An Epic Story of Lee 'Scratch' Perry

- Lee "Scratch" Perry was a Jamaican record producer, composer and singer noted for his innovative studio techniques and production style. Perry was a pioneer in the 1970s development of dub music with his early adoption of remixing and studio effects to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks. He worked with and produced for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, The Congos, Max Romeo, Adrian Sherwood, Beastie Boys, Ari Up, The Clash, The Orb, and others. He, however, had issues with many of the artists leading him to burn down his Black Ark Studio and his wife to abandon him. Lee was a god. A lifelong beacon of creativity and amazement.
Of all of the dub, reggae and ska artists I've listened to and loved, his creativity and harnessed madness have always stood out.
RIP Lee.
This man is a true genius of Jamaican music, along with Jackie mittoo
He seems to have gone through a lot and survived it all and lived for 85 years.
When you're gifted you're gifted and no one can the that away. R.I..P. ✌ ☮ always.
Really, a man with no education having gone this far was no joke. He was determined, focused until he made his goal. Rest in eternal peace perry.
Foolishness. Trench Town Rock was recorded at Federal studio in 1971 with the then Upsetters (Family Man, Carlie, Reggie Lewis), Wailers and Wailing Souls. That session also laid down Wailing Souls' Harbour Shark and a third track I can't remember now. So even if Trench Town Rock mocked him, it was while the Wailers were working with him. I was a schoolboy and was taken to the session by the excited group from the record shop where we hung out. After the session, with Bunny Wailer as the driver of the brown Escort, I was dropped at Victoria Park (now St William Grant Park) to catch a late bus home.
Great information thank you. More!
Respect
Knowledge
Great to get first hand accounts of people who were there. Thanks
Scratch was a genius, but he very bitter towards Bunny and Bob till his dying day
Lee Perry is the brother of George Clinton by anoher mother, talented and eccentric to the max....both of them 😆😆
nice timeline of events (but I see there are errors noted in the comments) also: I think it would have been helpful if you mentioned the “I Know A Place” sessions Perry did with Bob Marley, which (I may be wrong?) seemed to bury the hatchet between the two greats if any animosity had still existed. Also, it is a fabulous bunch of tunes - I Know A Place and Who Colt The Game plus their dubs are top quality. I personally rank Lee Perry as the #1 Jamaican producer (original tune only) then: #2 Coxsone Dodd #3 Joe Gibbs #4 Duke Reid #5 Sonia Pottinger #6 Justin Yap. King Tubby is not on my list there becuase he only did dubs, but obviously Tubby is a category of one, himself (and engineered a bunch of Perry classics, including some on Blackboard Jungle Dub, the best, in my opinion, Dub LP) thanks for the video. I love reggae music. Aka music, rock steady music and dub music. Peace and music ✌️
Wowwwwwwwww probably the only Reggae artist to date to have died at an advanced age and of natural cause. Thanks Ras Dennis
Seen him some years ago, smoking drinking on stage. Still legendary. 2017- 2019
Love the man! He was eccentric and radical for his time. A true legend of Reggae Music. One 💕 love Ideen. Forward to Zion! ✌️ Peace!
Just found a Documentary of Lee's later years, which he spent in my homeland switherland. In the most conservative part of it, having a great time in the nature between mountains and cows. Now, if he was eccentric by jamaican standards, let me tell you, he looked like an extraterrestrian in that scenery.
A shame I only got to know about that so late... would have loved to visit him... Maybe bringing a new mirror for his hat... ;)
Such an Epic story of the time ❤❤❤!!!
He was a special man
Lee Perry is immortal
RIP THE GOAT
He s not and that is my opinion.....: Chris Blackwell and Crew
Reggae Started Before Lee Perry Exited Studio One, Reggae Was Created And Invented By Our Dynamic Musicians,,,🏆🇯🇲 Mr. KeenObserVatioN 🇯🇲🏆
Unforgettable Lee 'Scratch' Perry- big thanks for making some amazing musi and just being you!

