Foolography Unleashed Review | Control Your DSLR From your Smartphone

- My latest vlog is a review of Foolography Unleashed. This bluetooth device allows you to control your DSLR from your smartphone.
Foolography were kind enough to send one to me to review and see what I think. But they haven't asked for a review that must be positive or whatever else. I am giving you my thoughts on this so it is a genuine review rather than one that must meet certain requirements which other companies do tend to ask for.
Is it everything that they claim? Well you know that not everything is perfect and it does, for me, have some niggles. But they do seem to be a company that listens to its customers which is always a good thing!

Good review Julian. Some of the features you mention are a definite must have. Specifically stipulating total shots and the auto stepped ramping with minor increments. A nice (but huge improvement extension) would use of GPS and and link to an ephemeris app to plan.
I acquired the original Cam Ranger 4 years ago along with LRT for a sunset through blue hour. The latter now needs to upgrade at cost. I used both for my first Holy Grail. There is also a Cam Ranger 2. This Foolography product looks like good value.
Thanks for that Simon. I'd say it's good value and so small too! OK? you need LR Timelapse to finish it off but normally those people that are serious about doing time lapse probably have that or are looking to get it.
The last thing I need is another gadget remote. Thanks for the review and overview.
No problems Tony! I do a lot of time lapse and my Promote Control although excellent is still bulky to carry around. The Unleashed isn't perfect but it's not bad either.
Thanks Julian, loved this one.
Thanks Ford! It's a useful device if you do time lapse photography. I'm always interested in things that make life easier and this goes someway to doing that.
I'd love to hear how this performs with the 5DS..... given it has no WIFI or Bluetooth built in... as compared to the 5d Mark IV that has both....
Hi Mark. i'm guessing that it won't at all as it needs Bluetooth in order to function. The commands are sent via your phone to the device via BT and as such the camera would need it in order to function.
@@JulianElliottPhotography actuality I was able to confirm it works fine. The C1 version is designed from the ground up to be compatible with the 5DS. Check the specs.
@@markreif1 that's good to know. My previous comment was ill thought out. I was thinking that it was the Bluetooth in the camera but forgot it was in the device itself. Doh🙄
Thanks Julian. Interesting.
Would doing time lapses with the iPhone (on a tripod) via one of the many Apps, not be good enough?
Morning William. I can't answer that as I haven't used any apps apart from the Unleashed which works off of Bluetooth.
Not really, you need additional software like LRTimelapse to process the timelapse to get the true holy grail effect.
iPhones are great for doing basic timelapses but they cannot do day to night correctly.
@@jeremytucker1680 You definitely need LR Timelapse to finish off the sequence. I have done a time lapse or two on my iPhone but I'm don't know if anyone has ever come up with an app to holy grail sequences.
But absolutely a DSLR is the best way to do HG sequences.
@@JulianElliottPhotography Yep, a DSLR is the only way currently. no doubt there will be an app that auto ramps in the future.
@@jeremytucker1680 I'm sure there's something or if not someone will. The Lightroom app as well as others already allows the taking of photos with proper exposure times so I'm sure it will be engineered in the future.
first thank you for your great review . My worry is the shuttercount with timelapses Dslr's are going bad with verry high shutterspeeds, i have a nikon d800.
Hi Frank. Absolutely understand that problem. I don't know the cost of replacement shutters on Nikon cameras but if memory serves me right the Canon shutter was something like 200€ to replace. It wasn't too bad if needed but thankfully I haven't, yet, had that issue.
@@JulianElliottPhotography Hi thank you for your answer. i didnt know it can be replaced )
@@voederbietels yes, it can absolutely be replaced. Certainly I know on the Canon front it can be. It was always a concern of mine given the punishment the shutter goes through when doing the sequences but if you take a look at the new R5 they are saying the shutter will last a good 1/2 millions actuations.
Do you have your camera set to auto off and if so, does the Unleash unit power your Canon on and then off to preserve power? I am concerned that my fujifilm XT3/4 will last overnight of Timelapse photography and since it takes up the USB C port (the 22' version that is), I can't even dongle an external battery to it. If I use the built in camera intervalometer, it manages power excellent (auto wake/off) but does not have exposure ramping for changing lighting conditions.
Hi William: I haven’t used mine in a while as it actually fell apart which I’m not happy about.
From what I remember, my camera isn’t on auto-off.
The unit does use minimal power though. That I got from the company when I spoke to them on the phone.
@@JulianElliottPhotography thank you. The company got back to me on this and auto on/off isn't something available for the Fuji system at the moment. Sorry to hear that yours fell apart. Certainly doesn't reflect well on the company's offering!
does it support canon R ?
Hi there. Here is the list of supported models and the Canon R is on there: www.foolography.com/products/unleashed/compatibility
Thank you for the review!
I’m wondering about the auto ramping feature. I’ve been using my built in time lapse feature of my camera (canon 6Dm2), in Av priority mode for TLs involving changing lights.. Works okay. In what way would the auto ramping be better? Would it be better actually? That’s the only feature I’d need of the app.
I was hoping I didn’t need to edit it afterwards, but could get a decent quality SOOC.
Thank you!
Hi there
The problem using AV mode is that although your aperture is consistent the shutter speed isn't. It's better using manual or bulb when doing holy grail time lapse sequences.
Having the auto-ramp does stop you from touching the camera. You still do need to use something like LRTimelapse to process the resulting sequence though.
@@JulianElliottPhotography
Thank you for your quick response!
The TL in your video looked good. Was it post-processed or SOOC?
@@e.l.1890 it was captured in camera then finished in LRT. They haven't yet figured out bulb ramping so it's changing the steps in 1/3 stops.
@@JulianElliottPhotography
Thank you, again !
I have a Nikon D810 and I hooked it up correctly but it won’t pair with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, and I can’t find any support email or how to get in-touch with them. Would you know how I could contact them since they contacted you?
Morning Michael. I just took a look on their website. There is indeed a support email. Try them on this: support@foolography.com
@@JulianElliottPhotography thank you, I found out it was a simple mistake. But one thing that is happening is when the App goes to sleep it won't wake up sometimes for a while, the only thing that stays on is the GPS indicator.
@@deerpark2439 I've noticed that too. You can see it blinking away. But I've found that it doesn't take long to wake it up again.
I do wish though that they would give us a firmware update. It's a very promising device but I haven't seen anything in the way of the focus stacking etc that they were working on.
@@JulianElliottPhotography, you probably didn’t have this happen to you, but I emailed their support about my issue, and I’ve never had the rudest response from a support or customer service.
@@deerpark2439 hi. What's happened? Myself, I was contacted and asked to review it so don't have any connections at all. But it sounds like you're not getting anywhere with them.
Personally, I think the device has excellent possibilities BUT some of the things promised have yet to be added and it's been quite a while now.
Sancerre area?
Hi @John Calberg? Nope it's around Saumur.
Interesting?
It is absolutely an interesting device Gino. If they can sort out proper bulb ramping then it will be an amazing bit of kit!!!
