- Please watch in 720p HD (adjust at bottom right of video). What an incredible night it was at the House of Blues in Hollywood last week, when Joe Bonamassa sat in for two songs with his friend, guitar legend Eric Johnson. Nothing like two geniuses standing mere feet from you, doing their thing............. oh, boy.

I would have been totally blown away by this IF I had never heard Clapton do it
Or Cream for that matter, together they achieved masterful renditions of the song.
It's 2024 and this is the first I've seen of this video! Joe playing the Firebird I gave him!!!
I'm sure Eric is so proud of how far his very best student has come along! ;)
Fucking A, the articulation of both these guys is spot on.
technically, eric johnson is the best, he can play everything perfectly
I watch Joe play, and only one word comes to mind... AMAZING!
Watching this reminds me of watching SRV have Albert King sit in with him and showing him up.
My two favorite players! Eric is my overall favorite of all-time while Joe is my favorite guy whose catalog that I've recently discovered and devoured. Joe's technique is beyond amazing!!! (I do wish that Eric was a bit louder though!!!)
Joe pulled so many styles out of his bag of tricks on this one. Fr the obvious Clapton to Jeff Beck to Page and even a nod or two to Eric Johnson. You can't help but smile while watching this
Not only can they both play like hell, they're both a couple of gentlemen.
That is by far the best I have ever heard Mr. Joe Play. My God. has has evolved into a guitar God.
Keep in mind the camera and mic are right in front of Joe's rig. Might be a good reason he is much loader than Eric. I love these two guys!
Somebody said that being on a concert is the same excitement as being on a football match, but here everybody is a fan of the same team. And that rocks! Goose bumps!
I just listened to Clapton playing steppin' out. WOW!
Next time the recorder needs to be by Johnson, which might never happen ,but all the videos I've watched with JB ,his amp volume is blowing every other players away by far!!
Two of the best guitarists on the planet.
no
Two of most favorite guitar players of all time.
Love them both. Joe plows over all of it and takes no prisoners.
Only One Joey B period !
You can tell by the look on Eric's face that he genuinely likes JB's playing and respects him as a player.
Joe's well, never runneth dry.
100 people commented they can't hear EJ, it's because it's being recorded in front of JBs amp front row duuuhhhhhhh! Lmao wtf
I know.... five years later and they are still making the same comments. :)
It’s so obvious with the crappy audio quality 🤦🏼♂️
I was there wow what a show. Both were amazing thanks Peggy.
+1800NoFault - Thanks for chiming in with such positivity, Peggy. It was GREAT live, wasn't it?
JOE'S UNBELIEVABLE!!! A GENIUS MUSICAL!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
My cheeks are still hurting from smiling so hard-great post!!
GOD DAMN JB MAKES HIS PLAYING LOOK SO EASY!!!!!!!
The more you play, the easier it is. I can't imagine how many hours Joe or Eric or any of the real good players have spent playing.
Joe looks and sounds like Joe to me....no competing just playing his ass off! When I pay money to see someone play I expect that! These guys are great! Great video, thanks for this!
WOW ERIC"S GUITAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH LOUDER. HE IS A GREAT PLAYER BUT JOE IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST OUT THERE TODAY. I"VE SEEN HIM TWICE HE IS SO FRIGGING FANTASTIC, THE BEST OF THE BEST.
It's funny watching JB play EJ licks that he's been so heavily influenced by. JB is good but EJ in his prime was so creative and was doing things that no other guitarists at the time were doing. I'm sure JB studied and learned most of EJ's music. I can clearly hear a lot of EJ in JB's music, especially the Black Communion material.
Joe said his playing was largely influenced by EJ and I think EJ knows that
@@CreamBootlegs thats funny i dont recall clapton ever approaching pentatonic scales the way johnson does.
Freakin awesome...two of my favorite guitarist on one stage....nice!
joe never stopping playing...
Both of these guys are so awesome on this Eric Clapton classic - they put there own stamp on it while paying tribute to Eric. Joe really tore it up! Eric should have been louder and taken a few more choruses and stretched out a little more like we know he can do. Loved it!
such varied technique, one of my favorites from joe, will be studying it for weeks.
Best sounding Firebird I’ve ever heard!
