- Hi all and as always, thanks for coming back. If you're new, then welcome. This is a special episode, one I'm a bit proud of. It's the first bike-packing trip of the year, `nd the first on this channel. I also really enjoyed editing this one, so I hope you enjoy it. I'll premiere this one and be online for the chat, so if you have any questions or just want to chat then get on board :)
This was an epic journey, a fairly typical bike packing trip and buy that I mean a dream come true. It did not go perfectly, but that makes it more interesting right!?

It really makes you appreciate how amazing the uk is. Stunning views, Magnificent mountains and valleys and a cyclist who likes to share his journeys. Love it.
yeah we are lucky, it feels a smaller country the further you go on a bike, its surprising how much you can see
what a legend the chap who offered you somewhere to eat your head.
great film. - cant wait for part 2.
Yeah proper nice guy :) I needed that, sadly I couldn’t accept that in my races that is frowned upon 🤣
Great video Andy, can't wait for the second one. 🚴🚴🚴
thanks mate :)
mate what an awesome ride from Pompey out to that road! great sunset descent and what a top bloke sorting you out at night - stuck through to the end, great vlog and ride, nice one!
Thankyou mate it was so good, a proper adventure:)
Hi Andy, Great to follow you along. Re the Two Tunnel Greenway closure, according to their website the Devonshire tunnel's water level was rising to a point where Sustrans closed it for safety reasons. They have put a suggested diversion on the site which looked a bit convoluted but it would get past it plus a further suggestion for cyclists. Posted for info of anyone else going that way for the foreseeable.
Thanks for checking that out :)
Feeling unwell and pushing on like that, strong effort indeed.
Amazing how some good fortune turns a ride around. Well done. Looking forward to part 2
Thankyou bud it was definitely worth persevering 😁
Andy, what an amazing performance again, and even though it doesn`t feel like, the spring is coming;- We can see it, these awesome landscapes changed from grey to green! Great effort to climb that hill after 250km, impressing af. Thanks for sharing, thanks for delivering exactly what I expected after two weeks of travelling and working hard,- my weekend starts now, tomorrow goin`for an easy 100km, no time for more, Monday is already ahead!
Thankyou mate! It was an epic ride! Sounds like you’re busy?? Have a good ride tomorrow 😁
@@andycultracycling Yes I am, but only one more week to go,- even though the travelling is nice I can`t wait to get on the bike again daily... damn cold and windy today, still had a good time, see You!
Wow what an awesome ride
Thankyou mate it was pretty fun
Amazing ride! Looking forward to part 2. I may have to redefine myself as a short distance endurance rider too 😂
nah there's always a bigger fish, I'd have to do the same depending on who I start watching :) just keep challenging yourself that's all you can do right?
enjoy following tour adventures, great ride, absolute beast doing 300km with a stomach bug 💪👍
thanks mate it was a bit of a challenge haha
Great effort, great video, inspiring for many I'm sure! I'm not that bat crap crazy, but keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks mate :) it was a lot of fun
What mega ride, really enjoyed the video. Really looking forward to the next one. Nice one. 💪🏻😎👍🏻
Thankyou bud 😁
Incredible ride, one of my favourite rides was through Wales, From Shrewsbury across to Llanidloes and then down to Cardiff. Sadly that was a fair few years and kg ago, been back cycling again recently though and aiming to do a 200km this year, managed my first ride over 100km a few weeks ago so hopefully will be able to manage a 200km when the weather is all nice. These videos help remind me what I want to get back to being able to do.
Sounds like a good ride :) thanks for watching the vids too
Impressive ride Andy. Looks great
It was a good one, I was really happy with that ride
Top work again - getting really interesting with longer rides and overnights. Not that your other videos weren't interesting they were all really good, you know what I mean, it's the adventure :) You were one of my inspirations for making a video of on of my (far less impressive) rides. looking forward to part 2. And could you turn those flashing coloured lights off for the night!!?
no they were on all night but to be honest I was so wrapped up I couldn't see them :) how did you find making the video?
