Not for a living, no. I think I could, but it's hard work and I make better money at my real job :) I just really enjoy doing it and have a knack for learning and improving things and then passing that information on to other people.
HowTo, I've got a bad back that hurts just watching you work. On the other hand thanks for posting this set of videos. They've been very informative for a novice like myself.
For a viewer, i use a 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out. Only a 1/4 inch lip is left, and i then cut a piece of 1/8 inch plexi that is siliconed in place from inside the bucket. Works beautifully and has a nice large viewing radius.
Yes, with this method in this location I was typically finding around 2-3 grams a day. The natural riffles really helped to concentrate the gold in this section of the river. This particular day was spent filming, not working, so I didn't actually find much. But I worked this same spot for several weeks and often hit 3 grams in a day. Never less than 1.
I find my fair share of gold with my metal finder thingy at the beach but i'm really interested in panning and your videos are a great tutorial .. you will be my 2nd subscribe ever.
Vinyl fencepost. I plan to make a video with full instructions for it and some of the other cool tools we developed this fall which will be a paid download on the WhereGoldIs website.
Glad you enjoyed them. Unfortunately I never really got all the bugs worked out of it, and as you watch more videos you'll see I found ways of cleaning most rocks without it.
I am very interested to see your hand powered dredge design/video. The only concern is that your assistant looked like she was struggling. It would have been nice to see the gold you had uncovered when you moved the rock.
I'd start with the first video in my series, "How to look for gold", and watch through all of them; do what I did and start with panning and as you get good at that work your way up.
What is the tool you are using to look at the gold underneath the water? have you made the video on how to make build that tool yet? Appreciate the video's
Cool videos you did. Enjoying your knowledge. I really want to go looking. In your videos can you educate us where we can go do this. I am in California. Thanks Caroline
As for the gold under the rock, it was almost impossible to get a shot of it because as soon as you pop the rock off, you release a lot of mud and it clouds the water for quite a while; by the time it clears, the gold has washed down to the bottom of the hole and been buried by gravels so you can't see it well. But the picture at 3:24 is fairly representative of it. Each one of those flakes was about the size of a sesame seed.
i have two questions plz first do u need any licensure or any permit from the state or the city.second where exactly can we buy those tools cuz they seems very helpfull and thannx
I know there is some gold in the rivers near Arches, but it's very fine particles and not profitable to work. When I was there last year there were gold pans for sale in one of the stores and I asked about it. Afraid that's all I know :)
Can you give us some info about your past.. Do you have advanced degrees..Geology or Mining? how long have you been doing the Alluvial search in rivers? and how long have you been doing the gold search..Did you start out drilling water wells? I have a degree in drilling oil and gas wells..and enjoy your tutorials ..they are very informative. Did you have a teacher or did you get your info from books? Thanks for sharing your experience..
Does it matter? A degree ONLY means you are *supposed* to know something, not that you *do*. Was told by another degree holder "That's Trig, thats NOT math!"
Dahlonega, Ga. first gold rush 1828... Dahlonega gold belt goes from Washington D.C. into Alabama... I live in Dahlonega and face powder to Nuggets are common in all streams within the belt... Where I live the belt is about 30 miles wide and is the purest in the world... The first gold mint was in Dahlonega and is now a part of the University of North Ga. campus...
The gold here in Virginia test out to be 23k or better and I here that Georgian gold test out to be 22k or better so we're tit for tat as far as purity concerns !!! I wonder if the yankee gold further north of us is as pure as ours here in the south ?
Are you sure it is illegal in your area? If it is and you don't want to get caught you will have to do it in a way that the Rangers will think no one is around, Get dropped off, walk or ride a bike to the area and hide the bike. Also set up the sluice in an area that is not seen from a road or trail. Ranger won't generally walk into places of the beaten path unless he suspects someone is there. Like if he sees a car parked and thinks the person is up to something. Scout the area before hand!!!!
Compressed rubber. Adjust the compression to control the tightness/movability of the seal. It's a bit of a pain to build, one reason I haven't made the video yet - still looking for improvements to the design.
well if you are ever in montana email me or something. it would be neat to learn from someone experienced first hand. cause i cant seem to find anything or anywehere to look. having trouble finding the diference between bedrock and everything else.also,im not very good yet im only 17 years old and dont much time to go exploring due to school.
