I read ten times more complaints about the 718 engine sound than any complaints about electric cars! I think the 718 sounds great. I have a 2009 Cayman and I wish I could get a 718. More power at lower revs...that's what I am excited about.
First of all, if you haven't driven it, please restrain from making the ridiculous remarks. This car is the quintessential ride for the Porsche enthusiast and the future in engine technology today. This is one of the best Porsche's money can buy today and most likely the best mid-engine in the world at any price. The car is outrageous. Sports cars are about extreme performance and the 982 is an enormous leap ahead in performance from the 981, as great a car as it is. This engine, based on Porsche's experience with the 4 cylinder in the 919, is a masterpiece of engineering. The new variable vane geometry in the 911 turbo within the car has eliminated lag. Car & Driver C/D TEST RESULTS for 718 Cayman S PDK: Zero to 60 mph: 3.6 sec Zero to 100 mph: 8.7 sec Zero to 130 mph: 15.2 sec Zero to 150 mph: 22.8 sec Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 4.4 sec Top gear, 30-50 mph: 2.5 sec Top gear, 50-70 mph: 2.9 sec Standing ¼-mile: 12.0 sec @ 117 mph Sound is a pointless argument--as if the sound of a car magically dictates performance. You had to wring the neck of the 981 to extract its power--that's what you heard. And, the new 718 Cayman S--the 2017 World Performance Car of the Year as judged by 75 top auto critics from 23 countries--sounds great. It's throaty, raw, aggressive and unapologetic. Car and Driver had this to say: "Reducing cylinder count and turbocharging will always change the engine sound in ways enthusiasts don’t love (ask any Formula 1 fan about the latest-generation cars), so we must be forgiven for this fine whine. But it’s an essentially pointless argument. Ignore those itching to pick a fight with, “It just doesn’t sound like a Porsche.” Drive a 718 Cayman S for three minutes and there’s no question it’s a Porsche. So that noise you hear? That’s what this Porsche sounds like. It’s not as if some treasured heritage rests solely in the sound of six cylinders deployed pancake-fashion. The 944 and 968 Turbos were four-cylinder forced-induction Porsches; the 356, 914, and 912 were flat-fours. If a 911 doesn’t sound like a 928 that doesn’t sound like a Cayenne, so what? Did Derek Bell climb out of his 962C after winning the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans and complain that it just didn’t sound as sweet as the 917 he’d driven in 1971? No, he did not. Because he was about getting on down the road. And, uh, he had earplugs. Just get in the car and drive the wheels off the thing, already."
Thanks for this detailed statement:) Wish more people would take the time write such nice texts and comments about what they truly think. It's not about the content being right or wrong...it's about your clean argumentation:)
The sound is OKish for me. But i think that a 5cylinder would be the best bargain. Next gen 718 should have 5cyl engine for me. Well, its mostly a mind game. 4 is not a big number :)
@Michael Persiano I strongly disagree! Supercars are for extreme performance. Sportscars are for the experience of driving. In other words, sportscars don't care about the numbers. The 718 is a sportscar, not a supercar. A sportscar must be engaging and involving to drive and the way it sounds totally matters. Supercars are stupidly fast these days but some of them sound less than colourless and are a bit sterile in terms of driving involvement! But we forgive these things in supercars, because they're made to be driven in anti-social rythms and - usually - nothing else! So I won't care about what you said and I will simply search for a low-mileage 981 Boxster S! Then we talk! ;-D And let's not forget: If I wanted a Subaru, I would buy a Subaru! I wouldn't look for a car twice the price which sounds like a Subaru! edit: You also referred to the 356, the 912 and the 914. They all have 4-cylinders, that's true! But we live in 2017! There's no way for a modern 4-cylinder to sound as good as an old air-cooled 4-pot, with all the turbo tech and anti-pollution tech going on! Even when fitted with a tuned exhaust! Absolutely no way! Deal with it!
I had one of these as a courtesy cay for a week! I was so lucky. It is hands down one of the best sports car I've driven for the experience. It's also a great daily car because it's so practical. I can't wait to buy one next year!!
I'm a current 981 owner and I think the 718 sounds fine. Yeah it lacks some of the beautiful whine that the 981 has but the 718 sounds like an old skool 4 banger race car. Very likely I'll consider a 718 Cayman T next year.
Insane how different it sounds in real life! I bet all the people that are hating about the sound have never heard it accelerating right in front of their faces
Well, bc of ppl like you, i thought the sound wouldnt be so bad. But it actually is exactly like in the video. (Maybe you are listening on your phone speaker ??) It makes noise, i mean its loud, and for anyone who havent got any Porsche, yeah, it might be cool. Maybe. But it really isnt great, part of it is the fact that the acceleration is weird. The pitch doesnt change, it doesnt goes in the highs like you would expect of an engine, instead the volume just increase. By doing this, it completely ruins the perception of speed to my opinion. Driving a 981 GTS, i can however say that the streering is like WAAAAAY better on the 718. It feels so much different, its crazy. Much more precise and agile and direct. The châssis is also excellent, but having the -20 sport châssis on my 981 and trying one with PASM -20, i found the 718 to be way more confortable, yet better around the corners, but being too disconected of the road compared to the 981. I was genuinely excited about the 718, thinking it would be the best Cayman/Boxster with a manual gearbox, being a great choice considering the long ratios of the gearbox bc of being a turbo engine. But the confort and the sound ruined it for me.
Here's the real deal : The flat 6 screams and wails like a bitch. The flat 4 growls and grunts like a beast. Both are fine for a sports car. At the end of the day, it's all about performance and engineering. Done! Have a great day!!
Sounds very good for a 4 cylinder! I can't understand all the useless hate. You can even hear similarities with the 4.0 V8 from Mercedes. The Cayman still remains as a proper sports/dream car for me.
You would understand it, if you had the "old" 6-cylinder-version und looked for an new alternative... Similarities with a V8?! That is a joke, isn`t it?
ERTZZTRE The tyre squeals, the way the upshifts sound and the deep exhaust note reminded me so much of the current C63. Come on, neglating this would be pure ignorance.
As a car-enthusiast you can differentiate between 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder-engines easily. Of course a 4-cylinder can be upvalued by misfires ans shift-pops, but the engine sound remains weak.
I just put my headphones up and yeah now it is more clearly to say that there still is a difference. Btw if anyone is a car fanatist and enthusiast, I am. Guess I should upgrade my phone in terms of speakers...
Having driven a 718 before, it sounds a whole lot better than my 4 cylinder N20 engine. The car drives like a beast and still sounds pretty good (although of course not as smooth as a 6 cylinder).
Just ordered the same car in Night Blue metallic, 3 months away so will watch this daily till lm in the seat. Thanx so much for putting this together 🍻
Best auto vid extant. Exactly what i want to see and hear. The sound of the engine cooling in the cool morning air. Fantastic plot and execution. As to the car? Sounds better than i expected but i much prefer my 981 6. I even prefer the sound of my 968. That engine had great induction sound. They are all great to drive in their own way like every Porsche I've ever driven.
I don't mind the sound. I have a 2013 Boxster currently and yes, the engine sounds better in mine that it does in this. However, I also like torque, and my car has none. I want a 718, just waiting for a 2 year-old one
Everyone who says this car sounds shit is stupid! The sound is actually very good and dont compare it with a subaru because this car is so much better! If you drive this 718 you will be amazed!
Didn't like the idea of 4 cylinder But damn 1:12 sounds brutal. Guys those Sounds are the future with electric cars in the Future I would not be suprised when you have to supress your old 6 and 8 cylinders to be allowed to still drive it
+Marcus Yes, PASM is on board. But it cannot be that low cause I didn't have problems where I had problems with other cars as i.e the S8 plus with air suspension lowered.
Point is that the four cylinder is a much better engine, faster everywhere, torquier and quieter. The six was noisy strained and slow in comparison and yes I have just upgraded and discovered the whole car is better. All for a more than £50k saving over the bulkier, heavier 911.
It sounds like a turbo 4. What did you guys expect? The problem is when you think of a Porsche, you don't expect it to sound like this. You expect that flat 6 scream.
anyone who's heard the flat 6 cayman scream to 7.5k rpms is going to be really disappointed by this. you could almost say that the flat 6 has ferrari-like sound, whereas this 4 cylinder engine sounds like american muscle
Hate this color, but love the car. I've never been a fan of yellow on any car. It's screams "look at me" and not in a good way, but that's just my opinion. Also, I love the sound of the new 2.5 turbo, sounds awesome!
For me, yes. Don't like flashy colors, never have, but it's just my preference. I like metallic colors. My favorite Porsche colors are agate grey and gt silver.
Love how you put this together & will watch again & again l just cant get enuff of this car. Not many things can satisfy like the 718. Ive have become addicted to the note.
The Porsche has engine in the right place ,a lot lighter, a Porsche badge, with a low cost tanning you can keep up with a c63s on straight line and rape m4 on the track
No, the only shit is in your head, buddy! You are certainly not smarter than Porsche..., you idiot! They know best what's good for their own cars and company, you disgusting douche!!

