It's amazing that Nintendo didn't include a charger with the New 3DS. They say an old cable will work. Problem is only DS I had was the original from 2004. And I learned my lesson through the 7 console revisions to wait on the 3DS, so no cable. It's only a couple bucks, but just annoying.
The C stick from the new 3ds reminds me of those shitty pieces of rubber between g, h and b keys in laptop keyboards to replace the mouse in the late 90's, early 2000's, the pointing stick. But for some reason, they disappeared. I hope nintendo didn't bring them back 15 years later...
They never disappeared. ThinkPads still have them. Even the ThinkPad Yoga. I still prefer the nub over touchpads because you don't have the problem of reaching the edge and having to lift up back to the center. They offer more control with less movement. One thing that touchpads now have over the nub is multitouch gestures. When they actually work correctly, at least.

First party eShop games in Japan seem to be $50-60 which is a little more expensive but that seems like it's barely justify importing. AU, though, from prices I've seen $50 was "budget" for DS games (above what US "premium" games cost).
Every kanji character has its own intrinsic meaning, as they are imports of chinese characters (each of which also have their own specific meanings). Japanese is kind of weird though because it actually does have writing that only corresponds to sounds such as hiragana and katakana (which are more commonly used in Japanese writing than kanji) as opposed to written Chinese which only has characters.
I think the name of the C stick was an artifact from when the C stick were actually C -buttons- on the Nintendo 64 arranged to resemble a D-pad. The C buttons were originally intended to control the camera in Nintendo 64 games (before developers started using them for other purposes). Thus, it's not hard to imagine it being named after this fact.

No, I don't believe they should only be played on the deck of a ship, as they can most certainly provide much amusement in the swimming pool, especially when your classmates nearly drown trying to retrieve them from the bottom of said pool!
We tended to reserve quoits for non-maritime purposes. Letting them fly into the sea due to an awfully misjudged throw was unthinkable. The black plastic brick was the preferred object for retrieval at the bottom of the pool. Ultimately, I think a quality quoit is too good for a ship. Speaking of which, how do you pronounce quoit? We always said it with a silent "u" (as if the "Qu" was the Q at the start of "Qatar").

After the fact my friend bought a new Nintendo 3DS XL... just the system. Although I knew it wouldn't come with the charger. Those who has the Ambassador Edition one, you guys are lucky. This is why I'm getting a 2DS first then the new 3DSXL because my 3DS XL broke and I don't know what will happen to the newer version. I couldn't transfer the data back to the 2ds from the new 3dsxl which sucks. That's why it's a good idea to get the 2ds first then upgrade after that. Plus, the 2ds is cheaper anyway and has a charger so I will have a new charger instead of a old one that I have for more than 4 years. The DSi that I have is already old and the battery is too old for me to play the system, the light is always red and the system dies out when you turn it on.
Look, I understand why people want to play quoits on ships, because I do too! It really is the best place to play it! Nothing is like the feeling! But not many people have access to ship decks and people who really love to play quoits such as me would not be able to play it very often. Yes some people say it should only be on ships because it wouldn't be the same and would ruin the charm of the game if it was played elsewhere but you see that wouldn't happen! Playing quoits on ship decks would still remain the perfect place and imagine the feeling of after playing it for weeks in your garden, you go on a ship and experience it on a ship. The feeling is absolutely mindblowing and I've experienced it myself. I really hope people understand that quoits should be allowed to b played everywhere. Otherwise it is quoits discrimination. Najja Mallace Are you aware buttons are not just placed into the plastic cast? There has to be internal space for that to work. There is none. Maybe in the XL, but definitely not in the small one. Card Slot and Stylus were moved so that the cover plates were more visible and the console looks nice from the sides. In the 2 weeks I've had the ambassadors I have not found problems with these 2 new locations, in fact it prevents idiot colleages from pressing the cartridge. Anyways, I find the c-stick much more confortable than the CPP I had on the XL.

The card slot doesn't change the shape or size of the back plate, theres no real reason to move it. The idea of moving the stylus simply for aesthetics is beyond stupid. The most plausible reason for making all these changes is so they can try to distinguish the system from all of the previous models. To get someone to buy a new product you need to make them feel that its been changed sufficiently.

