      @@Revolver1981 How do you know? Michael ran a 19.32 in the 200! He's not that slow to have Bailey just leave him like that. Bailey would have to be capable of a 18.8 or something, in the 200 meter to leave Michael like he's nothing. I just don't think Bailey was faster than Bolt. I would've loved to see a rematch.

    Johnson was one of the fastest people on the planet at that time, however, where Canadians had a problem was, when the American's did the old switcheroo by saying that it was the 200m that was the traditional fastest man, when everyone knows it's the 100 meter.. so even when Canada finally had a official world champion worlds fastest man, the American's were screaming that no, it was actually the 200 meter, which was news to the rest of the known world. Both were very fast, but Bailey was the true fastest man.

      TBH, it is both sad and pathetic. It’s almost like a stereotype that Americans have this arrogant belief that they are better than everybody else in the world. So much so that they have to divide a 200 m race in half to prove that the time was better. Logically, that doesn’t make any sense because there’s no evidence to support Michael Johnson ran both halves at the same time of 9.66 seconds. He could’ve ran the first 100m in 10 seconds and the last half in 9 seconds or vice versa.

    I remember watching this live when I was 9 y/o. Once Bailey passed Johnson on the turn, Johnson knew he wouldn't catch up in the final 75m and likely faked that quad injury.

    • @Hotforyourbob

      Tom Hanlon How do you know he didn't pull out of the American Championships just to make his "injury" seem legitimate? I'm not saying I know what really happened one way or the other (I have no proof), but I find it very hard to believe that he coincidentally blew out his quad right after Bailey passed him.

    • @Hotforyourbob
      @Hotforyourbob 10 лет назад +15

      That is ridiculous. There was an article in the Toronto paper the next day saying Bailey's coach saw Johnson was favoring his quad and knew he would get hurt if Bailey pushed the pace. He wouldn't miss the American Championships (a race that really counts) if he wasn't injured.

      Michael felt the pine and didnt want to take more risque to damage him self for one stupid race, because if he ( Michael) continued runing with pine he may beat baily but just barely and Michael is used to beat his opponents by meters...I think if he didnt felt the pine and if the race finished normal, Michael would beat baily with at least 3 meters...Baily would lead the race in the first 60 meter, Michael would catch him at 80 meter and he will forget him right after 90m.

      This fight between them reminds us the ugly side of Track and Field, why do athletes in this sport act like douches. I never understood why MJ started this fight to begin with by claiming he is the fastest man, he was not a 100 m specialist and he never won at 100 m, the title of the fastest man was Donovan Bailey the 100 m champ. But that doesn't excuse Bailey ugly behaviour either. But they say the reason T&F stars act so cocky and unsportsman like is to psychologically dismantle their rivals so that they can win, and I am reminded of Formula 1 where the drivers also trash talk to get a mental edge.

      @LoneGunmanProd 2 года назад +7

      Johnson's 150m split in Atlanta was significantly faster than what Bailey ran here. Johnson was the faster runner. He either got nervous coming out of the turn and gave up, didn't take the event seriously and just showed up for a check, or got unlucky with the injury. Anyone who thinks Bailey would be faster over an in-shape Olympic form Johnson doesn't understand track.

    • @runningthor1999

      @@LoneGunmanProd I’m talking top end speed though… it’s indisputable that Bailey’s was higher than that of Johnson. Johnson had better speed maintenance, as shown by his 200 and 400 times, but in terms of pure straight-line velocity Bailey was faster. “What Bailey ran here” isn’t worthy of statistical comparison as he clearly pulled up before the end.

    Michael Johnson was the favorite only in the minds of those who didn't really know track and field. The person who got all of this started was Bob Costas during the 1996 Olympics. He came up with some stupid calculation based on Michael Johnson's then world record 200 meter time and concluded that Michael Johnson ran faster in his 200 world record race than Donovan Bailey did in his world record 100 meter race. That pissed Donovan off because Michael played into it and let his ego get the best of him. Pride comes before a fall.

