I loved that the movies didn't completely disrespect the Flash. He was strong and smart. Most Flash stories make him a weak joke who runs not at super speed but at slighty faster than a regular human running speed.
WB was the problem. WB made the decision to base it on New 52 as an attempt to boost the brand and the animated movie writers were stuck with it even after DC rebooted the comics and DC 52 ended. WB made the production schedule where they had to put out 2 movies set in this universe per year. WB refused to increase the budget even after more than 10 years. Overall, I am pretty impressed that the writers were able to do as well as they could given the limitations put on them and the quite frankly crappy treatment by WB.
Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious that there were too many films crammed into such a short time period. It would've done some good if many of these films with similar plotlines and casts were merged into single films with higher budgets. At the end of the day, however, no one can deny that DC actually managed to pull off an animated film universe, compared to Marvel, whose animated films often seem random, here and there. Higher budgets definitely need to be addressed, of course. The next film should be hyped up for years as a big event.
Thing is the New 52 area WAS the comics at that point. So it's not like they had anything else to adapt. Frankly I want to see this universe's version of Superboy return. He needs to come back, he was the best animated version of Conner.
The New 52 take place on earth-1 and you're right Young Justice is the best by far Young Justice take place one earth 16 the best story lines come from earth 16
@@monsemaniaa no. The DCAU is Batman The Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, the Zeta Project, Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. As well as the following movies. Mask of the Phantasm, Return of the Joker, Mystery of the Batwoman, Batman and Harley Quinn, Justice League vs the Fatal Five, and Subzero. As well as some comic books that had been made over the years but not much.
I think the problem in the comics is that Damian’s progress and maturity as a character was subject to being undone by the next writer. Damian will learn to work well with others if not developed outright healthy relationships with his family and friends only for the next run to completely throw all his progress out the window and do it again just a little bit differently. Damian in these films, tries to find himself, ends up making friends, appreciating his family, learning to be apart of a team, and they never go backwards on those things.
I loved these films despite what other people say and despite its problems. They were just fun and exciting and it was fun to see a lot of characters just come together and be animated in general. Sure, they could’ve been better but I love them despite all its problems.
Totally agree. With how many movies and the huge cast there is, it's probably a better representation of comics through movies than anything in the MCU. Also to complain that it seems to be the era of the New 52 is just a pitiful argument..... what did they want? The same stories from previous era's that have been told more than Bruce Wayne's parents getting shot or Uncle been death. Totally straw man arguments.
I agree, I had a blast with these. Marathoned them in chronological order over the course of a few weeks after the Snyder cut dropped on HBO max. despite how disjointed they could be at times, I liked most of them quite a bit.
I will admit I was kind of shocked how it ended. It went from something as innocent as Flash fixing a timeline and Batman discovering his son to the League getting literally torn apart and enslaved. Still, I’d be lying if said I don’t miss it. It had problems don’t get me wrong, but it was fun having a new movie every year.
@@Dasamurai1 battle of super-sons was a passable movie. no way starro got beaten by two kids who didn't even get along well until the second half of the movie. and new GL movie was shite
I would like to point out that 2 of the movies you said you really liked (Justice League vs. Teen Titans and Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay) were the only 2 movies in this series written by animation legend Alan Burnett. For those of you who don't know Alan he was a main producer and writer for every DC animated show from Batman The Animated Series to Justice League Unlimited. He also wrote the screenplay for the Mask of the Phantasm which is possibly the best Batman movie ever made. The point I want to make by highlighting Alan is that the quality of these animated movies will always rest on whose writing the stories for these movies more than anything else.
OMG!!!! Yes universe I hear you, I get the hint. I’ll have the goddam DCAU marathon starting with Batman the animated series and ending with JLU🙄 This is like the fifth hint. I get it, those series are some of the best, stop yelling!
@@ProjektTaku Nah, The Batman vs Dracula is more rewatcheable. Same with the Dark Knight. I enjoyed return of the Joker, but I would probably only watch it once or twice.
My problem with this universe was that it felt very limited to the characters and setting around it. We never got too invested into this universe unlike DCAU or the Young Justice universe because we were only limited to characters and settings that they wanted to focus on. It really felt like they were trying to explore this universe after Justice League vs Teen Titans, but were restricted to certain characters, because higher ups at DC or WB animation wanted the writers and producers to focus on characters that they higher ups told them to focus on and how it should be structured. In this universe, only have 2 justice league movies (one was really just an origin story for Aquaman), 4 Batman movies(which 3 of them either focused or center around Damian Wayne), 2 Superman movies, 1 Wonder Woman movie, 2 justice league dark movies, 2 teen titans movies(which one of them also center around Damian), 1 suicide squad movie, and 1 Constantine movie. I feel like we should have gotten another justice league movie that properly introduced Martian Manhunter and Hawkman, or to develop the league’s relationship. We should have gotten more movies about Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Justice League Dark, Teen Titans, and the Suicide Sqaud. We also should have gotten movies that focus on Aquaman (and solely on him), Green Lantern, Shazam, Nightwing, Batgirl, Batwoman, Batwing, and Catwoman. Hell there were characters that were hinted about their existence in that universe such as Green Arrow, Blackfire, and maybe Black Lightning, or characters that were being set up like Jericho, Donna Troy Wonder Girl, and Wallace West Kid Flash but we never get to see them appear nor have major roles outside of cameos.
Damnit you just dropped the mic. I think these movies showed how the new 52 was handled mostly Batman and everyone else. I did enjoy them for the most part other than Damian I hate him. But they kept Nightwing in Blue so there's that
@@TheDuck632 Indeed. I enjoy some of the things that they brought out, hell I would say that my favorite ones are the ones that doesn’t focus or center around Batman and his lore. I actually like Damian Wayne both the movies and in comics, tho I do think that most of the first few movies focuses on him way too much, but I still love his growth and his relationship with Raven in that universe. Overall I just wished the other characters got a chance to shine since a lot of things happened off-screen.