Is this car fitted with PASM? I'm concerned about the lowered ride height as there's quite a steep hill before the entrance to my garage
+Marcus Yes, PASM is on board. But it cannot be that low cause I didn't have problems where I had problems with other cars as i.e the S8 plus with air suspension lowered.
I see. Thanks for the reply!
Marcus PASM Sport? Or just regular PASM?

RIP beautiful 6 zylinder, we will miss you forever...
the sound, while not horrible in its own right, has become distinctively less Porsche, and to my ear not as enticing or engaging.
Does the cayman s come stock with a spoiler?
LeaveMyGun yeah even the bade model caymen had a spoiler
For first sport car I think this 718s is a great car
Amazing sound
Chimie d'alcool not really....listen to the old gts
Sounds good for a 4 cyl, sounds terrible for a Porsche.
Have you ever heard about 356 model? Or about 550 spyder? Same flat four engine. New cayman sounds like a porsche classic, it is ok)
Neither were turbos and sound absolutely nothing like the new 718Cayman... Porsche is going to be sitting on a great many 718 Caymans by years end
mega nice Aufnahmen!
Did I just hear a sound close to a six cylinder inside...
Not at all
Anyone else think that it sounds abit like BMW's 4.4L V8? Get to 02:35

D LG I respect, but that colours are boring, for sedans are ok but sport cars for me have to be exotic

Thanks Greta!
0~60mph didn't look fast at all.
But sounds great, better than vast majority of cars.
0-100 approximately 4-4.5 and its not very very fast. OK ask max his redbull to buy
