Pure math. It is because MJ's 200m 19.32 WR was faster than two 100m dashes (19.32s/2 = 9.66s per 100m) so Johnson's WR proved that this is fastest and "true"-est sprint discpline, at that time.

It was Johnson's ego that caused this entire race to even happen and look at the end result. Injury or not, Bailey's turn was excellent and he began leading Johnson even before the injury took place. There is no way in hell Johnson would have caught him. Bailey's talent had to do with pure power and nothing else. If you don't believe it, go watch his gold medal race in Atlanta 1996.
Old comment but that was the whole point of this. After Johnson won 200 gold in the 1996 olympics, Bob Costas (NBC pundit) said his 200m time was faster than Bailey's 100m time. Johnson and his team agreed with this so Johnson used to claim he was the fastest man alive. On the back of this 'injury' Johnson didn't compete in the US based championship a few weeks later, which meant he couldn't qualify for the world championships in Athens in 97... Unsurprisingly they changed or created a rule that said previous champions would be invited back. Johnson chose to only compete in the 400m and now Maurice Greene was on the scene he never claimed to be the fastest man alive again.
How on God's earth did Michael Johnson's performance not get nominated for an Oscar? Clearly he could have beat Jack Nicholson performance in "As good as it gets" ...lol
Interesting seeing the difference in bias and viewpoint from the US and Canadian broadcast of this race, both on RUclips. Really captured each country's opinion of the race.
Donovan Bailey was better than Michael Johnson over 150m. And the main reason was because running 150m; is standard practice for some Olympic level athletes that may need to prepare for 100m dash event.
He knew that Bailey was going to whip his butt so he faked a cramp he was not man enough to straight up face the loss that was coming, yes Johnson is a coward
Donovan had the highest top speed until Usain Bolt came along. Based on a pure definition of the world's fastest man, he was it from 1996 all the way to 2008. His top speed was unmatched until then as runners like Greene, Powell, Gatlin had faster times due to their much superior starts and first 50m but never attained his top speed.
@Track Nation The doped up Tyson Gay you mean? Besides put Donovan Bailey in 2006 with the advances in track and equipment and training, and he blows Gay out of the water.
A lot of you will disagree, but this was never really an American vs. Canadian thing. The media did its job in perpetuating this rivalry between the two nations, and I'm sick of it. This was simply a battle of egos (one being greater than the other apparently). Michael Johnson simply got his hurt when he knew he was going to lose that race. I'm an American, and I'll call it like I see it. He simply got outclassed. I thought he was overrated anyway, and I knew he was going to lose that race before it happened. 100 meters and 200 meters are entirely different races, and I knew Johnson wouldn't beat him in the straightaway. This race proved that, and it also proved that he didn't take his loss like a man. A real champion does this, and finds ways to get better. Johnson did not do that. Instead, he faked his injury, and even in his interview, he didn't sound like he was in pain. If he really tore his quad (or even his hamstring), he would've limped, which he didn't. He sat and squatted down. I've pulled quads and hamstrings before, and it hurts like hell to squat with those injuries. When he walked away from Donovan Bailey after the race, he did not limp. He walked as if he were fine (butthurt, but fine). He would've fell flat on his face running that fast had he really pulled something. I called BS the moment I saw it.

18:59 - Yeah, he squatted after he allegedly pulled a muscle. Which muscle exactly? It would hurt to squat if either were pulled. 19:13 - He walked away from Bailey rather quickly, looking embarrassed and defeated. That wasn't exactly a limp. 19:28 - Now he starts pretending he's injured. Good acting job. 21:00 - He didn't look like he was in any physical pain. Emotional pain? That I can see. He didn't even sound like he was in physical pain. You can hear it in a man's voice when he's in physical pain, and you can hear it when he's in emotional pain.
Not sure if I've ever pulled a muscle mid race or activity, but one it was his quad, which is less relentless than a hammy. With the adrenaline u have while running and blood moving ur still able to walk decently with minor pain. Cant run. But once adrenaline goes away and cold its start tightening and hurts. It also sometimes flares in pain levels from experiences. And when he was talking, the muscle wasnt engaged so it wouldn't hurt very much, at best he'd like feel it, but no pain
I also believe that when they got on the straight away Johnson saw Bailey pulling away from him and in my opinion i believe Johnson faked a cramp so he can have an excuse for losing .
MJ said Bailey could never beat on the curve but when Bailey did MJ turned chicken instead of finishing the race like a man. Didn't have the courtesy to shake his hand.
rapier1954 Farrell I was shocked to see that as well for it seem that MJ would be fine after he said if he was beaten but in reality MJ was a sore loser.
Bailey, a notorious slow starter (but who somehow set the WR for 50m) and isn't a good turn runner, somehow comes out ahead after 75m against the greatest turn runner in history up to that point. I still don't know how he did it. He was behind Frankie Fredericks and Ato Boldon initially in the 100m dash in 96. Johnson was ahead of the same two after 100m in the same Olympics. Somehow he came out ahead. Brilliant.
Watching this again no way Michael Johnson pulled a muscle on his leg and walk halfway off the track without assistant! If you pull a hamstring or whatever string you pulled you're laying down on the track until someone get your fake ass off the track!

