You can. And in that sense, it is NOT just "wherever you happen to find it", but rather, where the laws of physics guarantee that it must be.

I will probably never prospect for gold, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. A very efficient communication of principles that should be obvious but are not. I watched a different video for over an hour and didn't learn any where near as much.
Anyone who has prospected for any length of time, and consistently makes a profitable income from it, knows that this is true. It's just like poker - it's POSSIBLE for any hand to win the game. You could say that "a royal flush is where you find it"... but that doesn't make it worth staying in every hand just for that small chance. So successful players fold a LOT. Likewise, successful prospectors pass on 95% of the places they sample and only work the best. Gold follows rules, and so must we.
There are some exceptions to the rule of that impermeable layer (where gold is usually found in that foot or two above bedrock or some other dense layer of material). I recently heard of a miner here in Alaska that was hiking through an area of recent landslide on the side of a hill. He literally saw and picked up a 60 oz nugget off the ground that was released with other gravels by this landslide. The law of probabilities still applies to gold but it is not 100%.
Oh, the stories are often true but they're akin to being dealt a royal flush in 5-card draw. It just doesn't happen that often. Far better chance of being struck by lightning than finding a nugget just laying around. Not to say it doesn't happen - so does getting stuck by lightning :)
I think that nugget is what this guy refers to as "last year's gold." If someone hadn't come along by chance and picked it up, eventually it would have been pushed by the forces of nature (gravity, water, wind) to a lower spot where it would have stopped when it hit bedrock or something like bedrock. So you could walk around on land recently exposed in a landslide and hope you find a giant nugget, OR you could find the spot where nuggets like this one that have become exposed throughout thousands of years could have moved to and stopped. (At least that's what I think this guy's message is.)
It can be, it's just a question of whether the gold is in the river or not. It's usually outside the crest of soil caused by the waterfall's splash zone

I used to dredge in California before the idiot Ahhnold signed a bill outlawing it. Moonbeam also signed a bill to continue the ban. I mainly went to the American River, but also did some on the Bear, Yuba and Feather Rivers and tributaries. This guy is giving you the basics of how and where to look for gold. The suction eddy behind a rock or other obstruction will typically concentrate more gold than a pressure eddy will in front of the rock, but you may get lucky and find larger pieces in the front. Tree roots and moss along the banks can be productive. A good thing to look for dredging are the deep channels in the main water flow. As you dredge them keep an eye out for mercury covered gold. It looks much like lead. A good way to test it is to use a Garrett Gravity Trap gold pan and drag the piece across the bottom of the wet pan. If it streaks, it's probably lead. You can also use a flame or acid to burn it off, but be sure to stay upwind from the smoke & fumes. Since mercury is liquid it flows to the lowest spots in the channels, and it sticks to gold like a magnet to iron. Good luck to all you gold seekers. I really learned something new today thanks so much to this guy! Thank you so much, you are so intelligent and so giving. May blessings follow you to your next gold exhibition!
Usually where I find good high bank gold, it is also good if not better in the water. However, a lot of areas, the water has been worked over, and the banks have been ignored.... which is part of the reason you hear guys say sample sample sample
"Gold is where you find it" is an adage...a proverb...a traditional saying. Taking an adage too literally is a sign of taking yourself too seriously. As it turns out, people who find a lot of gold do not try to convince other people that they know everything about finding gold, or that they can disagree with age-old adages that old timers found clever. They just quietly collect it.
You just need to get out there with a pan and start sampling; I'll have a video uploaded soon on how to do that, so make sure you subscribe. It helps if you know gold has been found in your immediate area, so it narrows down the places to look.
Unexpected; not inexplicable. Certainly it is "where you find it" - so are cars and air and, well, everything. Of course it is where it is. The literal meaning of the words I don't dispute; but it is used in gold-prospector parlance to mean that you can't know where it is, or that it might be here just as well as somewhere else, and "just go dig someplace, after all gold is where you find it" - and that just isn't true. It is far more likely to be some places than others.
Certainly appreciate the information on finding gold, although I live in Northern Ohio&don't think we're much of a "hotspot" around here. Happy hunting!
plenty of people that are deaf can talk rather well. usually not if you've been deaf your whole life, but generally people who have lost hearing later on in life.
The guy knows his stuff and that’s what I care about. But just for the record I’m hearing impaired and have trouble with some words and that’s all I’m going to say about it.
+Michael Jo If you're born deaf, you're never able to hear how words are pronounced. You speak based on lip reading and copying mouth movements, and never really speak very well. But for people who develop deafness later in life after they've learned how to speak, their quality of speech diminishes over time, because they don't realize the subtle pronunciation changes they're making as their ability to hear themselves speak lessens. I had no hearing problems until I was about 16. I'm 37 now, and I'm legally deaf. I speak very well with my hearing aids in, but with them out I not only speak less clearly, I can fumble over or repeat words because I'm second guessing how I'm saying them, since I can barely hear myself speak. Thankfully in my situation, we have hearing aids and even some surgery options. Unfortunately for you, there are no intelligence aids or surgeries that fix stupid.