    • @rgejsv
      @rgejsv 10 лет назад +10

      He's right Johnson 200m 19:32 so divide that by 2 which is 9:66 per 100m. Bailey's best 100m is 9:84, so Johnson is faster. So this STUPID CALCULATION proves Johnson is running quicker.

    • @js09js09
      @js09js09 10 лет назад +49

      rgejsv Costas' calculation was stupid because it ignores some simple facts. First, it is generally assumed that it takes an Olympic-calibre sprinter anywhere from 0.15-0.20 seconds to react to the starting horn. This reduces Johnson's 0.18 advantage per 100-metres from the 0.18 that you noted to basically non-existent. Second, Johnson's 2nd 100-metre portion came when he had already accelerated to top-speed and didn't have to go through any period of time reaching top speed. Therefore, it if flawed to include it in any argument determining fastest speed.

    • @rgejsv
      @rgejsv 10 лет назад +6

      joeshannon That makes no sense what so ever as Johnson has to react to the horn when he runs the 200m. Let me break it down for 200m in 19.32 seconds equals 10.3519669 m / s 100m in 9.84 seconds equals 10.1626016 m / s Johnson hence forth is faster end of discussion

    • @jimmymelon5630
      @jimmymelon5630 10 лет назад +29

      rgejsv You're talking out of your arse, mate. You get a flying start to your second 100m in a 200m race - at the half way point you're already burning rubber, so of course the 'calculation' makes it look that way because the second half isn't ran from a starting position where you have to build yourself up to a high speed.
      Mennea's old 200m record (19.72) was 'faster' than the likes of Carl Lewis and Burrell's 100m records until Burrell went 9.85 in 1994, but even before then nobody claimed that Mennea was the fastest man on earth / ever. That distinction always belongs to the 100m world record holder.
      Trust me, if Johnson could have ran the 100m and competed with the likes of Bailey or Maurice Green in it, he would have. That's where the biggest prestige (and biggest money) is. But he couldn't. Johnson had superior longevity and speed endurance, but he was never the FASTEST man on Earth. End of the day, it doesn't matter because the above race gave Johnson a valuable lesson to recognise that.

    • @rgejsv
      @rgejsv 10 лет назад +2

    Johnson had no chance on this day, the man is a legend on the racetrack, but look at that crazy start Bailey got. He was on the inside corner, a really tough turn (which he was supposed to be poor at and the turn was where Johnson a '200' and '400'm specialist who was used to 'the turn' would gain his advantage. Bailey was super primed and fired up for this race, wouldve probably been a WR if he had anyone to race against and didnt pull up before the end. IMO, the only guy in the world that couldve beaten Donovan on this day, is Usain Bolt, but man, that would be a crazy race.

    Normally you get credit for being the fastest man on the planet if you win the 100m Bailey won and established a new world record...but this was in atlanta and yanks dont like to be outshined...so they claimed MJ was the fastest due to his 200m time. They were arrogant and cocky, and Bailey stuffed it down their throats again. Canada was better for those 2 years no doubt and Bailey was easily the fastest.

Ben Johnson was no more enhanced than Carl Lewis, who failed three drug tests prior to 1988, and santa monica track club which was gov backed covered for him. Ben was the fastest. Linford Christie was the fastest in 1992. And Donavan Bailey in 1996. Even when they were not winning the Olympics they had the fastest man alive in Asofa Powell. Then there was Usain Bolt. The fastest man alive competing in 2024 is Kishane Thompson. He tightened up in the final and the US runner won. But since 1980, the fastest men alive have been born in Jamaica.

  • @js09js09

    Watch Johnson's running stride after he "pulled up". A runner with an actual injury wouldn't be running and slowing down with that type of movement. I used to be a runner and have pulled muscles midway through a race before. When you experience a muscle pull during a race, the affected leg just basically stops working. You start dragging it and have difficulty even keeping your balance. Johnson was still maintaining stride and looked to be in no danger of falling down.
