  • The recreational scuba diving depth limit is set to 132 ft (40 m) for a reason, and dives like the ones on this video are just one issue away from being deadly.

They are lucky it didn't go bad. They had so many strikes against them. 1)Dude was narc'd 2) He couldn't convey to his buddy he was narc'd 3) they were far apart that far down 4) they only had 1 tank of air 5) they were doing multiple things like looking at the fish, the structure, all while not watching their guages 6) if ANY of those things went bad they were screwed. If he passed out and sank, screwed. If his buddy became narc'd bad too, screwed. If one panicked that deep and ran low on air, screwed. Not enough decompression time, screwed. This was 1 tiny mistake away from tragedy.

Yup, I've never been diving much less this deep, but from everything I've heard, it's easy to become complacent because of the narcosis and task loading is what kills many divers, narc'ed or not. Really dangerous thing to do and exactly why Dive Talk exists.

One of the scariest to think about is if he passed out and started sinking. He thinks his buddy is there to save him, but to go after you, he will get narc'd for sure going deeper, use more air going deeper, use more air getting you back up, adding decompression time to his dive the deeper he goes and the longer it takes... it's a snowball effect that's not good. To have to make the choice of saving my buddy knowing there's a good chance I might die or just watching him die are not great choices. As a responsible adult, you are absolutely irresponsible for putting a buddy in a position to have to make that decision. Not to mention that's not being a buddy at all. Putting your buddies life in jeopardy is not something I look for in a buddy.

Unfortunately, we see this all too frequently. On our home island of St. Croix, we can do a 10-minute swim out from shore and dive a wall that descends over 3000'. About once a month, we hear a story of someone going to almost 200' on a single tank of air.
Last year this behavior resulted in at least three serious diving-related injuries and one death. Every time we hear of someone diving like this in our backyard, we cringe, try to educate them, and tell a couple of heartbreaking stories in the hopes of changing their behavior. Thanks for this video guys. We're going to share the sh** out of it.

With proper training and adherence to basic safety rules, scuba diving is very very safe. Depending on one's experience, and the conditions of the dive site, like Tropics verse colder water, temperatures, currants, visibility, adherence to proper decompression limits like having a proper computer Exedra, is pretty safe! if Done Right. 170 feet, at least in the tropics, and should not be done by amateurs and without proper training and safety backups, is not that deep, and can be done safely. While I do not recommend this for undertrained amateurs, as a scuba instructor and a lifetime diver, I'm 53 and I've been diving since the 70's, let me be clear I do not recommend this for most recreational certified sport divers, but 170 feet in the tropics is not undoable. Let me be clear, I am saying most should not do this and definitely if you're not a professional, but my maximum depth on normal compressed air is 300 feet. Of course this is decompression diving and not recreational diving. But these amateurs both the diver and the commenters are just that amateurs. Neither the diver who filmed this nor the people commenting AR lifetime professional, knowledgeable scuba divers period. Social media is full of amateurs trying to look cool. Such a sign of the times today

On my first deep dive, we had about 5 or six divers and a veteran leader. I just had an aluminum-80 but we stayed together and stopped twice on two sandy flat spots and briefly stopped at 175 feet. we then used our compensators to rise like slow elevators. Did not get narced. On other occasions I got pleasantly narced at about 95 feet but realized I felt too good. My buddy was watching a conch crawl across the bottom and I noticed that he also seemed narced so I tapped on his pressure guage and motioned thumbs up. He was not aware, at first, that he was narced but enjoyed the feeling on the way up.

Most of the time was using 120 and later went to an OMS 112cf . Like the video stated beware of your prey even though they’re smaller a lighter they can take you up or down quickly and you don’t realize till you’re in trouble . Unfortunately a lot of us were old school and learned the hard way, as it evolved. While your in the correcting people mode. Only one of those fish he shot a was grouper and non of them were Big Lionfish. They are excellent eating, though. One of my favorites. They have pretty much taken over the gulf. We only use to see them over in the Atlantic. Those tower's they were diving are in the gulf off La. For that clarity they were probably over 600ft, with most being 2-4,000ft. Most of the diving on them has been with air 150-200 ft. With the occasional 250ft., by the locals. Back in the early 70's, I was trained to breath directly from the tank, in the event you had some type of reg. failure. In over 2k dives, I have only needed to do it once, when I cut a hose. I was no big deal. I have spearfished up to 310ft. Quite a bit at 200, on nitrox. My reflexes are quicker and my detail memories of the diver are much better on Trimix, which I've only been doing the last 30yrs or so. It is common practice commercial spearfishing, to dive down to around 22ft. with a single tank and a bailout/deco bottle. With just regular maintenance and good equipment, we just never have issues. Not saying their isn't any danger. A number of years ago there was a retired navy seal that lost his life on one of our dives in a spearfishing tournament. So no one is bulletproof!

Perhaps 20/25 dives of that nature - to this day I descend and dive fast -

I get slight nitrogen narcosis but not much . The thing with that depth is how little time you have because of how fast your air is used at that depth ! . Def a risky depth snd shouldn’t be attempted by rookies .. even with deco mix stage bottles it’s not a good idea on straight air mix and single tank diving .
Twins and trimix with proper stage deco bottles to do it safe !

