it’s the only way I can keep cool enough, or under linen blazers in spring or autumn, when long sleeves underneath are too hot. I really love a matching silk skirt and top set, but wear a third piece when in public if the top is sleeveless. Ideally, I can get a matching long-sleeve shirt, too, from the brand to wear over the tank, or instead🙂
Ohh Im not the only one who can’t wait for summer to be over. Summer is not my favorite season because I almost never feel like myself. I’m so confused with my summer style… it is very hot during summer where I live
I keep a list of “Don’t Buys” on my phone, with all the design elements that didn’t work for me in the past. This is a highly personal list for each individual. Top of my list: 3/4-sleeves and tunic-length tops or sweaters. I know some people love these, but I hate them, they just don’t work on me. These are also two common features of mature brands, which is why I don’t shop those brands. I also hate the colorful novelty sweaters and tops they’re always pushing, and the matched bright-color sets, you know, like a bright printed dress with a matching cardigan in one of the colors in the dress pattern.
I realized, when you mentioned it, Signe that most of my Dont’s are based on comfort. The biggie for me is no synthetic fibers or plastic shoes/accessories, my hypersensitive, allergic skin just can’t tolerate them, nor can my tendency to overheat, they don’t breathe at all. Also, 3/4-sleeves, there’s no temperature condition when I can wear them. They’re far too hot for summer, but my arms get too cold in winter, even spring and autumn. With long fitted sleeves, I can always push them up as needed, but I avoid flared or belled-sleeves because I can’t. In terms of style, I hate anything tunic-length or oversized, they just drown me. Those long sweaters and tops are not only outdated, they were for wearing over skinnies or leggings, but I don’t want to “cover bottom, tummy, hips and thighs”! I just don’t understand why US, especially mature-brand, designers think we all want to! I like showing my slim lower body, but not with skinnies and leggings are for at home. I’m petite, so I only buy “cropped” sweaters, which are hip-bone length on me, or tops that I can tuck in. Without showing my waist, I look like a brick, but actually my legs are proportionally long compared to my short torso. So, why obscure my best features?
Greetings from California, I appreciate your approach here, I realized too that floral print and flowy just doesn’t work for me however I love it on others. It’s totally a comfort thing, I prefer structure and feeling tucked in, so I have a couple of flowy blouses to pair with denim and shoulder bag to adapt to my comfort level- I love it. This summer I wore wide legged linen pants with tank style or capped sleeves tops and jean jacket- I’m thinking much more about silhouette when choosing an outfit. Thank you
Same. I stopped buying skirts years ago and don't miss them at all, since I never reached for them. All skirts ended up hanging in my closet with tags on for years. And I was never much of a dress girl either, but this summer I did buy my first maxi dress and wore it so much and got so man compliments. Our style and personality al preferences always keep evolving and I'm happy to start enjoying summer dresses at 34 😊
Hello! As you mentioned Birkenstock, I would like to recommend a birken with metallic color. I have one pair of silver Arizona birken and they were my summer favorite for 2 years, with combination of casual and edgy vibe. The metallic material make them not too relax yet still have some urban atmosphere. Love your contents as always! 😊😊
I've come to accept that I am most comfortable (myself) in a relaxed, classic, casual look with a little bit of edge. As much as I appreciate a layered colorful look, when I try to dress that way I just don't feel like myself. It's almost like I'm in a costume. Like you, I struggle in the summer months. Fall & winter, boots, jeans (the perfect pair) a hoop a scarf, and cardigan or jacket. The things I spend the most money on are shoes (sneakers), boots, and jeans. Of course the perfect gray sweater and quality tees.
Oh my word, what you're saying about summer style got me thinking of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy... I would love if you did a steal her style for Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy!! Maybe specifically for summer style? To be honest I feel like I love all her outfits. She had such an iconic style and consistently didn't show leg.
