@@smkthomas2 "Antarctica is a ring" Such a great example of an answer based on poor knowledge. And one that is so easy to disprove, would have been proven centuries ago if that were true. From any southern hemisphere location (fudge many northern ones as well) simply leave going direct west / east at respective bearing 270 / 90 and then go perfectly straight never changing course and you would run into Antarctica if that were true. Yet that never happens in reality. Not counting the whole issue with southern pole is at one fixed point .. and yes in southern hemisphere a compass points to south pole as any magnaprobe will show.

When I was in the Army we once loaded our tanks and other vehicles on a Merchant Marine transport at the port in Beaumont, TX. Some of us were screened and selected to ride on the boat all the way across to our final destination *with* a full compliment of our standard weaponry - in my case an M16 rifle & an M9 pistol - because we had to go around the cape and all the way up into an undisclosed port in the Middle East. The MM vessel itself was not armed so we were. Boat was U.S.-flagged and we would have given any pirates "The Full Les Grossman" treatment had any dared come near us. Once we got near Somalia we went to constant armed watches with night-vision devices and a new-fangled device at the time called a "FLIR". They selected me because I grew up on the coast of North Carolina and had been on and around boats most of the time since I was 5 years old. Soldiers who drive and gun tanks tend to make for good boat crew because they generally don't get seasick from all the time inside a moving tank looking through a tiny gunner sight or driver's vision block.
The commenter was probably in the gun toting southern US and hates New Yorkers, but loves quoting them if it helps their gun argument. We need better education in my country 😬
During my days skippering large yachts I was often accompanying the owners to clubs, casinos (not really my thing), dinner, or days out investigating sights. This though was limited to times when the owners were aboard alone, once friends and family were on scene things would revert to normal. And, yes, with one of the owners, his mistress was a regular guest, stunning creature.
If you’re staying at home you should put out a Q&A video a day. Or at least live stream them. Why not. Easy money for you while at home and we’d all love it 🙏🏼

I've been hearing Palma de Mallorca and the balearic islands are a increasingly popular superyacht desination, taking business away from the Cote d'Azur with visits and moorings. In your opinion, are the balearic islands a better destination? If so, what does the riviera need to step up to remain No. 1? Great videos as always!
I don't know superyachts or that world, but can tell you that places like Ibiza cater well for very high-net-worth people. There is the infrastructure from ports to fashion brand shops on shore, very high quality dining etc. Ibiza still likes to see itself through a hippy, laid-back place which it is, but can also cater to the top end. Santa Eularia is the richest parish in Spain. The riviera was no1 in the 70s. Nice is nice.
Good Q&A episode. One query re staffing a super yacht. How easy is it to find permanent staff for an owner use only yacht as opposed to the more seasonal staffing of a yacht primarily used for charter with the added bonus of tips? Even in the U.S., employers generally have policies forbidding possession of a firearm on company property(unless the nature of the job requires it i.e. armed security). I would be very surprised if this did not extend to merchant vessels and yachts.
Or perhaps the firearm question came from someone who isn't a coward willing to leave themselves, loved ones and possessions to be robbed, raped, murdered, kidnapped, stolen and/or otherwise victimised by giving up their right to defend themselves. It's natural law for every living thing to defend itself. Why wouldn't every human want that instead if leaving it to some distant or unresponsive or slow to respond so-called authority. When you allow domination, you will be dominated.

Don't know if anyone answered you but yes to all your questions. The people that own or charter these vessels are all high profile and known in some way or another although friends of the principal guest/owner might not always be. Some have bodyguards but not all and they tend to be mostly on their own mission ensuring that they are doing their job but interactions are quite friendly and relaxed with them generally as they are staff of the owners same as we are.
Keep making new videos, anything you can cook up with extra footage you got? These videos are great for passing the time with the current situation we are in.
How many ex-military personnel do you see working on yachts? And does their previous military training and experience provide advantages over crew who came from a more conventional path?
On my vessel of 9 crew 2 are ex military. We run into them from time to time. From experience these people are the best to work with. They usually have a better work ethic and less drama and used to living and working in close proximity to others. Plus they have better banter. If I had a choice I would hire more.

I'm in NZ & we're 5 days into a 4 week (minimum) lockdown. We have gone really early in our infection cycle to try and avoid the terrible things happening in other countries. I was due for a haircut 3 days after our LD started so I got my son to give me my first ever #2 buzz cut on day 1 of the LD & challenged my 3 brothers to do the same 😆 Two of them have upped the ante, both have had #1's and one shaved off his prized beard. We truly enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them. We did an experiment on board a ship recently with different mineral waters, (Volvic, Evian, Acqua Panna) and the ships reverse osmosis water and the ships water won! It tasted the best.
Not surprising, since reverse osmosis watermakers make far purer water than anything bottled. I have literally tested this with the watermaker's special water purity measurement instruments.

