  • This rare video comes from Emil Gilels' 7 January 1983 recital in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He played this recital two days before the much better-known performance of 9 January (in the Tchaikovsky Hall) which was released on CD by Melodiya and on DVD by VAI. However this performance of 7 January is never shown. It contained the same programme of Schumann and Mendelssohn, but the first half of Brahms was either not played or, more likely, not broadcast. Programme below:
    0:40 - Schumann Four Pieces (4 Klavierstücke), op. 32
    14:55 - Schumann Symphonic Etudes, op. 13
43:07 - Mendelssohn Songs Without Words (Lieder ohne Worte), op. 38 no. 6, Duetto
    48:12 - Mendelssohn Etude op. 104 no. 3 in A minor

I love Gilels playing. With him, there are no eccentricities, no annoying mannerisms, just a dedicated artist who subordinates his own ego to serve the composers intentions as best he can. Integrity, sensitivity, nuance, depth of feeling, plenty of power when he needs it but never showy. He’s got it all. My idea of a great musician.

Thank you. Gilels was a great musician. I read that he became very nervous before performing. One wouldn’t think so, watching him at that piano. This is a wonderful recital.

Gilels became especially nervous once in Helsinki, when KGB held him on the phone for TWO hours before concert. He came down trembling and greyish pale and uttered: "They are threatening me. How do they expect me to play?". The audience noticed, that he wasn´t as much "on" as he used to be. ´Poor man. I believe, he was stressed to death. His brother in law, Leonid Kogan, was forced to spy in the classical music "landscape" -- and his sister served as a "mole". He didn´t have it easy.

There aren’t many musicians, specifically pianists who are distinguishable or have an extremely recognizable sound. Emil is one of those few. Why are the Russians so damn good at piano? Oh and composing astounding “timeless”music that truly touches the soul! I guess Z Germans are as well 😉.

This is the recital of a very great artist, one of the greatest pianists of the second half of the XX° Century. In addition, he offers to us the poorly nown pieces of the op. 32 of Schumann.

Great playing of course but I do prefer the Tchaikovsky hall recital, which I had on an LP for years (didn't know it came out on a CD) and which contains the imo greatest performance of Symphonic Etudes of all

@bill Bloggs - Brahms was an emphatic atheist. The Schumanns were not practising Lutherans. They did not go to church on Sundays.

Nothing began in Austria apart from Nazi murder. And you can’t even spell the composers’ names.
