@Pgt93 Yes I'm quite sure that some of them know, but a lot of the time the actual builder never goes to the site. They rely on someone else with limited experience, and who isn't trained properly.
I am disgusted! With over 43 years working in the building trade, I have never seen such appalling workmanship. Thankyou for your committment to integrity. Keep it coming.
Imagine if it snows on that roof, or what happens when the walls get sheetrocked, furniture is brought in. Terrible construction, seems like the guys first time with metal studs. I find this the most entertaining program I have seen -- Ought to be on TV -- Fascinating -- Cant take my eyes off the screen -- So much money involved -- So destructive -- I suspect that this is not "big greed" but 'penny pinching' -- I suspect that these so-and-so's are smashing the hopes of their clients for a couple of hundred dollars here and there or to get on to the next job one day earlier.
I’m a site manager for a very reputable building company in WA. I have never seen anything this horrid in my entire life. Our workmanship over here is actually still really good all things considered over the last few years. Contrary to what people may think about the building industry there are still builders and site managers out there who care for the client, the build and the company and are passionate about what they do and strive to provide each and every client with their dream home. Makes me sad to see stuff like this. Thanks for doing gods work mate in exposing this kind of thing. All I ask of anyone wanting to build is PLEASE, do your due diligence in researching for reputable builders.
It is mentioned in the video that the build passed inspection. What is the point of inspections if this passes? How can a consumer protect themselves if there is no accountability to the public for delivering this level of incompetence? Is the law actively shielding dodgy operators and organisations from exposure? The end result is unavoidably that it reflects badly on those who do the right thing..😞
@suspicionofdeceit Search for "home inspection" on RUclips and you will find all kinds of US construction disasters. I like the guy who does inspections in Austin Texas. They build their walls with cardboard sheathing.
Residential structural engineer here - hoo boy, where do I start?? I'd be tempted to condemn it in it's entirety, many many non-compliances in addition to the ones you identified....... I think this video demonstrates the absolute necessity of independent 3rd party inspections. A good independent inspection will be the best money you will ever spend, as a builder OR a home-owner - It never hurts to have a second set of eyes on something!
Truss and Frame designer here, one of the biggest things is builders cheaping out on engineering. Half of the engineering plans are a slab design and every other part is "by supplier" The houses are getting crazy, the draftys don't understand how they are built and the engineer just gives up and leaves it to timber guy to sort.
…. And builder with 46 years experience here. This place is stuffed. It needs to come down. There’s really no rectifying the issues here apart from starting over.
What happens in these scenarios? Does the home owner just have to write off the payments he's already made and start again? I guess it's better than finding this stuff out after you've moved in.@@rosscato8745
Yeah I didn’t trust our site supervisor, best money I spent was hiring my own 3rd party inspector with stage inspections before each progressive payment. Kept the builder on their toes.
The house that my parents got built more than 20 years ago had only one "defect", i.e. a loose door knob. The quality of workmanship, for the most part, has crashed. Greed has taken over.
People are no longer happy to earn decent wage, they want the max $$$ with minimal effort. Even if you offered these guys 20% extra to make sure it's done right it still would have been in the same state. People who have no issues cutting corners will do it regardless of the money on the table.

