- In this video, we will review the clock back to the 1996 Olympic Men's 4x100m Final. This video show a great side-shot close up that highlights Team Canada's (1st leg: Robert Esmie - 2nd leg: Glenroy Gilbert - 3rd leg: Bruny Surin and 4th leg: Donovan Bailey) historic victory and inspiration performance in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 1996 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXVI Olympiad and also referred to as the Centennial Olympic Games, was an international multi-sport event that was held from July 19 to August 4, 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia.

1996 Olympic 4x100m Relay - Mens (English Version)
What I love most about this is Bruny Surin in 3rd raising his hands in victory just after he handed the baton to Donavan Baily. He knew nothing could possibly go wrong then.
Canada's exchanges were awesome. This is what students of the relay should study.
Exchange students?
Glenroy Gilbert the second runner of Canada is one of my coach at ottawalions .... I'm so proud of him !
Robert Esmie, Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey. So great!
this race was absolutely amazing.
this is probably the best sprinting video on youtube. America get hammered and the sheer joy of the commentators and the Canadian sprinters alike add to the greatness, then on top of that its a high quality video at a great angle.
And also the run is superb! Brilliant handoffs and great efforts all round by the Canadians.
i've lost interest in the olympics over the years but 1996 sprints I'll never forget. Canada represented excellently.
Not a nice way to say it, but I agree people of African descent are exceptionally great in athletics....They seem to have an extra "spring" in their legs, it's cool to watch... Cheers to all of you and I hope you're enjoying London 2012 :)
Thanks for posting that. Great run.
@LJfromNJ91 Right-on! So much that Surin and Bailey didn't have to care about it anymore. Il was already in the bag. The first hand-over of the baton in between Esmie and Gilbert was absolutely perfect and swift. The Gilbert to Surin was a little more laborious, but okay. The last one was just a mere formality.
Robert Esmie 10.47
Glenroy Gilbert 9.02
Bruny Surin 9.25
Donovan Bailey 8.95
Not the fastest ever 2nd leg for Gilbert, but still absolutely motoring
People, pleas Google Carlton Chambers! He was apart of this team! Do your research before commenting!
awesome race. exciting
when i think about it..bailey was a true 200m runner, even though he did not run that event..until he backed off at about 80 meters dude was still accelerating..see, usain is not the first to shut it down at 80 meters and show for the camera. carl did it, ben did it as well..
Plus I was talking more about GB vs. USA in 2004 than Canada vs. USA in '96. If you look at the lineups: First leg: Gardener (PB 9.99) vs. Crawford (9.88). 2nd leg: Campbell (10.04) vs. Gatlin (9.85 at the time) 3rd leg: Devonish (10.13 at the time) vs. Miller (9.98) and anchor: Lewis-Francis (10.04) vs. Greene (9.79).
It's only the US (and Jamaica this year) that's able to field four sub-10s runners. That doesn't guarantee victory though, if you're up against an inspired team with good changes
Wooow what a race super fast
Don’t get me wrong here, the best team won, and it was a great victory for Canada. But there was a lot of anger in the US when both Tim Montgomery and Carl Lewis were left off this team. Both guys posted slower times individually, but both, especially Lewis, had significantly better relay experience. Still, Canada’s exchanges were just perfect. The US still would have lost, but I still think it would have been more competitive.
Anyone who thinks Bailey not putting his hand up would've resulted in a world record has no clue at all. The world record at that time was 37.40 and Canada ran 37.69, Bailey didn't even lose a tenth
Btw that was the only time since that race is in the Olympics that the USA lost it. They won every other time or they got disqualified...
In 1996-1997 Canada was called "The fastest country in the world" since we won 100m, 4x100m and the F1 championship. (Villeneuve)
Surin was also the 60 meters world champion in 1993 and 1995! Plus Surin, Gilbert and Esmie won Bronze in the 1993 world championship, running the same positions. The only difference was Bailey ran anchor from 1995, in 1993 Atlee Mahorn, 200 meter Canadian Record Holder ran the anchor spot!
Répondre à cette vidéo... When Bruny came out of the curve in front of everybody, I was yelling in my living room. O)) A great 4. And not all from Jamaïca. Haïti and Trinidad too.
I don't think Canada would of broken the World Record in 1996, even if Bailey ran through the line. The one thing that alot of people fail to remember about the 1992 Team that set the World Record, Marsh, Burrell, Mitchell and Lewis, all were fantastic relay runners and at the time they set the world record ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th all time in the 100m. Lewis, Burrell and Marsh always competed in relays for SMTC in the beginning of the outdoor season
Bailey and Surin were great runners. (it was Bailey who was the '95 champion by the way, not Surin - the best Surin did was silver in '99) But Esmie and Gilbert weren't great individual runners. (good, but not great) They always raised their game for the relay though, just like Gardener, Devonish and Lewis-Francis for GB.
I touched that gold medal today.
i met the first runner for team canada
Not sure where you're getting your Home Depot facts, and I'd love to see the source. I did a quick google and found this for the US team: "The United States curling team, for example, each member receives a $300 per month stipend from the U.S. Olympic Committee, which doesn't even cover the costs of traveling and basic necessities. In fact, each member of the team has another job (or two) to cover other costs of the sport."
That has nothing to do with it. The Olympic TV scheduling is set up to change to particular events after certain ones are completed, to ensure the other events get equal coverage or the next event (if a big one) isn't missed.
The USA didn't even field a "great" team in the 4x100 that year anyway.
