I was in Leningrad in 1983, and saw this recital on Soviet television. It was broadcast in the spring, and was my consolation for never getting to hear Gilels live. He went on tour in the West not long after this recital, if I remember correctly, so I had no hope of hearing him in Russia. The Schumann made a deep impression on me then.
    Thanks for posting!

@@stonefireice6058 Sokolov just about gets to lace Gilels' boots, and then kiss them, the rest, not even remotely. However, Sokolov's playing is way too intricate and "clever" in my very humble opinion. I heard him once and it was, as usual, a short programme topped off with about 7 encores, whether they were warranted or not, which demeans the recital and plays to the crowd. I was underwhelmed.

Which pianist do you think has more humour? In my opinion, Richter is a bit more serious, but he has more overview of the whole compositions. We are talking about the highest level of pianists of all time. It was the best generation or the peak of the interpretation of the piano. 1920-1970. The development is more and more towards colder technique and perfectionism. Today they are also able to play all these difficulties, but not as deeply and with warm soul.
