    3:49 The GPS function is so clever of the developers (Unless it uses the phones gps and writes it to the raw file and not turning on the gps in the camera). Very useful for the cameras which don't come with inbuilt gps.

    Nice review. Just got my two yesterday (for the D750 and D850).
    Tight fit with the D750 (because of the placement of the strap nub on the camera body). But otherwise they are small and unobtrusive.

    Looks interesting but I’m not seeing any examples that go from daylight to full night with the Milky Way well exposed. Most cameras’ auto exposure routines will go from daylight to deep twilight just fine but they stall once it gets dark, giving nothing but grossly underexposed images. If the Unleashed device is judging its exposure from the camera histogram I wonder if it won’t do any better than using the camera’s auto exposure, albeit with exposure smoothing.
    But even then the exposure changes from frame to frame can’t be less than 1/3 stop so there will still be flickering. Easy to fix in post, but it’s not a true bulb ramping device where all exposures are set with the camera on Bulb, and shutter speeds can shift by very tiny amounts.
    How well will it ramp to the 30 seconds at ISO 6400 needed for a well exposed Milky Way scene? The TimeLapse View works great for ramping to long exposures because it has its own light meter that works far better under low light. Plus the View can sync to motion control devices. If the Unleashed can’t do that then it’s limited for professional time lapse work. But it is cheaper.
    But let’s see a full sunset to Milky Way sequence shot unattended without need for manual overrides. If you have to do the latter you might as well just shoot a holy grail the old fashioned way, by manually changing settings every few shots. If it can go from sunset to Milky Way unattended, I’m in. Thanks!

If this product have Sony version i might buy one for my other Sony body. Although You can auto ramp shutter speed, F, ISO with mode P* of Sony camera but it can not pre-program F number like this product. Can this unit do interval ramping?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  4 года назад +1

      I talked to Foolography and they said that they are working on Sony triggers but it may take a while and to subscribe to their news letter for updates. As far as interval ramping, it currently does not do that, however I was able to do it manually very quickly. I did a sunrise ramp and I started off with a 10 second interval for the majority of the auto ramp. As the shutter started getting faster around 2 seconds I stopped the time lapse real quick, adjusted my interval to 4 seconds and then continued shooting. So you can do it manually pretty easily.

    Thanks for the tutorial, I take that this unit cannot be paired with a Syrp Genie or mini as they would be using the same port?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  4 года назад +1

      So I'm still trying to figure that out because the top of the Unleashed unit is a GP-1/GPS port which I can put a cable that attaches to my SYRP Genie 1. The problem is in time lapse mode on the genie it triggers the camera instead of my phone app. I have to see if I can override this somehow. As a work around I can put the genie in video mode and have it preform a linear or panning movement and use UNLEASHED for the time lapse function. You just have to make sure the video movement is extremely slow. So if I do a 2 hour duration on the UNLEASHED APP then I would set my GENIE to 2 hour duration (pan or slide) movement. The increments it takes over 2 hours is so minimal that it shouldn't be noticeable on the time lapse even doing long exposures. Still testing this theory out.

      I’ve read it in one of their blogs, that you still need to transfer your images to an editing software, e.g. LRTimelapse to smooth it out.

    Can this be used while your camera is in live view? I sometimes timelapse at 300mm+ and the mirror flop from my dlsr creates blurry frames. I assume this is similar to an app I've used and doesn't let you use live view while the app is running. The obvious solution would be to buy a mirrorless camera but I'm not going to do that rn.

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  4 года назад +1

      Yes you can use it with live view, however when it is taking the exposure you won't be able to see it. So for example when I take a 10 seconds exposure and my interval is set to 11 or 12 seconds I will have 1 or 2 seconds to see the photo appear on the back of my LCD screen to make sure it looks properly exposed. Typically I turn off the screen to save my camera battery life but I will turn it on from time to time during a time lapse to make sure the exposure looks good.

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  3 года назад +1

      The ramping is automatically done by the app and device once you input the parameters which is required for any ramping device so it’s actually easy. Also if you’re worried about shutter count then you shouldn’t do any time lapse work for that matter. I’ve done them for years on numerous Nikon cameras and gotten my shutter into the hundreds of thousands without ever needing to service my cameras. Lastly this helps you control your camera without touching your camera so you can still use it for long exposure work and other still photography.

      How does the Sony camera’s built-in intervalometer differ from Nikon Z’s? You can also set aperture priority on the latter and let the camera adjust the exposure smoothly via the shutter speed/ ISO. Unless you can set the Sony to full manual exposure with an algorithm to auto-ramp, I don’t see how it’s any more special than the Nikon Z camera’s intervalometer? Am I missing something here?