First of I can imagine that the first allegiance of any crew member is to the owner in any situation including having his mistress on board and secondly its hard to imagine they would risk having their security unnarmed.
From a retired Navy man, the difference between a good haircut and a bad one is about three weeks. Give it a shot if it turns out bad she be very apologetic, ha ha.

I can't comment on this specifically, but basically it's always a question of supply and demand. Supercars with a long waiting list are frequently sold on for far in excess of their list price. Personally I've seen this first hand on several occasions, back in 1973, I purchased a car in need of attention for £160, if I still had the same car today in the same condition, I could add 3 extra 0 to the price and have a queue willing to buy it.
Not saying names but my sister was a nanny for a family in the U.S. who are worth billions. A few years after she quit her former boss was lost at sea after falling overboard, but it was before CCTV was a thing, may have saved his life. A hint about the family, they are one of the largest agricultural companies in the world.
On AIS, you can sometimes see that vessel is marked as having "Armed guards aboard". Octopus had that marking on AIS. Would think that type of marking on AIS would be very important while cruising off Somalia while coming out of the Suez, or cruising through the Philipine sea, where Piracy is still a big problem

Hi yes let her cut your hair, if she messed up it will grow back do it sooner so if she does mess up you have more time for if to grow back. I am from Bermuda have you ever been here? If a super yacht or sports fishing boat comes her with guns on bored the custom takes them for the time they are here and they get them back when they leave.

These legal issues depend HUGELY on the flag country and the choices the owner makes (How to handle/outsource the HR and weither to get insurance). Some flag countries require some form of insurance, others don't. Some owners are dicks, some owners are good people when it comes to insurance. It has nothing to do with yachting really: It's just bussiness and you are their employee. Some bosses have more safeguards and insurances than others do. Certainly if you take into account things like flag country of the boats and different regulations. But the "other case" you list, isn't that black and white. He was supposedly drunk climbing into the boat at night and wasn't insured to do so nor did he comply to any safety instruction.
Have you worked on anything that would qualify as expedition yacht? Like a yacht with an ice rating. If so, how was that different from "usual" yachts? Better/worse quarters? Different type of owner? Different type of guests?
I was in the Navy. I used to hunt submarines. Sonar shadows prove flat earth. So too does the average elevation of Antarctica. It’s cool though. No one needs you to believe. But the reason why they have answers for everything is because they care about the shape of our world and they looked closer. Great channel regardless. Cheers
Have you heard of any issues that have occured when you cruises through the Suez canal, like Bribary with Cigarettes, alchohol drink, and cash, just for the guys that transit with the yacht to do their job and lead you through the canal. I have heard of stories of the guys that transit with the yacht bursting in uninvited into the lounge area and try to sell carpets to the owner.
I thought I would have a laugh at the bloke, worried about not having guns on board, that is definetly not the place to have them, bullets and fiberglass don't mix. And yes he would have to be a gun toting American.

Yeah yogi if I remember right was weird. Lots of suspect things happened, wasn’t a ship stability issue. It had just left the factory after a snagging list of repairs. By the distance covered they ran the engines full speed and they started to overheat. The engineer went to phone the captain to cut the engines but the fixed line phone wasn’t working and despite a full suite of radios onboard, the engineer wasn’t carrying one. It caused both engines to shut down (as designed) which was just the start of the issues.

Very well done dancing around the question about multiple ladies on the ship, I would not want to answer that question also. I believe that the owner would have his "ducks in a row" and know how to manage this situation well.
Your answers were very sincere, which cannot be said of the questions. I totally agree with the way you handled it. As to firearms, there is no European country that will allow firearms aboard a ship, except for hunting purposes. In fact, just having a pistol on board will get you a 6 months jail-sentence in most European countries.
Hi eSysman, thanks for another great and informative video! I have some questions, hope you're willing to answer: 1) I used to own a boat. Ok, it was a 7m one, but still ... Anyways, I loved to operate it myself, and if I had 'crew' on board (friends and family mostly) they would just sit back and relax most of the time. Do yacht owners like to drive the boat themselves? Are they allowed to (under supervision of a licensed captain, if necessary)? 2) Do crew members like to own their own boats? I can imagine they hardly have any time for it, and off-season the weather might be an issue. Still, I hope working on a boat (yacht) for a living does not take away the relaxing pleasure of operating your own, and go wherever and whenever you please... Thanks!
On the shoes question - its also tradition. Sailors rarely wore shoes. Shoes were noisy on deck and feet gripped better on rat-lines. Decks were traditionally made of teak and feet gripped really well on it. Shoes not required.
There's a difference betw International Waters (which the attorney was most prob referring to) & foreign jurisdictions (countries) which is what the video was referring to. When the yacht is docked in a foreign jurisdiction, I would imagine people can only take off board what is locally legal.
@@raheesom Once a yacht clears into a country and is asked "Do you have any firearms and ammunition to declare?" they must do so and will likely be told to inventory the guns and every round of ammunition and put it all into bond at the local police station. If the question is not asked but the law does not allow a yacht to carry firearms once cleared in, it is still illegal not to volunteer the information. Any subsequent boarding and search that uncovers such contraband may result in the captain and owner being arrested and the boat impounded. Ask me how I know - I have sailed over 50,000nm (about twice the distance around the world) as owner and captain and cleared into innumerable countries. Yes, some owners take the risk and hide their guns, but there are many who are now in jail in Mexico or even more unsavory slammer places spending all their money on lawyers.
what happens if the crew get propositioned? all those cute crew members must be for a reason, breach of contract, consenting adults, big extra tip for crew?

