And it looks like the fine was from 2015 for some other matter. “All” that came of this was getting his registration cancelled for 6 years

What's even more scary is the owners might not even catch these mistakes and think it's normal then 15 20yrs later when these issues finally rear their ugly heads will the owners find out how shit of a job the builders did which means they lose their entire investment and spend 10s or even 100s of thousands of dollars trying to fix the issues that shouldn't have been prevalent since day dot

The inspector should be sued. When I had my house built, I had inspections at the foundation pour, framing, fitting and pre handover. It cost but I saved a ton of money , time and grief. Plus the builder took more care with mine than he did with the other builds. Thank God for my buddy who's a builder.
I was absolutely horrified watching this. I can’t believe the private certifier has passed this.
I’m completely shocked that the builders would even do this workmanship. They should be prosecuted. That work they did on that home is embarrassing.
Not just minor things too. Like everything everywhere. Concrete was laughable, tile work was horrid, walls were SIMPLY NOT PLUMB! Who builds like that? A Blind man?

I have worked in the Construction industry for over 50 years and still encounter rubbish builds as you are reviewing. My compliments to you, you are thorough, professional and clearly know the applicable Standards. If only more “builders” had the commitment to do the job properly…..
I want a new organization beyond corruption to register the good builders and give us poor folk Who could never know this stuff Who to go to to find. Bullder. As stated I hope the shit builders go bust but my fear is they won't the good ones who do the right thing will because the sitty ones undercut them.
I used to do work for builders in the 90s and most of the good ones got out then because they couldn't compete with cheap large volume builders, it's really funny when you service their vehicles because all really bad ones carried weapons in their cars.
Just because you have worked in the Construction industry for over 50 years, of course you will "still" encounter rubbish builds such as these, because your 50 years doesn't contribute to these phony, scammers and impostors builders!

@@MrCav74 Large volume builders are not necessarily bad. There are some better and some worse. You could get a boutique builder build for you - there are plenty of those.
Being ripped off by a bad builder is terrible. People's life savings can literally be wiped out and there is very little anybody can do apart from expensive lengthy litigation that might not work. It's basically criminal theft. Thanks for your videos. You are doing important work.
Not only is this the bodgiest of builds, they also seem like the sort of faults that are so easy to do properly the first time, and an absolute nightmare to fix retroactively.

perhaps the building surveyor should have too pay half along with the builder to fix any faults found, surveyors are working for the builder , his employer, they need to be independent, its a system like Dracula looking after the blood bank

I laboured on building sites 3 days a week from 2014-2020 all over Sydney.
Worked on every site imaginable from massive commercial sites with 90 minute inductions to garden maintenance jobs conducted in a pensioners backyard and everything in between.
Over that time i didn't encounter a single company nor tradesman that id have do work for me.

My parents lived in a 100 year old weatherboard cottage. The neighbours built a house like this next door, and the builder hung an arm over the fence and told my Dad 'Your old house will be here a lot longer than this new one'.

It's the certification inspectors that really need to be held to account, obviously taking kick backs from the builders.
I'm so so confused that, how is it, that the inspectors who sign these things off have absolutely no onus to answer for their (literal crimes) in approving unsafe, incomplete and not-to-code work? Why is there no law to hold them to account?
That’s what happens when you let an industry self regulate. No one independent to hold them accountable means that they just do what they want.
It doesn’t help that the building groups lobby politicians so that no changes are made. Our leaders sold us out and continue to because they work for their donors and agendas

The last big house I built I had the engineer signing off all the way through the build and then at the end the private certifier ( selected by the owner ) spent nearly 8 hrs going through every nut and bolt. He got me for the finish on the hand built polished timber stairs was too smooth, I take my hat off to you for what you are doing, the industry is being destroyed by volume builders who have no souls

There needs to be criminal penalties to the builders, the stubbies and surveyors involved. Pierce the veil of the corporations and make them personally liable and that would clean stuff up!
What's the surveyors got to do with this! They likely just put the boundary pegs in and gave the builder 4 corners for the building location inside the lot and a finished floor level datum mark.

