  • Hello Everyone!
    Night Springs is probably the longest running sub plot in the Remedy setting. A simple TV show that rose up and took on a life of its own. First appearing in Alan Wake, it has shown up in every subsequent game. A mysterious town where weird things happen. But the town sometimes is a real place.
    What is the nature of this mysterious town? How do the events in the episodes eventually become real? At the end of the day, What is Night Springs really?
    In today's video we look at the first new episode in season 2 of this playlist. All of the previous season had full episodes for us to enjoy. From now on this is no longer the case. For example, this one is ends up being the plot of Alan Wake's American Nightmare. In the Arizona desert Barry Wheeler falls asleep in a hotel while on tour with the Old Gods of Asgard. An episode of Night Springs plays on the tv which happens to star his missing best friend.

    I love that in one of the night springs dlc we see that Alan's original draft of Control had *him* in the role of Jessie's sibling. Maybe he wrote it that way to give Jessie a motivation to rescue him, but changed it later when he realized his own background doesn't line up in a way that makes sense. Or maybe he wasn't ready to risk being under an entity's control yet.

      That’s literally my complete interpretation of the episode, I think these episodes are all Alan’s attempts at pulling out a hero to save him, but rose is both the lady of light and a trauma victim who has an obsession with him and love complex because of it, really doesn’t work for the hero’s journey if she goes through the trials and tribulations that the second games narrative throws at the hero and Alan at the end is just like “thanks I guess… where’s my wife?” Jack Joyce’s or Tim Breaker’s or Shawn Ashmores episode is an attempt at maybe someone connected to Alan who’s actually pretty good with dealing with and navigating time loops and different universes or dimensions. Problem is though is that Alan’s tempering hurts this time breakers hero’s journey. He found the wrong master of many worlds, he loses by Alan’s involvement. Jessie’s episode is supposed to have this ending for this reason where anyone can be like “what?” It’s probably something Alan realizes and decides that Jessie needs to complete her own journey without Alan’s touch as well, but then the question is begged, “so why then if Alan previous to Jessie even getting her powers at the oldest house was then later messing with the story in the awe dlc?” Because of the ending. The ending of the dlc is that they get an alarm that Langston brushes off as faulty because it’s from the future but it’s not. Stranger things have happened at the oldest house and it’s logical since even the people running it don’t really understand the universe/multiverse they live in. Alan’s last words are what are important in the reason why the dlc happened. “Things set in motion. If the alarm is true then so must be the reason for the alarm. It’s happening again. A return. You have been warned.” The whole dlc was his way of worming into the complex and getting that alarm to go off as an ambiguous strange tales horror ending. It’s what caused the second game to actually happen or at least return, we would have just gotten initiation without it.

      One thing they all had in common too is they were 100% self contained within its own episode of the TV show. Meaning all of the events only obeyed logic within a fictional setting.
      Alan Wake 2 involved someone who existed outside of the TV show and outside of the Dark Place. After the experience in the Other World according to the Heroes journey one has a few paths for crossing the Return Threshold. One of which involves a Hero who cannot return on his own and needs assistance from someone back in the Ordinary world. 'Rescue from Without'. This allows his story to be rooted in reality rather than 'only' be rooted in fiction which is why his prior attempts failed.

    In Alan Wake 2, when Alan reaches Parliament Tower, he is able to read emails on Alice's laptop from Barry. In one of them, he mentions going to a 'Blessed Wellness Retreat' run by a man named Chester. This indicates that the Blessed organization has set up a new venture, likely to create Altered Items. Hopefully, Barry stays safe.

      I'm wondering if Barry and Alice know more than they're letting on about Blessed. Probably not, but what if Barry is sort of undercover in this group? They were very careful to not include him in AW2 at all aside from these brief messages, and the only other connections we have regarding Blessed go back to Control.
      Either way, Barry's showing up in Control 2, that much I'm certain of.

