@@TempeSoldier123 I was there. I've never been in a stadium that was so loud for a game. I have hearing issues and I'm still certain it started this day. That's how loud it was. Syracuse hadn't beaten Penn State in almost 20 years and when McPherson threw that TD to Moore the stadium just exploded! I've never seen a game where everything just went one teams way.41-0 at halftime before Syracuse called off the dogs and allowed some fourth qtr garbage points. Partied the night away at Sutter's Mill on Marshall Street. If you are from Arizona , Shadow Mountain HS 83'.
One of my all time favorite plays Daryl Johnson was fullback and Syracuse ran a third down quick kick. Johnson rolled right and punted. Damn thing went about 70 yards with the roll. SU players surrounded the ball and a PSU player for some reason came barreling in to them and kicked the ball. SU just dropped on it for an easy recovery. Next play McPherson ran a perfect freeze option to the left and went 20 yards untouched for a TD. Scored right in the corner of the end zone we were sitting.
The NFL had that stupid “idea” or “unwritten rule” that only 6’5” 235 pound QBs with zero mobility could play QB in the NFL. For ages I watched guys such as Jay Schroeder and Jeff George make big bucks, while great QB talents such as Don McPherson and Tony Rice went straight to Canada. If this was 1990, Lamar Jackson would’ve probably been in the same boat, as stupid and as insane as that sounds. (Doug Williams WAS a big, strong armed, pocket QB, such as those the nfl supposedly “approved of”. It’s only through sheer determination and his belief in himself that Doug Williams got his shot Inthe Super Bowl. Whenever the name “Doug Williams” is spoken, all NFL reps should be required by law to hang their heads in shame At their own stupidity and meanness. He broke the mold, made the NFL’s own cluelessness so plain to “thinking” fans. He actually did the nfl a huge favor; god knows the NFL did nothing to deserve such a man carrying the torch for the league.
I was there, man! For the PSU and WVU games in '87! Thanks for the memories Don, and congrats!
I will never forget that opening play against Penn State. I was in the Carrier Dome that day -- Absolutely Crazy.
Jonathan Easton wow. Do you still live in Syracuse? What do you remember about that day, besides the game?
@@TempeSoldier123 The entire game was just a PARTY. That opening play just set the tone for a romp and off it went!
I was there! I have hearing issues and I'm certain it was because of the noise that day in the Carrier Dome. Loudest stadium I've ever been in.

I miss eastern football.
CLASS !!!!!!!!!!
I grew up with Don McPherson. He should have won the Heisman hands down. He got screwed.
Totally agree. Nothing against Brown but ND was going 8-4 with or without him. No way Syracuse runs the table without McPherson.
If Don McPherson were playing in today's college football era he will be a 1st round pick
It's incredible to me that he lasted til the 6th round that year. Should've gone way earlier.

To this day I still can't believe that Michael Owens had the angle on the two point conversion.
He was McNabb before McNabb.
Preach !
nobody ran the freeze option better.
It was a thing of beauty.