Signe, you just hit the nail on the head here. I have also created a list while I was packing away all my summer clothes to help me understand what I did and didn't wear. The idea was to help myself the next time summer comes along and take just the clothes I am going to need. Love your content as always ✌️❤️
Thank you for your content and Inspiration. I have been following you for years now. Dresses made my Summer, combined with denim jacket, espadrillos, bare feet sandals or white sneakers. Loved the dresses from armed angels, eco alf and cos. I am so in love with my uniform that it is hard to pack them away for winter.
My white summer tops and t-shirts are my favourites but I often don't wear them as I haven't yet found a sun cream that doesn't ruin them with yellow stains 😕
This! I recently heard of a hack, using hairspray around the neckline, to avoid getting makeup on it. I'm wondering if this would also work for sunscreen. 🤔
oh i really feel that too! i can describe me style very similar to yours and i also have that struggle in summer. i do love floral prints (at others) but most of the time - when i'm wearing it - i kinda feel dressed up and just not my self. and i also know that problem with white tshirts. i love them but they are really not that practical 🙂 thanks for summing up what i think in really clear words hihi
I liked the video and your insights, after a summer of weight fluctuations, an active toddler, not wearing my shorts and skirts and weird belgian summers, ive decided to add in my wishlist a couple of long cotton dresses 😊
I´ve been fine tuning my summer wardrobe but I definetly do not feel as comfortable and at ease with it compared to my F/W wardrobe. A work in progess, but I have learned that my eye in my S/S wardrobe draws heavily to my fantasy self and she has no place in my wardrobe anymore
I think such a don‘t list is really useful! I started making one on my phone two or three years ago and it really helps me not to repeat the same shopping mistakes over and over again
Really great video! Well thought out and I love how you gave alternatives and examples. I related to the short denim skirt; I donated mine in September! I was considering a midi one, and like you, decided if I go for it, I want a more relaxed style. I thought “You should check out Massimo Dutti…” and then you popped one up as an example! Very helpful and enjoyable! 👏
I think you'd look great in a medium wash midi denim skirt. I love short skirts but I leave them now to wear in winter with thick tights. I think they still look great that way.
I think you're right (re. this year's long denim skirts that are fitted with high split) - having bought one, I only wore it once for an evening out - its just not practical for day to day with kids! Love the analysis before purchasing! 😊👍
I would say these simple denim skirts are timeless, I bought one 20 years ago at GAP and it looks 100% like the ones that were on trend this summer, mine as a high slit up the middle, but it still provides enough coverage and I can also wear it while biking.
I've always been into just wearing printed t-shirt+jeans since my teenage years (I played for a rock band in high school and _no it's not a phase_ 😂). In my mid-20s while working in corporate, I totally stayed away from that uniform even during casual days -- but not wearing them at all just didn't feel like me. Your style kinda gave me the urge to just express my true self and rock my edgy tshirts once again 😂 this time with proper styling, too!
I don’t usually leave a lot of comments here, but just wanted to say I love your channel, and love your style, Signe. Of all the fashion and style social media influencers around here and others, I relate to your style the most. Btw, this time last year I visited Denmark for the first time land fell in love with it! Anyway, just wanted to say that. 😊
I don’t thrive, or dress nearly as well, in summer either. I hate hot weather and just wear one of my (woven) linen dresses to leave the house. I have a half-dozen or so good ones that I can wear now, that was my summer wardrobe priority this year. As they get soiled, I wash them and batch the ironing for the winter. I can’t iron in a 90F house! At home alone I wear H&M linen jersey dresses. They’re shapeless and too sheer to wear in public, but they’re the coolest garments I’ve ever found in my 50 years of searching and they don’t need ironing. I’m hoping to get more soon, their recent styles, high-neck and cap sleeves, haven’t worked out well for me and mostly they’re black, not a color I like to wear.
I am not one to feel comfortable showing my legs either. I'm short and my legs have always been called "chicken legs" because they were so scrawny, and even though that's not the case anymore being in my 60's doesn't make me like my legs either. I never used to wear shorts or dresses/skirts even during summer and I lived in a climate that made that possible and comfortable. Now I live in a much warmer and tropical climate. I did try shorter dresses and skirts along with shorts and I didn't like it. Now wear longer flowing pieces(mid calf) so I can remain cooler and I don't wear shorts but more of a culotte( or calf length) pant and wide leg linen pants. So much better.