@Herb Coswell Yea, and I’m actually loving these rebirth movies since they are focusing on different characters than Batman such as Superman, Martian Manhunter, Flash, Justice Society of America, and John Stewart Green Lantern. And not to mention it feels like the crew behind these movies are having more creative freedom with that universe than the previous one.
Kinda wish this universe got a TV series. Heck, maybe do that for a new Teen Titans series on streaming, take a bit of inspiration from the 2005 series and even bring back originals from those like Control Freak.
@@rikajougasaki3296 I agree, I think this universe would have been better as tv series than movies. I can see their shows focusing or centering around Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Teen Titans, Justice League Dark, and Suicide Sqaud. Especially since this would have competed with the Marvel animated shows that aired on Disney XD that were only meant to market the MCU at the time with Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH, The Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, and Marvel’s Spider-Man (2017).
I'm still pissed that we'll never get another movie with that version of the Teen Titans, I would have loved a Judas Contract sequel with Blackfire as the main antagonist.
God, that would have been so great. We could have had a bit of development for Donna Troy, seen Tamaran, have Nightwing and Starfire grow closer... I mean, sure, we would also have to suffer through more of Damian Wayne's bullshit, but still...
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 I don't think Damian would have been an issue, since one of the things that I like in Judas Contract is that Damian and Raven, who had the most focus in the first film, took a step back to allow the other characters to develop more. I do know that they considered a post credits scene for Judas Contract with Blackfire though, which is why I would have loved another film to be focused on that (especially since Starfire's backstory has never been done justice to).
@@jackhummer8344 Well, the first film was more about Damian stealing Raven's character arc than Damian and Raven, but yeah. You got it right on the money. Even the Teen Titans cartoon did little with Starfire's backstory.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 Honestly, I hate what the Teen Titans animated series did to Starfire. They basically turned her into a joke and the damage can still be felt to this day.
@@jackhummer8344 That's not true. Starfire has gotten screwed over because Batman editorial wants to make her as irrelevant as possible to Nightwing. The animated series made her better, if anything. The comicbook Starfire is either a mindless barbaric killer who needs to be held back by Dick or a sexusl goldfish for Jason Todd. And then there's whatever the hell the live action series did... Compared to that? The animated series tackles her issues as a literal foreigner, the emotional core of the team and a good person in general. Believe me, the animated series saved Starfire from obscurity and outright erasure.
@@spiderhamilton1 no. It’s actually part of Young Justice canon. The writer of that movie is the showrunner of Young Justice who said the movie’s events are Young Justice adjacent meaning there are some continuity inconsistencies but it’s pretty much canon
Hey doesn’t have them though, it’s even discussed in the first movie over time his memories of the old universe are replaced with ones from the new ones. By the time Justice league war even happens he wouldn’t likely have completely forgotten flashpoint
The biggest problem I saw was trying to make Damien the focus of the storyline even though stories weren't about him. And they didn't introduce John Kent as his foil so they shoe horned him in with the teen titans. The court of owls should have been a focus on Grayson, not Damien. The departures they made from the comics were forced at best
Jon didn’t even exist when this series began. He didn’t even meet Damian until 2016/17. By that point it wouldn’t have made sense to shoehorn him into the universe seeing how Clark and Lois weren’t yet together.
@@Artryom that was really a story in the comics about the lineage/legacy of the Wayne and Grayson families. DC messed up not making that about dick and Damien being a supporting character. That would have given Damien a view of how deadly dick could really be, kind of like they did with batman in bad blood and TT vs JL. If not that then we should have gotten a movie with dick as agent 37. So many possibilities that they messed up catering to damien.. hell we still haven't seen Tim outside of BTAS amd a little of him in YJ. Or even the WHOLE bat family vs say kobra or something
My least favorite part about the last movie is that Cyborg says “Suck it, bitches” instead of “Booyah” as his last words. It felt edgy for edgy’s sake.
it's basically his last words before he dies. saying a complete "F**k You" to one that created this whole mess makes more sense compared to some cheap line that he may easily say while having a shower.
The directors actually considered this (source: director tweets during the watch along). But felt it wasn't appropriate for the scene and the scene that came after
Some of the films were rocky in quality but overall I’d argue they did a magnificent job with The DC Animated Movie Universe. They made The New 52 era slightly more interesting to me despite its flaws and unlike me a lot of fans complain about Joker fatigue in DC content well this universe barely uses him at all and focuses a lot more on other Batman villains and they did it a lot better then Beware The Batman attempted. This universe deserves a lot more praise then people give it credit for. Despite its flaws, It’s pretty underrated in my book.
Crazy how DC animation had there own thing going on for years and it didn't get nearly enough attention. DC is running the animation category while marvel is running the live action. Really wished these movies got more appreciation. I really loved the continuity and story from these dc movies, from Flash paradox to Apokolips War, great writing.
I have a great appreciation for this little animated universe. I feel like what we got was overall decent quality and solid entertainment. I'll be coming back to these movies for a long time, I think.
The DCAU was my favorite connected universe personally and I hated Apocalypse War, in my opinion it seemed like needless violence to brutally end a universe I had grown fond of.
I had a similar relationship with this set of movies. Liked most of them, loved a few of them, the rest aren't bad but aren't really good either. If I had to pick something about them that I didn't like, I guess I would say I felt they were over-reliant on Batman. I don't think he really needed to be as central as he was to a movie like Justice League: Dark, and if he hadn't been there would have been more time available for other characters, like Swamp Thing. Who doesn't love Swamp Thing? On a more personal level, as a Dick Grayson fan I really hated a lot of moments in these movies. They really did Nightwing dirty.