If only all homes (and other industries) were built with that level pride and pleasure we all be on a better level. Sometimes I think expanding the apprentice and internship agenda (the American system) on zero or close to no pay from late 1998 in Australia to now , has made lots of new talent bitter or care little of their works, you get what u pay for. Young trades every decade have to do even more hundred of hours free of charge to obtain a certificate of skill. You should pay for work, even if it little, it's something to acknowledge their efforts not not feel a fool. But it's true, if you can, build your own. I'd love to have that chance 😊
@@monicakristy4590 in the US i was getting $16 per hr as a union apprentice and the journeymen were getting 32, we worked our way up. at the time most people in labor etc were getting 14-16 dollars an hour or less.
@@justaguy-69 Well I stand corrected. I'm glad you had a good beginning into the industry. I heard the terms from the US originally, but when it became more widespread here in oz throughout the 2000s pay levels just started to drop and drop to the point of no pay so you can get your certificate to work and get pay later. Now it's in other industries like nursing, design so on.... That said, there is a way to get pay, but usually it won't be allowed to count toward any certifications. I think if your getting help from an employee and they are doing their best and learning, payment is the fate trade. But you wouldn't pay someone who doesn't work or doesn't want to contribute and grow. But this goes both ways.
I keep going on about it, make the people who sign off compliance accountable. Strip them of their ability to do the inspect, make them accountable for the cost to get it back to compliance. I bet after the first time an inspector gets charged and loses his registration they rest might not be a flippant.
Simpler solution......STOP allowing the builders to engage their own building surveyors and have the lender and/or home owner appoint one instead. It should be law or at least contingent on a building permit and or home loan approval. Unfortunately the current model means the home owner either pays once and suffers the shodiness of the builder's surveyor (read mate) or they have to pay twice to engage their own independent inspector as well. Builders do factor in the cost of their surveyor when they sell a house build contract. We had to pay for an independent inspection company for our build and surprise surprise !....each and every stage of the inspection that the builder's surveyor had signed off on, our inpsector found many defects. After days each time back and forth with the builder throwing up arguments, the builder each time had to pause the build, reassess and then agree with us and rectify. This added 6 months to the build equating to 6 months of extra rent payments @ $600 per week of which the builder just shrugged and went "oh sorry about that", no refunds and no offer of a discount This essentially equated to us living without items we'd planned to do after the build due to a lack of funds which were re-directed to extra rental payments due to their stuff ups having to be reworked after initially being passed by their own inspector. Onlyone time did their surveyors rescind their approval after we challenged their 'expert knowledge' when confronting them with our inspector's findings. Can't argue standards I'm afraid! At the end of the day the government has allowed this to happen by A. allowing builder appointed inpsections, B. not being heavy handed enough when builders breach the rules and C. creating this mess in the first place by pushing a building boom that builders can't keep pace with in the first place.
@@panfon5650 it’s basically fraud at worse or theft. You are stealing money from people by signing of so a builder gets payment regardless if they do the right thing or not. We are not talking hundreds of dollars but $100k or more. People have been locked up for less.
If you think the building industry is corrupt, the medical is even worse. Most of the people shocked about this build likely followed Government health advice to get the jab. Every industry is compromised.
My first year dyslexic apprentice has eternally better understanding of plans, regs and physical workmanship than these cowboys, the fact that multiple people and companies were involved in this is a massive issue. When I built my house, as an unlicensed owner builder my work was inpected at every stage by a dpt.of works inspector. Every failed inspection (not many) had to be rebooked and paid for. The spec builder doing the house on each side of me simultaneously was subjected to only half as many inspects. His footings were pored with mud covering the steel. My build took 2 yrs mostly on my own after work and w-ends. 34 yrs since my final I've had to do no remedial work. Not so the houses either side of me. I have friends in the industry who say any house built this century should be considered sus. Wouldn't want to be a buyer these days. Quality relies on proper inspections.

The Building industry in Australia is a complete shambles, for the life of me I can’t understand why state governments around Australia decided that it was a “good” idea to outsource the certification of buildings from the government to private certifiers. I mean, the amount couldn't have been more than what his license is worth... This is *WAY* beyond shoddy, it's *CRIMINAL* for both of them.
As corrupt and slanted as Aussie laws are in favour of builders and AGAINST home buyers, I would honestly be stunned if justice is served with most of these. The big shitty builders are right in bed with the politicians.
builder has several options.. abscond, or drag it through court in a manner that makes it just simpler and easier for the homeowner to have paid twice for a second builder to finish properly
DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MORE MONEY!!!!! Those that did the work need to rectify the issues. Those that inspected and passed the building need to be decertified, either permantently or for a specifice time ( plus fines ). I feel so sad for this bloke.....
Correct me if I am wrong, standards have gone downhill since building inspections and approvals were privatised. When the Council's inspected every stage of a build there was accountability and standards were adhered to,
State and Local building inspectors should be involved and this contractors licence should be reviewed. The lawyer should also be made aware of his obligations to ensure his clients are not beaking the regulations.