Hi Signe, I watched/read somewhere the way to amp up summer styling would be through accessories 😊 I’m like you, struggles with summer outfits and hates showing legs (and my arms for that matter) so my Wishlist has been minimal compared to Autumn/Winter haha I know you can relate to this! Have a great week ahead! Thanks for the video
I live in Australia where we have 4-5 months of hot +32 degree C temperatures. Summer is linen shift dresses and cotton shorts and T-shirts for me, but I have some great sandals and silk scarves to style things up a bit.
Interesting that you edited out your denim mini skirt; so did I! I'm 66, though, and work at a community college -- just never really wore the denim skirt for the past two years, so it was taking up valuable real estate in my closet with no return on investment; out it went. One thing I do which I haven't heard ANYONE else doing: when I'm going through a purge (end of the season, usually) I use my pendulum. I'm quite adept at pendulum use. I go through my closet item by item and ask, "should I keep this?" I get the most interesting answers. I wasn't really "planning on" ditching the denim skirt, but when I got a "no" on that with the pendulum, I had to think back: have I worn it? No. Why am I keeping it? I had no idea. Of course at the end of the pendulum session if I'm "told" to let go of something that I disagree with, I keep it...and keep an eye on it to see if it should stay or should go. Usually eventually those things that the pendulum identifies, I agree with. Using the pendulum in this way has helped me SO much...to not buy things that catch my eye BEFORE I buy them...and to "give me permission" to pass on an item that really doesn't suit me. "It wasn't ME, it was my PENDULUM that told me to let it go." My pendulum is hardly ever wrong. However!! I found a really cool miniskirt (kind of a dark turquoise blue) from Smartwool, and bought that recently. I'm planning to wear mostly all black with it (tights, wool sweater, wool jacket, boots). Our college's colors are blue and white and we regularly are supposed to wear our "colors" to work. The denim blue skirt would have been fine to keep for "color day," but I never wore tights with it, only bare legs. I'm going to be interested to see how much I wear the Smartwool miniskirt for cold weather. Is it just the mini that I needed to let go of, or the color, or the summer-denim-weight of it?
I agree that summer is my least favourite season to dress for. Where I live the summer is very hot so its mainly dresses or very light weight wide pants but sometimes even a waistband can feel too hot. I much prefer jeans and pants in general in the cooler months.
Thanks for this kind of reflection, very helpful! The problem with classic bermuda shorts is that they cut your body in half. I tried them but it didn't work at all. I was actually thinking of pleated shorts like the ones you wear here! Shall we swap? :)
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it 😍 yes, they’d definitely need to be high waist for me and also not too long as otherwise I think you’re right, the proportion of them could be a little tricky especially for someone like myself who’s got a slightly longer torso than legs 🙏🏻😄
I’m always curating my closet, so this was very insightful. I really liked the first skirt (navy blue midi) you showed. Do you know the brand? I’m petite, but I don’t wear short skirts as much anymore and have been searching for good quality, reasonably priced longer skirts in softer fabrics. Softer bias cut skirts work better on my body than long stiff skirts.
The Birkenstocks, in my opinion, don't work with your formula of combining casual with formal pieces. This formula was a game changer for me too. Now I make sure that every piece could be styled with this combination, but Birkenstocks could not.
I also feel very uncomfortable wearing skirts and shorter shorts as a mom. It's impractical because you're bending down to your kid's level to talk or play constantly. I don't want to have to worry about showing off my undies accidentally in that moment 😂
Hi Signe, the simple t-shirt dresses you showed in the video have way too much fabric imo, they will look very shapeless and frumpy, maybe a shirt dress (with buttons) would be better, I have several denim ones in various lengths/washes and they're very versatile, also they last forever. I also wear them with graphic tees and jumpers underneath leaving some of the top buttons undone. You can also get them in corduroy. I think you look great in the shorts, you have great legs so show them off while you're young before you get saggy knees or varicose veins! I'm not keen on the longer shorts/bermudas. I invested in a long denim skirt last year and I wore it a lot, surprisingly flattering and comfortable with a slit at the back and a "column" silhouette which is very elongating (I'm petite). But I've gone off it a bit, it was a bit of a trend piece, I may shorten it so still a good purchase.
