The Two Best Short Hikes In Blue Ridge Mountains? Beacon Heights and Linville Falls

  • OK... so maybe not the best hikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway but definitely the best short (less than a mile) hikes with the most beautiful payoffs in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are talking about the Beacon Heights trail and the Linville Falls Overlook Trail. Both are less than a mile to hike in and out and Beacon Heights features two different mountain range vistas that are just stunning and breathtaking, especially this time of year when the fall leaves are starting to change their colors. Then on the Linville Falls Overlook Trail you get to see, feel, hear and taste the multiple waterfalls from many different angles and views. Hard to beat either of these beautiful NC hikes.
    Speaking of hard to beat, it’s hard to beat the National Park system campground at Linville Falls where we spent the night in our Travato 59K. We took in the scenery there, built a campfire and even made homemade Peanut Butter and Jelly French Toast on the Blackstone Griddle.

    In our Q&A section we answer your questions:
    Should we get a 17” or 22” Blackstone Griddle?
    Adding external storage to your van with an aluminum box from Tractor Supply
    Adding a great backup camera and dashcam to your van

    Many of you have commented that we should not have been upset with the neighbors who were running their generator. We didn’t do a good job of conveying that in the video so we wanted to give a little more information. While we were outside in the morning they had their generator running and then started their diesel engine. We realize they needed to start their engine to leave... what we didn’t say is they started their generator and engine too and then left for a walk around the park. They returned about 30 minutes later. We won’t run our generator at all if there’s anyone around. We realize not everyone is like that but if we don’t want to have to listen to our own generator then having to breathe diesel smoke and hear both their generator and engine was not pleasant, made even more unpleasant by the fact that they left if running and left their site. That and the fact that the night before they ran their generator until after 11pm even though quiet hours are from 8pm until 8am. Maybe we should have removed that part of the video... but we have a lot of new RVers watching us and we want to do our part to make sure folks know their actions effect other people and the quiet hours are there for a reason. We are glad they are able to get outdoors too but being in a NP means being respectful of nature and your fellow campers. They were neither. We present our videos as real to life as we can... and sometimes it’s not all fun and games and sugarcanes. If that offends you we apologize but still vow to remain true to who we are... one sweet wife and one grumpy old man camping with a dog trying to enjoy nature. Just wanted to address that before too many of you remind us that we should not have included this.

      Calling out the rude and inconsiderate........................................nothing wrong with that at all... they should have been reported to the rangers / camp host for violating quiet hours................thanks for the box details ;-)

      I understand you need to warm up a diesel, but driving out of the campground at a slow pace will do the same. 30 minutes is excessive, and if you have a diesel pickup I’m glad for you but please.
      Campsites are getting more crowded every year, we all need to use our manners and be respectful of our fellow campers.
      Owen real life is why I’m a subscriber don’t change.

    My husband, Rick and I enjoy your videos....we have watched most of them! We recently saw Lynne starting a fire at Linville (one of our favorite places to visit) Here's a helpful hint in starting a fire. Using a paper egg carton, melt some old candles in each egg holder in the carton. Fill to almost brim of each of the 12 sections. Let cool, and pack it with you when traveling. Cut off one section, and light! Place sticks over it. Guaranteed to start a beautiful fire! Enjoy your travels!

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle

      Thank you for the suggestion. I didn’t have any paper egg carton so I also read you could fill a empty toilet paper roll with dryer lint and pour candle wax in it. We use that the last time and it worked great. I’ll will also try the egg carton trick. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi Owen and Lynn. We were recently at a campground near Mt. Mitchell and were trying desperately to start a fire. One of the nice neighbors at an adjacent campsite came over and gave us their homemade "fire starters". They were awesome. She explained to me that she took an egg carton (paper one not plastic) and cut it up into 12 cups. Then she put dryer lint in each one and wax on top. I melted an old candle and then poured it on top of each one. We now keep them in our Travato so we have them whenever we want a campfire. Give it a try!

Y’all must have pulled in that week because some friends of ours were in that 5th wheel across from you and was still there and they were staying through Friday the 25th. Coming out of a 37' diesel pusher, I would always start the engine at the very last minutes of a campground visit because I know it's annoying. However, coaches with air suspension need a few minutes to air up the bags and get going. I know that some don't realize this fact. I didn't until I bought a diesel coach. That one is now sold off to a new owner in preparations for my new gas B van on the FORD Transit chassis. No generator. It has six AGM batteries and is an all 12volt coach with the exception of the microwave. Should be ready by December...Yippie!!