Good info. I just bought a panning kit, and this video is really helpful only problem is that i live in waushara county, wisconsin.. the rivers and creeks here are almost completely sand and muck. Theres ocassionally a row or patch of basketball sized rocks, i dont know if theyre close to bedrock or not... i did try with a shallow frisbee and im pretty sure i found 3 tiny flakes. It seems like gold judging from the video i watched on how to classify it.
make a video about what you explained here, I will gladly watch it and comment on what I can help out with. Identification, best practices for that area, what places to sample and how based on your area... etc
A good video for explaining the most common deposition type, but the reason people say "gold is where you find it" is that sometimes it settles in areas where you do not expect to find it. For example, you could have an outside bend, where you should not find gold, but perhaps thousands of years ago it used to be an inside bend that was collecting gold for a long time. Sometimes you find a big nugget in the middle of a river. Sometimes you find it waaay up high in the trees. It is most likely where you say, but it is also any other place that gravity works. I have worked a river, which is not supposed to have any gold at all, and found a huge boulder on the inside bend, dug way down to a false bedrock and found nothing, over and over again, nothing. I try another spot, which doesn't look likely at all, and find big flakes and small nuggets, and I'm not even at bedrock. there's a lot of karst, so maybe before a natural bridge collapsed and formed a canyon there was some deposited here or some other cataclysmic event changed the path of the river dramatically, but it's a river that should not have gold, on a bend that should not have gold, and a pay layer that should not be where it is. It is where you find it. Damn, there is not even a gold bearing mineralization in the entire drainage, for dozens of miles in any direction, or any geological formations where it is typically, or even atypically found. Karst, man. Limestone.
Placer gold (gold in pieces) is never found under the bedrock, by definition. If it were, it would be in veins in hard rock and there is no practical way for small scale hard rock mining most of the time.
He seems to have alot of good info. But i am having a hell of a time understanding him sometimes. It would be better if he didn't shoot from in the tree across the river. I really just want to suck in the info, those 2 things are making it a little harder. But still great info!
real stupid question but I figured Id ask anyway.... I was out off roading a while back and a few days before I was there a large thunder storm came through and made the wash next to the road overflow onto the road. While I was driving through these areas I noticed there was tons of black sands on the road, In a few places it was inches deep, this is an area with historic gold mining so is there a good chance that black sand has gold in it? or is that probably crap left over from the mining operations of years past and already picked clean? or its just hit and miss?
Please be very careful when "digging" or sluicing out behind large rocks or trees, its extremely dangerous! He doesnt mention but with the river flowing adding pressure and you remove the dirt behind it, what's likely to happen should be obvious, but the rock will lose grip an be dislodged, YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE BEHIND IT WHEN IT HAPPENS! Be safe, my uncle died this way
I used to work for Hope Jones. Her 75 acres in Tucson Arizona. Fifteen horses in about 10 dogs. In the late 80s early 90s. Quite a cowgirl. Loves horses, more than people. Well over three hundred acres in redfield canyon. Cliff House. Another house, a few acres, from The Cliff House. Some. A##hole swiped everything out of it. Then set it on fire, burn it to the ground.
The glories of finding bits of gold. Shifting through a bunch of crap for flakes of gold. Kinda like watching adult cartoons. It’s mostly crap but very once and a while there is a bit.

And your problem is??? The guy is brave enough to make a decent video and all you are concerned about is as speech impediment??? Go look in your mirror O perfect one!
The way he says here .its here not herow
I laughed out loud at your gold in the tree comment.
Thanks man i learned alot. I have a creek below my house that has alot of exsposed bedrock. Whats the best way to get it out of the water other than a exspensive dredge?
Keep watching the rest of these videos you'll see how I do it :)
Some strange comments here, great little production, well shot and written. Thank you
agreed
*rell shot and witten*
Yeah it is good info,
and hes not deaf u rejects!
That's not very nice.
I really learned something new today thanks so much to this guy! Thank you so much, you are so intelligent and so giving. May blessings follow you to your next gold exhibition!
this makes sense.....i’ve seen so many videos where the guys goes straight to the banks ......thank you for sharing
It helps if you know gold has been found in your immediate area, so it narrows down the places to look.
love the video very educational thanks for the imput
Unexpected; not inexplicable. Certainly it is "where you find it" - so are cars and air and, well, everything. Of course it is where it is. The literal meaning of the words I don't dispute; but it is used in gold-prospector parlance to mean that you can't know where it is, or that it might be here just as well as somewhere else, and "just go dig someplace, after all gold is where you find it" - and that just isn't true. It is far more likely to be some places than others.