😂 Yep! I wasn't Mennonite (grew up surrounded by them) but definitely was one of those "conservative Christians". Wore long skirts all the time...pants were not allowed. Now I wear pants all the time and actually miss wearing skirts once in awhile.
Making a shopping list is key to developing a great wardrobe. I feel the same about denim skirts. The a-line denim midi skirt has worked well for me. BTW, your white tank top looks great. Who is the maker/seller? Thank you!
Thank you so much! Happy to hear you enjoyed the video 😍 According to the tonal system I’m a soft/cool/light which gets closest to the traditional soft summer 😊
In my opiniom it’s not the legs, it’s the sandals. I think they do not suit your legs, not just in shorts but in jeans either. I think you would feel better showing your legs if you changed the shoes 😊
That green coat is fabulous. It suits you very well.
speaking of colour, this ice blue knit looks lovely on you
Yes, on so many levels, Signe, thank you. It's all an inner comfort feeling game for me, too. Looks are second, always.
Love Fall! I love sweaters, cardigans, blazers, jackets, vests...layers.
Ohh Im not the only one who can’t wait for summer to be over. Summer is not my favorite season because I almost never feel like myself. I’m so confused with my summer style… it is very hot during summer where I live
👍yes for feeling yourself in what you wear + practical🖐️
I keep a list of “Don’t Buys” on my phone, with all the design elements that didn’t work for me in the past. This is a highly personal list for each individual. Love that idea! Also thanks for watching 😍
I think you would look amazing in plum. It looked great when you had it next to you in this posting.

Great video and I always buy second hand first it’s saved me a fortune and I like them more than new🤔😁😀💗
I wear Birkies as much as possible, but I like some of the styles with thinner straps than the classic Arizona ones. You might like those better.
I live in Australia where we have 4-5 months of hot +32 degree C temperatures. Summer is linen shift dresses and cotton shorts and T-shirts for me, but I have some great sandals and silk scarves to style things up a bit.

Another great video, Signe!
Love all of your videos
I’m finding that I no longer enjoy wearing white tops … not practical for me anymore
♡ Well said!
Long denim skirts are a hard no for this mom
I think the long denim skirt is a trend and also kind of stiff. Reminds me of conservative Christians (like Mennonite) when I was a kid
😂 Yep! I wasn't Mennonite (grew up surrounded by them) but definitely was one of those "conservative Christians". Wore long skirts all the time...pants were not allowed. Now I wear pants all the time and actually miss wearing skirts once in awhile.
That’s all I can think of when I see Jean skirts of any kind 😂😂
Making a shopping list is key to developing a great wardrobe. I feel the same about denim skirts. The a-line denim midi skirt has worked well for me. BTW, your white tank top looks great. Who is the maker/seller? Thank you!
The tank top is from a brand called The Slow Label 😍🙏🏻
@UseLess_dk. Thanks!
Really enjoyed your insights, tips and ideas for next year. Thanks for sharing! PS: I think we share the same colouring, are you a Spring?
She is a soft summer, I believe.
I think she is a Soft, Light, Summer, I’m no expert but can often recognize my own coloring type.
Thank you so much! Happy to hear you enjoyed the video 😍 According to the tonal system I’m a soft/cool/light which gets closest to the traditional soft summer 😊
You look gorgous in this video
How about a denim shirt dress?
Oh I kinda love this idea too!
In my opiniom it’s not the legs, it’s the sandals. I think they do not suit your legs, not just in shorts but in jeans either. I think you would feel better showing your legs if you changed the shoes 😊
I , like you ,do not enjoy summer dressing. Shorts are a hard NO for me. I love sweaters, jeans, trousers, boots and jackets.
Those "short" shorts look so nice on you! Please no bermudas....the quiet luxury trend means 30 year olds now look 50!