This makes me appreciate my 4000sq ft home built in 2007, with multiple inspections and almost near perfect ratings from each! I was complaining about my home being 16 years old but now I’m glad I didn’t get a new build

Good that these folks have someone like yourself to advocate for them in the face of this dumpster fire. I'm not a builder by trade (non-construction-related engineering), but I've spent the last couple of years re-doing a heap of shoddy renovation work on my place and even I could find, read and observe the relevant standards. It's not that hard!
The best advice I got from a nursing colleague was to get a site inspector before we accepted the keys. We had a few problems because we couldn’t get out because of lockdowns, but at least it could be sorted out.
A contractor and myself just had major issues with a bathroom remodel, the tile company sent a worker to tile a shower and the floor.
Told us they were done, my contractor called me and said please come look at this job. “ IT SUCKED “,, the job was bad, the Kerdi board was installed wrong, the Schluter sub floor was installed upside down. Everything to do with the tiling system was completely removed and redone. This bathroom is 10’ x 10’ it’s been 10 months since we started the process and the tile company is complaining about payment. My contractor sent them payment of what was left of the money, after all of my back charges and his extra work. Not one person from the tile company would take responsibility, the person sent to do the work, subbed it out to a couple of immigrants from Central America.
The homeowner is happy with myself and contractor, they said don’t pay the tile company.
Take pride in your work !!!!!! 41 years of being a plumber, I wished to hell I had tiled it !
Based on this video I don't think I would ever buy a new house in Australia.

Take a look at 100 year old buildings in Melbourne and it is evident that builders were artisans with pride in workmanship. This was before the BCA.

you are looking at something thats been upgraded and maintained since construction..
The civic buildings have a bit more to them, but anything residential was built as fast and as cheap as possible.
@@frankryan2505 There’s maintenance along the course of a building’s life but I’m illustrating that notwithstanding the absence of regulations and inspectors in the era, builders were STILL compelled ethically to construct well for the standard of the day. This is untrue now. Not only are buildings unattractive and without ornamentation, builders and inspectors can not be trusted.
Something changed societally.
It's called survivor bias. The 100 year old buildings we see today are the ones that lasted 100 years (obviously). They also built a lot of crap (like we do today) but they didn't last. The ones that lasted were the ones that got lucky and got maintenance.

Yes there are always rogue builders but take a look at the mouldings, the stonemasonry, the ornate cast iron, natural bluestone, hardwood finishes. We use a lot of engineered products today, which should realistically economise on the build. It seems to have had the reverse affect on quality. Low building quality is escalating.
@@Samsgarden I served my apprenticeship in the UK,carried out an awful lot of heritage and ecclesiastical work so I have a bit of experience.
Obviously we don't have the industry and poorly paid workforce to work on that scale and detail these days.
But mainly you are comparing apple's to oranges, a row of victorian era terraces compared to modern townhouses are worlds apart.
I agree that modern standards are terrible, but so much more goes into a modern building these days.
I'm sure a builder could knock you up something cheap if your plumbing was a Belfast sink and outdoor shitter.

Yep. This kinda stuff goes unpunished mostly and then when there's trouble, companies vanish.
There are so many shell companies that exist for the project then that company disappears if court action occurs

Awesome work. I am an electrician and I usually see some bad things....but this is beyond a joke. The certifier needs to be charged. The builders need to be charged. Just unbelievable. I am not a builder but even I know most of this stuff.
That's why you I don't risk it I NEVER use a licensed builder as they just don't care, they cut corners, its all about the money.

No, I was suggesting illegal DIY, as the system is broken anyway, and often you builder will sub contract to unlicensed to save money anyway. There is no accountability. If you know tradie mates that can show you how to diy. Save a fortune.

Brings back memories of my first home I was worried when the guy doing the council inspection didn’t bring a ladder and stated no need to go in the roof space ! I ran to the neighbors and got a ladder so he could inspect and it got signed off as all good. A few months after we moved in massive horizontal cracks opened up all along the side walls of the home. I hired an inspector and turned out that among other things the main supporting I been for the roof was not there! So roof was unsupported and pushing the walls out as it collapsed!!!

