It’s time for an almighty rear-wheel-drive drag race!
Mat’s rolled up to the start line a Porsche Cayman GTS, and he’s going head-to-head with an Alpine A110 S & a Toyota Supra!
So let’s see how they compare. Starting with Mat’s Cayman GTS, it’s powered by a 4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six that puts down 400hp & 420Nm. It weighs in at 1,405kg and will cost you around £65,000. It’s got one big issue though - it’s a manual!
Alongside him, we have the Alpine A110 S. Under the bonnet you’ll find a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine, although it’s noticeably down on power compared to the Porsche, putting down 290hp & 320Nm. However, it’s an automatic, and it’s oh-so light, tipping the scales at just 1,114kg!
Then finally we have the Supra. With a 3-litre straight-six BMW engine under the bonnet, it’ll produce 340hp & 500Nm, and just like the Alpine, it’s automatic. It’s the heaviest car here, though, weighing 1,495kg.

The lightness of the Alpine should make it epic on a twisty track.
A french media did a track test of a A110 while comparing with the GR Supra and the Cayman and the Alpine did a great job but the Cayman is way too developped to be surpassed

I’m pleasantly surprised how quick the Alpine is. The S model really makes up for lower horsepower base model. Gorgeous design and so lite!
Non-S model is already quite fast. Being 300 to 400kg lighter than your competitors helps a lot
The 300kg difference for the Alpine make a huge difference in a track or twisty mountain road. It all depends on the use and the landscape.

Well done Renault for making such an agile car with a pretty much small displacement. It competed really well against those sport cars
And it's way better in curvy roads, the Alpine is designed for small roads, not for doing top speed on highway.

The cayman’s gearing is so tall it truly should have been in a lower gear than the other cars or just had a race with optimal sportiest settings. The manual in that car will do over 70 in second gear meaning that 3rd at 50 is a major disadvantage. Regardless, great video as always!
That is the whole point though. It shows the disadvantage that Porsche built into that car with the unrealistic gearing they gave it. Meanwhile in the standing start and braking it's able to show its strengths. If you tailor the tests to minimise the weaknesses of one car then what's the point?
Exactly I think it would have smashed the supra on higher revs. That’s one hell of a engine for an N/A car

I really enjoyed this one. The Alpine did well for a 1.8, often had the jump on the Porsche, before the Caymans raw power shone through. The Supra has some seriously impressive midrange torque. The Porsche though, once it gets into it's stride is a missile, but just like my Boxster S it seems to need to be worked hard for the power. Porsche brakes are also phenomenal. The Alpines attempts at drifting were hilarious.
The Alpine is amazing, tiny, and it's so light any tuning you do to it you gain big time. Would love to have one, it's basically guaranteed classic status too. Mental to think the Porsche has over 100 horsepower more and doesn't exactly fly away from it. You could probably add 20 horsepower to the Alpine and it would make up the difference!
Form what i found on the internet , the limit of this engine with a stage 2 seems to be at around 320 hp (310 stage 1) . Sooo yes , you can get a bit more out of this little pocket rocket .
well you don’t know about cars then because the spline weights 300kg less has a 7 speed dual clutch which is amazing for kick down whilst the porsche is a manual lmao

@@Ersy90 yeah, Carwow has done a video with GT4 in PDK and 2.5 GTS and GTS did much better 0-60 time all because of its launch control and gearing

That last roll was such a good demonstration of how different those transmissions and power outputs can be.
I honestly believe that porsche understated the power of that GTS, what a machine
May not always be the fastest, but to go for a fun drive I’d take the Alpine every time

Interesting 1/4 mile time from the Alpine S. I recall that Carwow ran a Litchfield stage-1 tuned red Alpine A110 in a previous drag race and it ran an 11.7 which is a full second faster, supposedly with 300bhp (so only marginally more power and torque than the S). 🤔

It would have been nice to see a rolling race from 50, but the cars in their optimal gear for acceleration, as the Porsche took forever to actually reach the power, but went like a rocket when it finally did
I would pick the Alpine, as it shows you don't need loads of power and weight to have fun :). Also, could you make a video talking about Aston Martin's plans for a new V12 Vantage? :D

I am mein it has 100 HP more than the alpine and 60 HP more than the supra. No big surprise? Ist is more impressive that the turbo S beats cars with a lot more HP. The GTS is nothing special a regular a45s or rs3 is Even faster

@@DizzyMan24 Supra is a 6 cylinder turbo, Porsche is a 6 cylinder non turbo, yeah it's impressive. Same reason the Z06 V8 in the C8 is impressive. High revving NA engines are a dying breed, anyone can slap a turbo on to a car and make big power.

