sorry dude - The A-10 isn't survivable on a modern battlefield (attempting to armor an aircraft is a fools game). Their current use is because they are a decent bomb truck with relatively long loiter time, but they have inferior optics and electronics to a drone, which also has a much greater loiter time (although they can't operate in a contested airspace), and greatly inferior payloads and loiter time compared to a B-1, which can actually operate in a contested airspace. Also the gun is bloody useless. To further support this idea, I'd like to point out that the US pulled their A-10s off of attacking the Iraqi Republican Guard, in the first gulf war simply because they were losing too many.

The problem is the US Military does not have a good replacement for the A-10's long-loiter CAS capability, and the US Air Force has shown little interest in procuring one. The alternatives all have issues: 1) Drones -- While having loitering and payload capability, the ones being proposed have poor performance and must maintain high-altitude. The key issue is they are all remotely controlled from vast distances, which means any number of electronic countermeasures can be used against them. 2) Heavy Bombers -- Has loitering and payload capability, but likewise have poor overall performance, must maintain high altitude, and are rather easily detected and countered when loitering. The USAF also has shown little interest in procuring a low-cost aircraft, and has been letting the current fleet of B-52s and B1B's atrophy. 3) Highspeed Fighter-Bombers/Multirole Aircraft -- High performance and modern electronics, but have poor loitering capability. They are also much more expensive, require a lot of maintenance and support, and are designed for high-speed and high altitude, which (while making them great for strike missions) makes them poor for cases where they need to stay on-station and CAS needs to be performed at lower altitudes and visual confirmation. I can understand the USAF not wanting to upgrade the remaining A-10 airframes with better or modern electronics, but at least propose a project to replace the high loiter time, low altitude, high payload capability with the ability to perform visual attacks. Not just say "my latest toy can do the job -- give me more money for that please"
Flying Hueys back in the US at Fort Hood, Texas in the late 70's, the Air Force would often use our artillery/bombing range. The Air Force jockeys would surprise us by flying UNDERNEATH us with the then new A10 at less than 100 feet of altitude. Even more impressive was the Air National Guard doing that with old F100 Super Sabres ! My sister in the Air Force was a crew chief on F15s and the A10 and loved the A10
When I was a kid in scouts these things would use us for target practice in the Adirondacks. We'd be out in our canoes and they would swoop in at less than 100m off the deck and give us a great thrill!
The A-10 has also been used as a quick mission low altitude bomber. Being able to send tactical bombs in a tight group with the agility closer to a fighter.
the first time i saw a Warhog was in the classic RTS game command and conquer, flown by GDI as a mission asset that would drop napalm bombs that could kill Infantry and seriously damage building and base defenses
The A-10 is going to be replaced by F-35A's but according to recent USAF training documents, the pilots assigned to these squadrons will not be required to be proficient in CAS to mentain flight status and no CAS training flights are scheduled as part of their yearly training flight schedule.

