Einfach wunderbar!
many thanks for this rare and wonderful post of my favorite pianist. Very different from the style I hear but the maestro makes it work. Very relaxed tempo for the Allemande is so eloquent.
It's more than 30 years since I heard this version...I had the LP. Thankyou to incontrario motu for giving us this wild, flesh and blood Bach. Academicians today might think Gilels is too romantic, too giving with the timing in the slow movements, but Bach wrote DANCES, didn't he. The gigue...well - fast (a sort of presto agitato molto) but with complete mastery of technique and with every note absolutely clear. A great performance, not from the past but for the future.
It is ok to be romantic in slow Bach movements. When called the greatest of theoreticians, he exclaimed: "My music is for the HEART" - the romantic of his time. When his music sounds tender and sensitive, it should be respected. I don´t know why dryness has been demanded in playing of Bachs music. He was nothing of the sort! Dances? Yes - suites have been made from dance forms in an artistic way since medieval time. It does not mean, that they are meant for the dance floor.
Here's the reason I believe it is not wrong to play this opening allegro "romantically": the music is, in its very essence, romantic. Nikolayeva saw that too.
Wow! Here's one in the eye for all those 'authentic' pianism freaks. Gilels is an 'old school' musician who produces a clearer, cleaner line than any dainty 'new' pianist. The interplay between the lines/hands is exemplary. I've never heard the Loure played so glowingly - a wonder. The Gigue...a little fast, yes, but what a thrilling ride. Thankyou, incontrario motu.
Like Mitsuko Uchida, Gilels knew perfectly when to use, and when not to use, rubato. The correct use of rubato can add wonderfully to the beauty of a piece, but unnecessary usage is not only self-indulgent, but ruins the flow and is irritating and disconcerting. Gilels may have been the greatest interpreter of music simply by not over-interpreting. Coupled, of course, with wonderful technique.
Just don’t compare him with Mitsuko, please. Gilels, as an artist, has proven to be in a much higher place. He is a next generation member of piano Olympus, right after Rubinstein, his mentor, and along with Richter, Arrau,
@@stonefireice6058 You may be right, and I dare say you have more understanding than I do. I was actually only referring to what I had heard myself I had in mind especially one particular piece by Mozart, in which the second movement was marked 'with expression''. I listened to recordings by three or four artists, and then to the one by Mitsuko. The other artists seemed to feel that the direction automatically called for rubato, but the wonderful Mitsuko played it in the full realisation that the expressiveness was already there in the lovely score as marked by the master himself. I've noticed Mitsuko's great playing of Schubert's music too. Again, she indulges in Schubert rather than in self-indulgence. I totally agree that Gilels was a wonderful pianist, and among the very best ever, and perhaps even THE best, if such a thing is quantifiable.
The most aggressive courante I’ve ever heard … almost comical 🤣. I love Gilels though don’t get me wrong and I’m not trying to invalidate the interpretation.
+PETR VAŘEKA I have made my thoughts. Most probably its about egoism. Either somebody is ill or bored. Either the person is ill and knows he will disturb all others or somebody takes a person with him which has absolutely no interest in this kind of music and the chance he will cough trough the whole recital is very high. In both cases its all about selfishness.
Bad diet of Stalin's spaghetti hoops caused ill health in a friend of mine, and killed her father. That is all they could buy for years, as one of their stock sources of carbohydrate. Not even dried spaghetti. Can you believe that? Never any meat for most of the year, and the collectives did not produce enough vegetables anyway. They literally scraped by, by visiting the country and collecting wild (and farmed) fruits and mushrooms, bringing them back and pickling them, or keeping them semi-fresh, with sugar (and without heating them) in jars, on their cold flat balconies. I ate some of this type of food, and it was wonderful. But this family had little money, and could only eat well when they collected by hand. We just have no idea.
The Minuet is a little mannered and the tempo rather slow. The general vision is too fuzzy, alas. I have played these so I know a little what I am talking about. Also the Minut speeds up. The articulation, piano and echo show us why Gould was necessary, and why, three years later, he was greeted with such acclaim. The Louree in fact is hard to get right and he doesn't, it's just a romantic smudge, terribly mannered with completely meaningless accents and agaogics. Pergaps we needed Gould for this optic, but it sounds somewhat incoherent and dated today.
There is nothing with wrong with playing the Gigue fast, provided you do not again iron out all the agogics, rush terribley. speed up, and misjudge the acoustic!

How do you feel about Vladimir Horowitz?
Gilels is a rare pianist who has both energy and elegance. He is miracle...in the history of classical music.

That Courante.....WOW! All in all - the number one rendition of this suite!

Such a miracle. Not only genius pianist but a great personality and artist who never forgot about the real world
Ok

Who rmade all the rigid rules for Bach playing? Not baroque musicians!

Thank you!
As soon as the very first note.....such a deep, poignant poetry

Genuine and pure・・。
It is also Gilels.
Extraordinary
Noble effort.
Who can play Bach so softly ?
Roman Sher?
What a treasure
Oh dear, the bronchial brigade is out in force.
It took Gilels all of two minutes to murder the gigue.
At least he did it quickly.
Bach romantized

Sarabanda gavotta loure are ok. The other are crazy. W.Backhaus play so speed.
