The sheer range of costumes for each of the characters is crazy when you consider how costly that gets in animation. I think that helps make Sailor Moon more timeless though and feel grounded because they have multiple outfits and not a Doug Funny closet.

As a huge anime/video game nerd with no fashion sense, thank you for making these videos!! ToT Your ability to describe a character's lifestyle just through their clothing is so insightful, and fun to watch. :) If you're thinking of another series for fashion analysis, I recommend NANA!

Great video- I'm really glad you pointed out the genfluidity in the fashion of all of the SG, because that was a big part of what hit for me when I was younger and started watching the show. Even the much more "girly" characters like Usagi regularly have some really diverse ranges of clothes, in the best possible way. Also, big agreement on Mars's style- she's got a really "professional" vibe and look that reminds me a lot of Lisa Lisa.
Uranus and Pluto definitely have some incredible style- I'd love another video filling out the section on the outer Guardians in the same way you did with the inners, because I think they have some incredible looks and styles that really deserve more talk. But Uranus's versatility and Pluto's raw charisma and mystery I think are really apparent to anyone who watches the show, and even more apparent in the manga where they get a little more time to shine.
Also, that Usagi outfit you wear for the video is cute as heck, great job there. And don't worry if you aren't constantly posting videos- I know RUclips really wants creators to do that, but I'd rather you make one good video a month that you are happy with rather than try and burn yourself out spamming videos every week.

    • @XDF

Glad you agree on the points - as well as appreciate the gender Fluidity piece. Oluto and Uranus are my absolute favs - we'll see what kind of inspo I get for a longer vid at some point.
And love the vid cadence suggestion - I def want to do 1/month at the least - anything more frequent can be a treat then 😊

It's such a nice bonus when characters are shown in different daily outfits--shoutout to Takeuchi and the animation staff for going the extra mile. I appreciate the research you do in your videos as well, and it's fun to see what outfits/styles you highlight--was glad you spent a lot of time on Mako! Hotaru has got some killer outfits (and blunt banged bobcut is OP).
Fun, well done vid. And since I see everyone is throwing out recommendations, I think you might really enjoy Onisaama E/Dear Brother. Great art style, beautiful soundtrack, fun melodrama (with some very serious themes mixed in). It also does a good job of showing characters in different outfits. The style is a little more reserved than Sailor Moon, but I love it!

I get a lot of mature vibes from Sailor Jupiter, she wears the most fitted and feminine clothes, particularly long skirts and turtlenecks which is interesting for a character who is meant to be a tomboy, it really shows that a girl can be sporty and active and still take pride in her body and her curves.
Venus looks the preppiest to me, she's young and perky and she likes to show it with short flowy skirts, cutesy shorts and lots of print.
Mercury strikes me as a rich catholic school girl, she seems more demure and her outfits are definitely more put together, she seems fond of full ensembles that coordinate the bottom with the top and definitely wears the least fitted clothes of the group.
Mars is hard to pin down, sometimes she gives me young sexy lady with those full body short dresses or fitted pants and 3/4 sleeve combos combined with fancy jackets and thin belts and sometimes she gives me three year old girl with the baggy, loud overalls and the oversized ties and hats.
Sailor Moon I feel is probably the most realistic given the age of the girls, her style screams "I wear what my mom bought for me!", very cutesy, very girly, not a lot of thought put on color or pattern coordination.

Great video! I don't consider myself to be that into fashion but whenever I see one of your videos I feel a little inspired to play around with the outfits more (as much as my black skinny jeans, studded belts, and band tees allow for, anyways, lol). That being said I think a fun series to check out could be Tekken. The latest release has a lot of he characters dressed up really fashionably, and in a "this is actually a cool IRL outfit" kind of fashionable and not a "this is a cool anime character" kind of fashionable. Especially with some of the characters' alternate outfits. Anyways, good video as always :]

Top shelf content! It's been a while, and YYH does have some decent drip for what is mainly a shonen. As for some suggestions, I'll do one anime, one game:
    - League of Legends. They have a boatload of characters (let alone skins taking inspiration from quite a few sources), but even sticking to default skins for a handful of champions lead to a fun time. Ionia alone is oh so colorful.
    - One Piece, a bit of a similar case as League but by the gods can they dress. From the nefarious charm of Doflamingo to the array of outfits the lovely Nico Robin has, we see quite a feast when it comes to the attires used by one of the members of the Holy Shonen Trinity.

One anime I think you would enjoy is SuperGALS. It's a slice of life dramedy anime about a group of teenage girls living the Kogal life in Shibuya and its absolutely dripping in 2000's fashion and style from its head to its toes, especially out of the main character Ran Kotobuki.

@@fmadivaColorism? You mean the Tan Trio? They were pastiches of the Ganguro Kogal style, which was to tan dark and then wear white makeup and bright colors to create a color contrast. It doesn't age well, but it's not colorism.

Revisiting this video, I think is your deepest analysis of fashion in your anime videos. Considering the source, we get ton of information and pictures of the outfits. Thinking in the animes I saw, is very hard to remember an anime with such amount of outfits for their characters. Is incredible how prolific was the mangaka during in this aspect.

  • @ETPlayground

"I picture it as a children's variety show."
Yeah, that's the root of a lot of the minor issues I had with the anime; especially after reading the manga. Hyper exaggerating whatever one trait Takeuchi wrote into their verisons of each senshi, not letting them mature from story to story, and their allowing their vision overrule the IP creator's at any turn with things like making Tuxedo Mask to be not liked, disgusting upskirt shots, and getting rid of the mask on Sailor Moon to focus on her big eyes in every frame instead. I think that the original would have been perfect if it had been a middle ground of what we got and what she wanted. And I truly believe thay there would be more stories if she hadn't been burned by the industry. I haven't consumed a Sailor Moon version I don't like yet, just like I don't consider any version to be the perfect or definitive version (obviously there's an original, not denying that). Each version has flaws; most of Takeuchi's characterization didn't make it to the panel for a lot of the senshi and an infamously rushed production schedule that I presume is responsible for that, PGSM has Sailor Luna, and Crystal along with its sequel films feels like the wasted opportunity to do the aforementioned middle ground for the senshi.

    • @XDF
      @XDF  4 месяца назад

Wow - thanks for the thorough breakdown. I was not aware of a lot of that. Given your added context - I would be very eager to see a more mature version of sailor moon, where we get to see how the ladies have evolved in both character and style.
I feel like a lot of childhood shows have done - but none of which have as strong of fashion as Sailor Moon. and maybe with how the industry has evolved since the 90s, I'd be curious if a mature rendition could better embody some of Takeuchi's original vision.