One thing about the positioning of the Aircraft's Engines. When a jet engine gets hit - it can sometimes come apart, slinging fan blades about. By putting the Engines off in their own little pods - this reduces the negative impact of the engine coming apart or catching fire on the rest of the aircraft, unlike engines which are inside the aircraft's fuselage. Another aspect of the A-10's history - is that while - yes - the aircraft is beloved by many for saving their asses - including it's air crew - the Air Force itself hates it and has tried to get rid of it several times. The Air Force has always preferred an image of a Service that goes after Strategic Targets to Win Wars - and doesn't really get into the grubby existence of people on or near the ground. It really should be owned by the Army - who would appreciate it - BUT - in the Forming of the _"Air Force"_ it took all the Fixed Wing aircraft away from the Army - so that the Army is only allowed to have Helicopters. .
I still like the Chayenne more. Can't help it, it's a helicopter, way more reasonable for ground support, especially considering the landing/takeoff and loitering. Well, corruption at work I guess.
Pretty much an open secret in the Air Force that this aircraft is TERRIBLE at its reassigned task--close air support. It is simply NOT what this aircraft was designed for; it was made in anticipation of the inevitable tank invasion of northwestern Europe. To fly up and down the Fulda gap and other choke points strafing endless columns of T-72s. It was not in any way designed for pinpoint defense and assistance of ground troops; and two major design features of the air frame bear this out. 1: It only has one operator; this means that the pilot not only has to fly the aircraft, but assess the information he is receiving from soldiers that are under fire. 2: This plane has none of the advanced imaging of the Apache, and in many cases the pilot literally carries binoculars so they can attempt to scan the area and assess the situation they are flying into--at 300mph or so. And then there's the mighty GAU-8--a weapon whose accuracy is measured in 12-meter increments. What that means is that any hit within a 12-meter radius is reported as an accurate hit; that's about the length of a city bus in any direction. And that's an accurate shot--rare in combat conditions, in a plane that offers little isolation or mitigation of the massive recoil. Simply, this aircraft killed more of its own soldiers than any other aircraft in Desert Storm. But hey, big gun go BRRRRRRRT
You are, to be blunt, full of shit! 1. I've seen the A-10 in action in Desert Storm AND OIF III. It killed tanks, APC's and just about anything else it shot at with the 30mm, bombs and missiles 2. The Air Force brass hates both the Army and the CAS mission. But since the dissolution of the SU, that's the combat game around for them. 3. Every man I've talked to who actually flew the aircraft, IN COMBAT, loves the aircraft. Their opinion is far more relevant than yours! 😂😂😂
0:28 Indeed, the A-10's one of my Go-To when the mission consists mostly of Ground Targets. Even when I have access to better planes, I still prefer the A-10 (such as that in AC7, even after unlocking the SU-34, I still go back to the A-10) Another reason was 'cause in H.A.W.X 1, when I fought against an SU-37 with the A-10, it's Avenger tore the opponent to sh--. ('course, that player ragequit right after the kill XD)
I hate that in AC4 you couldn't manually switch to the Gun Reticle in the nighttime A-10 mission. "Screw it, might as well load for more missiles," I thought, and chose the unlocked F-15E. I didn't know there would be four enemy A-10s to deal with in the end. I had a hell of a time splashing them in the dark because I couldn't turn with them.
I can't see why we would go back to using prop driven planes that are slower and probably less resilient to ground fire when you have a perfectly good solution that's already in use
@@mikebaird6788 you can use F-16s and drop bombs, missiles form safe distance and never fly low and being exposed to small arms fire, MANPADS and most of all, SPAAW.
A fantastic beast of a plane! It's impact is best described by legendary author Tom Clancy (on the commentary track of "the Sum of all Fears"): "Don't run. You'll just die tired."
I read somewhere that the gun was developed first to destroy Russian tanks, they attempted to mount the gun on other airframes but was unsuccessful. The A10 from what I read was built around the gun. If anyone has any more info on that please chime in.
indeed the gun was made to destroy russian tanks, but what a 10 fans never mention is that it failed to do that role... the live fire test showed it to be ineffective to useless at taking out the russian tanks of that era, which is why the a10 carries around an oversized gun which is too slow firing to be effective against troops

Actually, *ITS A FLYING GUN!*
no its flying warcrime
The problem is the US Military does not have a good replacement for the A-10's long-loiter CAS capability, and the US Air Force has shown little interest in procuring one. The alternatives all have issues:
1) Drones -- While having loitering and payload capability, the ones being proposed have poor performance and must maintain high-altitude.
Not just say "my latest toy can do the job -- give me more money for that please"
the F-35 is planned to replace it. It's actually more expensive to modernize the A-10 than to just make an F-35
Very informative video, you're basically the US version of Mark Felton Productions.
Great video. Thanks for creating this. My very favorite aircraft and I still learned quite a few things :)
That brrrrrrt
sound is very beautiful
Nine British soldiers were also killed by A10s on 26th February 1991 during the Liberation of Kuwait. It caused a bit of a stink at the time.
And an F-15 killed US soldiers when it shot down an American UH-61 Blackhawk in Iraq.
Also dropped a bomb on journalists in Iraq
@@darrenshaw6724ropping a bomb on journos is a bad thing?
@@johnolive3425How else we gonna get cool war photos and videos?