ESL teacher here, part of the problem (I think) is that the industry is dependent of foreign labour. Foreign labour itself is not the issue; it's the fact these people working are political campaign managers, doctors, accountants - whatever. They can't legally work FT jobs that require citizenship or a comprehensive VISA, so they can only get work in construction and service jobs mostly

Generally his report is passed on to the owners solicitor and over the next few years the builder will let the owner bleed out with legal costs trying to get a fix. Fair Trading is a toothless tiger.
I had my home inspected by SiteInspections. Quite a few defects and non compliant items found. There was a major issue with a water leak which would have been undetected without them. As for the process. After the inspection you get the report, then it's going to come down to how your contract is structured as to what action you can take. For us we had the builder repair the leak, a lot of the defects were minor and for us not worth the hassle.
Home owners who have this level of issues should first look at their legal options but then also provide videos like this to their government representatives and be very persistent in asking 'what actions are being taken to make builders and surveyors accountable for their builds, and what protections are being strengthened' ask for specifics, details, not buzz words and fluff. With enough noise change may come
same I would like to know how the home owners get on with the reports and what if anything the builders do and what if anything can be done to get them to fix all the breaches in the standards. Think "revisit" episodes would be great

I did not know that some builders in Australia were very sloppy and had very poor workmanship. It may be because those builders got cheap and unskilled laborers when they should've hired union and skilled labor in their respective trades. Dr. Horton, which is a very good builder here in the USA, has gotten sloppy lately, and its customers are already complaining. Thanks for sharing your expertise. It's very helpful, and if your advice is followed, it will save homeowners a lot of money, time, and headaches.

@@5punkybob I recently heard that in nsw when a someone with a building licence goes bankrupt their building licence gets revoked. Might be true, might not.

My father, who’s a science teacher, has helped build homes with builders, etc and lots of work on my parents home…and it’s light years ahead of this. This is everyone’s nightmare…we also have the added burden of having extremely expensive realestate and building costs. Hope this family get their money back
I worked for a Sydney builder for a year. On their Victorian homes.
They are one of the many Indians getting registered, how they get their registration is beyond me.
I tried to build to my usual standard but they were so hard to work for with no common sense. They imported all tapware and toilets and basins and a lot of electrical fittings . All the plumbing items came with the wells insignia on them but im sure this was never tested. So i would guess these window are the same and have come in from china.

If people actually look into the lies of China, the collapsing roads, collapsing buildings, the collapsing bridges, it is a country that do not follow the code, it's not a country you should trust with their products for your home.
If I was a builder I would have a guy like this signing off on each stage of every build before even contemplating telling a client a stage was completed. Where is the pride is peoples work gone? How can they hand something like that over to a family in good conscience? What a disgrace. No wonder they’re all going broke.
I grew up in Australia and I have to say, when self regulating came into effect in Australia primarily with the sub trades in the 90’s that’s when it all went down hill. I am now a building contractor in Michigan USA and the process of inspections during the building process here works well to keep things to code and in check. After pulling a building permit, there is the footing inspection, rough electrical inspection , rough plumbing inspection , rough framing inspection , roofing inspection, insulation inspection, drywall inspection then the final inspections for all trades. And some of the inspectors over here are tough😉
As they should be.
Truly these builders should be named and shamed, this is pathetic. The other thing is:- the Government should be held responsible, for allowing the sectors to help and assist each other, through each stage of building to account, and the worst thing is… even the certifiers are just as bad! They'll take the here-say of a builder instead of getting off their backsides to see what they approve.
I'd like to see both a list of good ones and also those to avoid.

I love your level of commitment to providing detailed inspections to a very high level, but could you please do follow up videos of these poorly built home upon handover after repairs, if they actually get done? Keep up your great work and videos, but you really should name the builders too, it would maybe make a difference to future build quality once they start loosing customers!

The issue is that the industry is self-regulated? And builders do not care?
SA is becoming bad, especially the last 5 years. Indian and Afghani in the trade not qualified nor have the fine detail to do a trade are rampant. The only decent Afghani tradies i have seen are tilers, but only 3 of them. As for painters, nah. It's not their fault...the government is allowing this to fester.

