That's the most depressing thing I've ever seen. Having the memory of your deceased rabbit in a time lapse of grainy horrible pictures captured and stored in a Gameboy.

I always remember getting excited when Nintendo announced the game boy camera was going to be compatible with perfect dark on the n64, so you could make characters out of yourself and friends. Awesome for multiplayer. But then they got cold feet and took out the feature out of fears of kids practicing shooting their school friends etc. apparently the mode is still in the code! But it put me off buying one back then. :(
we "yanks" as you like to say larry (lol) where under a lot of pressure with our video games at time due to the school shootings..in particular the columbine massacre which was not helped when it became well know that harris and kleboild where huge gamers and avid doom players and had modded quake maps to resemble their school so thats kinda what gave nintendo cold feet

On the topic of disturbing images did anyone else have the misfortune of opening the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark? No joke I was scared to go upstairs alone for months after seeing some of those images. On one particularly bad night I got like 3 hours of sleep because I was too busy sweating my ass off in fear under like 4 bed sheets because I was so damn scared. Don't get me wrong the stories themselves weren't bad, save for one or two, but the illustrations were among the scariest images I've seen to this day.
+Amelia Hartman Exactly what I wanted to say. I loved that feature; even though you were very limited due to the small number of photos, you could make some amusing little games if you were creative. I remember making a Myst-style house walk-through, among other puzzle/story things.
Many people's introduction to digital photography. You can definitely see the somewhat quirky influence of its Japanese youth origins. The 'selfie' mode is pretty pioneering stuff. If only we knew in 1998 what we know now.
Oh, and dear all of us ashens fans; I've recently discovered that if you're in the DJ menu and in the mode where you can scratch on the record and what not, by pressing select it brings up a keyboard that allows you to configure the background beat and music. It's actually quite advanced for just being a little toy thing.
fun fact!! first watched this video when i was 13 in February 2015 and the faces that pop up in the gameboy camera software gave me horrible nightmares for about a month :D
My boss gave me a Gameboy printer and camera with Pokémon Gold for Christmas last year. I didn't know how they work and that's how I found your channel and you are definitely an excellent RUclipsr
I remember getting one these brand new at the store for surprisingly only $10 back in the day and I've never regretted it. The Running game was extremely addictive from what I remember and the ball game actually became kinda fun when it got to levels that made the juggling extremely fast. My favorite thing though was making stop motion looping animations with LEGO figures and clay and then making my own DJ mix for it to play to. So much simple fun from what was essentially a cheap webcam.
I liked seeing the GB Printer in action here. I always wondered how it went. I still have my old blue GB Camera somewhere though I don't know if the save battery has died yet. I never had the printer but I remember figuring out a way to transfer pictures from it to PC, from which I could print them on a regular printer if I wanted. I took a "snapshot" of the camera's save file using a GameShark (Action Reply in EU), then loaded it in a GameBoy tile data viewer -- all my photos were there, including some deleted ones if I'm remembering right. You can also transfer them to a computer using a DOS-only program that emulates a GB Printer using a link cable wired to the parallel port, and saves everything "printed" to it as a .BMP file. Also, if you rig something to hold the camera steady and have red, green and blue filters, you CAN take color photos. Take identical photos with each filter, transfer to a computer, and combine them into a single color picture in Photoshop/GIMP/Paint.NET/whatever.
Alright those faces were fucking terrifying...I mean holy shit especially in the context of a shitty little Gameboy peripheral menu. This is like a Creepypasta come true.
The Hot-Spot feature seems a bit less crap when you realize that clever use of the jump feature can be used to create a mini 32-state adventure-type/"Myst" game.
i remember me and my dad looking for a shop that sold the camera and printer, one shop offered to sell us just the paper for the printer but none of the other things. my dad and i were pretty incredulous why anyone would think we would want the paper if we didn't have the printer.
Dug mine out a while ago with the intention of selling. Found my camera had pics of my cat that died a few years ago on it so didn't want to let it go then. Also, I had left batteries in the printer which were now leaking all over it leaving a crystal like mess. Still had some printer paper left in it's box though all sealed up. It's kinda weird how I got such a nostalgic feeling for the camera though. It's quite a fun little thing. I kinda felt like the 3DS was paying a little bit of a homage to it with some of it's camera games and functions.
TheKieranator Maybe just for shits and giggles yeah, but like.... who would the target audience be? They'd have to give it away for free. I definitely wouldn't pay for this.
the frame rate gets faster (up to around 15-20 FPS) in bright conditions but it also uses more power in bright conditions in fact if the battery is low enough you can see the power LED flickering as the image is updated