At this level these guys have seen every trick in the book. With everything at stake, legacy, sponsorships, ago, etc, there's a lot on the line and taking a straight up L isn't easy. Bailey knew exactly what happened and called it out. This guy was awesome!
He set the 400m world record two years later. Then won the Olympic gold medal in the 400m 3 years later. Bailey, won silver at worlds later that year and became irrelevant
When you pull a hamstring, it's very difficult to bend the leg. Especially immediately after the injury. MJ squats on the ground with his head down at ease. Both legs in bent positions...
he clearly said his quad, thats the front of the leg, not the hamstring, then you say they are the same...so it red and green the same too? Squatting is the natural way to stretch-out a hamstring ya goof!
@@whatyoudo9773 Same thing as far as a pulled hamstring or a pulled quad makes it impossible to squat down with ease like that. It puts the injured site in a compromised position. It's funny how Donovan was looking back... In his mind he probably was "I thought I was running against someone, where is he?!" On the other note: Sometimes it is better to humble yourself and say to others when they do good or better than you "good job". In life no one is faster or better. Everything is destiny. There is always someone else better at the moment. But nothing is 100% in life. You cannot be better forever, someone else will always take your place no matter what. We all should learn to just thank God for the blessings that we receive because it is a gift to be able to run that fast. Easy to lose it when we boast about them like we never received it at all.
Johnson obviously faked this injury but the runner in the inside lane here has a huge psychological advantage in a race of only 150 meters. Yes, I know it's the same distance, but if you were to chose what lane you wanted in this race, it's the inside lane 100 out of 100 times.
I tend to agree with Baily that 200m isn't "sprinting" in the sense that you don't run your TOP speed at any point. The race is long enough that you need to pace yourself. It's an endurance race.
the 50m curve was not enough for Johnson to fully accelerate, and the little distance for one outside lane in 50m curve made Bailey easily catch Johnson and Johnson was surprised Bailey came much earlier than he had expected.