I organize small tourneys in college and needed 2 3DS with capture cards to have big screen matches with Smash bros, so I bought the cards and installed them myself. There is literally no space to move the components around, and shrinking a custom motherboard like that to make room for it is very, very expensive. Shit, on my college projects with small budget companies some boards that are literally shit cost about 10k-100k to shrink a full 2% points in mass production. In fact, part of the reason they have a micro SD slot this time around instead of a full size SD is because it still lacks the necessary space. Now i'm pretty sure you'll tell me "then why not use micro SD in the first 3DS"? And I'll answer: licensing costs. At the time the original 3DS released they still had 2-3 years of SD licensing they got to use with the DSi and Wii, so why would they ever go through the trouble to ask for another license to have a half assed product with a secondary stick literally 3 games use? Again, the stylus was moved so that the cover plates didn't have more holes.
This is because of the Wii U. The xDS family on the other hand is totally dominating the handheld gaming market, now even moreso since Monster Hunter joined team Nintendo, the only franchise that kept the PSP alive. (Aside from Project Diva, but that one has started to become a cross-platform franchise.)

I wondered if the no charger thing was a world wide problem or just here in Australia. Absolutely fucking disgusting. I was very disappointed in Nintendo when I saw it. I've been meaning to actually contact the ACCC (Australian competition and consumer commission) about it because it really doesn't seem like it should be allowed. I mean, it flat out tells you the charger is required. It's like someone selling you a car then charging you an extra hundred bucks for the keys.

I would be fine with just the N3DSXL if the resolution wasn't so laughable. 800 (400 per eye in 3D)x240 on an almost 5 inch screen is ridiculous when I have a Vita with a 5 inch 960x544 screen and a smartphone at 1080p with a 5 inch screen. OR, how about, Nintendo gets with the times and makes it so the New 3DS is region free? Then I could just import one
There are definite benefits to using a lower res screen, and the screen quality is still a vast improvement over things in the past, so although it would be nice if they would release a HD model I can't see them doing so until it becomes efficient enough [GPUpower/battery/cost]. Also, their handhelds were always region free right up to the DS. What happened with the 3DS?
Borealis Johnson My girlfriend has an old 3DS XL and I can definitely tell the difference between my original and hers. Plus, I'm even fine with my Vita's at qHD, so it doesn't even have to HD, just a bit better, even doubling it would help. I get great battery life on my Vita (I know it only has one screen and no 3d) so I'm sure Nintendo could have squeezed in some better internals and kept the cost fairly cheap while maintaining battery life. My Vita was $200 new and has better internals (again, not factoring in a second screen and 3d) so I'm sure Nintendo could have found a way. Not sure WHY, but the 3DS is region locked. Very disappointing. Iwata said because different regions have different cultural tastes and age restrictions, but I'm sure the only people going out of their way to import a game would at least be old enough to understand age restrictions/different cultures.
I do think that playing on a ship provides a much more exhilarating experience, but sometimes you just have to go with time-honoured tradition and put a stick in some mud. Oh, and either way, I know that no the matter the resolution, I will still be playing great games. Might be time to snag me a cheap 3DS at last.
Whenever I bring up any faults I have with the 3DS people always mention how vast the library is, but sadly it hasn't been a huge hit for me. It probably also doesn't help that I've gotten so many games with PS Plus that I have at least 20 games for the Vita with Plus or crossbuy by getting the PS3 version. I don't refute that the 3DS has a huge library, but I've found more to do with my Vita.

Here In Japland the 3ds can use public transit cards and all types of cards. Nothing like getting off work and paying your train fee and downloading a game and starting it before the cold walk home after the train station. A few times I come home late because I get wrapped up in a game and sit down on a park bench.

OOZ662 Resident Evil Revelations looks significantly better than any PSP game I've ever seen, but as alluded to by Omnimon64, there aren't too many such examples. Monster Hunter Ultimate 3 looks better than any PSP iteration of the series, but not by a whole lot (at least not to my eyes.) I'd rate the original 3DS's graphics as being somewhere between the Gamecube and the Wii. Since the NEW 3DS (what a stupid name) can run Xenoblade, that puts it at least on par with the Wii. So ultimately: NEW 3DS/Wii > 3DS > Gamecube > PS2 > PSP To answer your original question: The 3DS had better graphics than the PSP to begin with, but not to the extent that you could easily tell Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP) and KH: Dream Drop Distance (3DS) apart at first glance.

There are very, very few of these, and they are only exclusive because they don't run at a playable speed on the original 3DS. The alternative is either a shoddier 3DS release, or no game at all. Most games could be played by either console, but there were quite a few that were Gameboy Color-exclusive. And it's funny, because I don't remember anyone having complained about it.

As already mentioned, the GBA SP was functionally no different from the regular GBA aside from frontlight inclusion, although there were some games that offered alternate colour options to take advantage of the added visibility (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is one of them).

