Why do you need brakes your not going fast you left off the throttle and put your foot down. The motor this uses is the same motor that they use on the electric scooters you can buy in a store for a couple hundred bucks it'll do about 5 to 7 miles an hour

Hello, I was wondering what are the Ah of the batteries you used, I am trying to build a scooter for myself but am having trouble finding the correct batteries
Build a lithium battery pack out of recycled 18650's
I believe that they are 7Ah batteries
Skateboard grip tape would be a nice addition. Nice build!

Nice tidy efficient work. Electric scooters here cost £1000's. Need to get welder & grinder. I like those thread making drill bits you used.. must get some. Thought you might have needed waterproof protection underneath to prevent rain splashing into the electrics. Insects too.
Like to give this a whirl, got many parts & tools. Steel plate..? expensive! maybe aluminum. Got some motors, but trying out different configurations to cancel back emf, even use back emf to double the torque, even at low speeds. A drum motor attached to the back wheel is another option maybe. Am building a pure sine wave inverter, hopefully build a voltage-frequency motor controller using the 555 timer & an attenuator wave shaping circuit to get close to pure sine wave. Maybe you could rig up a dynamo-battery charger to recharge the batteries as you go. I built a small disc with magnets on it, connected to a motor, powering a light bulb one time. No batteries needed, just held another magnet close by & it went whizzing round to power the light bulb at 9v dc.

Where are the breaks
You can add bicycle breaks and depending on the speed controller it can get back some of the energy turning momentum into electricity and charge batteries back. Of course this conversion loses energy, but max operating distance increases.