Pure math. It is because MJ's 200m 19.32 WR was faster than two 100m dashes (19.32s/2 = 9.66s per 100m) so Johnson's WR proved that this is fastest and "true"-est sprint discpline, at that time.
@@soapenvelope true, but it's not an even split. MJs first 100m will be much slower than the second 100m. By that time, Donovan bailly would have been too far ahead - explosive power alliws him to get through the first 100m much quicker than mj
80 m does cause you decelerate at the las 20 meters in 100 m. It is also about speed maintenance and not only about max velocity reached at a t time.
@@michaelwatson7479 100m is more about reaction times and block technique, 200m is more about curve and top speed. In 100m, you can be good at these things and bad runner and still win, so it is less about running. And not all blocks are the same...
@Shay Ogun you can't really compare the two. The 100m world record has always been broken by extremely very small margins usually a tenth to hundredths of a second while the 200m record has been broken in much larger gaps.
The Fakest injury in history 😂
You're a fake bro !!
Johnson it's a very sportive.
Just like that race between him and Maurice Greene lol.
@Weghweh Hwewehwhe
Weirdly enough, Donovan Bailey was horrendous on the 200. Never ran below 20.40 legally
@@MrKarlozzBailey only ran the 200m maybe once a year without really training for it. If he actually specialized in it he most definitely could have ran it in 20 flat to maybe 19.8 with a good start. This race was a bit of a farce bc the fastest man in the world is always the Olympic 100m champ.
🤣🤣🤣
This race shouldn't have happened!
A total mismatch!
Micheal is a true 400m runner.
He had no business running against Donovan period!
Donovan is 100m Sprint specialist!
80% of the 100m specialist would have beaten Michael at 150m!
Anyone who has run the track should have seen and known this!
It was over before it started!
bitch Johnson held the 200 m wold record as well so it was fair match to meet up at 150m
MRJOHNSANO I agree great point
You sound uneducated about track. Johnson ran 19.32 in the 200 meter. Go back and watch that race and you show me how many 100 meter sprinters were in front of him at the 150 mark!
@@HushHush2 That is exactly the point I'm making.
Education much?
@@MRJOHNSANO That's not the point you're making. You're saying just the opposite! How is it 80 percent of 100 meter runners should have beaten him, when he is miles ahead of all the 100 meter runners at 150 in the Olympics. Face it your comment makes no sense! Go edit it!
In boxing terms this was the equivalent of a first round knockout. Bailey dominated Johnson from the gun.
Johnson couldn't stand to lose honestly..he loss and he cried "WOLF"... Bailey was powerfully strong.
Need to see more events like this! Would be great for the sport and for the fans to see events like this!
The Last time I checked the worlds fastest man is determined by the 100 metres point blank and a period.
I wonder of the 60m (albeit indoors) is a better indicator considering when sprinters actually hit their top speed
60 meters is to short of a race. 100 meter to 120 meters is perfect to see whos the fastest @sgu02nsc66
How on God's earth did Michael Johnson's performance not get nominated for an Oscar? Clearly he could have beat Jack Nicholson performance in "As good as it gets" ...lol
He couldn't "standthe truth."
@@berndtherrenvolk1951 lmao 🤣🤣
Interesting seeing the difference in bias and viewpoint from the US and Canadian broadcast of this race, both on RUclips. Really captured each country's opinion of the race.
Donovan Bailey was better than Michael Johnson over 150m. And the main reason was because running 150m; is standard practice for some Olympic level athletes that may need to prepare for 100m dash event.
The same applies to 200m runners who spend half their training trying to average 9.8 or even 9.7 in the first 100 meters 🤷♀️
@@zozochichino one has ever run 9.8 or 9.7 on the bend what do you mean?
Bailey deserved more respect!
Bailey said it best, Johnson’s a coward.
I 2nd that!
He knew that Bailey was going to whip his butt so he faked a cramp he was not man enough to straight up face the loss that was coming, yes Johnson is a coward
Michael Johnson faked this injury, it's obvious. He's like "Oh shit, i'm bout to get smoked...". The ol' pulled muscle trick always works....

Yeah, I think so. Just take the L. Egos get too big.

And there you have a lesson in humility
This is the coolest thing to ever happen in track and field. Special events like this need to happen more often
The concept was good, but it was more anti-climactic than The Last Jedi.
Track and Field needs more of this

Johnson was amazing but he let people get to his head. He even pulled up against Maurice Greene (who pulled up 50m later) in the 2000 Olympic trials.
@@JimboJonas Johnson's a plain and simple wanker. I've been watching him a lot over the years working for the BBC.
For All The World To See
Michael shammed out. He knew he would have been whupped, & he cooked the injury.
Very true
True
Worst than finishing the race the best he could
I also believe that when they got on the straight away Johnson saw Bailey pulling away from him and in my opinion i believe Johnson faked a cramp so he can have an excuse for losing .
He did not. That was no fake.

Michael Johnson "what if he'd have run 10.2 and won the 100m" well Michael he ran it in 9.84 and set the world record.
Brilliant.
Johnson faked he pulled a muscle .Bailey was to much for him
Clever move Michael so you wouldn't clock a historic weak time.
I remember watching this live and I was so disappointed in Johnson. Maybe it was because he didn’t have his golden shoes on. 🤷♂️
This shit is just hilarious! (LOl) obviously Michael Johnson is not a sprinter but he likes to draw attention to himself.
"What a tragic finish, after all of the hype!" @ 18:50 Sums it up about right.
21:27 If that was a real pulled hamstring, he would've been in agony. Instead, he comes to a stop gradually and begins to jog. Never an injury.
Quad not hammy