The house next door to my brothers house was rebuilt with only the front facade retained. We tried talking to the builders but not one of them spoke English ! Another neighbour visited the council to see the building plans but none had been submitted ! This is what happens when things get privatised, it opens the gate to corruption. Developers allocate lots to favored builders only. The public is not invited.
You might consider buying a 'not so great' shape house-NOT A GROW HOUSE- and fix it yourself. This way, you avoid all the red tape, the meatball subs AND the neighbors will love you for cleaning up the eye sore.
Just a thought.

When aomething like this come to light, the building surveyor should be scrutinised as to how it slipped past, or if they were just paid off. These are pretty easy spots.
Wouldn't this house technically be considered a condemned building in the eyes of the local council even though it's "brand new"? Given how many issues you found with it throughout the video i think it could qualify for that...What really needs to happen though is every single inspector that has looked over this site up until you have needs to have their paperwork combed over that gave each stage of inspection a pass (depending on how many inspections there were of course) and if they don't match what yours says (yours is essentially the "final" one before handover) then every single one prior to yours is probably hand in hand with the builders...
I'd say chances are the builders would have their own preferred private certifier. With a private PCA, will be much easier to get their occupation certificate. I would like to have enough faith that a public certifier through Council would not sign off on this.

Builders in Sydney are popping up quicker than kebab trailers and It completely amazes me that people will seek them out for their builds instead of getting a reputable builder that's been in the game for decades, while mistakes will still happen they will always be fixed.

Building inspector that passed it ,, passed the house on the way to the pub to meet the builder for a counter meal , getting out of the car must be against company policies
In the mid 70's it was known that SCOs' (safety code officers) would hand out bundles of signed off inspection stickers to the builder.
Sad to hear counter meals have replaced country club memberships.

This is why I built my home myself, except for the plumbing and electrical. It took over 2 years, but at least I knew every bit complied with standards.
You'd be amazed at some of the buildings I've seen that have been certified, being a Fire Technician.
The worst I saw was a new 5-storey building of residential units that looked like it was built with leftover supplies from some builders warehouse.
The fire rated door frames were too short by 150mm, which means I was looking through the gap and waving at the family having breakfast inside. The building had been certified and serviced by other technicians twice, before I came along and flagged every defect on the building 🤣
As an ex building inspector , i saw so many issues over the years many people dont want to spend a few hundred dollars to find out the truth.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't realise that to fix a problem, it often needs an expert opinion and those usually cost a pretty penny or two... throw money at problem, problem gets fixed sooner than later :) ..... usually, anyway. Service standards are going down (plummeting, perhaps) thanks to the lack of generally giving a shit about a fellow Aussie or hell, fellow human being. It's fookin' sad.

the only time that markings for safety glass isn't required... is when it's not safety glass, so the builder opted for cheaper, less safe glass
I moved to Australia a year ago and was and still am shocked about the finish of most houses. Nails/screws sticking out, uneven floors, openings (for mice and other rodents) where there shouldn’t be etc etc. I was also unpleasantly surprised about the general quality of homes. I thought they would have more solid and thicker walls and definitely more insulation as it can be very cold and windy during winters without it. It’s a pity that insulation and ‘smart windowing’ seem to be ‘not a thing’ overhere. Also the window frames look so high maintenance (+ old fashioned) and of questionable quality and I’m missing window ledges due to the fact that outer walls are so thin and not that sturdy overhere. I come from a country where they use cement and brick so I understand I have to adjust my expectations to how they build houses overhere but I have difficulty understanding why no modern insulation techniques and double glazed window (with double openings) aren’t used.
I feel sorry for the family moving into this house. This house is a recipe for the disaster. I hope they’re contractually protected for all of the issues that are non-compliant. This is not how moving into your new home should look like😞.
It's the result of a couple decades of degradation of oversight and an increase in the political power of building/construction lobby groups, both through financial contributions and by getting industry plants into official placements. Not that it wasn't an issue before that, of course, but it's definitely reached the point that a problem gets to when the perpetrators have got away with increasingly worse standards over time to a point of complacency.

I thought exactly the same as you. I am still very shocked by what I learn and see everyday. I was told that this has been problem for decades apparently and the building construction quality is quite poor in Victoria where I live.
If youre gon a buy a house, buy old. Anything built in the last 20 years is a coin toss as to how its gonna fall apart.
