The British Museum obtained them legally, you would know this if you actually did some research first. Lets not even get into the fact that the Parthenon had literally been used to store explosive material (which had gone off) before they were removed (with permission) and later bought by the museum.
Elgin removed them, in spite of the opposition of the Greeks, promising to return them when Greece would have become a safer place...but instead few years later he sold them to the British museum. Given that the removal was authorized by the Turks, the British museum considers the purchase legitimate. It was a theft, the museum was always aware of it. Elgin was in bad faith. The marble of the Parthenon should be returned to Greece.
I hope one day I can visit the British museum. I really want to move my family to Europe in a few years but I for certain want to visit and travel across Europe. It would be a great adventure.
Artefacts kept in complete safety(uk not invaded for 1000 years) carefully preserved (not left laying around deteriorating) and displayed completely free for the world curtesy of the British tax payer (unlike the high prices of most museums who prevent those without the funds from visiting). To deal with the negative comments about items being “stolen”, it is a fact that without them being recovered and preserved by the British the majority of them wouldn’t exist now and be lost to the world.

The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain. Elgin later claimed to have obtained in 1801 an official decree (a firman) from the Sublime Porte, the central government of the Ottoman Empire which were then the rulers of Greece. This firman has not been found in the Ottoman archives despite its wealth of documents from the same period and its veracity is disputed. "

Many of these objects were also looted by people within the countries of origin. But no matter who took them, they were often spirited away across several borders and then purchased by a series of private collectors. Those individuals later sold them to museums for vast sums, maintaining that the objects were legally acquired. This makes it difficult to pinpoint the true origins of artifacts or the validity of claims to ownership. Where they are now is probably best, they are well looked after and protected, and restored to their original beauty when absolutely necessary. Besides, it's not like any money is being made from it, and people still get to learn basic history without having to pay for it. The museum was dedicated to human culture, not specifically British culture, so please don't jump to that conclusion.

So much irrational hatred in the comment section. Many of these treasures originally belonged to brutal kings and the idle rich. Originally, these treasures never belonged to "the people." There's nothing "British" in the British Museum.
You should visit the Victoria and Albert Museum
Except for the knowledge understanding and skill behind finding and researching said exhibits, not to mention the expertise behind maintaining them in an environment of minimum degredation and/or reversing any damage already sustained. Then again. there's always the accumulated value of the invested running expenses of the storage environment along with the availability of expert assistance to any visiting researchers who need access in order to increase humanity's understanding.
Abstract scientific knowledge mostly lacks an ownership label, in fact the only location with any relevance is the destination of the bills for the overheads involved.
@@So1ipse Yes, the British Museum has provided a legacy for the treasures for others to study and view them. This is the other side of the coin; they didn't just pillage these artifacts and melt them down or sell them on. It bears a great responsibility to do this properly and is an expensive business.
Why these people like to live in other people shadow,
It's difficult to imagine a concept of history as limited as this. (It almost sounds like a vacuous thing that Donald Trump would say.)
Beholding the greatest material objects of different regions throughout history is not looking at mere physical objects, but the intellects, religion and even science of the time in question. The paucity of curiosity displayed by your words is tragedy enough.
Perhaps you're very young. Perhaps you were raised to appreciate very little in the world in general. Yet to only see pitiable beggars when you gaze upon those interested in history is an opposite view of what is really in the reflecting glass. Here's hoping you may be brought to appreciate what was grand, what was awful, what was brilliant from times past, for without the measuring stick of history, it's impossible to tell where we're even going.

The British Museum obtained them legally, you would know this if you actually did some research first. Lets not even get into the fact that the Parthenon had literally been used to store explosive material (which had gone off) before they were removed (with permission) and later bought by the museum.
Many of the objects were obtained in fair trade, or barter, for sugar, molasses, spice, clocks, whale oil, fabric, or other commodities in demand.

Elgin Marbles were removed with the permission of the Ottomans, not the Greeks.
I tottaly agree with you and we better call them Parthenon's Marbles and not Elgin Marbles.
It’s great the are together. Otherwise, they would have been sold piece by piece for placement in gardens around the world.

Sad but true.

There is a mistake. Greeks never gave the permission to Elgin removing the marbles.
"From 1801 to 1812, agents of Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon, as well as sculptures from the Propylaea and Erechtheum. "

Yep it is a museum of the world in britain, you are very clever to have discovered that, you must have looked at the first page of their website or something.
That is ultimately true, Salvatore, but I'm sure your country was a colonialist country too.
Ps Middx my country is Italy and as you might know Italy has the Most UNESCO World Heritage Sites opn this Planet. www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-the-most-unesco-world-heritage-sites.html

The same way as many Brits have NOTHING to do with OUR colonial past?? And who the hell did the Romans LEARN from ?? Greek Colonists? The Etruscans who had Greek influences?