Glad you are still on your Gameboy odyssey. Recently got a Super Gameboy for the SNES and it makes a surprising difference when playing games on the big screen and with a proper controller.
Great for retro lo-fi photography, and you can get a cable that transfers to an old PC via parallel. The DJ program is great for simple chip tune music. You can still easily get old stock paper rolls from eBay.
thank goodness for you tube it means we can watch something other than mainstream tv,I really think ashens will and should be mainstream, thanks ashen for all your good work.
I remember wanting the Game Boy just for the the camera and printer! I wanted to take pictures and play with the toy thingies. I also remember reading in the instructions that you could plug the camera into a Super Game Boy to record your "animations" on VCR and even make them longer by having them on tape. Though, I imagine that'd create jumps in the video from each time you stopped and restarted the recording... Also wish I had the printer, but that never happened. You could print panoramas you took in the trick shot mode. I'm pretty surprised there where never any followups to the Game Boy Camera, no Color Camera, no GBA Camera. You could say the DSi and 3DS cameras are followups, and they are pretty nice, especially the 3DS letting you take 3D photos and video, but what about all the toys you had on the ol GB Camera? Would've been nice to have seen it evolve with more features, more pictures, more colors, more resolution, etc, but the GB Camera was one of a kind, the first and the last.
Why the fuck have I heard of Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, and Game Boy Micro but never Game Boy Light?
It's really quite amazing that they put this many Easter eggs in a game like this, I wish people still did that kind of stuff. It might be "just a print game" but it looks like somebody put a lot of thought into it.
I still miss my old copy of it... I don't know where it is thanks to moving like 10 times. But I do remember figuring out that the pictures I printed was also stickers and shat my pants!

Somehow this is your fault so you should be ashamed!
I has this game when I was a kid in the 2000s. The faces never scared me but now that people point them out, they are scary. This gives me so much nostalgia... I think I'll look for my game.
Me: during the first bit of the video: "Please don't choose 'run', please don't choose 'run' ple- *cringe* ooo he chose 'run'" Also, I just realized that I had let Simon Pegg's face replace Stuart's face in my mind. They looks somewhat similar, but I was a tad surprised, because I hadn't seen Stuart's face in a long time. I felt like an idiot.
I never owned one as a kid, but I did manage to find one a few years back in a local GoodWill store with the printer in it's box that came in a nice little bundle for $5, and even had a roll regular thermal paper, but the printer did not seem to get warm enough to transfer anything as it moved across the paper sadly.
That's the most depressing thing I've ever seen. Having the memory of your deceased rabbit in a time lapse of grainy horrible pictures captured and stored in a Gameboy.

I heard the next Avatar is being shot on the GameBoy Camera.
Yeah i always knew Shyamalan would sink that low.

That's the whole joke. James Cameron's is known as Avatar and Shyamalan's movie is the last air bender. However they're both better known as just Avatar.
Might have been better if it was.
But seriously you DO NOT change the name of the main character when you make a movie adaptation.

Shyamalan only changed the name to be more respectful to the Chinese. Then he had a white kid in his role

WHY THE FUCK DOES A KIDS CAMERA HAVE FUCKING SCARY FACES THAT COME UP WHEN YOU WOULD ACT CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT THE FUCKING RUN DOES
Uncanny valley, the stilted dated amateur animations and the nature of the Game Boy makes the Camera quite a creepy/eerie experience.
On the topic of disturbing images did anyone else have the misfortune of opening the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark? Not yellow is my favourite colour.
souperman72 and now Google have brought out a phone in Not Pink lol
I never owned one as a kid, but I did manage to find one a few years back in a local GoodWill store with the printer in it's box that came in a nice little bundle for $5, and even had a roll regular thermal paper, but the printer did not seem to get warm enough to transfer anything as it moved across the paper sadly.
The stuff on the camera reminds me of WarioWare Inc..
You gotta love when Kawaii Ashen emerged from the printer.
