I don’t care for her, and I believe that her inviting Eliza to tea and knowing Duke would show up was her whole intention to rub salt in the flesh of Eliza…so to speak! Just watching her sit across and “cuddle” up was pure ugliness! 😡

Exactly 🎉. I don't usually judge a female characters because a lot of female roles tend to receive more criticism at least in my country, but this Arabella is total "beach". Isgt her facial expressions, ugly competitiveness, dramatic flair of her mannerisms, and her sickeningly and repulsively flirtatious acts with duke make me want to barf as hard as I can. She's certainly underhanded, conniving, and distasteful to the boot

The duke was so wrong for getting into a relationship with her after Eliza told him everything about their past and about he she doesn’t like her…like how tf are you gonna be in love with Eliza and be her friend since you were kids but still end up doing stupid shit like that? This is why I hope Eliza will end up with Patrick instead of William.

Arabella is a well written multi layered character. I started watching the first episode not wanting to like her. As more is revealed about her I stopped judging her and started understanding the why of her and stopped painting her with the B_______ brush. Very crafty character development.

Of course William knew what Arabella was up to with her surprise tea party. He's an accomplished detective and came from the streets for heaven's sake. I don't believe he's that daft. How could he be so hip to Eliza's tricks and not see through this? But William also had incentives for overlooking, dismissing it didn't he?
    1) An ongoing intimate relationship with Arabella
    2) Eliza's torment is also a secondary gain. After S1 and S2 he is certainly aware of Eliza's affection and love for him, but it's not enough for her to bend
to his desires and be someone she can't be. On some level maybe he thinks that Eliza's hurt and jealousy will bring a change of heart in her and bring her into conformity of what he wants. This sounds cruel, but I don't think it's fully conscious or malicious on his part.
William had a merciless upbringing and is a wounded soul. Hurt people hurt people. I think William wants Eliza, but isn't fully aware he loves her in his own wounded way.
It's clear after 3 seasons that William self medicates his pain with whiskey and sex. His character is set. To think that the right woman, a woman he loves can "fix" him is ridiculous, even for a fictional series. This ship has sunk like the Edmund Fitzgerald.
I also didn't buy the jewelry store play acting proposal. William's expression was one of "OK, you want a detailed story Eliza? Well, I have a doozy!" Maybe he wanted to see her response. After all maybe she's the only woman who hasn't swooned over him. I think he misses her and wants some kind of acknowledgement and tries to achieve it the only way he knows how.
I believe William and Eliza were strongly attached during the investigation of Henry Scarlet's death and it's resolution, but that seems to have faded over time. I also think that William and Eliza really do love each other, but at this point I can only see them ending with a loving brotherly/sisterly bond.

I disagree, but only because I think this series is more of a fun mystery with a bit of romance as opposed to a serious and sad-in-the-name-of-realism drama. The creator of the series has said that she was really inspired by Jane Austen's work, which I think really means that it will ultimately be a love story. I think over the course of seasons 1 and 2, Eliza and William realized that they were attracted to each other, but both convinced themselves that it could never work. William is convinced that Eliza will never love anyone or anything more than her career, and Eliza is convinced that William will ultimately ask her to choose between him and her ambition. Neither of them is fully wrong, but neither of them really realize how close they are to making it work- they both just need to bend a little bit in order to find a middle ground, which is something they would need to do a million times over the course of their lives in any sort of relationship. But, again, they are both convinced that the other never will (and they are both too stubborn and afraid to be the first to do it).
Going into season 3, I think William sees in Arabella everything that (he thinks) he wants from Eliza- she is driven and smart and ambitious (really, she shares all of Eliza's best qualities, which is why they would also make such good friends) but she is very willing to make the small sacrifices necessary to make a marriage work. In the end, though, she is a little TOO willing to make sacrifices, and never asks William to make any of his own. With Arabella, it is easy, they never fight- he doesn't have to take any risks or change anything about his life, or push himself to be a better version of himself. And for a while, he convinces himself that that is exactly what he wants. And I think that's the reason for the devastated look on his face at the end of season 3- he already knew that he loved Eliza, but he thought he thought he could get over it and have the life he always thought he wanted- a smart but submissive wife who he can have a conversation with but who won't challenge him. But in the end, not only did he lie to himself, he also misjudged Arabella- it turns out, she is not docile and agreeable enough to be with a man so clearly in love with someone else (and we love that for her!). Now that the illusion is shattered, he is doomed to either be alone forever or find a way to make it work with Eliza. Either way, in his mind, he will never have the family he's always wanted.
On Eliza's side, she believes that any man (including William) will ultimately force her to choose between having a family and having her career (I don't think she's fully wrong here, either, I think season 1 William would 100% have been arrogant enough to just assume that if and when they got together she would just volunteer to give up her career. like, he wouldn't have forced her, but they would have had a huge, relationship-ending fight about it). In her ideal world, she would have both, but she doesn't really see that as a possibility.
They are both proud and stubborn, but the biggest problem is that they don't fully trust each other. Eliza doesn't trust that William will be an equal partner and share enough of the emotional (and psychological) labor of having both a family and a career. And William doesn't trust that Eliza will be able to make compromises or put him (and their relationship) first sometimes. They are both operating at an all-or-nothing level right now, thinking that in order to have a relationship one person has to win and the other has to lose, making assumptions about what the other is thinking and feeling without actually talking, etc etc. but I think once one of them has the courage to tell the other how they really feel and they have a frank and honest conversation about their hopes and fears, they will realize that they can find a compromise. It certainly won't be easy all the time, and they will always have their bickering banter, but I think they could make it work.
(also, speaking of Jane Austen, and to your brother/sister point- they definitely have Emma and Mr. Knightly vibes and I think the next season will have flavors of that in it.)