I agree. I think that's a weakness of New 52 in general, they focus on Damien a lot. I like Damien but I don't thunk it's fair to brush over the other Robins
My friend, that has been DC's biggest weakness ever since it started: *Too much Batman.* Unfortunately, this issue eill never be solved as long as there's desperate fanboys who want to see whichever "Generic angtsy teen sidekick" they happen to be head over heels with at the time, like children collecting action figures.
Sadly, it seems that not that many people love Swamp Thing... the first season of his TV show was super promising, but nobody was watching it so it got axed. On the other hand, *Batwoman* , a show that also tanked with the audience, somehow got 3 seasons; For shame!
I hope they give Nightwing his own movie or series sometime soon. It seems interesting and I only ever hear good things about it. But I didn'f even know Bloodhaven was a thing until I watched a comics video exclusively focused on Nightwing, and even then it was an afterthought.
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 - Honestly, and I'm saying that as a big Nightwing fan, if you want to get into the character you'll have to rely on comic books. The first *"Nightwing"* run that, well, ran from 1996 to 2009 is a classic. That's where he settles into Blüdhaven and tries to become his own man/hero away from Batman. The *New52* Nightwing run was pretty clunky, there's some good stuff here and there, but you can skip it. The *Rebirth* Nightwing run (that started in 2016) is excellent, at least up to the point where there's the whole "Ric" stuff... Long story short, from issue #1 to #50 it's excellent, with some great conflicts against very good antagonists like Raptor, the Judge, the new Blockbuster, Dr Simon Hurt, etc... Then you have the "Ric state" which last for like 25 issues, before stuff becomes interesting again. Aside from the comics, I guess I'm one of the few that really like Nightwing in the show *Titans* , even if the origin story of his new alter-ego is super clunky. Season 1 of the show is pretty strange, much like *Gotham* and *Legends of Tomorrow* , this show's first season's tone is very different from the rest, and finds its stride in season 2. But maybe I'm just over-generous with *Titans* because before that, the only live action Nightwing I had was the Joel Schumacher one? Anyway, have fun.
I think an interesting thing is that flash's conscience from flashpoint doesn't catch up to the universe until around apocalypse war which is crazy because that means reverse flash makes it to the new timeline before flash.
When animation and DC are together, these films come to mind for me. Everyone may have grew up with the dcau with the Kevin Conroy batman, I grew up with the dcamu. These films introduced DC to me. DC was the first universe I was introduced to. It's what made me love comics. The Dcamu will hold a special place in my heart
People keep hyping up the dcau and saying nothing compares to it in quality, but I'm pretty sure those same people have either never seen the shows(are ignoring the potential bad ones) or have rose tinted nostalgia glasses on. There seems to be a overall lack of appreciation for universes between that and the current dc universes.
I’d love to see your take on Young Justice. Seasons 1 and 2 are top tier. Definitely excited for your video on that. Also, Matt Ryan as John Constantine is amazing.
If you watched Season 3, you wouldn't have said that. Not only is EVERYTHING about Young Justice terrible, but it kinda made me realise that it shouldn't have been allowed to exist, much less be revived. It's not just bad, it's so bad that it made DC animation worse. And I'm really tired of people pretending it's anywhere close to good.
@@o.8.p149 You might, MIGHT have had a point about S1. But S2's time skip and outright rebooting of every character makes it horrible. As for S4, it's now an anthology for all of DC. Essentially, Young Justice stopped being about Young Justice. The writers got so bored with their own characters that they brought a character from another show to carry it. No. Stop. Young Justice is bad.
I hated how it all ended, just watching almost every hero die like nothing was really painful to watch. I did enjoy most of these movies tho which is why having it end like that was hard to watch for me. It's like if the Justice League TV show from the 2000s ended in a similar way out of nowhere, after seeing some of these characters grow and stuff, hell even those that never had lines like Hawkman. That's why it's gonna be hard for me to rewatch the whole universe in the future if I ever feel like I want to.
I’d be curious to hear what you think of Swamp Thing and Young Justice. Both are, in my opinion, the best shows DC has put out since the close of the DCAU with the end of Justice League Unlimited.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 I know you really hate YJ after season 3, but even seasons 3 and 4 are better than any of DC’s other recent shows, aside from Doom Patrol and Superman and Lois. Even then, Doom Patrol is more entertaining out of its sheer oddness and likable characters (mostly Robotman) than its actual storytelling, which is all over the place. Superman and Lois has its storytelling issues as well, but nails the character and personality of Superman so well that it makes up for most of its rough spots.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 I know what you mean. I used to be sad that YJ was cancelled, but I regret it being brought back now. Season 3 was OK-ish. I thought that it's been a while, they're getting the hang of things, and maybe they'll keep the woke down, but that wasn't the case. Season 4 came, and it was worse in multiple ways. Young Justice is now a product of it's time. Now I can't help but wonder what it would have been like if it had never been cancelled.
Yet, up to this moment YJ haven’t been confirmed for season 5. That’s crazy to me. I get not everybody is a fan of the recent YJ but if it was up to me, YJ would be confirmed for 10 more seasons.
@@thechad4485 - it's indeed a shame that *Swamp Thing* wasn't given a second season... *Constantine* was also cut short with 1 season, but at least Matt Ryan was rescued by *Arrow & Legends of Tomorrow* ... Swamp Thing got a nod in "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and that's it... Just curious, since we seem to enjoy the same shows (Doom Patrol, Superman & Lois, Young Justice, etc), what do you think of *Stargirl* ? IMHO it's the best Arrowverse show right now alongside Supes&Lois, and I wish more people would give it a shot, as I don't want it to be cancelled because not enough people watch it... Also, did you enjoy *Peacemaker* ?