@@andycultracycling I work in film-making so usually behind the camera and in a more professional environment. Ive done some in the past but never shared - so first RUclips was a new step. To be honest it was fun if a bit painstaking with the insta360 workflow. But I'm not at the point of talking to camera or riding ahead to place camera and cycle it again to get extra footage! But let's see, if anyone actually watches it I might do some more, but I think you really need a personal engagement which isn't my thing. You're a natural :)
You’re a beast sir. Great video
thanks buddy
Impressive Andy !....especially with stomach issues !!
If you buy the Fizik R4 Arctic [fleece lined] shoes you won't need overshoes again 😃
Rode 104 miles last Sunday [6968 feet elevation] - doing another 100 this Sunday.....not at your level though 😉
Thanks mate! I just brought the overshoes for those colder points, its a dodgy crossover time in the weather right now
Finally got around to watching part 1, and I'm looking forward to part 2. The things which lead me to do ultracycling are the adventure, on-the-fly troubleshooting (e.g. rerouting, dealing with mechanicals), and the solitude -- all accomplished using my own fitness. It's so rewarding. Even the toughest of rides, with some of the worst luck, leave me feeling grateful afterwards.
Thanks for watching mate 😁 while I do agree with you, I do just want an easy life 🤣
A really great video Andy, thanks for setting up the live premiere! I am looking forward to part 2!
Thanks for joining bud, was weird to watch with an audience 🤣
love the first video Andy, hope the stomach bug clears, looking forward to the ride home, and always have faith in the British public, :).
I do mostly but sometimes surprises you how much people want to help, it’s nice
Amazing!
Thanks it was a great trip 😁
I know this route well, I rid from Fareham to hay on Wye a couple of times a year for family visits. Really beautiful route, normally have a great average speed until the bridge, then the hills are a killer.
It is a great route though, do you also do gospel pass? I loved that
300km with the shits, you absolute animal! I do not know how you do it man. Looking forward to part 2, I like the saying ride long enough and the road will provide - I bet that gives hope when you feel a bit down! Well done on this huge effort Andy.
Thanks bud, I love that saying, that said when you wanted fish and chips and the road provides a stale sandwich too have to have a sense of humour!
That was absolutely awesome to watch Andy. Brecons is a beautiful place and there’s nothing better than views after some tough climbs. And Simeone, what a top guy 👍👍. Inspirational video, can’t wait for the 2nd part to this. ( Hope the bug has now “bug”ered off 😉).
It was really cool, the Brecon Beacons was worth the effort!
When you mentioned headwind and then Gospel Pass I thought oh F, because I've done it in a full on gale and because it's so exposed you literally have to fight your way up there. The initial steep ramp is ridiculous, I remember paperboying my way up that and then just putting my head down and fighting to the top. But boy oh boy what a view you have, on a clear day it is a sensational view across Herefordshire and Powys. Well done, must have been even tougher will your ailments. Looking forward to Part Deux.
Good saying that, 'The road will provide'.
It’s a really cool destination, I’d love to live closer, I can see that being a nightmare in bad weather, it was bad enough in less than perfect weather!
Amazing ride well done
thanks mate :)
Can’t wait!
See you there mate
I'm enjoying your adventures! Inspirational for my Panceltic training.Look forward to part 2😎
Hey, I'm glad :)
Impressive. Great effort. 👍 I have great sympathy around bad guts. I had them in Mallorca a few weeks ago. Wrecked my week. 😩
it definitely puts a dampener on events haha
Hi Andy, i have been watching and subscibed a couple weeks ago absolutely love your content 👍🏼 keep up the great work!! and look fwd to more content from you 🙏🏼 thanks!!
Hey, thanks for joining bud, glad you enjoy :)
Amazing, i wondered how the wind would be for you at the start of the video because here in Bournemouth it's been insane and great for kom hunting. The best part of ultra cycling for me is just riding in random places you've never been, that was the best part of my 400km to York last month from Bournemouth
yeah I agree with you on random places, was the wind behind you to York? That would be ideal
@@andycultracycling oh yeah we had a massive tailwind nearly all day but that did cause a few massive rain clouds to follow us
Fantastic video and great effort. Wales is awesome..!!
totally agree it was worth the effort :)
Looks attritional. Kudos for keeping filming.
