    I was a great fan of Maestro Pollini since 1960 when he won Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Rest in Peace, dear Maestro!

    Incredible performance. Vibrant, full of energy, unbelievable what he does in dynamics and beautiful tone. This cannot be better - it is pollini at his best & a brilliant interpretation of Beethoven. Thank you for sharing this

      It's beyond perfect, it reaches that place where Beethoven lived. There are no words for it, all we can do is be grateful for it. Pollini was to the manor born. Thank you Maestro with all my heart. Your work is done and it was done well.

      La vie de musicien et les études nécessitent un logement insonorisé ou isolé. Coût : instruments. Études pas onéreuses. M.Pollini a souhaité que cette musique soit connue de tous et a joué dans des usines... en tout cas écouter au casque sans imposer aux voisins est possible partout. Même chez les très pauvres.
      Les sonos modernes c'est plus de décibels.
      Sur Internet c'est ouvert à tous. Merci éternel à Pollini pour tant de Musique. C'est du ciel. Du Paradis.

    La straordinaria maestria tecnica che dimostra Pollini in questa sua interpretazione non è altro, se così si può dire, che un riflesso della profondità di concezione, che espone un materiale sonoro rovente, al calor bianco, al fuoco di una intelligenza non solo passionale, ma anche profondamente analitica, che però non perde mai il filo di una stringente unità narrativa. Pollini ci accompagna per mano nei meandri di questo straordinario capolavoro, dove l'iridescente materiale musicale si sfrangia proprio per dimostrare la sua modernità; il sapiente uso del pedale (che appartiene in tutto e per tutto alla tecnica pianistica), ci trasporta in una dimensione molto più moderna, dove Beethoven pare aprire il cammino alla violenza materica di certa musica novecentesca. Il Beethoven di Pollini è semplicemente inesorabile nella sua logica architettonica e musicale; nessuno ha mai potuto superarlo su questo terreno. Si ascolti il secondo movimento, uno dei vertici dell'intera produzione beethoveniana; forse Richter è più poetico, forse Arrau è più (apparentemente) sensibile, ma nessuno ha la forza trascinante di Pollini, nessuno ci guida verso un mondo espressivo ignoto, verso il quale Beethoven si spinge in maniera del tutto cosciente. Pollini ce lo ricorda con la forza delle cose ineluttabili, così come è ineluttabile la violenza tellurica dell'ultimo movimento, letto in maniera quasi rapsodica ma sempre avendo bene in mente la struttura. In una parola: inarrivabile. La musica ha perso uno dei più grandi interpreti di tutti i tempi.

      Évidemment entièrement d'accord avec vous, vous devriez être critique dans une revue spécialisée en musique classique.
      J'ai toujours adoré Pollini depuis mon adolescence pour toutes les qualités que vous avez évoqué.
      L'un des plus grands maîtres du piano du 20ème siècle.

    Per me rimane la più bella esecuzione di questa sonata, nessuno riesce a darmi le stesse emozioni, il terzo movimento fa rimanere con il fiato sospeso fino alla fine.

    この演奏、東京文化会館に聴きに行っていました。弾き終わった時の会場は熱気に包まれ興奮さめやらぬ状態が続きました。今は聴いても凄い!としか言いようがありません。本当に凄かった。素晴らしい演奏でした。感動で拍手を止める事が出来ませんでした。

      Yes -- But Gilels comes close and perhaps equals. Richter too, and Rudolf Serkin, whom I heard play this sonata in Dallas in 1971.

      Dont forget Arrau... Gilels, Richter, Serkin and really almost all the XX century pianists are several steps below the Maestro.

    Now I see why Rubinstein said he was beat. Pollini takes a page out of Beethoven and actually plays it at tempo, he never bothers with the barline, and he plays all the passages together as they are one better than any pianist I have ever heard.

    C'est la meilleure version. C'est incontestable voyons ! Quelle émotion ! C'est de la PURE énergie ! Une passion indicible s'est emparée de cet homme aux doigts d'or, mais au contraire du légendaire Midas, nous voici dans une oeuvre d'or non figée et authentique, vouée à se nourrir d'elle-même pour l'éternité !

      Effectivement cette interprétation est très belle, sinon extraordinaire, mais je pense qu'il y a mieux. En effet, Pollini, bien qu'ayant une sonorité très impressionnante, prend le rythme peut-être un peu trop au sérieux, négligeant l'aspect contemplatif ( rappelons qu'il s'agit de l'Appassionata ) relatif à cette oeuvre. Je conviens qu'Arrau ( un public à Stockholm que l'on trouve chez Ica ) ou que Serkin ( en studio ) peuvent paraître un peu académique, mais les interprétations de Sofronitsky ou de Kerer sont très originales et animées.

    Absolutely ideal interpretation of the Appassionata Sonata. Couldn't really be bettered, in my opinion. (Wonder what those 60 thumbs down are about!)

      Prabhudhas, I have put my thumb down some seconds ago, and I regret I could put just one :-) I don't like this rendition at all. I have many objections, I just write you one: at about 8:45 you have an instance of the "prokofievization" of Beethoven: when Pollini falls into the temptation of showing off his technique, quite often the result is this kind of musical deformation. Anyway, you love this interpretation, I hate it, and, my friend, probably we're both right :-) Best wishes

    El mas hondo tormento expuesto en esta obra, parte el alma del que la escucha......También se percibe valor y fuerza,sentimos que Beethoven en las profundidades del sufrimiento y el caos emocional, se tambalea, pero sigue en pie, y si acaso se cae, se levanta...Un espíritu fuerte frente al abismo...

      The 23rd sonata is very well served by the discography (live too). Arrau's interpretation at Ica in Stockholm is particularly noteworthy. But Rudolf Serkin, Wilhelm Kempff and Vladimir Sofronitsky are also references. Pollini's interpretation is excellent, albeit a little "skinny" sound from time to time. In little known versions we can mention Kerer or Gould, kinds of UFOs.

      Just a Little too fast. The Tempo chosen by RICHTER Is Better.