Experiencing awesomeness overload.
EJ you will always be the master!
turn Eric's volume up for god's sake!
Thanks libbysvideos Another Jem!
Excellent. Really enjoyed it.
So good
EJ is superb
Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like Joe's playing, but it seemed like it was more of a competition for him then just enjoying playing with Eric. You can feel it in his solos and sense it in Eric. Kinda like a college football player against a pro mature hall of fame player. :)
I get what you're saying, it always seems like he's trying to play as much as he can instead of singing a solo out
Lots of cheers before the song starts... And then none. If that riff doesn't send a shiver down your spine, enough to make you scream/cheer/clap, you most probably don't know/never heard the song; looks like NO ONE in the audience did.
Turn EJ up. His volume is way to low. Joe is drowning him out.
+Tom Howland - I was in front of Joe's amp.... not Eric's. :) That's the only reason for the imbalance. It was my choice to stand where I stood - going for the visuals before the audio....
Jose cutting through Eric is not that's the difference
@@BITESIZEJONES yeah Eric typically uses very little treble in his eq so he ends up sounding drowned whenever he is with another guitarist
Amazing!Wish Eric sounded louder.
Thanks for sharing!
My thoughts exactly!!!
@cchaneysr Don't know with you already heard it, but Eric Johnson played in a band called Mariani, which is really great! Seach for their work... really raw & rocker EJ.
Epic..
Still cant beat the ole Bluesbreakers Version.,.
that firebird sounds fockin' awesome!!!i mean,i know, its the player,of course but daaaaaaaaamn!!!!
The thing I love about Clapton is that he is so gracious onstage with other players. He seems to be content just to be there. I remember seeing him on video of Chuck Berry's birthday concert or something - he was just sitting back until time for his solo and then he steps forward, plays an amazing solo, then steps back into the background. Awesome. Joe seems to feel he has to prove he can play "better" than whoever he is onstage with. I thought the same thing when I saw the video of he and Derek
Bro, thats eric Johnson, clapton probably had no idea this was happening
@@mcspankies1799 👌😄
Joe, Joe, Joe!!!! Wow
At one point Eric started doing a cool shred part and nodded his head to invite Joe to play on top of it and he couldn't and started smiling...pretty funny
Like father like son
Joe is ripping it up !!!
When the joe was been influence from the great eric
Joe sure does make that Fender Hot Rod Deluxe sing!? I'm sure its on 10. lol
" Rock On Good People"
eric johnson is showing respect, if he turns it on full blast the show is over.and Joe is great but eric has some hidden power only diplayed when needed
muy goloso de los solos es joe bonammassa ..
I'm a big fan of both musicians, Joe's guitar amp is closer to the the recorder's IPhone than Eric's amp, hence the level difference. Everyone would benefit from just enjoying the music being made.
+Neil S - You're right about everything, Neil, except that I shot this with a camera and not an iPhone. I like your last sentence, especially. Thank you.
the beano album changed my life.... clapton is god
My favorite live tone of Joe's is still that Gigliotti Tele from the Rockpalast show. Check out the clips on RUclips. This Firebird lacks the sustain I'm used to from him....could be other toys missing in the line of course.
The thing is, if you are not gracious to your mentors, they will not be gracious to you the next time around. There is a time to to be aggressive, but when one of your idols invites you onstage to play at THEIR show is not that time. Maybe that's why he's had to do email campaigns etc, to try and get on Letterman and Leno. Maybe he's been blackballed for his attitude. Either way, Joe has earned his place as one of the best all around guitarist of all time.
Joe's amp is closer to the camera and pointing straight at it, that's why joe is 'louder'. It has bugger all to do with the sound engineer. Amp's tend to be very directional. Plus Joe is using a small fender combo by the looks of it not his 4x12 rig.
Eric all the way..... sorry Joe
Now kiddos that's how you shred a guitar !
Camera is right in front of Joes amp and Eric's is turn sideways on the opposite side of the stage. I'm sure it sounded wonderful in the house.
I dunno i think good rhythm gtr is the most under rated but most essential skill to have...it will definitely help you get and and keep gigs. Great playing by both.