There’s precious little about the A10 in the movies in this clip
Brrrrrrttt !!!
The Flying Machine Gun !!!
My sister in the Air Force was a crew chief on F15s and the A10 and loved the A10
wait the air force national guard still used F-100 Super Sabers at the time?
never understood the "ugly" tag it has.. visually it looks mean and capable ,not to mention cool as ice
How else than "visually" can anything look?
When some amateur says "If It LokS gOoD IT is gOOD" I point them to the A10. And the PBY Catalina.
sadly it only visually looks capable and isnt actually so
the clip from bo time gaming was perfect!
Bo's the man
When I was a kid in scouts these things would use us for target practice in the Adirondacks. We'd be out in our canoes and they would swoop in at less than 100m off the deck and give us a great thrill!
ooooo, sounds like fun!
I have always loved this air craft. Everything about it says kicking a$$ and taking names
Bo: "im okay, im okay"
Sturmling: "are you"
Bo: "no"
The A-10 has also been used as a quick mission low altitude bomber. Being able to send tactical bombs in a tight group with the agility closer to a fighter.
the first time i saw a Warhog was in the classic RTS game command and conquer, flown by GDI as a mission asset that would drop napalm bombs that could kill Infantry and seriously damage building and base defenses
Surprised this video never brought up the YA-10B Night/All Weather two seater that was tested. Badass and little known piece of A-10 history.
Fairchild built it at their own expense as a proof of concept aircraft.
Hey, can you do a video on the AC-130 ?
I will!
Perfect video 👍🏻
Dude knows Jormungand? Good taste 👌
I can't believe the government responded to the friendly-fire incidents with skill issue
That and slowly replacing some roles the A-10 would've done with other planes
10:45 you can hear how much he fucked up in his voice lol. It’s unfortunate that stuff like that happens…
5:18 had me dying 😂
The A-10 is going to be replaced by F-35A's but according to recent USAF training documents, the pilots assigned to these squadrons will not be required to be proficient in CAS to mentain flight status and no CAS training flights are scheduled as part of their yearly training flight schedule.

Don't forget that an autobot Named Power glide transforms into The A10 in the g1 cartoon,

Nice! Could you make about the Lockheed F-104, the infamous Sargfighter?
A10 war hog can always still be seen with air national guard attack plane units that can always rip holes in other tank units and the friendly tank units can always trust the a 10 planes as well and the Arizona boneyard can always still find parts to the other planes flying
Anytime at a fog of war even on the ground when there firing rounds of bullets and shells it will always hit friends and enemies as well
@@danzmitrovich6250 Yea but compare to other aircraft, it's night and day on how many friendly fire incidents with the A-10 mostly due to lack of radar and such with the most famous being a pilot mistaking a Warrior IFV for a Russian truck.
That is very true even in the battleships during the day and night raids mission on the island campaign battles as well
@Calvino Kristanto When your job is to hit enemy units that are in direct contact with friendly units. friendly fire is always going to be a risk
The realization is friendly fire can always happen with the gis in enemy gear just to mess with there heads to shutdown there own operations in under cover top secret military ops mission
The hottest noise to hear in the sky.
Anyone else get Fortunate Son vibes from the We Were Soldiers clip? 🤔😃
Strong work as always brother man
What were those old 90's opened up A10 + 80's europe/90's Middle East clips from? Would love some more quality A10 content

I find it amazing when you find out the age of the jets just like F15 F16 F18 etc I am getting really old @61 LOL
GIJoe made me believe for a long time these planes had a vertical takeoff
A nice plain , i knew it from the GI Joe toy line.
I like how he used bo time gaming clip of his A-10 double crash lol
Hearing "BRRRRRRTTTT" while ur fighting against U.S is probably the most nightmarish thing bruh.. Once u hear that u know ur fate 💀💀
its just as bad for the friendly troops who have to know its a very good chance they will also die because its a garbage gun and plane thats killed more friendlies than all other us planes combined
CN you talk about the Apache helicopter?
It really should be owned by the Army - who would appreciate it - BUT - in the Forming of the _"Air Force"_ it took all the Fixed Wing aircraft away from the Army - so that the Army is only allowed to have Helicopters.
.
Except for transports.
I still like the Chayenne more. Can't help it, it's a helicopter, way more reasonable for ground support, especially considering the landing/takeoff and loitering. Well, corruption at work I guess.