On my current 3DS, I am *frequently* removing the SD Card to plug it into my computer, so I can dump all my video game screenshots and digital camera images on to a personal computer. With that MicroSD card where it is, that makes things *extremely* inconvenient. Hell, the card _itself_ makes things inconvenient (I'd need to buy an adapter for MicroSD since my computers don't have one), but the _position_ of the slot just complicates things further. What were they thinking?? Also, it's worth noting most (normal) 3DS systems come with _2 GB_ memory cards, so 4 GB is actually a step up, believe it or not. Still stingy, absolutely.
To be fair, you are one person. You can't claim that a feature is widely used because you yourself use it often. I sometimes use the SD card from my 3DS to put videos onto it so I can watch stuff on the move, but I wouldn't say most people do that, too. I prefer the SD card as my laptop supports the use of SD cards, but not micro SD cards. And whilst 4 GB is a step up from 2 GB, this size is still really small in today's world. Perhaps they were being stingy to avoid raising the price of the New 3DS, but I wouldn't recommend buying one anytime soon.
I miss the original 3DS. It looked more like the DS Lite and had a sturdy build. Personally, I think the 3DSXL looks really disgusting, with it's weird, rounded shape and gross matte finish. If I could find an original 3DS, I'd buy one, but I don't want an XL. Also, I wish the 2DS was foldable and not terrible, because I'd buy one of those because, honestly, 3D is a gimmick and I couldn't care less about it, nor do I want to pay more for it. EDIT: Super Nintendo colors? I thought the controllers with the purple buttons were infinitely more popular.

My tablet can: -emulate the DS, Gameboys, N64 and many more consoles... -play movies -play android games -browse the web -watch Netflix, BBC iplayer and many more on demand services -has way more memory storage than this -call people through skype etc -image/video edit -record video and audio -take images -code my own software -listen to music -download any files (including torrents) -use Tor etc -Emails other forms of messaging and i have probably missed many features... why would anyone still want a handheld console...Tablets are getting really affordable and are now getting really nice looking games. So in all honesty i don't think it will be long until handhelds are pointless. it will all come down to a single device capable of doing everything.

On the other hand, I dropped $200 for the unit and $20 more for a decent shell. $9 was annoying, but more of a quibble. Worth it for the Gamestop adapter with its detachable USB cable that lets me plug it into a decent charger, not that bit of plastic crap that Nintendo threw in. I have half a dozen good wallwarts and all of them are better that the weak, cheap charger Nintendo used to include in the box. It charges much faster on my iPad charger than it ever did on a stock unit.

The C stick from the new 3ds reminds me of those shitty pieces of rubber between g, h and b keys in laptop keyboards to replace the mouse in the late 90's, early 2000's, the pointing stick.

They never disappeared. ThinkPads still have them. Even the ThinkPad Yoga. I still prefer the nub over touchpads because you don't have the problem of reaching the edge and having to lift up back to the center. They offer more control with less movement. One thing that touchpads now have over the nub is multitouch gestures. When they actually work correctly, at least.

Nintendo is either stupid or genius for that, realizing people will get around that by either hacking or buying two systems. :P

First party eShop games in Japan seem to be $50-60 which is a little more expensive but that seems like it's barely justify importing. AU, though, from prices I've seen $50 was "budget" for DS games (above what US "premium" games cost).

Every kanji character has its own intrinsic meaning, as they are imports of chinese characters (each of which also have their own specific meanings). Japanese is kind of weird though because it actually does have writing that only corresponds to sounds such as hiragana and katakana (which are more commonly used in Japanese writing than kanji) as opposed to written Chinese which only has characters.

I think the name of the C stick was an artifact from when the C stick were actually C -buttons- on the Nintendo 64 arranged to resemble a D-pad. The C buttons were originally intended to control the camera in Nintendo 64 games (before developers started using them for other purposes). Thus, it's not hard to imagine it being named after this fact.

No, I don't believe they should only be played on the deck of a ship, as they can most certainly provide much amusement in the swimming pool, especially when your classmates nearly drown trying to retrieve them from the bottom of said pool!
We tended to reserve quoits for non-maritime purposes. Letting them fly into the sea due to an awfully misjudged throw was unthinkable. The black plastic brick was the preferred object for retrieval at the bottom of the pool. Ultimately, I think a quality quoit is too good for a ship.
Speaking of which, how do you pronounce quoit? We always said it with a silent "u" (as if the "Qu" was the Q at the start of "Qatar").

