I heard a couple of contractor say they "hate" Mike Holmes (because he shows them how bad their work is and how lazy they are for not doing it right the first time). GO MIKE!
We need more like Mike. My house is a 1934 and nothing is square or 24” center. It can be 18” or 24” Floors aren’t even level. Not what I wanted in a fixer upper. Now I can’t afford doing anymore since getting sick.
They drawing at the very end was awesome! I admire you for keeping that structure, it probably would have been easier, and cheaper, to have removed it and built from scratch. Instead, you would good stewards of Mother Earth.
That first house is so cool! The exterior design reminds me of my house in a lot of ways -- high deck with double garage underneath, wood trim, etc. The inside design is perfectly funky and unique. That garage is the first episode I've seen where no amount of apologetics can explain away the miss on the inspector's fault. A lot of times the inspectors were lazy (didn't climb up on the roof) or limited (can only see parts of the house they were allowed to access), or it's plausible they just didn't see something (water leaks if it wasn't raining), but there's no way they could be at the house for 3 hours and not realize the garage is an open space. Now, I understand why Mike did it, but I would be absolutely _devastated_ to lose a 2-car garage, especially that far north. And the way they redid the driveway just adds that much extra work to do if they ever decide to remodel it back into a garage in the future.
It never ceases to amaze me how people can sell their house to another family - knowing full well there are problems and say nothing. People are inherently self serving and money driven. Sad really
Based on all the gaps present and their various natures you'd have to remodel/restructure most of the house to even begin to make that room airtight in relation to the rest of the house....It would've been possible to wall it off like they did and then build a two car garage extended off the front of the house and attach it to that previous room through two double doors (Airlock style). But then there would be the issue of how to make it worthwhile to access the house from that new garage. 🤔
A green jacket on the wiring does not always indicate Aluminum wiring - my house (built in 1964) has a lot of the green fabric/tar jacketed cable, but they are all copper wire.
I love watching this show I just wish Holmes would go into the house blind not knowing what's wrong with the house to see if he finds what the problems were with out help to see in the inspectors should of really found the problems. Cause he see it and they didn't they don't need to be inspectors.
I think the trick to this show is that (a) he knows what the problems are beforehand and (b) he's allowed to do destructive testing. Don't get me wrong, he's still really good and he's still following a lot of really bad inspectors, but those two things exaggerate the size of the issue for added TV drama.
Are the home inspectors, who miss obvious dangerous structural issues that are visually present, reported to any licensing agency? It seems too many miss very obvious problems, that put the new owners at high risk. They are purchasing a "professional inspection" and not getting one.
Sorry, but who on this Earth is letting their car run for sooo long in a garage that it can kill everyone in the house? Ridiculous over the top reaction.
In some parts of the world during winter people are running their cars for a good while to warm the car up. This is why remote starts are a thing because they don't want to go out in the cold. Not everyone does this, but it needs to be accounted for in building design.
I realize that you had an inspector , but i don't understand what you are thinking when you know the house is 40 years old and it is in need of patching or repairing.
Since when is it against any Code to park a Car or Truck in a Garage that is a Garage ?? That makes NO Friggin' Sense !! Then what in the Sam Hell is a Garage for ??????🤔🤔🤔🤔
It's against code to not have separation between the garage and the residents it should atleast be a steel door that seels off the gases from the residents. Carbon monoxide is deadly and can kill you, if you inhale to much of it, you don't smell it but you can get very sleepy and disoriented and you fall asleep and you don't wake up. The garage was built incorrectly so it didn't meet codes.
WTH Frank!? I thought you represent as going above code? Yet only ONE receptacle on each wall in his work studio? I say it requires TWO 20A circuits with 2 receptacle outlets (with 6 plug expanders on each) on EACH wall. Step it up dude.
My God ! That was way Too Much NM-B Romex that Electrician ran into that box ! Code only requires at least 6 to 8 inches from the outer edge of the box and he had about 2 ' !!! WASTEFUL !!!

Expensive remodels wish I could afford it my house was built in 1940

Really sad! Sign of the times!!😢
In the first house I chose to make the garages airtight from the inside to the living area so that they could simply be used as garages.

Those green jackets also had aluminum written on it, so that sort of confirmed it.
I think he was just saying "Those green jacketed wires we can see are all aluminum". He did say they verified every one.
A couple more good but repeat episodes! Looking forward to more new episodes you haven't posted yet!
We're glad you enjoy the "oldies but goodies." New episodes are on the way, stay tuned! 😊
@@homefultv Looking Forward.
Thank You !
Pretty cool couple the "Clays". 😂 I like her she's smart and cute.

NEVER SAW AN ELECTRICL PANEL ON ITS SIDE . I WAS AN ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR FOR MANY YEARS AND CODE ALWAYS HAD THE PANELS VERTICAL
It depends on the region actually
Seems to be a common occurance in Canadia.
That’s a nice house

"I'm the boss
(Mike's is my boss)

Can anyone tell what the third line says?
I think it’s (Sherry’s our boss) - which is Mike’s daughter
Nice area of chatoyence, there. L9vely bowl/ platter. Well done!
The HWT vent is not pitched correctly its going downhill not good
We all wish we have a Mike and David 😢
You mean Damon? They're still working, just outside of TV.
What about helmets on those guys working under the deck?
Sorry, but who on this Earth is letting their car run for sooo long in a garage that it can kill everyone in the house? Ridiculous over the top reaction.
Building code. People won't do that, but with a correctly built garage, they're able to.
In some parts of the world during winter people are running their cars for a good while to warm the car up. This is why remote starts are a thing because they don't want to go out in the cold.
Not everyone does this, but it needs to be accounted for in building design.
Some people work on cars in a garage which requires the car to run. If you're rebuilding a car it may not be able to move for awhile.
Canada is cold
It always amazes me how people thik it is good to mix copper with aluminium wires. Stick to one of those things, people!
I realize that you had an inspector , but i don't understand what you are thinking when you know the house is 40 years old and it is in need of patching or repairing.
Really wish they could get the original masters and upscale it. Video quality of these vids waver from potato to acceptable.
Contractors that don’t like Mike are sloppy contractors and are jealous of Mike.
WOW
Be easier to rip the ugly mid air addition off
Holmes tapped that just saying lol

Common sense should tell you not to use that as a garage.
😂🤣😂🤣
Not common knowledge that most even consider unfortunately.
If that is what it takes is to have someone point out their mistakes then so be it get over it
These two really are not the sharpest tools in the box
LOL aluminium rusts?? this guy uses his own version of magiuc rusting aluminium XD
Recognized this episode immediately based on her hairstyle. There is not a person alive that looks good in that hairstyle.
2010s, what can we say
It's rare to her the men talk the lady's mostly.home oners
