  • I was recently able to meet up with Oskar (@plantthatplant on Instagram) in Lund, Sweden. Oskar is a well known and respected rare tropical aroid collector, trader, and seller in the European plant scene. In this episode (Part 4), we go plant shopping at Tradsgards Paletten, a prominent garden center in Malmo, Sweden. We discuss what is is considered rare and not rare in US and Europe. Though we are oceans apart and there are definitely some differences, I hope this series highlight that we are much more similar than we may think =)

I just found your channel and I really like it. I used to live in Stockholm, Sweden, and there are a lot of places there too, just like this store in Malmö. I miss some of that here, and the prices are very different. I wouldn't even dream of spending what I spend on plants here in the US in Sweden, I would think it was waaaaay too expensive lol. I've always loved gardening, but more and more these days, that I start to care about just leafy plants, I was more into the showy blooms of orchids previously.

I live in Holland and we are just surrounded by greenhouses haha. Just bought a Peru that size for five dollars in the supermarket today. 40 dollars is insane! This really confirms for me that if we wait, and it won't be very long, the prices in N America will come down considerably as growers produce these plants for our market. It'd be awesome if there was shipping from the EU to N America. I don't know of any companies that do.

How do they sustain all these plants in their shops? Are Swedish consumers buying all those plants or do they export most of these plants throughout the EU? Do you think that we will eventually have similar shops and prices as more independent growers expand or will most growers maintain only an online presence? Costa Farms has started selling Calathea Musaica, ZZ Raven, Monstera Adasonii and Begonia Maculata Wightii in big box stores for $18. I think this is great as more people will have access.
This is so interesting because being from the Northeast my experience is different than yours too so it is like getting multiple perspectives. We grow our BOPs inside.😁

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
