- In Sailor Moon English episode 50, "Lita" argues that her "talent" makes her the perfect actress to play Snow White in the school play. However, in the original Japanese episode 56, Makoto explains the REAL reason she should get the part.

And Rei is looking at her “talent” and blushing. Makes sense in the Japanese dub, but in the English dub, it just makes that whole bit even gayer.

Seeing the subtitled version after all these years is like watching it for the first time, again. Getting the Viz DVDs was a lot of fun.

When you think these girls are just 14 - 15, the joke on Jupiter's chest is even more awkward. I think whoever played Mina sounds most like her original Japanese counterpart.

The funny thing is that aside from the "talent" line, this was actually one of the more faithfully dubbed episodes in the DIC run.

I'm been rewatching Sailor Moon (the first time I watched was the Portuguese version when I was tiny) and I swear I couldn't remember watching this scene as it is at all... Turns out it was also censored in our version as well. But the 'boing' sound was there!
Viz actors sound insanely bored, and keeps the japanese sub script. DiC owned it all with their censorship of those inappropriate sexual remarks, and their own dialogue pwns all bad fandub viz and Japanese. I've seen parrots at petting zoos with more voice acting oomph than those talented biz voice actors.

When I first saw this, it was obvious to me what "talent" was Lita/ Makoto about. But she was my favorite character because she was "talented".
That dub wasn't all bad. I like how they had Ann saying "Ratzafratz!" when she missed her chance to kiss Darien; Sammy saying "Hey, the ham belongs in the fridge!" as Serena read her lines; and the clown monster saying "First I'll bring down the house!" when he wrecked the set.
Seriously, I can see Lita as the Queen since she's tall and rather pushy...
While I prefer the subtitled version overall, some of the lines the dubbed version added were good ones! I've just been watching it subbed and noticed that some linesI liked hadn't been in that version.
Like in the episode where the family visits the hot springs and Dad gets uptight on finding out that Serena's pendant comes from a boy. The dubbers added the bit where Mom says "Relax, dear, she probably got it from Melvin," and Dad says "Melvin--now there's a boy for you!"
Or the episode where Malachite gets the letter from Sailor Moon offering to defect and comments on her terrible spelling. (Japanese writing isn't alphabetic.)
And I also liked when Amy (I think) saw the monster and said, "Maybe it's the seventh dwarf"!
Yeah I'll defend the original DiC dub till the day I die! While it's definitely got its flaws, in the context of when it came out, it did it's job outstandingly well. I think people seem to forget that Sailor Moon was one of the first western localisations of an anime that had already taken the rest of the world by storm, so before the rights had even been bought, there was huuuuuge expectations on whichever company ended up having possession of the IP to deliver it in a way that would be mass-marketable AND palatable to the, at the time, heavily scrutinised market of children's media. Given all the many expectations looming over them from all sides, especially considering the fact that Anime had yet to prove itself as having such mass market appeal in the western market, I think it's reasonable that ANY company who ended up with this potential time bomb would crack under the pressure in some way or another! They did do so many things right with this dub and honestly I think after the most recent re-dubs, people have started to appreciate the highlights of the originals a bit more :)

This is such an amusing re-working of the original Japanese dialogue. Yes, it isn't a very good translation, but it is pretty funny!
What’s crazy is in real life women totally do compare the size of their assets and it’s kind of amazing that the real anime totally captured that. Lol

And you can clearly tell even if you don't know the language since most expressions are the same in every language like laughing, screaming and crying everyone can understand those with out needing to understand the language.
To settle the argument who is suitable to play Snow White:
Personality wise = Ami
Appearance wise = Hotaru
Age wise = Chibiusa (since Snow White was originally seven years old).

For the record, that "boing" sound effect you hear in the DiC dub was, in actual fact, used in the Japanese audio as well (though the Japanese audio track had BGM playing).
I never heard that boing sound effect in dic only viz and Japanese.

I always thought she looked the most like snow white, (mostly going off the disney version) because she had short dark hair. Next would be Rei who also had dark hair, even darker than Ami's and would contrast against her skin to make her look paler.

Snow White according to general Snow White characteristics the one who should play Snow White should have short black hair. The only one could be suitable to the character is Hotaru.

I could tell she was meant to be talking about her chest just the way Mars looked at her when she brought it up again with that on purpose in her face scene. The Japanese version make me tear up and cry in laughter. I’m sorry for those who watched the English dub first instead of the original Japanese... they missed out on so much character...
That was common back then before the internet made it easy to get access to the original, which could be quite difficult if not impossible outside of a few big cities and specialty stores.
Sailor Moon actually isn't even that extreme, the first 3 Macross series were edited into one long series called Robotech in the US to meet syndication requirements for 65 episodes. One of them takes place on another planet with 2 moons so the dub had to photoshop them out in all those episodes to make it work.

I thought the boing was the sweat drop on Raye/Rei forming since those have sound effects in many anime.

Considering the American market at the time, I think the English translation is not as bad as is pointed out. Two sexualized lines were changed.
Considering the demographic that this show was marketed to... I would have made the same change then.
Now that the Sailor Moon demographic is mature, I would keep every line the same.
What I find to be the funniest aspect of the dub is that a few episodes prior, we see Rei is the acting idol at her school, so "Lita's" own argument is flawed right there.
Also, why didn't ANY version point out the glaringly-obvious fact that she's the tallest, so having her as a dwarf makes no sense?
