woke means treating disparate outcomes as proof of oppression on the grounds of some identity, and then demanding major shifts in society as a form of reparation. it's one meaning expressed in multiple descriptions, like most dictionaries you'll find. compare that to the answer for "what is a woman" which has a single description "anyone who identifies as a woman" that nonetheless ends up being completely meaningless, like a script a group of liars agree to use, but that nobody falls for.

Yes the definition has definitely changed. Jim Carey went through a spiritual awakening so was considered "woke" but now the term woke isn't associated with awakening. Language has become convoluted and seems to evolve generationally where terms aren't aligning - for example gen Z is hijacking the term "snatch" but all prior generations use it to refer to vaginas. People like Maher use the term "woke" as an umbrella term for alleged "political correctness run amok", which could imply a hundred different things depending on who you ask. The problem is, the people he's criticizing aren't particularly saying "woke", so why is "wokeness" always the accusation?
The first time I heard the term "woke" being used, it meant someone who was enlightened, open-minded, humble, understanding and compassionate, intuitive, and free of ego.
and now it's someone who is none of those things in a rational way, but in a horribly irrational way that has no ability to actually solve or even address problems...and makes even the far right look good...

The original meaning is "being awake to injustice", implying that most people are asleep to it or ignorant to it.
Because it meant people who saw themselves as more aware of injustice than everyone else, it was generally used by people who were seeing injustice when it did not exist. The people who flippantly call everyone they don't like "racist", "sexist", or "anti-lgbt".
Therefore, woke now refers to a type of person who reduces everything to race, gender, sexuality, identity, etc. People who see more social injustice based on identity politics than everyone else, not because they are "awake", but because they are delusional or just pandering.

However, I'd suggest that in both its original & expanded uses, "woke" didn't refer to a stance on trans rights or gender identity. The rightwingers put that idea onto it.
They twisted it into a pejorative catch-all term for liberal values, rather than a term that previously could've been described as neutral, if not admirable (insomuch as it broadly referred to a state of awareness, enlightenment, recognition, or not being deceived).
My understanding was that it originally described an awareness of society's embedded hierarchy of classes/races & an acknowledgement of the unconscious bias/inequality most white people are in denial of.

_Woke_ is the belief that men can have babies.
_Woke_ is the belief that having a penis qualifies you for the girl’s swim team.

Sept '71-May'74, the general goal was to be color blind, with regard to race, just as Bill described it. During the Nov '94 election, as results were coming in , my TV was on while I was working around the house. I kept hearing Peter Jennings discussing congressional winners and every single one of them were identified as a "racial assignment-American". I was deepely offended by this and questioned it at that moment as I was surrounded by family members. My very liberal sister in law told me that particular language was politically correct and anything else was unacceptable!! I questioned how is that not racist , and I was told to get used to it. From my point of view, "wokness" started with political correctness. I am an American. My famlies roots don't matter. My ancestors risked their lives to cross an ocean to become Americans. For me to accept a hyphenated, racist label is direspectful to my ancestors. I thank God every day for my relative's courage which allowed me to be born in America, and I encourage other to refuse "woke" lables

When the term was first being used, it described the depth and breadth of racism. It then morphed into becoming aware of the level of racism, sexism, misogyny and/or xenophobia that many have to deal with. Then a group of people assigned it their own negative meaning because they are very resistant to and hostile about such awareness.
But to many people today it means being aware that not everyone experiences the same world... it is awareness that one's own experiences doesn't dictate the limits of reality for everyone else, particularly when it comes to discrimination or oppression faced by a group other than one's own.