Kill me now...This is perfection
I think it's a matter of EQ and dynamics too. EJ's tone is smoother (and his more recent tone even muddy) and therefore doesn't have the bite of JB's or the presence of the drummer's cymbals .
You need to be further back and get the whole mix from the P.A. and stage. A stereo mic. on a pole above the people(objects absorb the sound. Tripod in the middle of the room. Great video!
Two Gaints! :)
Will some one Please ask Mr. Bonamassa top stop playing "Cross Roads".
I just love JB. , , ,
and he generally plays a guitar fitting to to the track or history of the number, , , , ,
Can someone please tell me where the Firebird comes from in this piece,
I'm pretty sure that's his 63 firebird 1
clapton's fire bird guitar wooow
Eric sounds great although being half the volume
looks like a 112 rd50 music man on the ej side
my fav live shoot out amp
@lamac23 I also think the microphone used for recording the gig ducks and somehow JB's tone cuts through better/ doesn't collide with the bassist.
why is Eric's guitar so low in the mix. Sort of lop sided. Both fantastic guitarist. What a treat!!!
this song is like "lazy!of deep purple.
Karaoke Joe Yyyaaaaawwwwwwnn!
Why? Because any good host will always let his guests light shine as bright
as possible. That's why.
Eric Johnson is thinking: "you son of a bitch...you rip off my style and turn down my amplifier...." from his expression that must be what his thoughts were ;-)
+Nikolai Lyazkov yeah totally.......it does make sense.... notice how JB tones down his EJ licks for this get together.....
+Nikolai Lyazkov Joe sounded louder because the camera (and mic) were right in front of Joe's amp. If it had been in front of Eric's amp you would be complaining about Eric having a guest and then drowning him out. Think before you bitch.
+Nikolai Lyazkov , I'm sorry to read your interpretation of what happened that night, but, you are wrong. I was there - it is my video. Joe was Eric's invited guest. Do you think Eric would have invited someone to play not one, but two songs with him if he resented him? No, he would not. Joe did not turn Eric's amp down, the sound is uneven for one reason, and one reason only - MY CHOSEN position - proximity to Joe. Joe and Eric like and respect one another. You do them both a disservice with your incorrect assumptions.
+John Swinburne - It's my video - please read my reply to Nikolai. I can assure you, there was not bad blood that night. I was there when it happened, and for the rest of the night as well.
+stringslinger6 - I shot the video - everything you said is correct. Thank you.
This is cool, BUT ERIC CLAPTON is the master of this track. His live 13 min version on Cream Live is insane.......and he's only 23 at the time. EC is GOD!
ruclips.net/video/sjIQhONpxh0/видео.html insuperable
I think Eric does his best in a softer, Fusion surrounding...but that may just be me?!?!
Peace...
MJW
Never seen EJ with a Les Paul before.
Blackmore took this tune and made Lazy out of it. Cool, as he is, never denied it.
Hey guys ! listen to Cream steppin' out -back bay theatre and then you laug...
I mean I love Eric Johnson and Joe but I have to say, Joes tone, level, and sound is way better. I can't even hear Eric.
Don't understand Bonamassa & his need to step into Eric's lead solo on several instances. Unfortunately, not the first time. I remember watching a special to commemorate Leo Fender's contribution to music which featured a young Joe Bonamassa along with Robben Ford. Of course Robben being the consummate professional played it off. Joe was still playing when I finally located the Pepto Bismal in the medicine cabinet. Check out; ruclips.net/video/9U1lSuEeZPQ/видео.html
JB's rig is notoriously loud as well.
Camera is right in front of Joe's amp...
gee wizz I made it to 3.51
Joe's tone is killer...anyone know what amp he's using??
Look at 1:52 Eric's amp is sideways and miked and only really heard through the P.A. mains and monitors.
What the f happened to Eric's guitar volume?
Just the position of my camera and Joe's amp, I assure you.
@lamac23 - I'm not certain, but it may have just been a matter of my position. I wish it were more balanced, but, these are the risks I take when I get myself that close to the artists, I'm afraid. Please be sure to check out my second video I shot that night - Crossroads. Just go to my channel and do a search. Thanks. :)
@METALHEAD5396 Hmmm...never even heard of them! Gotta check one out but probably will get major sticker-shock!?? :) Thanks!!