@@marco_skate1613 The Cayman isn’t built for straight line speed, the 911 is. It’s built for handling and nimbleness. Many people forget that the Cayman is a whole different creature than the 911.

Would have been interesting to see how a Cayman GTS PDK had faired against the other 2, especially on rolling starts. I believe the gearing is a little shorter so I would have thought the gaps would be shorter to catching. Also I would expect the PDK version to monster the drag race even more compared to the other two
Yep the PDK box is always faster 0-60-100-150 in Porsches. Trust me I know ;)

He was in the wrong gear for the rolling races. He should have been in 1st gear for the first race and 2nd for the second race (not 3rd which goes to nearly 120mph!)
I have a 718 GTS, same colour, but mine's PDK... the base model with the manual gearbox and zero options, starts at £68,358. Let's face it, no one will buy a Porsche with zero options added and I can see the Cayman tested here has LED lights, that's £1400 for starters. Realistically, for a low spec manual GTS you're looking at around £75k. Mine was nudging £80k. Just wish on these comparisons they'd put up the price of the actual car shown, including the options fitted to it. The last one with a Golf R that was £51k with options, caption said £40k and then all these numpties jump in with their comments to say what good value it was. LOL. Come chaps, sort it out.
A few visual optional extras don't make a car faster though do they.
That’s the nice part about the GTS. All performance oriented options (SPASM, PTV, Active Engine Mounts) are already included in the base price. So the base price is an accurate reflection of the performance you get.

You need to get a 2021 Supra. They have 382 horsepower and other performance things that have been changed.

Nope, not Nissan. The initial development partner was Caterham (that's why it's so light) but Caterham had to pull out as the development costs where to high, after that Renault (sport) developed the car on its own.

I really do think that Mat needs to give the count down authority to someone else for the rolling races. That's how he wins them because his reaction is at least half a second quicker than the competitors by articulation and radio to radio interpretation on the other drivers.
Please let the special guest drivers do the rolling count down instead. Or Yanni. Or anyone but Mat.
That's a bad idea. They're more likely to botch it up in exactly the way you described, and it'll be inconsistent. They're also more likely to be overwhelmed with all the things they have to do than Mat, who's done it a thousand times.
He's likely to perform it the same way every time ... he just needs to learn precisely when to step on the gas in a way that doesn't give him advantage (or disadvantage). This way it will be more consistent than for random people to be given that responsibility every time.

@@arr0gant1 I think a lot of people underestimate the 718 S/GTS 4 cylinder. The best 4 cylinder out there. Lots of torque, great for daily driving. With some aftermarket shocks the GTS can keep up with the GT4 on track.

Doing a 3rd gear 50MPH roll in the Cayman is like starting way out of VTEC.
So nice to see real gear changes (in the Cayman) too.
Not always the same speed for the start is convenient for everyone, make the race with a stroke at a different speed, 40mph, 60mph. 80mph. And take away the comfort mode
It's dense. 50mph in third for the cayman is WAAAY outside its powerband. Why not let the drivers chose their own gear?

@@raphaelmeillat8527 I can't find artificial pops pleasing at all. Even without the pops, the 4 banger just doesn't hit the same angles as the flat 6. But yes, we can agree that the Supra sounds muted and sad. Nowhere near the straight 6 motors from BMW or Toyotas yesteryear.

The UK cars aren't 335bhp, more like 370-400bhp. Lots of Dyno videos on YT shortly after launch. Toyota understating the actual BHP...

thought the A91's were closer to the stated figures, around 400bhp or a little over stock? Yeah, they don't sound nearly as good with the particulate filters. Shame about the reliability of the B58B30O1 in the A91, so far the A90 B58B30C engine seems pretty solid 🤞

Recommendation: do one rolling race where every car starts in the gear where it‘s in its perfect power-band! As you said, the Porsche ist far away from 400 PS at 3000 revs

One accelerated hard near me on the M25 and it sounded epic. That engine is incredible.
Even though I respect your opinion, the Cayman really looks good, but IMO the Alpine looks really beautiful. I wish they sold it in the US but most French cars don’t sell their cars in North America, besides Bugatti. Idk why we don’t get Peugeot, Citroen, and Renault in the US.

never knew about the Alpine up until yesterday. After a long drive down to the south of France, I saw 3 of them in total.