Perry was a pirate
Wow what an awesome and well spoken documentary!!
The most fun I ever had performing and playing 6 or 7 instruments over the years has been the 12 years I played reggae on the east coast w Babatunde and the Roots International Crew, and especially the late great Wilson Blue and Blue Roots Reggae Band.. among others. I'm Blue Roots we once even opened for Dub Syndicate at the reggae festival at Stepping Stone Ranch in Escoheag, R.I. 1996.. it was over 110 degrees up on that stage, I played barefoot and the bottoms of my feet burned, I looked like a long haired lobster afterwards, and the LED readout on my stage keyboard melted so I couldn't even see my programs.. ALWAYS a huge fan of Dub Syndicate, Peter Tosh, Marley, Pan Hall, and countless others, this was the single best mini bio of one of the most memorable and talented engineers of reggae and it's production, of all time! Thank you for this incredibly informative bio on the great Lee Scratch Perry!
Awsome mini docs, greetings ras dennis, one love blessing to lee perry dubing in the sky
I always thought him and Bob had similar voices. Even speaking
.
Yes, you're very correct on this.
Put down that pipe, Lee. Too much herb!
Lol ...😆
Fi truuu!! ...Give thanks Bro.Ras Dennis! ...I love Bro. Scratch's music and of-course have massive respect and Raspect for him and this video/documentary is very informative. I learned alot more about our Brother!! Again, I give THANKS for all the work and time and care it took to come to forewishen!! Blessed love!! ..RasTafari!!!😇🙏👍💚💛❤️
I'm ALSO Ras Dennis. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼 🇬🇳
You can walk into any record shop in the UK and so many parts of the world and see so many different variations of wailers compilation albums full of music from their scratch perry era, with only Bob's picture on the front. This is because scratch sold the rights to this music to merchants in the UK without consulting any of the wailers. Scratch went back to JA and paid Bob, bunny and peter peanuts. They nearly beat him to death when this happened.
L,Z SO, YOU SEE WHY ONLY BOB'S PICTURE WAS ON THE FRONT? WELL NOW YOU KNOW WHY. DID YOU KNOW WHAT WE FROM TRENCH TOWN WHO LIVED THE HISTORY KNOW? THIS WAS BECAUSE ISLAND RECORDS , COXSONE, PERRY, AND OTHERS WERE RECORDING OUR MUSIC AND SELLING THEM ON VINYL TO SHOPS IN THE UK WITHOUT OUR KNOWLEDGE, AND STEALING OUR ROYALTIES NOT PAYING US ANYTHING. THEY STOLE OUR TRENCH TOWN PEOPLE MUSIC. THIS TRUTH IS WIDE AND DEEP. RAS CARDO WHO CREATED REGGAE AND OWNS THE EXCLUSIVE COPYRIGHTS(SEE IT ONLINE) IS FROM TRENCH TOWN. HE/WE HAVE THE TRUE HISTORY.**DO YOU REALLY WANT THE FULL TRUE DETAILED STORY?** DO YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHO GAVE ORDERS TO KILL WHO AND WHY? WE KNOW!!!
True. 🤦🏾♂️ 😂. Him shouldn’t have done that 🌟 😂
For real, they recorded the beating and sent it to his wife. If I'd grown up in the ghetto of Trench Town having had to learn to fight, and saw making it big in music as my ticket out of poverty, my way of telling the world about what was happening to my people, and my spiritual calling as well, I'd have got angry and potentially beat him up as well, they had a lot of reasons to.

@@LZ-dm8co I'm a pacifist more or less, but I reckon that's because I've had the luxury to be, had I had their lives I may have done the same in their place. I can't help thinking 'Fair enough'.
Bless Lee Scratch and 🔥
I heard after he burned the Black Arc down he was seen walking backwards striking the ground with a hammer. Glad he got some off his marbles back. His albums with Mad Professor and the Orb were brilliant ✌️
He burned the studio down to remove himself from a protection racket, and when people asked him why he said 'Somebody stole my favourite rubber ball', which I think is pretty cool.
The song concerned was : Small axe
Great musician

Happy to see him live. Toots another great able to see. Wish I could have seen Desmond, Morgan, and Aitken (too many more to list. Alton.......)
Hopefully going to see Mr. Symarip himself Roy!
Can you make a bio Jamaican chinese history. Tnx
Guys ever seen his full documentary The Upsetter narrated by Benicio Del Toro, ✌️
top claSS
When are you going to do Burning Spear?
Unfortunately, a another self destructive story in the world of reggae, with such talent. So sad.
Nothing sad, kept performing, reached respectfully age, genius albums. Nothing self-destructive, self providing.
I know of this music being born in Jamaica during that era. This guy was a known nutcase. Brilliant musically nonetheless.
The Lee Scratch Perry That Was At Studio One To Joe Gibbs, Is A Totally Different Lee Perry After Leaving Joe Gibbs,,,,🏆🇯🇲 Mr. KeenObserVatioN 🇯🇲🏆
Yes imo his Black Ark work was some of his best.
He actually did a good thing by bootlegging the Wailers. It’s was free exposure across seas.
This was fantastic, so good to learn more the reggae genius. What was the song playing through out the documentary? I really like this too.
I'm hoping Ras does a video about Augustus Pablo...
Will do. Many thanks for watching
Oh dear GOD. THE KING OF THE MELODICA ....: MANLEY AUGUSTUS BUCHANON aka AUGUSTUS PABLO. He was in a league of his own. LEGENDARY
No the legal name of Augustus Pablo was Horace Swaby. And Manley Augustus Buchanan is the legal name of Big Youth.

I liked Perry but not all his dogs were barking. Seriously. RIP Rainford Hugh Perry aka Lee Perry
There's a thin line between lunacy and genius
@@ianthompson9942 indeed. In the recording studio he was GOD HIMSELF. BUT.... and that's the part that everybody was afraid of
The dogs didn't bark but the lions roared... A producer and a vet.... U don't believe go watch "Marley and me"... Tell the vet u have a psychological problem which causes you to see the bad side of great people...
@@leeperry8819 Perry was great, Marley was greater. I didn't assume or say he was bad. Upstairs he had some, if not, a lot of issues.

Dam he got beat up ? We need a movie
May Allah bless his soul
Performed by the Wailers but actually Bob's composition... Allegations rather unlikely 'cos Perry was such an eccentric oddball you couldn't tell whether he was telling the truth or not..🤣🤣🤣 And What?? From the Secret Laboratory.. Perry's Best ever album?😳😳 Oh.... Come on..!!!!
You said it, Secret Laboratory not even in the top ten!!!! Police and Thieves, Soul Revolution, Super Ape, Panic in Babylon..........................................................
anyone know that first killer dub
Could've mentioned 1987 album Time Boom X De Devil Dead with Ade Sherwood & Dub Syndicate. But that (arugably) his best of the latest albums Rainford (2019) and the dub companion Heavy Rain is not mentioned I truly consider a lack of knowledge/investigation. Makes me wonder how 'well' the rest of his career has been investigated...
Yes, I've noticed that this short documentary fails to mention some crucial albums and stuff, and overlooks Lee's genius.
Salute what’s the name of intro & outro song
Drinking petrol ? He wouldn't have reached this age. Bollocks.
What song is playing throughout the video?
Y on Jah's Earth wld he torch🔥the Blak Ark Studio & ALL its master tapes????👀