I'm not an engineer, I was a metal tradesman and have even worked on a few building sites. Without even touching the minutiae is that the tradies who did this job have no understanding of the mechanics involved in this construction. If you are putting patch after patch after patch on a structure, then it isn't right and needs to be taken down and started again. Shocking build.
You would love the builders that built the house we currently rent, our landlords house which is next door and our old house. All the same builder here in Sydney. Our last one had mould growing within 6 months of renting it from brand new and was literally falling apart within the same time frame. We were paying $900 a week in rent too.

Love your work site inspections... Keep up the good fight.. I honestly can't believe the building standards we accept here in Australia.. the local councils state and federal governments are the biggest criminals of all for allowing this to continue.
Loving your work. Curious as to how this will be resolved on site. Who is the building surveyor I wonder. Not building control but today building is out of control.
Thank goodness you're doing this! (Deserved a complete rebuild. In 2006). Reported to the then Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, with several other victims of bad and passed building and inadequate compensation, requesting help (especially for Pensioners). Our stories were buried. Thought Labor would help, but no, have just made accessing compensation harder. Supported the starting of a group, Victorian Building Action Group, to tell all the horror stories, back then, 300000 victims of bad building through VCAT in Victoria alone annually. The financial, personal, relational and health losses to the purchasers is horrendous. A loss to the Victorian economy of billions!
Sad to hear of your experience. As so many have said here and across lots of the other videos, our government and (so called) consumer protection agencies are completely failing us.
Handy hint for everyone having problem with your builder...whilst you are not legally allowed to name and shame them on the internet, you are allowed to regularly email images and reports to all the parties involved, until it is resolved, this includes the builder, fair trading, certifiers and the home building insurance co..detailed large puctures each day with progress updates are good...remember the squeaky wheel always gets the oil.
Great video yet again! Just one bit of advice for when you have guests on and ask them questions, let them answer without interrupting. It makes for better viewing when only one person speaks at a time. Orherwise, no complaints from me. Let's go!!
You get 70 Uber drivers working under 1 builder with a ticket building 20 houses and this is what you end up with. Back 40 years ago it was 1 builder with 2 apprentices working on 2 houses. Reason for 2 houses was while other trades were working on 1 house the builders could jump next door to the other house and keep working. But they were always close by for the other trades to talk to if needed. No mobile phones and coffee shops in those days. The builders even laid the driveways but not these days. Passed off to sub-contractors and you wonder why houses cost so much.
And it’s insane how overpriced construction is, frames were made on-site in those days - surely labour costs nowadays should be minimal in comparison (adjusted for inflation, of course).
As a retired Mason I have seen many contractors take shortcuts, some it seemed with no concern for the homeowners. The more I worked with younger tradesmen the more I witnessed. The "it's good enough" attitude. Sadly today the workmanship is not what it used to be and a big reason for that is the inability for a tradesman to make a decent living and a GC having to bid the absolute lowest to get jobs so they take shortcuts. It is very true especially in building that you get what you pay for. I really appreciate the details this youtuber presents. I hope we can learn what happens to the builders.
It’s astounding but not surprising that this abomination passed the frame inspection. I’m a plumber working domestic around Vic and the dodgy work I see is daily. Knowing Peter for many years he definitely know what he is doing.

Half of the engineering plans are a slab design and every other part is "by supplier"
The houses are getting crazy, the draftys don't understand how they are built and the engineer just gives up and leaves it to timber guy to sort.
…. And builder with 46 years experience here. This place is stuffed. It needs to come down. There’s really no rectifying the issues here apart from starting over.