I actually think "The Death of Superman" is the best movie product ( animated or live action ) that DC has put out to date. It's got more heart than any other movie. The scene with Lois standing on the rubble throwing rocks at Doomsday is heart wrenching. And the writing is more tightened up than anything else, as well.
I can’t lie, I got back into DC because of RUclips Shorts. I started watching the Justice League show, then Justice League Unlimited and jumped into Dark Apokalipse. Strangely enough starting with the last movie made me more intrigued and invested in everyone. This universe was pretty cool
Young Justice is the only DC Animation I care about at this point. It feels like a spiritual continuation of the original Justice League & Unlimited shows.
That is wrong on every level. Young Justice is the reason DC animation went down the shitter. Since when did pointless drama, stiff animation and cringy lingo come anywhere near close to JLU's compelling narratives? JLU was so good even ALAN MOORE LIKED IT. And he doesn't like anything! Young Justice? It's the same direct to DVD crap you've seen a million times.
In watching this video, I teared up when Supes died, but legit had tears when Batman held Damien and it looked like he was dying. I missed so much from these films!!
That’s an interesting meta ending that also kind of comments on the “hurt” fans feel when someone they love ends or is treated differently than they want/expect. That’d be an interesting concept to roll into one of the bigger properties if any of the producers has that foresight and humility
Honestly, one of the best video essays I've seen on this universe. As an enjoyer of parts of the New 52 and the DCAMU, I am glad that someone else sees some positives in this. So although it didn't have nearly as much character development, directed focus, or stepladder foundation that it needed, it does (in my mind) successfully deliver some great things despite being full of a lot of bad things. I was really hoping they could have turned the universe around and was disappointed when they couldn't, but I am nonetheless happy they managed to deliver a few good worthwhile stories
The animated DC universe was AMAZINGLY good. There were a few hiccups, but abundantly good. Then, a new timeline was created and… it’s been great so far. I’m all in. Give me more!
John Constantine and Zatanna was one of the main reasons why I actually liked the series. In fact most of the relationships were handled pretty well in my opinion, including Selina and Bruce, Clark and Lois.
Honestly I see it as a success, they told a full complete story. There were definitely weak movies, movies that were overall weak but had fun moments..but overall I think they had a great story, and gave a lot of characters time to shine.
I watched these movies completely out of order🤦🏻♀️. I enjoyed the Batman movies though I think I’m a bit biased because he is my favorite DC character. I just really loved watching his and Damian’s relationship grow into more of a father and son relationship. It was so cute 😭
One thing I did like about the New 52 animated movies is that they were violent AF it makes it realistic when hero’s or villains actually bleed and cry out in pain
I wanted to see more Green Lantern movies from this universe but what we got instead was DC nerfing the shit out of Hal Jordan and not allowing him to live up to his fullest potential Can we get another universe based on the DC Earth One storylines, DC?
I liked these movies…except Dark Apokolips. The first time I saw it, I was struck by how dark and violent it was. The second time, I was struck by how poorly it was written.
Technically there kinda was DCAMU that ended up with Flashpoint Paradox , it included Crisis on Two Earths, Doom, Wonder Woman... Problem with DCAMU starts with how much of step back it was in comparison with previous movies. JL War was first where they start budgeting with animation and voice actors, and direction of some scenes were down right horrible, Son of Batman followed... Eventually Its story that tried to compensate yet rarely ever came close to anything prior to first reboot. Universe building itself had lot to be desired for, never got Flash or Green Lantern movie and Wonder Woman and Superman movies came way too late, while the order of some were just wrong, Teen Titans should been before Teen Titans VS JL just like Constantine should had been before JL Dark... For most part, it was mediocre... but when it was good, it was really good.
Yea, it felt like they were picking and choosing which character and team they wanted to focus on. Like you said, it’s really weird that they made a teen titans movie and a suicide sqaud movie before a Superman and a Wonder Woman. Hell, the WW movie really felt like a afterthought or a least a B-project, cuz you can really tell how much the animation quality decreased in Wonder Woman: Bloodlines because they spend so much on Justice League Dark: Apolokips War
@@xanderg.1070 WW Bloodlines looked like some random kid you had maybe one course in animation made that movie. I can't believe how atrocious that movie looks. People complain about how the other movies like JL War looks but my god, bloodlines is one of the worst things I've seen out of these animated movies. It's like they had no idea what proportions are. There are some shots where the faces look so bad. The eyes don't line up and I have to stop myself from running away in terror. Well that and the story was just lame.
@@dkirby9052 Indeed. Cuz like after rewatch the movies in that universe, I said around Suicide Sqaud: Hell to Pay, I noticed how much the animation quality was starting to decrease. Especially when you look at the scenes of Reverse Flash’s flashbacks of him getting shot by Thomas Wayne Batman in Flashpoint Paradox. Everything after that was still the same quality but WW: Bloodlines really showed how much the budget of these movies were at. Like I said, I felt like WW: Bloodlines felt more like a B-project because it looked like they were saving enough money for JLDAW. And what makes the movie even worst is that it felt like an afterthought. The fact they made a Wonder Woman movie to be the second to last movie is just sad. I feel like the reason this movie exists is because of the success of the 2017 movie starring Gal Gadot. I feel like they should have made a Wonder Woman movie and even a Superman movie way before they want to focus on the justice league, teen titans, and task force X. A movie about those two characters shouldn’t be made to be the last few movies before the big one
@@xanderg.1070 They picked and Focused based on popularity, Thats why Batman got 4 movies and Suicide Squad Hell to Pay came out the same year the live action did (ironically ended up as masterpiece while live action flopped). Wouldnt say Wonder Woman Bloodlines was worst but it was just meh, they tucked the movie there when SJW movement already took over, which we already saw affecting Hush and Reign of Superman. Major Issue I personally had was with the very ending of Apocalpyse War and the universe itself, while being emotional and wholesome they decide to repeat same mistake comics do, and erase whole thing just so they can get reboot... which left me uninspired to watch anything new to come...
