I have personally found three types of lay down patterns...one will set the gold down right behind it, another lays streaks of black sand and gold streaming on either side of the boulder and another that sets the gold down in a bunch 3 or more feet downstream of the rock. My assumption on that is that in certain conditions, a boil out can occur. I always sample in those 3 places for that reason. Nice Job.

This is a good demonstration of the principals of prospecting for gold in a river. But, a definition of terms is needed here. For our purposes, soil is an organic material (a once living plant or animal) and will only be found in stagnant bodies of water as it is very light and is washed away easily. Dirt is a catch all word for materials including clays and loam etc. What you encounter while prospecting in rivers, streams, etc. are rock (mineral) gradations. In other words rock aggregates. These aggregates can be processed or classified according to size, usually done with screens, but including other methods. For example: if a rock can pass a one inch by one inch opening in a screen, but is retained on a three quarter inch opening on another screen, it is nominally classified as one inch material. And so on down to very fine material which is classified by the number of openings in a one inch by one inch area of screen. This material is generally called sand or fines and is still a mineral material. So when sampling for Gold, we are not looking for organic materials (dirt or soil), but for relatively heavy minerals such as black sand which contains iron. A trip to your local sand and gravel (aggregate mining) operation will demonstrate quickly how materials are processed, segregated, classified, and possibly cleaned of organic materials. A running river segregates materials according to size and weight naturally. That is what this man is teaching you.

It's funny how "half" of the videos about finding gold on RUclips says there is a *LOT* of gold waiting out there (showing pans full of nuggets), while the other half says there is almost none. I appreciate your telling the *truth* about technique and availability.
Best to go talk to the local forest service or BLM office. Some places it's fine, others it's against the rules but never enforced, other places it's strictly forbidden. Maps do exist, but I haven't found any I like. Forest service has some that show public land/vs private, but don't show claims. I am working with a guy who has a great idea for mapping out claims, which may be available later this fall. But for now, start with that; and/or any gold supply stores (most areas with gold have one)

Does anybody know of a good place to pan for gold in west Tennessee preferably the lower part of west Tennessee I would love to try this. Even bought a gold pan at a yard sale.
I have a large creek running thru my 80 acres unfortunately Arkansas isn’t suppose to be a good state for gold but I’m going to pan it anyway . Quartz and precious stones are what Arkansas is famous for , how do you find those??

See, the difference between a bank and the channel is that the channel sorts the gold much better than the bank. So on the bank, you'll see some gold on top - small amounts - because there isn't much current to move the gold down. But in the channel, it's much much more likely to be buried. If you get down to the bedrock, you'll likely find much more gold in the channel than on the bank.
Just go anywhere you want and if you are not welcome you will find a locked gate. Ignore no tresspassing signs as they are just everywhere and if they could be enforced there would be a locked gate. If an area is claimed it should be marked properly. If not, it is yours to prospect.If someone tells you it is theirs, ask them where the marks are. If he cannot. Ignore his bullshit.Be respectful of genuine claim owners and landowners and ask permission where practical.
Have you ever been met with violence following this advice? I'd like to think that shooting at claim jumpers is a relic, but I'm a greenhorn. There's an area where I'd like to prospect with 40+ year old claim markers. No way they are still valid. Thanks in advance.
i went to a far creek there were exposed big roots and i dug a sample pan there and nothing. in stream nothing. in shoreline with little roots chaching some flakes and specks!. Gold is sometimes were you don't expect it.
Need to make a video of certain water ways that are likely to have gold as opposed to where to find them in a certain river. Are smaller streams likely to have gold? Have a stream close to house that is very hilly and has big hills flowing down to the water way which I'm assuming means it's been there for a long time but doesnt have alot of water running through. Would that be a decent place to look...?
I have never panned for gold in my life having lived in the New England area rather than out west. However, any other video I have watched shows the actual panning being done on the ridged side of the pan, not the smooth side which you used. I believe the ridges are to catch the gold, whereas the smooth side of the pan would just let it slip out. Am I correct? Enjoying the vids tho'..... Even tho' we'd probably never find anything in this area, I think it would be a fun thing to do with my grandson this summer so I'm going to order a pan online. We already have a metal detector we can use, too. Thanks for a lot of good ideas!
The grooves are for the earlier parts, to retain the gold when you're being more aggressive. Near the end, you have to use the flat side otherwise the turbulence required to remove the last bit of black sand will stir up and lose the gold.

+Myles Nicholas Not practically, because what winds up happening is that tiny bits of magnetic sand catch the magnet within seconds. So no information is really gathered that way, just black sand.
+Myles Nicholas There are ways to use magnets on the underside of a sluice box to remove the magnetite and other "unwanteds" - but it only acts as an additional classification method to filter out the stuff you dont want in your concentrates. The magnets do tell you a bit about the material you're processing but not much else. Keene does have a new(ish) drywasher that uses electrolytic action on a fine metallic mesh that supposedly can catch more of the small fine stuff due to the static charge it produces. But you can't necessarly use a drywasher everywhere. It depends how wet your material is and what methods you're using. Some people use drywashers down in Nevada/California because they can be used in remote, dry areas with no water source.
Im sorry but i have to agree. You cant say "this is how you find gold" and discredit everyone else's techniques, but your technique PANS OUT. Once you prove that your technique works, then you can go out teach people.

There is no way to tell just by asking those questions. That's why you have to sample, like this video shows.