We are normally pretty positive people and it takes a lot for us to complain about things but the generator noisy was excessive. But still we should not have cheered when they left. Yes, RV prices have skyrocketed during Covid but there should be a lot of good used ones for sales next year if you can wait. We really do appreciate your support every week. Have a wonderful week.

      VAN TREKKING lifestyle I thought cheering when they left was comical! Warped sense of humor maybe. We have neighbors behind us that like to entertain until 1 am or later some nights. I finally spoke with the husband/dad and it has improved. Based on that, I understand your pain. I agree, you all are positive people and laugh and joke and go on. You have shown the world who you are and that is great people.

    Loved the video, as usual. It reminded me of our stop at the Mile High Bridge on Grandfather Mountain over 10 years ago. We would love to go that way again someday. I remember how it was cold and snowy on top of the mountain and we watched the car thermometer rise about 30 degrees as we came back down. I also remember stoping at an Irish, or Scottish (?) store at the base of the mountain. Yeah... don't get me started, talking about your home region. That is my favorite part of the country that we have seen so far. ♥️👍

    Hello Owen! This question has probably already been asked. If so, I apologize.
    My husband and I just purchased our first van (sequence) and we are very eager to get out there!!
    Our question is this:
    How low is your clearance under your van where the generator is?
    Have you ever bottomed out??

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  4 года назад

      We never bottomed out in our Travato but we were also very cautious and didn’t go places that could cause problems. However, we have now purchased a Revel so we have plenty of clearance. Congratulations on your new purchase. Have fun!

    Sorry if I’ve already asked - I might have. Would you install this same backup camera in your new Revel, or do you have other ideas for how you want to do that? We’re the ones that totaled their ‘20 Revel, and we’re buying our mods now for our incoming ‘21. Thanks again for the content. A lot of fun!

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  4 года назад

      The 21 Revel has a backup camera so there is no need to purchase that. However some people have suggested that we get a back dash camera since we got rear ended. I don’t think we will do that at this since most of the time the person at fault is the person that hits you from behind, that is the information we received from the police officer.

    Thank you, I am now convinced my husband needs the 17” griddle to add to our van travels. I’m hoping you can answer a question for me. I see the 17” come both with and without a lid. I think I would like the option of having a lid but I can not find much info on if it is easily removable. We would like to have the option of not taking up extra storage space by leaving the lid off for van use. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  4 года назад

      You are right, it does come with or without the lid. We have the lid but you never see it because we took it off to save space. Now that we have the 22” it was probably not cost effective to spend the extra for the lid but we have it here in case we need to put it back on. As far as taking it off and on it mounts with 4 screws and nuts. I’d say it takes about 10-15 minutes to line everything up and put it on... about 5 minutes to take it off. If you are going to use it to cook at home and on the road I’d get the lid. Put it away during the season you’re traveling a lot and then install it when you know you’re home for a while. Hope that helps.

    Hi Lynn and Owen! I really enjoyed this week’s edition. It was a nice, peaceful trip with the added bonus of gorgeous scenery. My husband and I along with a good friend from college days stayed in a cabin in Linville Falls in the early 1990s. We’ve said for years we need to go back and now you’ve given us the incentive we need to just go! We love the western part of NC and especially in the fall. Thanks for your helpful tips and wonderful sense of humor. You always make me smile and laugh. Keep doing your happy dance for that is what makes our lives fun and worth living!
    If it is not too personal, what did you do for a living before y’all retired? Maybe you’ve answered that in a previous video and I missed it, although I’ve watched quite a few of your videos. No need for specifics, just the general field y’all were in. 👋👋. Bye-bye until the next time from NW FL. We came through Hurricane Sally with some relatively minor damage but out at Ft. Pickens it is a different story and for people impacted by the surge, many have lost everything. Recovery will take quite a while. Camping out there may be slow in coming back. We have not seen an assessment of the damage. 😔.
    P.S. I have no issue with what you said about generator man. He/they were just not thinking or were rude and didn’t care. Camping is supposed to be fun and relaxing, not annoying and stressful. 👍🏻

(If you go into the Gorge, two things: 1. snakes, 2. if you go in, you have to hike back out/up😳) We didn't know there was a camping area at Linville...good to know! We realize they needed to start their engine to leave... what we didn’t say is they started their engine too and then left for a hike... returned about 30 minutes later. The night before they ran their generator until after 11pm even though quiet hours are from 8pm until 8am. Maybe we should have removed that... but we have a lot of new RVers watching us and we want to do our part to make sure folks know their actions effect other people and the quiet hours are there for a reason. We are glad they are able to get outdoors too but being in a NP means being respectful of nature and your fellow campers. They were neither.
