The movie glossed over the coolest part...the recovery from the first attack and the integration of alien technology to our military. They needed to explore that much more.

The sequel should've been a series, that helped us understand the transition, that lead up to the Resurgence movie. It would've been amazing. Plus Will Smith should've returned. Producers could've easily waited until Smith's schedule opened up, cuz it was a simple scheduling issue. Smith wanted to come back.

I was heart broken by this movie, I loved the first Independence Day, I saw it 20 years ago on my birthday (July 4th), so my family decided to take me out to see the new one on my birthday again. All around great birthday but this movie was horrible minus the familiar faces.
So many things are wrong about this movie, it's too radically different IMO. I don't see our society progressing that far with alien technology so fast, and the soundtrack doesn't spice things up like the first one which accounts for some of that missing charisma Chris mentioned. Other little things, I think the new mothership got too large, a ship that large would destroy life on Earth without even trying, all the aliens had to do was orbit the Earth with that a few times and that'd do it with the gravity that thing would have. Pretty stupid aliens, they didn't even have to land to do the trick.

Wow, that is all sorts of fucked up. Mae Whitman deserves better and so does Maika Monroe for that matter. She's a great actor and seeing her in such a thankless role as in this film is just... sad.
She prettier than the chicken they hired, the only thing thie new chicken had different to her was she was taller and skinnier.
The original Independence Day was a huge hit, and Starship Troopers wasn't. That in a nutshell is what was wrong with the 1990s.

+Pocky Bear Yea krampus was really bad and so was the Conjuring 2 and Hush... Paranormal activity the Ghost Dimensions was soooo good tho, it probably won Oscars... krampus had unfunny humor, unscary and not so disturbing special effects and it was SOO UNORIGNAL AND BORING... Ghost Dimensions had great memorable characters and had good plot that answers all of the questions

Justin Coleman It was widely reported and confirmed by cast and Mae Whitman and Ross Bagley that they were not asked to reprise their roles and sources in the studio have said she wasn’t even on the shortlist for the character. It was all traditionally “hot” blondes. I mean this movie is a few years old now you could at least make a cursory effort to google for info before posting asinine comments.

oh and i think you are right chris, Mae Whitman was not even considered and she is a great actress. The speculation is they wanted the presidents daughter to be a love interest for Liam Hemsworth and they thought Mae and him wouldn't look good together. Yeah so they go for the transformer supermodel type instead. I mean i know Liam is a big name but honestly we had some big names already, so I say they should have cast Mae and then cast someone that had chemistry with her on screen. It just feels like a cash grab to put Liam in. I think he is very "meh" and "ok i guess" as an actor. Frankly the only reason he is big is because he is hot and was in hunger games, that's pretty much it. If find him bland and boring personally. Frankly, its actors like will smith in the first movie that have charisma and personality that draw you in. I really wish will smith would have returned, even if it was for a portion of the movie and he died a hero on the screen. It's what harrison ford did for star wars, he wanted them to kill han solo years ago and he got his wish. That don't need the stupid studio michael bay transformers formula to make this movie a hit. They needed to use what made the first movie great : Great fun characters with personalities, practical effects-the models they used still look good today and you don't need to overload every scene with crazy amounts of cgi, and great actors, i cared about the main characters because of the actors portraying them. Yes it is corny at times now but its charming still and fun but you still had heartfelt moments: I teared up when the lady died, I yelled "no" along with will smith when harry conick junior died, and i even felt bad for randy quaid's kids when he was saying his goodbye's. The music really helped those scenes too.
So basically, it was missing Will Smith?

I found that so fucking annoying
It's SO goddamn annoying how this guy insists on saying the name wrong every time. Like he's not gotten comments correcting him before. I'm SURE that's the case and he just doesn't know. I remember when the BvS reviews came out and not only was the actual movie incredibly frustrating but no one seemed to be able to pronounce "Cavill." Rhymes with "gravel, travel, and gravel." That is not a difficult name to read or pronounce. And then half of the people on the internet apparently think Batman was played by "Benna Fleck." Jesus, people. Why is this so incredibly difficult? Am I just a brilliant supergenius who expects far, far too much from people? Because to me it seems like pronouncing "Ben Affleck" should not be hard or confusing. I don't know, maybe I'm Einstein-level smart and everyone else seems mentally challenged as a result. Yeah, that must be it.

Chris definitely has a talent for butchering names, and yeah... it kinda drives me up the wall too. Just a few examples of his mispronunciations: Terry Jilliam, Chu-waddle Edgy-Oh-Fur, Gal Guh-dot, Michael Fossbender.
"It just kind of is!" That's kind of what my first words were when I was asked what I thought "Well, it just kind of, exists..." The movie wasn't terrible but didn't blow me away. It didn't make my life any worse or better watching it. It's an ideal movie that would come on a random television station at noon on a Sunday that you'd just leave on because there's nothing better on.
Your concerns for Mae on this one Chris are correct,and I share your annoyance for this.
This movie is part of what I call: The emmerich effect.
The visuals, cgi, and setpieces look amazing, but the characters are poorly written (and sometimes poorly casted) with clichéd and recycled villians. He focuses more on how good the film looks rather than how rounded the characters and villians are.

Maika Monroe was single-handedly my favourite part of the film. She is an amazing actress who has lots of talent and it shines in this film.

The crazy scientist was my absolute favorite part of the movie, especially he just waking up from a 20 yaer old coma out of nowhere.
The third act just felt like one of those video game boss battles where you have to destroy the boss's shield before you can start dealing damage. Honestly it reminded me a lot of Destiny.

The Story: C- The Action: A+ , At least in my opinion. I'd say that the most unrealistic part of this movie was the fact that The Eiffel Tower was the only landmark that didn't get destroyed
I am not a fan of the first one but I know how much that movie means for a lot a people, but this movie sucks! The visuals are good but that's it, the action is boring as shit, the script and the dialogue is atrocious, the acting is really bad and it's painfully too long. I am gonna give it a D-, just because of the visuals, but I still hated it, one of the worst movies of the year so far.