I mean it was genuinely held back anyway. Yeah it had its moments, but overall I was consider it a failure because no one asks for a new 52 universe. That's the problem and that's something that DC should have understood cuz their previous movies before Flashpoint paradox were based off of actual story lines from the comics so they were taking the art style of the artist and the storyline and making movies that's more successful than hey let's try to merge all of these movies together into a cohesive universe when more people don't like the new 52. So it was sort of a failure on them to assume that a lot of the fans would enjoy The New 52 style of movies plus the art style was the same art style is Young Justice which confused a lot of people too as is it in the same universe or not when it wasn't and they should have got a new style if you're going to use a style of a Young Justice shoes you might as well have made it part of the Young Justice Universe if that's the case that was another thing that made the universal failure as well. Now we had gem's and it had moments but overall it just wasn't a good universe. And I'm kind of glad that it ended
The DCAU is still better than the DCEU. At least, it’s more consistent. It’s unfortunate they could never find their stride and had to rely on flashpoint happening twice in order to find their footing, but I really wanna check out Man of Tomorrow since it looks like they’re going through with their mini Superman-Renaissance.
The DCAU is definitely better. However the DCAMU is just about as bad as the DCEU. The new movie universe, or the Tomorrowverse as I’ve heard most people refer to it as, has been excellent so far. Man of Tomorrow, Justice Society WWII, and The Long Halloween parts 1 & 2 have all been great. I am really looking toward to Green Lantern: Beware My Power!
@@thechad4485 I at least respect the dcamu for knowing when to throw in the towel and end on a memorable note. Nowadays I have a chip on my shoulder from dc and marvel not knowing when to quit. (The snyderverse is better off dead and phase 4 is just disappointing) Also, despite being a jsa fan I did not enjoy jsa ww2. For one despite being a jsa movie there are too many justice league members(Barry, diana, Clark and Arthur) making a 4:5 ratio to jsa members(jay, carter, Rex and black canary and Kent Nelson) and while having the original psycho pirate was good he was lacking aesthetically to me(needed either the trademark mask or his Yosemite Sam mustache to look like the pirate to me). I did like the opening fight of Superman and Barry vs brainiac though.
While I don't think it was perfect and a little too narrowly focused on Batman, I still really liked this universe. The only movies I didn't really care much for are Justice League: War, Batman: Bad Blood and Winder Woman: Bloodlines. I loved Flashpoint Paradox, Batman vs. Robin, both Teen Titans movies, Justice League Dark, Death of Superman, Suicide Squad, Comstantine, and Apocalypse War. The rest were perfectly good and solidly entertaining. Were they great? No, but I still had loads of fun with Hush, Throne of Atlantis and Son of Batman. Even Reign of the Superman has its creative merits if you can appreciate it in a 90s superhero comics sort of way (the first appearances of Superboy and Steel were some of my first comic books, so I admittedly have some nostalgia). All in all, you can kinda tell it felt like it had an arm tied behind its back, but they managed to put some heart into it. Luckily, if people didn't like that main continuity, they always put out an Elseworlds movie every year as well that was almost always pretty good. I really want to see your take on the new DC animated movie timeline they've been slow building with Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Justice Society: WW2, and Batman: The Long Halloween parts 1 and 2 (and soon to be that Green Lantern Jon Stewart movie). You actually already touched on it with the Constantine short, because that exists in the new universe too. I think these four movies (and the short) are making for a much better foundation for an ongoing universe than the way the one discussed in this video started out, and in general, they're actually fairly character and thematically driven films. I also much prefer the art style to the previous one.

This whole video was so fantastic. Seriously. I sincerely appreciate this guy putting up all of these DC movies together and comparing them in the order they released. I love the voiceover. I love the jokes. I love the editing. Seriously, giving you guys a like and sub. Keep it up.
I think these would have hit a lot better if it was tied into an animated series, like imagine if there was a Justice League and a Teen Titans show that built up to some of the movies like Death of Superman and Reign of Superman.
Glad there’s a new one. If you’re wondering, it’s Justice Society WW2 (I think that is what it’s called), Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Batman: Long Halloween, and a new Green Lantern movie coming out.
For all it's up and downs, I always felt the animated continuity worked more consistently than the live action DC movies of the last decade. I still will point to the prior Unlimited series as my personal preferred version, but this version seems to stand on its own merit, though I haven't seen House of Mystery or Bloodlines yet
Excellent video essay & I agree! Similar to what you said, IMO, the downfall came when the VARIETY went out the window in favor of that homogenous New 52 look. Artistically, I liked the fact that stories like "New Frontier" & "Batman, Superman: Public Enemies" mirrored their comic book style. Each of those earlier films (especially my personal fave, "Under the Red Hood" * chef's kiss *) felt like a unique & immersive experience; not weighed down by trying to make everything super connected. There were a few decent films post Flashpoint Paradox, but definitely more misses than hits. Everyone that was into those DCAU movies knew the party was over when they made that dreaded connected New 52 announcement. They just couldn't let a good thing be great.
I’ve watched all of them and the only one that really stands out was death of Superman because of the final battle. It was extremely well done and even though you know Clark will die it’s still sad seeing him die.
I actually cried when Barry run at the end of Apokolips War. I binged all of these movies in one month, and yeah, I did see the ups and downs throughout, and got super invested later on. Then Apokolips War, I enjoyed it, for how edgy it is and was. I cried at the end.
I abandoned this universe around pretty quick but thanks for talking about each movie independently, now it is all done, i can go and check out the quality stuff on your recommendation.
I really wish we got movies set in the Young Justice universe. It feels the most lived in like how the comics are, and it's my favorite animated DCverse.
