The original early-to-mid-'80s run of GI Joe toys were outstanding! I remember getting the V.A.M.P. with its driver Clutch. I later got the A-10-inspired Cobra Rattler and a number of others, including the Transportable Tactical Battle Platform (the oil rig-looking thing). Most of my originals were destroyed, lost, or stolen over the years, but I started buying them again when I got back from Iraq nearly 20 years ago. At the time, the 3-3/4" figures were mostly relegated to Family Dollar stores, sold as individual figures with maybe a rifle or other accessory for $2 or so. I think the H.A.V.O.C., released in 1986, was where GI Joe really started to jump the shark, though I personally enjoyed that toy. The following year I got the Cobra Mamba, in all its purple glory. Before long we were nearing the '90s and everything started getting extra sci-fi, with neon colors, extremely impractical designs, and a definite move away from the quasi-realistic early days. Growing up in the '80s was nice, and GI Joe made many of us want to join the military at an early age. Guys like me, coming from a tradition of military service, simply couldn't wait to join and maybe become a Ranger like Beachhead, a Green Beret like Flint or Lt. Falcon, a Marine like Gung Ho, or even a Sailor like Shipwreck (another personal favorite). I went regular Infantry and, looking back at old GI Joe file cards I see, I'm amazed at two things: the level of detail they could fit on a tiny piece of cardboard, and the relatively low rank of many (E-4 to E-5) as well as the lack of promotions for those characters who were released year after year. I mean, look at Scarlett, one of the original Joes from 1982. She spent at least 28 years as an E-5, still at that rank in 2010: www.yojoe.com/action/10/scarlett13.shtml. At least you made it. I blew my ankle out in basic when a big dude fell off the climbing wall, I just lowered myself down and was about to move when I thought I got attacked by a falling bear. He pulled my boot and my sock off ( he recognized a badly broken ankle when he saw it). At the medical clinic on the base they determined the break was serious and needed surgery. Took 2 plates and 4 pins to hold it together. Doctor told me that the ankle already had a stress fracture and that its breaking seriously was just a matter of time.