After the fact my friend bought a new Nintendo 3DS XL... just the system. Although I knew it wouldn't come with the charger. Those who has the Ambassador Edition one, you guys are lucky. This is why I'm getting a 2DS first then the new 3DSXL because my 3DS XL broke and I don't know what will happen to the newer version. I couldn't transfer the data back to the 2ds from the new 3dsxl which sucks. That's why it's a good idea to get the 2ds first then upgrade after that. Plus, the 2ds is cheaper anyway and has a charger so I will have a new charger instead of a old one that I have for more than 4 years. The DSi that I have is already old and the battery is too old for me to play the system, the light is always red and the system dies out when you turn it on.
I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't hit this with a copyright strike yet

Look, I understand why people want to play quoits on ships, because I do too! It really is the best place to play it! Nothing is like the feeling! But not many people have access to ship decks and people who really love to play quoits such as me would not be able to play it very often.
Yes some people say it should only be on ships because it wouldn't be the same and would ruin the charm of the game if it was played elsewhere but you see that wouldn't happen! Playing quoits on ship decks would still remain the perfect place and imagine the feeling of after playing it for weeks in your garden, you go on a ship and experience it on a ship. The feeling is absolutely mindblowing and I've experienced it myself. I really hope people understand that quoits should be allowed to b played everywhere. Otherwise it is quoits discrimination. People don't HAVE to play football on a football pitch, they can kick around a ball in the garden, so why can't I toss a few rings in my garden?

Considering the fact that pokemon are a continued theme in smash bros, and Jigglypuff is in many of them, it's possible that he just didn't realize it was Kirby. Also consider the thought that they are both pretty much pink blobs as far as character model goes(and yes I can see there is no color on the plate picture). I have a great understanding of sarcasm, and I didn't catch it if it was implied. Najja Mallace Are you aware buttons are not just placed into the plastic cast? There has to be internal space for that to work. There is none. Maybe in the XL, but definitely not in the small one. Card Slot and Stylus were moved so that the cover plates were more visible and the console looks nice from the sides. In the 2 weeks I've had the ambassadors I have not found problems with these 2 new locations, in fact it prevents idiot colleages from pressing the cartridge.
Anyways, I find the c-stick much more confortable than the CPP I had on the XL.

The card slot doesn't change the shape or size of the back plate, theres no real reason to move it. The idea of moving the stylus simply for aesthetics is beyond stupid. The most plausible reason for making all these changes is so they can try to distinguish the system from all of the previous models. To get someone to buy a new product you need to make them feel that its been changed sufficiently.

I organize small tourneys in college and needed 2 3DS with capture cards to have big screen matches with Smash bros, so I bought the cards and installed them myself. There is literally no space to move the components around, and shrinking a custom motherboard like that to make room for it is very, very expensive. Shit, on my college projects with small budget companies some boards that are literally shit cost about 10k-100k to shrink a full 2% points in mass production.
In fact, part of the reason they have a micro SD slot this time around instead of a full size SD is because it still lacks the necessary space.
Now i'm pretty sure you'll tell me "then why not use micro SD in the first 3DS"?
And I'll answer: licensing costs. At the time the original 3DS released they still had 2-3 years of SD licensing they got to use with the DSi and Wii, so why would they ever go through the trouble to ask for another license to have a half assed product with a secondary stick literally 3 games use?

800 (400 per eye in 3D)x240 on an almost 5 inch screen is ridiculous when I have a Vita with a 5 inch 960x544 screen and a smartphone at 1080p with a 5 inch screen.

There are definite benefits to using a lower res screen, and the screen quality is still a vast improvement over things in the past, so although it would be nice if they would release a HD model I can't see them doing so until it becomes efficient enough [GPUpower/battery/cost].
Also, their handhelds were always region free right up to the DS. What happened with the 3DS?
Borealis Johnson My girlfriend has an old 3DS XL and I can definitely tell the difference between my original and hers. Plus, I'm even fine with my Vita's at qHD, so it doesn't even have to HD, just a bit better, even doubling it would help. I get great battery life on my Vita (I know it only has one screen and no 3d) so I'm sure Nintendo could have squeezed in some better internals and kept the cost fairly cheap while maintaining battery life. My Vita was $200 new and has better internals (again, not factoring in a second screen and 3d) so I'm sure Nintendo could have found a way.
Not sure WHY, but the 3DS is region locked. Very disappointing. Iwata said because different regions have different cultural tastes and age restrictions, but I'm sure the only people going out of their way to import a game would at least be old enough to understand age restrictions/different cultures.
I do think that playing on a ship provides a much more exhilarating experience, but sometimes you just have to go with time-honoured tradition and put a stick in some mud.
Oh, and either way, I know that no the matter the resolution, I will still be playing great games. Might be time to snag me a cheap 3DS at last.
Whenever I bring up any faults I have with the 3DS people always mention how vast the library is, but sadly it hasn't been a huge hit for me.
It probably also doesn't help that I've gotten so many games with PS Plus that I have at least 20 games for the Vita with Plus or crossbuy by getting the PS3 version.
I don't refute that the 3DS has a huge library, but I've found more to do with my Vita.