Yeas!! Especially since there are five years skips between seasons. There has to 2 or 3 noteworthy missions/happenings to make movies about during those mid-season expanses.
@@LeesDeeds It's technically not. Greg Weisman came out and said that it's set in a similar universe, where similar events played out, but not in the same universe.
By far my favorite universe, Im one of the few that LOVE New 52. The animation style is perfect, the colors are awesome, the voice acting is awesome, I love this universe to bits. I teared up a bit at the end of Justice League Dark Apokolips War
I absolutely love both the young justice universe and this dc animated universe, lucky for us we got a continuation of young justice but unfortunately I don’t think we will get any more from this, I was fine with the huge bat family centred-ness of these movies because it made me like these characters a lot more (I actually enjoyed Damien’s character from the start and I loved to seeing nightwing) I would have loved to see more from the teen titans in this universe, both the speedy kid flash bumblebee era titans could have been shown in a movie showing how we got to the current JL vs TT lineup and I feel like we could have gotten more from the post Judas contract titans, they even teased new members ,then maybe the sudden growth (age and maturity wise) that raven and Damien had in the last movie wouldn’t have felt like we had missed so much of what happened in between to finally have gotten to this point. It might not be perfect but it was the thing (along side the early days of the arrow verse) that made me get invested in dc, marvel had its mcu that got me invested in them but dc’s movies didn’t do that for me but this animated universe did what the live action movies couldn’t imo I just hope we can get a live action universe like this from dc.
I just want them to make straight comic adaptations instead of altering things and trying to make all the movies fit together. They should consult the creators again, like they did in Batman red hood and Superman vs the elite, to have the true vision of the stories
@@mikemorro140 the changes were made by the writer himself, and i like the changes made in the movie, i actually like the movie more than the comic because we get to explore more of the characters. Same with under the red hood, the writer made the story much more cohesive.
It definitely wasn't a perfect universe, but I think it holds a special place in a lot of fans heart's. I know it got a lot of people into reading DC comics and surprisingly into reading Damian Wayne (i had not been interested in his character until this universe). I also think they handled my favorite character, Raven really well. Especially in the last movie, being one of the main heroes left to try and save the universe. And yes, i absolutely adored her relationship with Damian. Yes it was different, but that's part of the appeal for me. And Raven never has a consistent age, so it didn't bother me how they mixed up generations and teams. I like it when au's try something different. Why tell the exact same stories as main canon. I know some people want that, but I think we can have both, be different!
Why because of all the violence???Under The Red Hood blows that out of the water, paying respect to the comic series it's based on great voice acting that shines with Batman and Jason's dialogue at the end of the film that was a great film not just cursing blood and shock value I'm guessing your 10 and like when things go boom 😒🤦🏽♂️
Lord Bane75 Eh. It’s cool, but a Batman movie vs a movie with so many characters from DC? I’d much rather watch the movie that has so many characters that i care about(not going to lie i can care less about Jason Todd).
@@magma55100 Don't get me wrong I like the big battle DC movies but for sheer quality across the board Under the Red Hood is just a superior movie...IMO
@@kal0247 I get where you're coming from but it's always nearly impossible to fairly compare a movie based off of 1 main character and a movie that was the size of Apokalips War. It'd be like comparing Avengers Endgame and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. For the amount of characters it had and the overall storyline and it being the final movie in the DCAU which has been making movies for years, it was an amazing movie
You have some valid thoughts there and I agree what your saying but if I had a choice on which movie to watch it would bebUnder the Red Hood I personally get more enjoyment out of that movie.
Out of all the ones i have seen, which is a good portion, i only really liked Death of Superman. It really made me cry at the end, which means the movie did a great job at making me care about the characters.
There was no rise, there was only mediocrity with some interesting animation choices and occasional high quality work. It told some interesting stories but never got off the ground by making too many changes to the established DCAU mirroring the failure of new 52 in print media.
Personally loved Hell to Pay, the idea of a card that allows one to bypass hell and go to heaven, that can only be used once, and expires when the holder dies, and therefore can't be killed while holding it making the stakes a lot higher made the movie a great time.
Well it being based on the new 52. I enjoyed the updated costumes the most. If anything the new 52 has great costumes. Story lines especially in the comics were not that great and were purposefully trying to be controversial. I have certain Biases but I think they showed a little too much Batman. Otherwise they improved on some of the storylines of the new 52. It is just sad it ended too early.
I finally got around to watching Death of Superman. It was absolutely fantastic. I regret not seeing it sooner. Best Superman movie in 10 years. Superman vs The Elite is 11 years old. It's still the GOAT.
Tbh: This universe of been great if they did not shove Batman down our throats. It would been cool to get more Flash movies, Cyborg and Shazam teaming up ya know other justice league members. Plus I never cared for this verison of Superman so I never bothered watching his movies.
DCAMU went out on the most Debbie Downer of Debbie Downers but had some solid gems. Really dug Justice League War, Batman Hush, JLD and Wonder Woman Bloodlines.
Death of Superman is the highlight for me. That said, every time they cut back to Doomsday on his way, I roll my eyes and I rather watch the more interesting developing Lois-Superman relationship…. Also I think they made a mistake revealing what Clark message to Lois was. They should kept it from the audience until the climax of Reign of Supermen
This is a really good universe , true there are mistakes with basis like continuty errors between timelines , lack of traditional characters and all that, but simply these are very enjoyeble movies in their own way with a great artstyle i was 9 years old when they released the first movie in 2014,and 15 by the apokilips war in 2020, i grew up as this timeline evolves , i always enjoyed watching clips of one of these movies or movies themselves when i had a free time I love dcamu❤️
idk, the artstyle just aint for me, apparently its by the same guy who did young justice seasons 1 and 2 but it seems to me his designs have gotten alot less refined and bulky, and it doesn't help they have such low budgets.