One of the first scenes of “Jarhead” was an A-10 attack. The sound of the 30mm was sooo bad, but the rest of the movie was quite decent.
Please do a video on the Su-25
Why completely skip the part about the A-10 being made for one thing, that it is actually pretty inferior at. Tank killing....
actually its not inferior at that job
its useless at it
i like how you use video game footage as well as movie footage not like other channels that only use real footage
It killed tanks, APC's and just about anything else it shot at with the 30mm, bombs and missiles
2. The Air Force brass hates both the Army and the CAS mission. But since the dissolution of the SU, that's the combat game around for them.
3. Every man I've talked to who actually flew the aircraft, IN COMBAT, loves the aircraft.
Their opinion is far more relevant than yours! 😂😂😂
Any chance of us getting a littlebird edition of in the movies?
Absolutely. Will be a fun project.
@Johnny Johnson YO lesgooo! Always a pleasure to watch 🙏
What they need is a middle-ground aircraft between the A10 and the AC130.
Hey!
That's a mod of HBS battletech.
I miss that game.
Americas favorite flying gun
PRAISE THE GOD OF THE SKY!
0:28 Indeed, the A-10's one of my Go-To when the mission consists mostly of Ground Targets.
Even when I have access to better planes, I still prefer the A-10 (such as that in AC7, even after unlocking the SU-34, I still go back to the A-10)
Another reason was 'cause in H.A.W.X 1, when I fought against an SU-37 with the A-10, it's Avenger tore the opponent to sh--. ('course, that player ragequit right after the kill XD)
No one cares
@@dmoney8602 And yet here you are.
VTOL version of an A-10 like Cobra had would be AWESOME!! Ultimate local area Rapid response aircraft!
my favorite plane ever
5:18 Hahaha made my day! thanks
I can't see why we would go back to using prop driven planes that are slower and probably less resilient to ground fire when you have a perfectly good solution that's already in use
They are a lot cheaper. Sth the government is most interested in.
@@Iauchmitschlauch I can see that but you need to factor in everything safety included
@@mikebaird6788 you can use F-16s and drop bombs, missiles form safe distance and never fly low and being exposed to small arms fire, MANPADS and most of all, SPAAW.
@@mikebaird6788 safety? you mean the one on the a10 that cant defend it against anything?
A fantastic beast of a plane! It's impact is best described by legendary author Tom Clancy (on the commentary track of "the Sum of all Fears"): "Don't run. You'll just die tired."
I read somewhere that the gun was developed first to destroy Russian tanks, they attempted to mount the gun on other airframes but was unsuccessful. The A10 from what I read was built around the gun. If anyone has any more info on that please chime in.
"The A10 from what I read was built around the gun." - that's what is said in the video, too.
indeed the gun was made to destroy russian tanks, but what a 10 fans never mention is that it failed to do that role... the live fire test showed it to be ineffective to useless at taking out the russian tanks of that era, which is why the a10 carries around an oversized gun which is too slow firing to be effective against troops
Voting in for the Marine Viper, a deadly attack helicopter that was born out of the Vietnam war
I like it.
The original version was the Hughes AH-1 Cobra. The Viper (AH-1Z) is only its latest variant.
When talking about Nam’ you’re forgetting about the super tweet.
love the bo clip in there lol
I just hate it when they put 50 cal sound effect on glorious A-10 gun
Contrary to the commentary, the P47 was also used as a fighter ( escorting B17s of the 8th Air Force ).
Insurgency Sandstorm really nails the A-10. When it's on your side, there is simply no better sound in the game to be heard.
When Warlock has your back, problems tend to disappear.
I love the A-10 flying it in Ace Combat 7 is awesome.
I know at one point the UK Gov looked at buying them for the RAF but cancelled the idea. A real shame I think they would be GREAT for the UK.
Yeah, about that. Brits took the most friendly fire damage from A-10 during Gulf war (so i can understand that why you would not want to have an aircraft that can not recognise friend or foe)
@@madkoala2130 The UK Gov looked at buying them a long time before that !