As a Brit I really enjoyed seeing Canada beat the US in Atlanta. Almost as much as seeing GBR beat them in 2004! Which proves you don't necessarily need great runners to win the relay. Who would've predicted that Gardener, Campbell, Devonish and Lewis-Francis would beat 'greats' like Crawford, (the now disgraced) Gatlin, Miller and Greene?
If Ben Johnson hadn't pissed in a bottle, we had a fantastic four in Seoul as well. Anyway, they are all on dope.
If Bailey didn't celebrate before the line, could they have broken the world record ?
wow..look at them accelerate!
also keep in mind the usa is a warmer climate and they have a population of 313 million and canada is what 34 million? that may have something to do with it.
Agreed....Canada would've been closer to 37.60 but not a WR... yes those you mentioned ran a lot with SMTC in things like Penn, Mt Sac, and even in those days the European meet promoters put on more 4x100 relays in hopes of WR
@chichibud31 They've lost other competitons since then. Canada won again at the '97 worlds, Great Britain won at the '04 Olympics (bad handoff between Justin Gatlin and Cobi Miller cost them), they didn't even make the Finals at the '05 worlds, won the '07 worlds, then Jamaica has taken over. By the way, that Canadian team in the mid 90's was great and they ran together all the time. Esmie, Gilbert, Surin, and Bailey. '95 and '97 world champs and '96 olympic champs.
CARLTON CHAMBERS was apart of this team!!!!
lol you have 300 million more people than Canada. I would hope you have more medals. What about the Winter Olympics? Canada sometimes gets more medals than the US.
GO CANADA
Both countries are double Canada's population.
Go CANADA!!
oh ,whoops never mind that was ben johnson....
Actually, whoops on you. Ben Johnson was 8 years earlier in 1988. Nice try though!
@beardfacee you do need great runners to win, just not famous ones.
seriusly there should be a 4x 800 meter relay
What you gonna do when the 4 x 100m canadian mens relay runs wild on you?!!!
Where is usa in 100m between Lewis.
Dammit, Canada lost the bronze this year....
Canada spends over $120 million for amateur summer sports, including their 'own the podium' program. :P
History was made the United States got
beat thanks to poor coaching who picked an unworthy 4x100 relay team. Not trying to take away from th Canadian's Men's Sprint Squad they were Awsome Bailey was my fav 100m man...
CARLTON CHAMBERS was apart of this team! Google him for more information. He didnt run in the finals because he was injured. Please do your research!
Aaaaaand we were just stripped of a Bronze. Fml.
god damn black people can run FAST!
our healthcare may be ''worldclass' however it's certainly not number 1
like I said, google him and read the articles! The proof is there! Do your research before commenting!
A bit off topic but Canadians are honest and we honestly spent far more in cash and lives saving UK and France in WW1 and 2.. :) And our healthcare is world class in Canada. I'm not sure what you mean..
He's balls to the wall fast for sure. But his starting ability is pretty poor.
If Donovan had the ability to get out of the blocks with the best of them, I have no doubt in my mind he could've set an incredible WR in the 100m.
Although I do know what you're getting at.. yes the US spends more money and so does China. That's because they have 10 and 100 times more people than Canada respectively.
It's world-class, but it's not world-class compared to other Western industrialised nations. The UK and France are typically ranked first and second, while Canada is in the twenties on most evaluations I've seen of nations' various respective health care systems.
We have too few doctors and not enough MRI machines for instance. Our waiting times are a joke and I know that here in Ontario OHIP doesn't cover most prescription drug costs or rehabilitation costs.
100m is the most important event of track and field, 200m is veryy important and 4x100m is more important than 4x4.
jamaica kicked all your asses :)
and how about the womens? sweeped the 100.
Lol.
lol the winter olympics are as important as something not very important.
no asafa powell is
bailey was really good, powell is way better.
bailey's pb: 9.84
powells: 9.74 world record
that's curling my friend, curlers are not as big as ''swimmers''. Not a good thing to compare it to.
That actually makes it more difficult to have an effective system. Notice how most of the top health care systems are in under-populated countries like the Scandinavian states, Ireland, and Iceland?
Here's a comeback...well you would know what's tha't like since the Americans got pushed around real good on the track in the last Olympics. They were eating everyone's dust. Lol
@MrChiffy Don't be smug - we've shortchanged every sport outside hockey for over decades and the current is the result. And I might add my mom waited over a year for knee surgery. I'm not a paid Republican either, I'm a Canadian who sees what's happening.
Arrogance, or joy? Relax
"have more sex"???? how on earth is that measured...come on now SERIOUSLY??!!
lol atleast canada has won a war
And for the record, the Men's USA 100m team that year, PERIOD, wasn't even "good."
So to be 110% "proud" and happy, I wouldn't be. I'd rather beat someone at full strength, not at half.
But where's Canada now? LOL
I'd rather be like France and Great Britain to be honest. Both have better athletics records and vastly superior health care systems.
The notion that we have a good health care system is unfortunately just that: a notion. It's nothing special compared to other industrialised nations.
so? last i checked tyson gay didnt even make the 100m final.
and who gives a shit about swimming... u can do so many events in that in track its impossible to do more than 2 running events.
body, I've seen 2 women from russia rip the 400, and 200m. russia's weather is not so good. stop with the baseless ideology
"At least" nothing. They LOST. If you don't win, guess what??...you LOSE-RS. Lol.
ohhhh, cheap shot
Still love watching this, except for when Bailey holds his hand up. Too arrogant, not very Canadian and lost a world record. Arrrrgh
You're so angry at America. And yes we are all those things, yet we remain superior. Got any answers for that?
no asafa powell is
bailey was really good, powell is way better.
bailey's pb: 9.84
powells: 9.74 world record