I don't remember how or when I stumbled across your channel, but I absolutely love Love LOVE your videos bro! Digging that song during the ending credits!
Tomorrowverse is very epic as it fixes the problem DCAU had. Everyone is at the beginning stages of their powers which makes it very interesting and has massive potential for character-driven arcs. And they explore their "Human side" which makes them more relatable.
I loved the DC Animated movie universe. I love the storytelling from Flashpoint to Apokolips War. I thought the Thawne plot was genius. I love how we can fill in the blanks of a typical DC universe timeline whenever a new character is shown in the universe for the first time( Such as the original Teen Titans, the formation of the LOD, among others). I think some of the more mediocre Batman entries should have been given to the Green Lanterns of the universe. However I give this universe so much credit by forgoing expectations and giving the viewers a literal gut punch at the end. There would be no happy ending... Batgirl was eaten alive. I still can't get over that shit... I was literally depressed at the end of the finale. I just did not expect this universe to make me feel something like that.
I love these DC animated movies. I have seen every freaking one and constantly check to see if there are new one. They really need to advertise them more. Their animated movies are the shit!
I've personally really enjoyed what I've seen of the DCAMU. I'm "lucky" I guess that I'm not an avid DC comic reader, so I don't get bogged down in my head with, "but it didn't go down like that!" I'm also kind of an oddball I guess and I like that they gave Damien so much screen time, and almost gave him an alright character arc throughout the series of movies. Seeing him go from obnoxious twat, to functioning obnoxious twat, and to somewhat civilized human being were kinda worth it for me. I know not everyone can get behind his character, but I kind of enjoy him. Besides I'm one of those horrible, scary fans who actually liked his relationship with Raven by the end. Sue me.
starfire's intestines falling out will always haunt me. but also i live for damien/raven (only in this universe really) and i wish they'd gotten together sooner and not in literally the last few minutes of their existence
I don’t generally enjoy Movie Critique channels because all they do complain. But you are fair; seeing the good in imperfect movies. Keep up the good work
I finally found someone who loves Hell to Pay as much as I do. Thank you very much. Also, I'm a fan of the Marvel Lionsgate ones, even though they're not always good
Don't judge me when I say this bur I think you should do a retrospective on DC Super Hero Girls(2019). It's actually a very interesting depiction on younger versions of DC heroes plus the shows gonna have a movie next week
I hope you do a discussion about Obi Wan Kenobi, the Show & the Character. I really loved your Star Wars Videos, so I hope you do a video about Kenobi.
I loved that the movies didn't completely disrespect the Flash. He was strong and smart. Most Flash stories make him a weak joke who runs not at super speed but at slighty faster than a regular human running speed.

@Fenrir uh yeah I think your right
WB was the problem.
T he WB is a joke
Thing is the New 52 area WAS the comics at that point. So it's not like they had anything else to adapt.
Frankly I want to see this universe's version of Superboy return. He needs to come back, he was the best animated version of Conner.

These movies seem to understand Damian better than comic writers do sometimes, and I think that's nice.
Is the New 52 part of DCAU? Sorry New fan.
@@monsemaniaa not quite
E
I fully agree
I debate on a lot of characters being in these movies

Just a small detail, Alan Burnett is a legend for sure, but he only wrote a couple episodes of "Justice League Unlimited", and a dozen episodes of "Batman:TAS"... he was more involved in "Superman:TAS", for which he wrote almost every episode.
Also, "Mask of the Phantasm" wasn't only written by Burnett, it was a group effort between him, Paul Dini, Batman:TAS writer Michael Reaves and a few others.
Anyway, Burnett is a legend and it was an honor having him write so many DC shows/movies, may he enjoy his retirement ("Hell to Pay" was his final gig before he decided he was "too old for this shit"©)

Agreed
Same here, I really loved all of these movies and I personally thought they were great. I can acknowledge the flaws many people point out though.
The DCAU was my favorite connected universe personally and I hated Apocalypse War, in my opinion it seemed like needless violence to brutally end a universe I had grown fond of.
Not to mention Superman would never be so stupid.
There's a reason the Justice League early 2000's animation was great. The story telling and characters were far superior.
My friend, that has been DC's biggest weakness ever since it started: *Too much Batman.*
Unfortunately, this issue eill never be solved as long as there's desperate fanboys who want to see whichever "Generic angtsy teen sidekick" they happen to be head over heels with at the time, like children collecting action figures.
Sadly, it seems that not that many people love Swamp Thing... the first season of his TV show was super promising, but nobody was watching it so it got axed.
On the other hand, *Batwoman* , a show that also tanked with the audience, somehow got 3 seasons;
For shame!
What makes it crazy? The Reverse Flash is ALWAYS ahead. In the DC animated universe he was ahead in Flashpoint Paradoxon too.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 I respect your take.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 it’s still top tier season 4 is better season 3 might be a disappointment and disgrace but 1, 2, and 4 make up for that
@@o.8.p149 You might, MIGHT have had a point about S1.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 I mean I’ve also always hated the time skips but at least all of those seasons were better than season 3
These movies made me love and appreciate DC a lot more again. This video makes me want to buy the entire DC animated movie universe films, thanks.
Well kind agree
I saw Apocalypse War as someone finally making a movie where the heroes tried their best and still lost
I’d be curious to hear what you think of Swamp Thing and Young Justice. Both are, in my opinion, the best shows DC has put out since the close of the DCAU with the end of Justice League Unlimited.
Which is sad. One got cancelled too early and the other shouldn't have been revived.
Harlequin is actually pretty amusing. Not an emotional powerhouse like it wants to be, but still a lot of fun just being itself
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 Temple OS, my nigga.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 Still infinitely better than the DCAMU.
