Find a beginner class taught by people that are deaf & hard of hearing! There may be some classes in person near you and there are definitely classes online.
The alphabet. I learned BSL by learning the alphabet first and going from there. You can say anything if you can spell it! Our alphabet is entirely different to the ASL alphabet but you pick them up quicker than you’d think!
this happens so much when learning any language, not just sign. imo not getting very far when signing but still trying and failing is way more respectful than not trying at all. i don't think too many people in the real world outside of tiktok make up their own signs in overconfidence
Can you imagine telling someone learning or attempting to speak any language that they are overestimating their ability. I know from experience how discouraging it is. Communication is the greatest tool we have in this world. It can tear apart relationships or it can build nations. Use it wisely.
This was just recently told to me, but the Oklahoma School for the Deaf is literally accepting people for free online classes of ASL 1 and ASL 2 for their spring semester! The lessons are be self-paced, too, so you don't have a strict schedule to keep up with.

You can be watching classes online but that is not the same as a classroom where you interact with others. ASL is a beautiful language and not simple to learn as a second language. I want to learn correct ASL.
Look up Bill Vicars here on youtube. I found his videos the best way to not only learn signs but also grammar. He's a deaf professor that records his class and is super easy to follow.

OH MY GD I love that actress sosososo much! I first saw her in my all time favorite show Jericho (2008) and was so sad when the show was canceled after the first season. I also love her in supernstural and am so excited for a new role to watch her in!!!!!

If you know, you know. But, there's also a "season 4" collection of 5 more books that I didn't know about! So everyone here gets to have a bit more new stuff! Thanks for making me go look.
She's a joy in everything she's in. Easily my favorite character in Jericho, and I love that show big time. At least an attempt was made to communicate. Partial credit for that. But signing can be super useful even for fulling hearing folks. I work around jet engines and high noise areas, and it's incredibly useful to tell someone that you need a specific tool at a distance or during high noise. At the very least, learn your ABCs and counting. If you don't know the sign, you can spell the word.

My ASL skills are probably pretty close to the guy in this video, but one thing I do feel confident in saying, from learning *other* languages, is that the sooner you can start producing speech - with mistakes - along with someone who is able (and **willing**) to help you correct them - then you will learn very quickly. You can't be afraid of getting it wrong or you will literally never learn. Just make sure the context is appropriate and welcome to learners who will make mistakes - once you know that, go for it!

Also, you should definitely know how to explain your level of fluency in whatever language you are learning, in ASL you should definitely know how to say "I'm learning ASL" and "I know _some_ ASL" because certain common mistakes can be perceived as insults. The most famous one (and honestly, I blame the language itself because who decided this?) is "shy" vs "prostitute." There is no etymological reason for those two words to be so similar. And learn to read the person you're talking to, I once had a friend who was coming out to me, and we were talking about his abusive upbringing, and it was interrupted by a hearing student wanting to practice. I'm not saying you should never try, but there is absolutely a right and wrong time to do it.
@@moosedougexactly. My family is Peruvian but never taught me Spanish because my mother didn’t want my sister or me to learn. As a result, what little I’ve learned by myself is spoken with a gringa tongue and I stop speaking around my family because they make fun of me for it
Overestimate isn't a bad word you guys, it's just hat happens when you are learning a language. You start to say something and realize you don't quite know how. It wasn't meant to be an insult or discouragement, just the way it is when you're still learning.

yeah dont expect to communicate everything in sign after you learn a little bit. it takes years. the only way to become fluent is by signing everyday.