Thank you for your knowledge
Certainly appreciate the information on finding gold, although I live in Northern Ohio&don't think we're much of a "hotspot" around here. Happy hunting!
"Glacial gold" is being found in Missouri, no big nuggets but it's there
Excellent video and explanation! This novice thanks you for sharing your time and wisdom.
Thanks for the offer, but I love my gold far beyond it's intrinsic value. I'd have to be very hungry to part with it :)
Give the guy a break. He is deaf.
Grid Iron no he's not, deaf people do not talk like that or that well for that matter, he has a speech inpedement.
plenty of people that are deaf can talk rather well. usually not if you've been deaf your whole life, but generally people who have lost hearing later on in life.
what does it even matter??
Please make more videos
I would, but I have nothing left to say. The only other thing I wanted to talk about was dredging, but unless/until California legalizes that...
Just do what I do, get creative! I have used many different items to get through the dirt fast - where power can not be used.
@@HowToDrillAWell cool man thanks. I love your videos your information has made all the difference for me.
Identification, best practices for that area, what places to sample and how based on your area... etc
Gold is literally everywhere, the placer vain runs from Vermont to California.. look for quart's and black sand, rust and orange colored rock ...
few weeks half a oz thats sad
Sounds like someone who hasn't prospected much :) That's actually a terrific haul
that was my thought too - I wish I could find that much that fast (speaking in context here, no machines or large claims)
Not everything is work when you do it as a hobby!
Karst, man.
Limestone.

Wait what If the gold is under the bedrock... you cant mine that
Placer gold (gold in pieces) is never found under the bedrock, by definition. If it were, it would be in veins in hard rock and there is no practical way for small scale hard rock mining most of the time.
HowToDrillAWell it was a joke related to minecraft
@@comradesvanticki4786 Ah, I totally didn't get that. You young people and your video games.
He seems to have alot of good info. But i am having a hell of a time understanding him sometimes. It would be better if he didn't shoot from in the tree across the river. I really just want to suck in the info, those 2 things are making it a little harder. But still great info!
Great explanation. Felt very honest
I like the way this guy talks.
Ewww I hate doze waskawee wabbits!
Nice informational vid. Thanks for taking your time.
Thanks so much for the info. Gonna get out and find some gold. Oh and you earned a subscription.. Great video keep em coming
this title makes no sense
Very informative.
Thank You!!!
I agree, hearing things in different context, even if its the same information, is good. This guy presents it very well
Great video, thanks for sharing it with us!!!!
lol herall
Thank you for the video appreciate your time and knowledge
If its not where you find it then where the hell is it i found it right here so it is here not there
real stupid question but I figured Id ask anyway....
Not a stupid question at all. Yes, most likely you were look at gold, as well as black sand, from the description of the setting.
Good question.
Great video most amazing informative video on gold I’ve ever heard .
Outstanding Presentation, thanks for your efforts in producing this fine video! One of the best channels on All of You tube! SUBSCRIBED !
Tjay WASHINGTON
YEAH RIGHT !!! SURE PALE AIN'T NO GOLD UPON THE RIVER .KEEP ON DIGGING TILL YOU DIG YOUR OWN GRAVE ...
Lol
Fishing AND panning??!! Summer is gonna be awesome.
Giant Yukon mosquitos
Thank you for the tips. Much appreciated!
Finally!....some real honest advice...thank you for sharing this!...🤙🏼🇺🇸✋🏼😀
Please be very careful when "digging" or sluicing out behind large rocks or trees, its extremely dangerous! He doesnt mention but with the river flowing adding pressure and you remove the dirt behind it, what's likely to happen should be obvious, but the rock will lose grip an be dislodged, YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE BEHIND IT WHEN IT HAPPENS! Be safe, my uncle died this way
Why you so far
I used to work for Hope Jones. Her 75 acres in Tucson Arizona. Fifteen horses in about 10 dogs. In the late 80s early 90s. Quite a cowgirl. Loves horses, more than people. Well over three hundred acres in redfield canyon. Cliff House. Another house, a few acres, from The Cliff House. Some. A##hole swiped everything out of it. Then set it on fire, burn it to the ground.
The glories of finding bits of gold. Shifting through a bunch of crap for flakes of gold. Kinda like watching adult cartoons. It’s mostly crap but very once and a while there is a bit.
again and again haters, listen up...don't be jealous of someone who has knowledge and the
joy to share with others who actually appreciate those in this world of HATERS too self
involved to step outside of their own inadequacies and stop being childish. Some of us
cherish these people and life is about learning.
Lighten up on the judging and stop acting like spoiled children. Grow up and let live.
Okay with you?
very good information, stuff I never thought of, thank you, I will most definitely subscribe.