Thanks for the detailed explanations. Makes it very easy to understand the methods to use. Notice this was made in 2013 - are you still panning for gold these days?
Sadly no, I had to move away from California so I don't have gold where I live now. Plus I feel like I said everything I could say on the subject of gold, unless and until California legalizes dredging.
@@nathanielburson8929 Sorry to hear you had to move away. I'm stuck in your boat though - no gold where I live otherwise I'd love to pick this up as a hobby.
Excellent videos. Just wondering...do you have to "declare" any of your gold findings to the government, and if so, is there a certain amount that is a "starting point"? For example, could we pan up to $999. but have to "declare" $1,000 and more? Also, who or where do you bring your gold in order to get the money for it?
No, as far as I know there are no laws regulating that. If there are, no one I've ever heard of follows them. I think if you are large scale (own a claim, run a mining operation) there are laws, but for recreational prospecting there aren't any about declaring the gold.
As for selling your gold, you can sell it in nugget/flake form on Ebay, or any gold-bearing area has people who buy gold - usually prospecting shops. Or you can have it refined yourself at a refinery. Typically you'll get paid about 85% of spot value for your raw gold.
that 'MineLab' Ad i just got....hmmm, i'll just stick to ol' fashioned panning for now :P ...These 5K $ detectors look like they may do the job, but i'm not convinced because the 'Ad' seems rather comercialsed........
Running the hand dredge isn't too hard, the struggle was mostly because the current was making it hard to stand up and she's not good at balancing. That's not to say it doesn't take some work, like all gold hunting it's hard work, but it's worth it. The video isn't filmed yet and when it is I will probably make it a pay download, like $5, because I have a lot of time in developing that concept. It will be available on my website this fall, I expect.
Unfortunately I never got that filmed because I never got all the bugs worked out of it. When it worked, it was great, when it didn't, which was often, it was a real pain. In the end, I found methods of prospecting that didn't require it. You'll see those in the later videos.
AFAIK, you never need a license or permit to prospect for gold on public land, UNLESS you intend to dredge. Check with the local BLM or USFS office to be sure. Any gold-bearing area should have at least one gold prospecting store and you can buy most of these tools there. Not the ones I invented of course, which I may sell myself one day - or at least have a how-to video on it. But that's not available yet :)
I had always intended to sell them, but never got around to it. I made mine out of a vinyl fencepost, with a square piece of plexiglass siliconed to the end.
4:30 .. what exactly do you mean by the gold getting washed away? It’s the heaviest material there isn’t it? And the stream doesn’t appear to be running very fast.
Nathaniel Burson thanks for the response :) I realize now that my question was a bit premature. Watching more videos I realized just how tricky the temperament was when working in even a weaker stream. I don’t think I will have much luck, but I wouldn’t mind trying this in Ontario, Canada lol.
Dude is definitely in new england somewhere i been all threw new england awhile ago and when i seen them tree's n shit first thing that popped into my head.. If not the. Idk.. Middle of the country up north lol
I don't know why you don't put a pile of rocks upstream from the dropoff to direct most of the flow elswhere. This would reduce the amount of water flowing over the area you were working in.
It's not always practical, or even possible, depending on the shape of the river. I do sometimes. But for this sucker, it helps to have good flow because it clears out the dirty water from stirring up the sediment layers.
No, I've never been hassled. You just need to go to the forest ranger's office and the BLM office and talk to them, see what the rules are, and get maps so you know what sort of land you're on. Finding gold takes some legwork before you actually get out there to start looking.

LOL!!......Serious you Rock (As I typed rock - you said "Rock" on the vid = Synchronicity!!).....I'm guessing you are an LSU Fan right? I'm sorry to say this...but wasting $40.00 in gas to get there and back, isn't going to be too profitable. With my method, I am guaranteed gold on demand, and it is where I look and find! As a matter of fact it is only 2.5 miles from my home here in Spokane, Wa. Now you may ask...where is this special spot for finding gold???Well it is called American Coin and Vault, and I am better suited for finding Silver, and it only cost's $18.08 per ounce, and a mere $.30 cents of gas! Now that is a perfect spot to go hunting for gold and Silver! And it is an open spot, without having to stake a claim! TAA-DAA! But remember this...You will have to come home with 1.4 grams of gold to break even, and that flour gold looks like a lot, but isn't really all that lucrative!