@@monicakristy4590 we had class and got paid 1/2 scale working and learned from our co workers and journeymen.
I keep going on about it, make the people who sign off compliance accountable. Strip them of their ability to do the inspect, make them accountable for the cost to get it back to compliance.
I bet after the first time an inspector gets charged and loses his registration they rest might not be a flippant.
Spot on.
Yes the most staggering thing about this is that it passed frame inspection......
@@panfon5650 it’s basically fraud at worse or theft. You are stealing money from people by signing of so a builder gets payment regardless if they do the right thing or not. We are not talking hundreds of dollars but $100k or more. People have been locked up for less.

I’m not going to pretend to know even the slightest thing about building but the way you show us how out of spec these houses are is truly frightening!
Well done on exposing these cow boys!
Cheers Pat 🇦🇺
2:39 nope not even close to being done... Welcome from Tennessee USA 🇺🇸
The “tradies” involved need to be fined for their actions! 😡
They can’t speak English & apparently that’s racist!
And then deported
@@chainsawversustree to where ? Tassie
Fined with a chainsaw
fine! this is like thief. need to be jail for 5-10 years is the only way they pull their act together
Thank goodness you're doing this! As someone who's barely survived my (fully signed off) house build (Building Warranty Insurance wouldn't pay out) and corrupt VCAT only awarded $80000 for remediating the necessary civil/structural engineering beneath my home on a steep site with a minimum $250000 repair bill for a $150000 build house..
Scary that this guy has probably built other houses that are ready to collapse with nobody any the wiser. Yet.
And when they release the cowboy will be long gone..... probably pheonixed and operating under a different name and ownership structure
Exactly, I don't know why the criminals aren't being named and a clear warning to other potential customers.

Land has also gone up in case you hadn't noticed.
100%. + they will do anything to save 15 minutes. Might cost the next trade hours but who cares.
2.5 pages of defects on my $600k house. 2017.
fantastic - very impressed by the wealth of information here and the experts you get in
It’s astounding but not surprising that this abomination passed the frame inspection.
I’m a plumber working domestic around Vic and the dodgy work I see is daily. We need a rigorous inspection process to keep these builders in check. People are literally signing over there life savings for this crap 😢
Bring back clerk-of-works.. Both state & National building associations & authorities should should assist this man or what is the point of them...
I used Dynamic Steel frames at a site up in rawson Victoria, and Sungwoo and the team did a fantastic job. Went together like a dream.
I'm bewildered by the builder's scantiness of integrity. It is purely donkey work here.
(and the rubber stamping surveyor/inspector)
My heart goes out to the poor home owner 😢 thought and prayers 🙏
Thankyou Site Inspections for sharing.
As have been in the aus steel frame industry for over 15 years, i learnt many new players trying to promise anything but inexpeienced to make it happen.
we deliver what we promised, and we have all coils tested to as1397 coils and you have to know what it is about and not to rely on labs or mills.
As for the steel frame, the issues all can be found at the shopdrawings stage, use the experienced ones will cost you more in the begining but peace of mind during the journey. Knowing Peter for many years he definitely know what he is doing.
Great video. Cant believe the state of the building industry. Looking to a dual-occ build and every video i watch i wonder if there are any good builders out there and how do you find them!
Really feel for this homeowner and it would be great if you keep in touch and do a follow up video about the outcome from the inspection.
It's a constant battle between builders and trades.
Love the videos.
Think this is my new favorite RUclips Channel.
Keep it up.
Lots of time goes into these videos with evidence.
Just wish we could see the builders and owners faces when you show them this
Thank you for providing this highly detailed video of a housing nightmare, I feel sorry for the owner and totally ashamed of the Building industry, how the government that licenses these Builders can justify their fees is beyond me. This is a good example of absolute failure the Builder should be "hung up to dry" and never build again. I hope a claim can be out through Builders Insurance and recompense this client for damage and loss of time. I thought that your videos were terrific however I feel you could enhance your comments with a laser pointer and maybe a torch to help relate your comments to where you are pointing, sometimes it's a bit hard to comprehend where you are pointing. All in all a great video, and more strength to your arm - great work I think you are making a difference, keep it up.