Watching this again no way Michael Johnson pulled a muscle on his leg and walk halfway off the track without assistant! If you pull a hamstring or whatever string you pulled you're laying down on the track until someone get your fake ass off the track!
I remember this like yesterday. Donovan looked the part coming into the arena. Here's a little history about a guy I know personally from Galveston TX named Derrick Florence. He was the fastest in the nation coming out of high school. He smoked Michael Johnson in college.
I still have those T&F magazines, I know of Derrick Florance, MJ PR leaving was 21.12.
Thanks for the lovely video 🙏
“Explosive start by Johnson, pretty good start by Donovan Bailey”. I’m sorry but these announcers were watching a different race. It was over 30 meters in (hence a strong start)
Tbf, the American media going out of it's way to puff up Johnson is pretty much the only reason this race was a thing in the first place
I remember watching this live and was so disappointed to see MJ whimp out. Come on man, finish the race like a man and take your a$$ whooping. You could see him look at Bailey pulling away and think “dang, this guy is kicking my butt” and then fake a hamstring pull.
Bailey looked to have him well beaten at 50M as he was going away - I dont see Johnson pulling back that deficit had he not been injured.
He was shocked by that power..that is ALL
Michael Lost his race, and people can talk trash about Michael Johnson all they want, but that man ran a 19:32 in the 200M. 19:32!! How many men on this planet can do that!
At this level these guys have seen every trick in the book. With everything at stake, legacy, sponsorships, ago, etc, there's a lot on the line and taking a straight up L isn't easy. Bailey knew exactly what happened and called it out. This guy was awesome!
After that I never heard anything about Micheal Johnson again. Bailey was a beast!!
He set the 400m world record two years later. Then won the Olympic gold medal in the 400m 3 years later. Bailey, won silver at worlds later that year and became irrelevant
thank u so very much for this video!
When you pull a hamstring, it's very difficult to bend the leg. Especially immediately after the injury. MJ squats on the ground with his head down at ease. Both legs in bent positions...
But didn't MJ say he injured a quadricep muscle not a hamstring?
@@TheNYgolfer same thing. You're not going to have the range of motion to complete a full squat pain free at ease like he did
@Brian Walker actually bending the leg stretches out the Quad , but I always thought it was the hamstring he supposedly pulled.
he clearly said his quad, thats the front of the leg, not the hamstring, then you say they are the same...so it red and green the same too? Squatting is the natural way to stretch-out a hamstring ya goof!
@@whatyoudo9773 Same thing as far as a pulled hamstring or a pulled quad makes it impossible to squat down with ease like that. It puts the injured site in a compromised position. If you notice when an athlete endures either a quad or hamstring injury, the first thing the naturally do is straighten the injured leg even if at a full speed sprint
He's not limping after a hamstring injury? Or even a cramp? Fake ass apologize to the people who don't know what happens with muscle injuries!!!

Johnson obviously faked this injury but the runner in the inside lane here has a huge psychological advantage in a race of only 150 meters. Yes, I know it's the same distance, but if you were to chose what lane you wanted in this race, it's the inside lane 100 out of 100 times.

I don't think he pulled nothing and I'm American. Donovan Bailey had him. The thing is Michael didn't want to lose
Johnson "grimaced" cuz Bailey was in the lead after the turn - simple as that!

It was a 75m curve.
No sé cuál es la tanta emoción si fue que a Michael Johnson se le trepó un músculo. Por tanto no es válida la victoria ya que no fue que le ganó en circunstancias normales de Michael Johnson haber llegado a la menta en lucha al lado del otro.
I don't know what the emotion is if it was that Michael Johnson pulled a muscle. Therefore the victory is not valid since it was not that Michael Johnson beat him under normal circumstances to have come to the fore in a fight side by side.

1. He is not an all out sprinter.
2. The person who wins the 100m at the Olympics is crown "the world fastest man".
3. False pride was the reason for Johnson's demise.
4. Even at 150m, Bailey is an all out sprinter, would have destroyed him.
5. Johnson's est chance of beating Bailey was for Bailry to have a pull muscle or s muscle problem.
6. Johnson in my opinion chicken out when he saw Bailey passing him, because he knows there was no way he was going to catch Bsiley.
7. The argument of who is fastest man ag the Olympics was truly settled.
Explosive start from johnson... pretty good start... (wtf is going on)... from... (he's beating him)... Donovan Bailey...