It is also an actual continuation of Green Lantern The Animated Series. Which is one of DC’s best shows.
Damien and raven is the best thing from this verse
It's done
I REALLY MISS watching the DCAU 😥.there are still a lot of untold stories I'm sure are yet to be told..LET'S FLASHPOINT THAT!!
Watching Justice League: War was like watching Avengers for the first time. It was the perfect blueprint for what a JL movie. Great characterizations!
I wanted to see more Green Lantern movies from this universe but what we got instead was DC nerfing the shit out of Hal Jordan and not allowing him to live up to his fullest potential
Can we get another universe based on the DC Earth One storylines, DC?
I liked these movies…except Dark Apokolips.
The first time I saw it, I was struck by how dark and violent it was.
The second time, I was struck by how poorly it was written.
Yeah, i watched it once and hated it, ironically jl war is my favorite, the plot wasn't conplicated but the execution was class
The DC Animated Movie Universe was unquestionably one of the universes ever
(The snyderverse is better off dead and phase 4 is just disappointing)
Also, despite being a jsa fan I did not enjoy jsa ww2.
Crazy how everyone went from respecting them to just unanimously letting them go.
oh hell naw, a lot of people actually starting to like it. then WB decided to end the universe, telling fans to look somewhere else for fun.

I gotta say, as a GL fan, I REALLY have my gripes with this universe. But, even with the sour taste it left in my mouth, especially with the overuse of Batman, I gotta say, I still loved the best moments of this journey. I think these would have hit a lot better if it was tied into an animated series, like imagine if there was a Justice League and a Teen Titans show that built up to some of the movies like Death of Superman and Reign of Superman.
Glad there’s a new one. If you’re wondering, it’s Justice Society WW2 (I think that is what it’s called), Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Batman: Long Halloween, and a new Green Lantern movie coming out.
the best part about the finale movie was Raven and Damion
Dude I was obsessed with this universe as a child but no one else knew about it in my school
I thought these movies were great. I loved watching through all of them!

I absolutely love both the young justice universe and this dc animated universe, lucky for us we got a continuation of young justice but unfortunately I don’t think we will get any more from this, I was fine with the huge bat family centred-ness of these movies because it made me like these characters a lot more (I actually enjoyed Damien’s character from the start and I loved to seeing nightwing)
I would have loved to see more from the teen titans in this universe, both the speedy kid flash bumblebee era titans could have been shown in a movie showing how we got to the current JL vs TT lineup and I feel like we could have gotten more from the post Judas contract titans, they even teased new members ,then maybe the sudden growth (age and maturity wise) that raven and Damien had in the last movie wouldn’t have felt like we had missed so much of what happened in between to finally have gotten to this point.
After Under The Red Hood, the DC's animated stories went down the crapper, because of studio executives getting involved.
The Talon fight was so well choreographed
Honestly it's kinda fitting constentean is punished by the universe itself since his main power is being loved by it
I just want them to make straight comic adaptations instead of altering things and trying to make all the movies fit together.
They should consult the creators again, like they did in Batman red hood and Superman vs the elite, to have the true vision of the stories
To be fair Superman vs the Elite did actually change some stuff despite being written by the same guy
@@mikemorro140 the changes were made by the writer himself, and i like the changes made in the movie, i actually like the movie more than the comic because we get to explore more of the characters.
Same with under the red hood, the writer made the story much more cohesive.
If you’re interested, they made the long Halloween into a 2 part movie.
I don’t care what anyone says, “Justice League: Apokolips War” is one of the greatest animated superhero movies I’ve ever seen

The way you broke down this video and universe was absolutely beautiful!!
Out of all the ones i have seen, which is a good portion, i only really liked Death of Superman. It really made me cry at the end, which means the movie did a great job at making me care about the characters.
Apokolips war fucking hurt to watch.
Seeing your favorite characters get fucked up as they would is depressing. But the ending does help
I actually looooved the DC animated movie universe.its fantastic
Raven and Robin ship worked really well. Change my mind.
By making Raven into Hinata 2.0 ?
War and JLD were bad tho.
One turned Darkseid into a Thanos wannabe (that's how weak he was) and JLD needed Batman to sell itself.
I honestly preferred the supes-wonderwoman relationship, it seems more natural
I honestly loved their depiction of Damion Wayne and his whole arc, hope it’s continued
they kept disrespecting nightwing and I can’t forgive that
“Super hero’s need to win EVERY TIME, while villains only need to win once.”
This is a really good universe , true there are mistakes with basis like continuty errors between timelines , lack of traditional characters and all that, but simply these are very enjoyeble movies in their own way with a great artstyle
i was 9 years old when they released the first movie in 2014,and 15 by the apokilips war in 2020, i grew up as this timeline evolves , i always enjoyed watching clips of one of these movies or movies themselves when i had a free time
I love dcamu❤️
idk, the artstyle just aint for me, apparently its by the same guy who did young justice seasons 1 and 2 but it seems to me his designs have gotten alot less refined and bulky, and it doesn't help they have such low budgets.
I don't remember how or when I stumbled across your channel, but I absolutely love Love LOVE your videos bro! Digging that song during the ending credits!
The recent Constantine short movie is badass.
Sue me.
You're not alone, these movies made me love Damian and Raven and Damians relationship. I thought it was beautiful
starfire's intestines falling out will always haunt me.
but also i live for damien/raven (only in this universe really) and i wish they'd gotten together sooner and not in literally the last few minutes of their existence
My only problem with them is that they wasted Aquaman
I don’t generally enjoy Movie Critique channels because all they do complain. But you are fair; seeing the good in imperfect movies. Keep up the good work
What if whenever flash does his time travel shenanigans instead of editing a timeline he’s just abandoning the one he’s in for a new one?