I've been hearing Palma de Mallorca and the balearic islands are a increasingly popular superyacht desination, taking business away from the Cote d'Azur with visits and moorings.

I don't know superyachts or that world, but can tell you that places like Ibiza cater well for very high-net-worth people. There is the infrastructure from ports to fashion brand shops on shore, very high quality dining etc. Ibiza still likes to see itself through a hippy, laid-back place which it is, but can also cater to the top end. Santa Eularia is the richest parish in Spain. The riviera was no1 in the 70s. Nice is nice.

Even in the U.S., employers generally have policies forbidding possession of a firearm on company property(unless the nature of the job requires it i.e. armed security). I would be very surprised if this did not extend to merchant vessels and yachts.
Or perhaps the firearm question came from someone who isn't a coward willing to leave themselves, loved ones and possessions to be robbed, raped, murdered, kidnapped, stolen and/or otherwise victimised by giving up their right to defend themselves. It's natural law for every living thing to defend itself. Why wouldn't every human want that instead if leaving it to some distant or unresponsive or slow to respond so-called authority. When you allow domination, you will be dominated.
I like how the crew quarters shrink as the boat gets bigger. Shows the wonderful respect the plutocrat class has for their minions.

Don't know if anyone answered you but yes to all your questions. The people that own or charter these vessels are all high profile and known in some way or another although friends of the principal guest/owner might not always be. Some have bodyguards but not all and they tend to be mostly on their own mission ensuring that they are doing their job but interactions are quite friendly and relaxed with them generally as they are staff of the owners same as we are.

How many ex-military personnel do you see working on yachts? And does their previous military training and experience provide advantages over crew who came from a more conventional path?
On my vessel of 9 crew 2 are ex military. We run into them from time to time. From experience these people are the best to work with. They usually have a better work ethic and less drama and used to living and working in close proximity to others. Plus they have better banter.
If I had a choice I would hire more.

I have a haircut story for yiu ... I'm in NZ & we're 5 days into a 4 week (minimum) lockdown. We have gone really early in our infection cycle to try and avoid the terrible things happening in other countries. I was due for a haircut 3 days after our LD started so I got my son to give me my first ever #2 buzz cut on day 1 of the LD & challenged my 3 brothers to do the same 😆
Two of them have upped the ante, both have had #1's and one shaved off his prized beard. Sadly the other one has wimped out.

We truly enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them. We did an experiment on board a ship recently with different mineral waters, (Volvic, Evian, Acqua Panna) and the ships reverse osmosis water and the ships water won! It tasted the best.

Not surprising, since reverse osmosis watermakers make far purer water than anything bottled. I have literally tested this with the watermaker's special water purity measurement instruments.

First of I can imagine that the first allegiance of any crew member is to the owner in any situation including having his mistress on board and secondly its hard to imagine they would risk having their security unnarmed.

Intro: I am a keen virtual mariner with no hands-on yachting experience. I am seriously considering purchasing a yacht to live aboard six to nine months a year. I might charter it out when not in use I will moor in Fort Lauderdale, Bahamas or Cayman Islands. I have been actively researching for a year. I do not plan to do any major cruising any time soon. Only the occasional outing when the weather cooperates. I will use the boat primarily for entertaining and business. I have looked at used ('previously enjoyed' seems to be the euphemism these days) 50 to 120' Sunreef and Mangusta yachts. I like their design, attention to detail and elegance. My budget for purchasing is $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 USD.