@@katiehicks3535 I beg to differ with your opinion, but I do appreciate your point of view. If this series was meant to be a fun mystery with a bit of romance instead of a sad and serious drama, then the writers failed to get that memo for season 3. The whole season 3 Arabella storyline as an impediment to Wm. and Eliza's relationship development was too clever by half IMO. The whole season devolved into a maudlin soap opera with the cases/mysteries almost taking a back seat. This also went a long way to damaging the character of William. Gone was the charm, wit, humor, and passionate sparring between Wm. and Eliza that everyone loved to be replaced by mostly somber exchanges between the two. The meager humor was now between Fitzroy and William. It's a shame because the Duke is a great character played by wonderful actor and I felt deserved a better character arc.
Rachel New has said in a previous interview that it would be very, very unlikely that (Eliza) would continue working as a married woman. It would be so frowned upon socially for a professional man to be married to a working woman. It would be very strange for anyone to get their head around.
And married Eliza would have to be to have any kind of close, intimate relationship with William. So where would the compromise come? And what would be the point of confessing their feelings if it goes nowhere and they remain a platonic couple? I could be wrong, but I suspect the Arabella story line will be dropped like a hot potato in S4. No discussion, resolution, or apologies for hurting Eliza like it never happened.
I think Eliza and William are closely bonded by their love and respect for Henry Scarlet. They are each other's last connection/touchstone to him, but their values and life goals are incompatible. It's clear they love each other and when push comes to shove they are 'ride or die' for each other, but I don't see this developing into a romance. I'm willing to keep an open mind though, suspend my disbelief, and see where the writers take us.

So grateful the fandom will be getting a Season 4. In my head, this is my fan wish for next season -- Eliza becomes the Belle of the Ball with a flourishing private eye business with her dance card being filled. I would like for Eliza to be pursued by two romantic rivals (fantasy casting of the sensual and smouldering Ben Barnes and Aidan Turner). William, although in total denial about his feelings, has moved on and so should Eliza. Turnaround is fair play.😜😆💋❤️💯
Looking forward to the season finale this Sunday!!

After Arabella finished shaming Eliza about her tattered childhood clothing (in front of who she thought was her husband) and left the table William stated, "Well she seemed perfectly charming."
Poor William, always on the hunt, keeping his options open....must be exhausting.

I disagree. He sensed Eliza's insecurity and pain and exploited it. William needed power over her and a serious ego boast to match against her. That's what Eliza was afraid of when it comes to William at the end of S2. That's what I felt was her reason in keeping her feelings in check and not expressing her thoughts of his leave for Glasgow.
William was bowled over by a woman of the community with her very fine restaurant, her charity, her wardrobe. Gee, who knew William was such a social climber. He'd climb over Eliza to get himself some status symbol, societal clout that he can benefit from with the guys at SY.
