Gilels and Richter were the two pre-eminent pianists from Soviet Russia during the 1960s and 70s. Gilels was an unfailingly perceptive and wide ranging interpreter, also when it came to Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Scriabin there was very little to choose between these two great artists. Richter however could be erratic, unpredictable and controversial, yet when everything came together and he was in top form this unique visionary could hold audiences in rapt attention, then there was the extraordinary technical mastery he possessed.
This recital by Gilels is one of the truly memorable events from the second half of the last Century.

Si parece que fuese Beethoven tocando sus propias obras.
Arrau también las entiende pero, me parce, de otra manera.

@@MARTIN201199 if we would consider the age of recording, Horowitz is quite likely to be titled 'the greatest' by many people. However, we don't know what was before recording and we don't know what will come in the future. On top of that, at the end of the day art remains a subjective thing and everyone will have to pick their greatest for themselves

Over time, I have learned that the pianists and artists who are the most endearing to us are those that effectively convey what They have to say through the music, while honoring the composer's instructions in the score (if any), and the stylistic conventions that existed (if any) during that period (I recognize that this is debatable). Technical bravura and accuracy without any idea of what You want to say through the music is simply insipid.

@bill Bloggs then check out Trifonov, Abduraimov and Levit. They are modern pianists with good technique, but they all are very musical in their own way. I've listened to countless Rach 2&3 performances and I've found none that I like more than Trifonov's and Abduraimov's tone control is amazing, he might be on par with volodos and that's something. And Levit's Beethoven is so good, everything just sounds right. The big names taking the stage of general public (Lang Lang, yuja Wang and Valentina lisitsa) are unfortunately the most present, but when looking for art, one must be prepared to dig deeper