    So both in universe and in a sort of 'meta' real world way it's obvious Remedy were playing around with ideas for the future with American Nightmare. The recurring timeloop being the first concrete example of the Spiral. The more overt threat of Scratch and how he played in both worlds (still convinced this Scratch was 'real', and Alan's possession a 'new' development). Do you think the hotel settings are coincidence, or perhaps an early link to Oceanview? Perhaps his attempt to contact Barry somehow let him discover, or at least 'tap into' the Oceanview, which might have been how he discovered Jessie and the FBC, allowing him to pivot there.

    I would have chosen, “Champion of Light or Herald of Darkness” I like the similarities it would give it to Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus. Wouldn't it make more sense for the Night Springs episode to be simply be titled "American Nightmare"? This would give an in-universe explanation for the game's name being "Alan Wake's American Nightmare", clarifying that it actually means "Night Springs presents: 'American Nightmare', written by Alan Wake", kind of like "Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo".

  • @CherryBlush313
    @CherryBlush313 Месяц назад +6

    I have two questions. Isn't it weird that Alan wrote that his mutual friend through Alice, Serena, "slept" with Scratch? Or was implied? Feel like Alan's got some thoughts. 👀Second question which is off topic but similar. How does Rose know, when writing her fanfiction, about Scratch? I mean it could easily be that the messages she received from "Alan" told her of his evil doppelganger. I'd like to think she saw him a few times throughout town thinking it might've been Alan but quickly found out he wasn't.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 Месяц назад +7

      Since Scratch was created from rumours about Alan people probably spread rumours not only that Alan was a serial killer but that he was a creep and judging by Scratch brainwashing Serena a rapist too. They probably thought he abused Alice as well.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  Месяц назад +14

      For clarification Serena didn't sleep with scratch. This fictional character who bears her likeness had her encounter with him. There is something more to this too. I intend to eventually do a video on why we have the three female presences in this game. One is new age Esoteric, one is Pure Science and one is designed to take Alan off his path. In the Odyssey the protagonist also went through temptations which could have made him abandon his quest to return home to his wife and son. The Witch Circe and Nymph Calypso specifically.
      For Rose... I mean it could be a few things. It could just be her going with romance novel tropes of the evil twin brother. But Number One Fan was written by Alan, not Rose. It did echo her own stories though. This begs the chicken or egg question. Was her fan fiction influenced by him or his influenced by hers? There is also the possibility that she is sensitive to inspiration form the dark place so she thought the idea organically originated from her. This setting is weird with inspiration.

    • @CherryBlush313
      @CherryBlush313 Месяц назад +1

      @@GamingUniversityUoG Hmmm, true. Yeah with Rose I think her fanfiction came first and Alan got a hold of it and morphed it for himself to try and escape. Who knows, maybe later Rose can actually do what Alan does in creating/manipulating realities later down the line. We don't fully know the lasting effects the Dark Presence had on her.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 22 дня назад

      I think 2's Scratch is a version of him the Dark Presence created in Alan himself by feeding on his despair that he might never escape the Dark Place, his madness from being down there so long, his grief when he thought he'd driven Alice to suicide, being trapped in loops he kept being killed at the end of and guilt at the pain and death his stories were causing.

    As you probably know there are two unreleased Night Springs episodes, "Murder Case" and "Altered World Event". Are you also going to make a video analysing them or what they could have been about?
    Casey's was most likely going to be based on his investigation of murders that he mentioned happened in New York in 2012. Though the one I'm most curious about is the second one, that title doesn't narrow it down too much.

    I think Alan wrote this scenario specifically to weaken Mr. Scratch and make him weak enough to be manageable, then he wrote Return to bring Scratch down once and for all, now that Scratch no longer had a corporeal form Alan could get him to a place where someone would use a bullet of light to destroy Scratch definitively. It's like Chess Alan was thinking three moves ahead and it worked he outsmarted Scratch and saved the world.