Here In Japland the 3ds can use public transit cards and all types of cards. Nothing like getting off work and paying your train fee and downloading a game and starting it before the cold walk home after the train station. A few times I come home late because I get wrapped up in a game and sit down on a park bench.

Resident Evil Revelations looks significantly better than any PSP game I've ever seen, but as alluded to by Omnimon64, there aren't too many such examples. Monster Hunter Ultimate 3 looks better than any PSP iteration of the series, but not by a whole lot (at least not to my eyes.) I'd rate the original 3DS's graphics as being somewhere between the Gamecube and the Wii. Since the NEW 3DS (what a stupid name) can run Xenoblade, that puts it at least on par with the Wii.
So ultimately: NEW 3DS/Wii > 3DS > Gamecube > PS2 > PSP
To answer your original question: The 3DS had better graphics than the PSP to begin with, but not to the extent that you could easily tell Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP) and KH: Dream Drop Distance (3DS) apart at first glance.

Because the actual hardware specs weren't any different from the normal model. The more apt comparison is to the original Gameboy and the Gameboy Color. Most games could be played by either console, but there were quite a few that were Gameboy Color-exclusive. And it's funny, because I don't remember anyone having complained about it.

As already mentioned, the GBA SP was functionally no different from the regular GBA aside from frontlight inclusion, although there were some games that offered alternate colour options to take advantage of the added visibility (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is one of them).

On my current 3DS, I am *frequently* removing the SD Card to plug it into my computer, so I can dump all my video game screenshots and digital camera images on to a personal computer. With that MicroSD card where it is, that makes things *extremely* inconvenient. Hell, the card _itself_ makes things inconvenient (I'd need to buy an adapter for MicroSD since my computers don't have one), but the _position_ of the slot just complicates things further. What were they thinking??
Also, it's worth noting most (normal) 3DS systems come with _2 GB_ memory cards, so 4 GB is actually a step up, believe it or not. Still stingy, absolutely.

To be fair, you are one person. You can't claim that a feature is widely used because you yourself use it often. I sometimes use the SD card from my 3DS to put videos onto it so I can watch stuff on the move, but I wouldn't say most people do that, too.
I prefer the SD card as my laptop supports the use of SD cards, but not micro SD cards. And whilst 4 GB is a step up from 2 GB, this size is still really small in today's world.
Perhaps they were being stingy to avoid raising the price of the New 3DS, but I wouldn't recommend buying one anytime soon.
You never need to change it because New 3DS can transfer files wirelessly to your PC...

I miss the original 3DS. It looked more like the DS Lite and had a sturdy build. Personally, I think the 3DSXL looks really disgusting, with it's weird, rounded shape and gross matte finish. If I could find an original 3DS, I'd buy one, but I don't want an XL.
Also, I wish the 2DS was foldable and not terrible, because I'd buy one of those because, honestly, 3D is a gimmick and I couldn't care less about it, nor do I want to pay more for it.
EDIT: Super Nintendo colors? I thought the controllers with the purple buttons were infinitely more popular.

***** i have the metallic blue original 3ds and i have to agree with you after holding my little brothers 3ds xl i would prefer mine by far. it just feels more solid and high quality the xl actually feels lighter and cheaper and the folding mechanism is really loose on them if you lay down and hold it above you the screen closes.

why would anyone still want a handheld console...Tablets are getting really affordable and are now getting really nice looking games. So in all honesty i don't think it will be long until handhelds are pointless. it will all come down to a single device capable of doing everything.

Raven Knight Vincent Fair enough, and on a basic level I'm with you. It was pretty weak of them. Though not as weak as screwing the American market out of the smaller 3DS.
On the other hand, I dropped $200 for the unit and $20 more for a decent shell. $9 was annoying, but more of a quibble. Worth it for the Gamestop adapter with its detachable USB cable that lets me plug it into a decent charger, not that bit of plastic crap that Nintendo threw in. I have half a dozen good wallwarts and all of them are better that the weak, cheap charger Nintendo used to include in the box. It charges much faster on my iPad charger than it ever did on a stock unit.
