  • Part 6 of my Ivy Bonsai. Its been pretty much left alone over the last few years. Its slow to thicken, so it is going to be many more years before it becomes anything impressive.

    Hi have some hedera trees, they can make decent trees, what surprised me is that you haven’t taken yours out of the pot, I think you would have improved the vigour if you had put it in a bigger training pot, it has the makings of a nice tree which most don’t bother working with. Good luck with yours.

      Cheers, yeah its just a matter of space, or i would use a bigger pot and i agree, more people should be using this species. its not perfect but it does a good job

    2023 was a productive year for this ivy. Definitely getting more tree-like. The lovely movement is from the natural movement of the vine? The trunk development is way more satisfying than on my grape vine!

      Cheers Sue, i think some of the movement is natural, but i did wire it pretty heavily a few years ago, so the trunk is more my doing (and your grape will get there! mine is slower too)

    After watching your success I’m hopeful of my grape vine turning into a bonsai. I planted it last year

    Hi, its leaves turning purple in winter is normal for the sun exposed and cool foliage I'm pretty sure. Since they do not drop and instead revert back to green once it warms back up it's very much an evergreen plant still, nothing to worry about. Cheers

      yeah, some one explained to me exactly why it happens, but it was too scientific for me haha. but as long its healthy, im happy. ..and it looks kinda cool when its purple too!

      @@BackGardenBonsai Exactly, I find the colour pretty nice as well. Bit sad because it usually means your in the midst of winter, but otherwise quite pretty :)

    Next report if you change the angle so the leader is in the middle pointing up, the main side brand will lean down. After some growth the tips will point up and look like a mature tree.
    It’s your tree you do what you love but I hope it gives you some ideas

    Where do gou find this kind of thick ivy, its gorgeous

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  6 месяцев назад +1

      this is skinny lol. look out for any over grown area of ivy and you will find stuff as thick as your wrist. If you see a tree that is been strangled with ivy, you will find some crazy thick parts going up the trunk. it should also take as a cutting too. shouldnt really matter the size, it should root.

      @@BackGardenBonsai thank you I have a load of ivy bonsai, but I'm finding it hard to find thicker woodier material, thanks