I can't comment on this specifically, but basically it's always a question of supply and demand. Supercars with a long waiting list are frequently sold on for far in excess of their list price. Personally I've seen this first hand on several occasions, back in 1973, I purchased a car in need of attention for £160, if I still had the same car today in the same condition, I could add 3 extra 0 to the price and have a queue willing to buy it.
Not saying names but my sister was a nanny for a family in the U.S. who are worth billions. A few years after she quit her former boss was lost at sea after falling overboard, but it was before CCTV was a thing, may have saved his life. A hint about the family, they are one of the largest agricultural companies in the world.

On AIS, you can sometimes see that vessel is marked as having "Armed guards aboard". Octopus had that marking on AIS. Would think that type of marking on AIS would be very important while cruising off Somalia while coming out of the Suez, or cruising through the Philipine sea, where Piracy is still a big problem

Hi yes let her cut your hair, if she messed up it will grow back do it sooner so if she does mess up you have more time for if to grow back. I am from Bermuda have you ever been here? If a super yacht or sports fishing boat comes her with guns on bored the custom takes them for the time they are here and they get them back when they leave.

These legal issues depend HUGELY on the flag country and the choices the owner makes (How to handle/outsource the HR and weither to get insurance).
Some flag countries require some form of insurance, others don't. Some owners are dicks, some owners are good people when it comes to insurance.
It has nothing to do with yachting really: It's just bussiness and you are their employee. Some bosses have more safeguards and insurances than others do. Certainly if you take into account things like flag country of the boats and different regulations.
But the "other case" you list, isn't that black and white. He was supposedly drunk climbing into the boat at night and wasn't insured to do so nor did he comply to any safety instruction.
Have you worked on anything that would qualify as expedition yacht? Like a yacht with an ice rating. If so, how was that different from "usual" yachts? Better/worse quarters? Different type of owner? Different type of guests?
Have you ever encountered freak waves or freak wave holes, and how can you avoid them?

I was in the Navy. I used to hunt submarines. Sonar shadows prove flat earth. So too does the average elevation of Antarctica. It’s cool though. No one needs you to believe. Have you heard of any issues that have occured when you cruises through the Suez canal, like Bribary with Cigarettes, alchohol drink, and cash, just for the guys that transit with the yacht to do their job and lead you through the canal. I have heard of stories of the guys that transit with the yacht bursting in uninvited into the lounge area and try to sell carpets to the owner.

Yeah yogi if I remember right was weird. Lots of suspect things happened, wasn’t a ship stability issue. It had just left the factory after a snagging list of repairs. By the distance covered they ran the engines full speed and they started to overheat. The engineer went to phone the captain to cut the engines but the fixed line phone wasn’t working and despite a full suite of radios onboard, the engineer wasn’t carrying one. It caused both engines to shut down (as designed) which was just the start of the issues.
I’ve done a full series on this.

European country that will allow firearms aboard a ship, except for hunting purposes. In fact, just having a pistol on board will get you a 6 months
jail-sentence in most European countries.

1) I used to own a boat. Ok, it was a 7m one, but still ... Anyways, I loved to operate it myself, and if I had 'crew' on board (friends and family mostly) they would just sit back and relax most of the time. Do yacht owners like to drive the boat themselves? Are they allowed to (under supervision of a licensed captain, if necessary)?
2) Do crew members like to own their own boats? I can imagine they hardly have any time for it, and off-season the weather might be an issue. Still, I hope working on a boat (yacht) for a living does not take away the relaxing pleasure of operating your own, and go wherever and whenever you please...

On the shoes question - its also tradition. Sailors rarely wore shoes. Shoes were noisy on deck and feet gripped better on rat-lines. Decks were traditionally made of teak and feet gripped really well on it. Shoes not required.

That’s BS. You are subject to the laws of whichever country you dock in for fuel etc. Most countries don’t allow private firearms.
There's a difference betw International Waters (which the attorney was most prob referring to) & foreign jurisdictions (countries) which is what the video was referring to. When the yacht is docked in a foreign jurisdiction, I would imagine people can only take off board what is locally legal.
@@raheesom Once a yacht clears into a country and is asked "Do you have any firearms and ammunition to declare?" they must do so and will likely be told to inventory the guns and every round of ammunition and put it all into bond at the local police station. If the question is not asked but the law does not allow a yacht to carry firearms once cleared in, it is still illegal not to volunteer the information. Any subsequent boarding and search that uncovers such contraband may result in the captain and owner being arrested and the boat impounded. Ask me how I know - I have sailed over 50,000nm (about twice the distance around the world) as owner and captain and cleared into innumerable countries. Yes, some owners take the risk and hide their guns, but there are many who are now in jail in Mexico or even more unsavory slammer places spending all their money on lawyers.