Granted most should not try this it was a multi-stage Deco dive, but it can be done. The record in St Croix in the 90s when I was there, was done by a college professor, who trained repeatedly, took some safety measures and his record was 450 ft. Of course he never made it back and no one found him on his 500-foot attempt with compressed air..🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ So yeah kind of dumb and crazy but can be done semi safely if you know what you're working with

The reason he isnt shooting all the lionfish is that reloading the speargun can be a really hard task and you want to look for the perfect shot..Also the fact that alot of them are close to the metal legs of this platform and shooting into those will damage your spear. Love the channel guys.

I did many 175 to 200 foot dives in the gulf of Mexico, by myself, because nobody would go with me on sunken shrimp boats! I only had about five minutes of bottom time, I go back up to the boat get another tank and go straight back down, I found that if I went down the third time I would start narcing while on the wreck so I would only do 2 dives from then on! Did great spearfishing On those wrecks and never had a problem, In fact, I’ve done hundreds of dives, and never had a problem ever I had two regulators, one spare which was used to help other divers if they had a problem! In terms of narcosis, the worst dive I ever did was an advanced technical "acclimation" dive on air down to 200' to see some cold water hard corals. This was in the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest (Sunshine Coast, BC Canada). Gear wasn't an issue as I was in a tri-laminate Typhoon drysuit, twin 120 lp steels, dual cross-over manifold, scuba pro D400 regs, canister light, safety reel and bag, etc. What made it such a crappy dive was how close I came to meeting Oxygen Pete at 200'. At 200' I was narc'd out of my mind, had a metallic taste in my mouth, extreme tunnel vision and general feeling of "I really don't give a shit about anything". I stopped at 200' (planned depth) and even though I really felt like dying, I completed the planned time at depth. Wasn't until I finally went up and around 180' or so, my mind and body started to clear and the instant thought of "Why the f*ck didn't I just go UP and stop this madness" hit me. I finished out the dive and the only cool thing on the deco stops was as I was deco-ing on a cliff wall, a big 5' dog shark came out of the blue and swam right in to my chest. I saw it coming from about 50' away and watched it swim in to me.wondering what the heck it was doing. It hit me like a really slow moving torpedo, right in the chest. Kinda laughed as it nosed in to my chest and I pushed it away...and it turned away from me and swam off and away. I never went that deep again on air and never would again. I do see from my logs that the second dive of the dive was only to 136'

Oh, as for going deep on a single tank, I have a little anecdote for you. A friend of mine, who's a fellow instructor, tech instructor, and wreck diver, told me about one dive trip he did with an open water student. This was at Sipadan, which is a beautiful island reef in the middle of nowhere with sheer rock cliffs down to 800m or so. So, he takes his student out on his first open water dive, and this student was really fascinated by the shark, and they ended up resting on a ledge at about 65m, and the punchline of his tale was "you're going to have to do a deco stop", and he chuckles. And I'm standing there in disbelief looking at him thinking "you let an open water student do what?!" He's an SSI instructor btw. Oh, no, sorry it was SDI.

Okay, maybe someone else can make that shorter but you get the idea.

Commercial diving In Samoa we dove to 110ft to 120Ft to lay cable (directing the barge to avoid obstructions) with a strong cross current .... protection divers to keep the tiger sharks at bay at about 40ft to 60 ft,,, there were a lot of them. Decompression was rise to the "escape" boat in one jaunt with no stops to board a speed boat with twin 50hp outboards, again... straight up from 110 ft +/- with no stops... get run back to near shore at high speed and dropped to 40 ft depth with a six pack of beer and a couple of magazines to "decompress" for a few hours. Back in the day..... "This is the way!". Makes me crack a smile when I see the current "safety" protocols. We did this for a week and never had an 'Incident" . I would however caution anyone doing this with a fresh sunburn... as somehow the pressure drives the water under your skin to an extent that showering when you finally surface will lead to your outer layer of skin peeling off in a mass sludge.

There was an article which tells the story of a tragic weekend when things went badly wrong. One diver got bent and was flown to the naval base. The others in the group continued ,the first diver would dive to 250' and a second diver would bring an extra tank for his ascent and deco. But the boat started to sink so the divers were too busy to consider the in water guy. He had to surface and got bent ,he was also flown to the naval base ,but because his mate was partially into treatment ,it was decided to place him into a one man transport chamber. Unfortunately he died. Diving practice changed after that.

I dive the rigs out of Freeport a lot and mainly on rebreather. There are TONS of lionfish down there. They start at 100 ft or so and get bigger the deeper you go. We took 75 off 5 rigs in one day. But unless you have a three prong pole spear and a zookeeper then you don’t want to mess with shooting them when you only have a gun. With a gun you have two options… you either leave it on your spear and that’s your only shot for the dive, or you use a pair of scissors on a knife you brought down and clean off the venomous spines and put on your stringer. But that takes a few minutes and time is valuable at this depth. I bring a zookeeper and a gun. I’ll try to make a video sometime. Also go watch this guys other video where he shoots a world record fish.

Actually only supposed to be 200' but, as he, got narced and was distracted by an irritation or, I guess, annoyance would be a better word. Turns out I needed to clear my ears. BOY, once I did that...WOO! The narc really kicked in and before I knew it...260'. This was at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Reef started at 80' and dropped straight to around 140', then silt sand at a 70 degree grade for thousands of feet. We had submarines pinging us. Luckily, the only thing that happened was I swallowed air and spent a couple hours on the beach belching and farting.