It definitely was mate
Well done
thanks :)
Did Gospel a few weeks back for the Black Rat, amazing climb, the kick up to the end is tough, the cattle grid doesnt help eh?! :D
It definitely did not 🤣
I rode up out of Hay on Saturday but took the easier pass. That new road surface near the top has been done this year as you needed a mountain bike to ride it before 😊
Ah really, the far side wasn’t great, I was glad to be going the way down into hay, I wouldn’t want to descend the other way
Awesome vid & only half way through 😊 Be good to understand how you plan your nutrition/food & what you use whilst on your rides (unless you’ve already covered this in an earlier vid).
Hey, I don’t think I really have actually, I should do that. Spoiler alert though, it’s just real carby sugary food that’s easy to get down really
Another cool vid, thanks. I find people are really helpful/friendly when you're bikepacking alone, not so much when you're in a group. By the way, can I ask what moodel Abus helmet you have & would you recommend it, looks good?
Thankyou mate :) that one I use for long days, it’s an abus aventor. I like it, well vented and it docks the second pair of glasses that I’m not wearing
ohh boy! UK on a sunny day its incredible. i was wondering where did u put ur sleeping bag but i assume it was all you had on the saddle bag right? you didnt bring a Tent`? Amazing ride!!
Thanks :) yeah just a bivi and sleeping bag inside the seat pack
Amazing ride and thanks for going to the trouble of filming it! I find long rides (so far 100 miles max) tough enough without worrying about filming them as well. I enjoyed the wise words about the obstacles and how the road will provide, that's probably a decent metaphor for life, you've just got to be brave enough to put yourself out there, something I need to work to be honest. On the other hand your parting shot made me laugh, was that by accident or were you trying to say something?!
thanks glad you enjoy :) what was the parting shot?
@@andycultracycling The last camera shot @ 32:27 I'm watching on a very large screen so it was hard to miss!🤣🤣
I'm knackered after watching that! Fantastic video Andy well done what editing software did you use?
Yeah was a bit tiring 🤣 thanks, it’s all edited in iMovie 😁
Oooh you went up the horrible side of hay bluff/gospel pass
Yeah horrible sounds about right 🤣 it was epic still
@@andycultracycling oh it's a great summit for sure.descending into Hay is the best way to go too.
Keeping it epic! That was great Andy; I think probably your best video yet.
I liked the way you integrated the to-camera on-bike shots with some voiceover, and the map - on such a long ride the map was really useful for understanding where you were and where you were going. Great choice of music - really enhanced the video. And that one passing shot on the bridge - I understand you probably want to keep those to an absolute minimum and just crack on, but they do add another interesting perspective to the video.
Overcoming all the difficulties (stomach, long climbs, wind, night time...) I guess pretty essential training for the Transcontinental.
Looking forward to part 2!
"At least I'm here"
thank you mate, I was pretty happy with this one. You are absolutely right, I want to up there production value, I enjoy it, but when your ride is 34 hours long stopping feels like a pain
Cool. Look, what is your experience with butt comfort in such long ride? Not at all? For me after 80km starts to bother ..and to be honest it's de limiting part for me
Hey, quite a few factors to that but I’m ok on that front. The right shorts, bike fit, and how hard you’re working too as you’re riding will contribute
what kind of staff are you using during bikepacking ? Do you use sleeping bag or etc ? Could you please create a list with links to buy or just names of it ?
hey, I use a bivvi bag and light sleeping bag, got a bit cold this time though!
@@andycultracycling many thanks)
what is the name of company and models for light sleeping bag and bivvi bag?
I use alpkit bivi bag, it’s called a hunka xl, the sleeping bag is a snugpak jungle bag, its tiny
