      A lot of it was bought, sold and traded with the British. Some of it discovered in archaeological digs. It is rare something was just 'looted' and stolen. For example, a lot of the Greek artefacts were sold to Britain by the Ottoman Empire in the 1800s, to avoid their destruction. Today Greece says they are 'stolen', because they were ruled by the Ottomans at the time.
      The Indian Koh-i-Noor Diamond which is a popular item Indians claimed was stolen/looted, was investigated and in 2016 the Indian supreme ruled court that the Koh-i-Noor had been given freely to the British in the mid-19th century by Maharajah Ranjit Singh, and was “neither stolen nor forcibly taken by British rulers.
      There are many items around the world owned by collectors of different origins to the items. The British Museum just have the largest collection since it fascinated them long before most countries started opening museums themselves. Many items have been saved from destruction.

      The Rosetta Stone, for instance. Should we "hand it back" to the Arab "Egyptians"; even though it had lain there (as a piece of building rubble in one of their palaces), unnoticed? Did the Arabs even care about trying to decipher the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, through the CENTURIES in which they ruled Egypt?

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 5 лет назад +6

      Kausik J,
      You have just repeated the stupid error made by nearly every article and You Tube video from India about the Kohinoor Diamond.
      They ALL, as in EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE, show the Queen wearing the Imperial State Crown.
      That crown DOES have a large diamond, bigger, in fact, than the Kohinoor. It is Cullinan II, the Second Star of Africa.
      The Kohinoor Diamond is not in the crown that they keep showing. It is in the crown of the Queen Consort.
      If you find a balcony photo f the Coronation of George VI, then His Queen is wearing the Kohinoor Diamond. You can see in this photo that the diamond that is in the Imperial State Crown is much bigger, and rectangular, nor round.
      The Queen has never worn the crown that holds the Kohinoor Diamond. It made its last public appearance in 2001 when it rested on top of the casket of the Queen Mother, at her funeral.
      The next person to wear it will be either Camilla or Catherine, on the day of their husband's Coronation.
      Saying that they could not afford to buy a diamond for the Queen's crown is really rather ridiculous. They COULD, but usually don't. Diamonds like the Kohinoor are given to them.
      The reason that the Kohinoor was given to Victoria was because by that date she held the title "Empress of India", so in a sense, the Diamond was still in the hands of the Indian ruler.
      It could have been retrned at the time of the partition, but then it would simply have become another bone of contention between India and Pakistan who both claim it. So does Iran, and so does Russia.
      It is probably better if it remains at the Tower of London, where Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians and Russians can all come and look at it.

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 5 лет назад +4

      Shivam Sharma,
      can I suggest that you look up recent lootings of treasures from India's temples.
      It goes on all the time, and it is Indians who are responsible for it.
      Several museums have recently returned treasures which they bought, fully certified, at auction, in recent years.
      The theft is an ongoing problem as more and more ruthless people see religious artefacts as a source of money.
      Dealing with this problem is far more significant than complaining about artefacts that the British Museum acquired during the 19th century.
      With the Museum objects, there whereabouts is known, they are maintained and displayed, free of charge, to the World.
      This is a very different problem to the destruction of objcts for thei metal and jewels, and he disappearance of artworks into private collections where they may not be seen for years.

      Beholding the greatest material objects of different regions throughout history is not looking at mere physical objects, but the intellects, religion and even science of the time in question. The paucity of curiosity displayed by your words is tragedy enough.
      Perhaps you're very young. Perhaps you were raised to appreciate very little in the world in general. Yet to only see pitiable beggars when you gaze upon those interested in history is an opposite view of what is really in the reflecting glass. Here's hoping you may be brought to appreciate what was grand, what was awful, what was brilliant from times past, for without the measuring stick of history, it's impossible to tell where we're even going.

      Elgin removed them, in spite of the opposition of the Greeks, promising to return them when Greece would have become a safer place...but instead few years later he sold them to the British museum. Given that the removal was authorized by the Turks, the British museum considers the purchase legitimate.

    "From 1801 to 1812, agents of Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon, as well as sculptures from the Propylaea and Erechtheum. The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain. Elgin later claimed to have obtained in 1801 an official decree (a firman) from the Sublime Porte, the central government of the Ottoman Empire which were then the rulers of Greece. This firman has not been found in the Ottoman archives despite its wealth of documents from the same period and its veracity is disputed. "

      Many of these objects were also looted by people within the countries of origin. But no matter who took them, they were often spirited away across several borders and then purchased by a series of private collectors. Those individuals later sold them to museums for vast sums, maintaining that the objects were legally acquired. This makes it difficult to pinpoint the true origins of artifacts or the validity of claims to ownership. Where they are now is probably best, they are well looked after and protected, and restored to their original beauty when absolutely necessary. Besides, it's not like any money is being made from it, and people still get to learn basic history without having to pay for it. The museum was dedicated to human culture, not specifically British culture, so please don't jump to that conclusion.

      True, no-one doubts that, but Italy used to own Libya and Abbysinia (Ethiopia) - did it not kill tribesmen/anyone during those times as well as join the Axis? So you have had a colonial past as well as the Brits???? Who the hell was the Roman Empire? You have the Obelisk from Egypt in Rome???? Stolen???? The same way as many Brits have NOTHING to do with OUR colonial past?? And who the hell did the Romans LEARN from ?? Greek Colonists? The Etruscans who had Greek influences? So you're full of shit, that even 'Italy' isn't totally a unique country.

    If the Assyria artifacts had been left or returned to their place of origin they would likely have been destroyed in the last few years by extremists. I get the whole "theft" issue but some of this priceless history would not have survived if not kept here. I have a friend of Assyria descent who is grateful for every piece of their history preserved by the museum. It's complicated....

    So much irrational hatred in the comment section. Many of these treasures originally belonged to brutal kings and the idle rich. Originally, these treasures never belonged to "the people." The British Museum on the other hand offers these treasures to the public. So it's a little irrational to "return" them to the current government of the land of their origin.

      What I recommend is that the people who like whinging, get in there an do something to protect those treasures that they do have in their possession.
