As a resident of Reno to me all those that came up to Donner despite the warnings are total fools. They deserve what ever bills the two truck companies give them. I can understand the truck drivers but to my mind both the CHP and, over here, NHP, should have shut down truck traffic earlier. Just glad no one stranded there died.
I still don't get why when told not to go somewhere due to the weather, people still do it. 🤦♀️

I'm in Chicago. When we hear a massive snowstorm and blizzard conditions are coming, we stock up and hunker down. What's up with people in California?
20 years of intermittent drought... people have forgotten the reputation of the snowy Sierra. And, an endless supply of city folks (SF or LA) who do not know how to drive in ANY adverse weather conditions, including rain or snow. AND they have little experience with adverse weather... they'll drive up to the mountains in shorts and flip-flops, and need to be rescued. You guys get a real winter every year, and you've learned to respect it. .
Millennials mostly, al working out of offices, not used to actually doing some labour/lumberjacking for firewood (other than ordering it from Amazon). Silicon valley has made them soft. They grew up in economical wealth in the 90s internet bubble and housing crises didn't affect Cali because IT kept growing. So the first real set neck for them is this: just some snow and imminent crisis😅😅😅
How did this happen? Why the heck were those cars trucks even up there? I don't understand how they got past CHP/ CALTRANS

Truckee is not a bad place to be in a winter storm provided you have safe and warm accommodations. Life in Truckee is at a much slower pace and people are very tight knit. Snow each year is always expected, but big snow....in this El Niño year can stop everything in it's tracks! Snow lovers will love this year to the 9th power.
I am curious why they allowed the cars access to a road everyone knew was about to be closed from a blizzard followed immediately by another blizzard. Anyone getting kickbacks from the tow companies?

My fellow Californians embarrass me. We were all told do not travel in this storm, now we tax payers have to pay for bailing out the idiots stuck that are also hampering snow removal making it worse.
Should be a minimum of a $1000.00 per vehicle charged for dislodging or towing. Taxpayers should not have to pay for their stupidity.
Just give the money to illegals...that will fix it. Loser state!

@@dwjoseph59 Besides the towing charges, every vehicle that had impaired snow removal operations should have their liscense plate number recorded and billed from the state for extra costs involved in snow removal cleaning up and rescue services costs. The CHP should have a huge reduction in their budget for their part in not shutting down the highway before the storm. Taxpayers should not have to pay for this boondoggle that was entirely preventable by all negligent parties.
Californians are not known for their smarts!

I love these poor field reporters who had to go out and interview the storm while the anchor meteorologist stays safe in the studio. “Snow continues to fall with sustained wind gusts of 150,000 mph out of the north west. I’m off to cash my check.” 😂😂😂

The pass from Truckee to Kings beach can be very slippery.
The towing service should charge 10 times or even 100 times more than the reguar charge to all those people who got rescued. Therer were so much advanced warning and in spite of that , most of these totally not wise people decided they will not be stopped from driving thru.

This is a colossal CHP/CalTrans FAILURE of epic, embarrassing proportions. They knew this storm was going to be BIG yet they let traffic proceed to their eventual doom and gloom stoppage.
I agree with that part, the highway should've been shutdown to only emergency personnel WAY BEFORE THIS STORM HIT!! And old man winter & mother nature ended up shutting the highway down for going on 48, and possibly longer, hours ANYWAY 😮😮😢😢!!

The highway could be cleared promptly if there were no stranded cars in the way. But all those selfish people will have to get their cars towed someplace so that the highway crews can do their job, and that wastes a lot of hours.

Am i to believe that every abandoned car will be towed then charged for the tow.? Doesn't the " state of emergency " rule kick in..The tow companies and sub contracted plow equipment go on a per rate, per day..The local government or Fed. emergency funds picks up the tab..??

Climate change is making weather events more extreme. Hurricanes are more frequent and more dangerous causing more damage.
Insurance companies are raising rates or even pulling completely out of the market. Water levels are rising every year making low lying areas and coastal properties a bigger risk to insure. Even condos are feeling the pinch. Rising insurance rates and repairs are getting passed on in HOA fees.
There will be a time in the future when people will have to self insure and risk the loss of everything. Only the rich that can afford to pay cash and take the risk will be able to buy coastal properties. Banks will not make a 30 year loan on a property that may be destroyed by a hurricane or will be under water in 20 years. Banks will not give a loan on uninsured properties.
Don't forget, we're still in a drought. Yeah, right.

It is a big storm but California not be able to open major freeway I-80 for four days straight is complete failure . Great job by Grusom , sixth world economy can’t deal with snow fall or fires in summer 👍
