It was a Sunday morning, December 25th, and under the tree, there was a good chance that Santa brought you a Nintendo Entertainment System, Barbie, Ghostbuster Proton Packs, Micro Machines, or Dolly Surprise! It was the last year of the Reagan administration. The Winter Olympics took place in Calgary and the Summer Olympics were held in Seoul South Korea. NASA resumed space flights after the Challenger disaster, Rhianna was born at the beginning of the year and Michael Cera was born that Summer. This was the year in Christmas,1988.
The Year in Christmas catalogs movies and television that aired that year. This is the second episode of the series and will continue to count down through the 80s.

What do you remember about that year? Did you have a movie or TV show that you watched? I cataloged all the Christmas media from 1988 sprinkled in with TV specials, events, and a few retro commercials that we all loved.
I was 7. I had strep throat bad on Christmas Day. Had to go to the emergency room for antibiotics. Felt horrible. Didn't feel well enough to open my gifts. I got my own NES that year and the Alphie robot.
That sucks to be sick on Christmas. @@DrEvil818
I was barley a month old that time of 1988 LOL
Christmas the evil pagan holiday
Wow 1988, I just turned 21 that October. It was a great year. We had seen so many rock concerts from 83-88. Styx was the first. Then Ozzy Osborne and Mötley Crüe, then Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister, Cinderella and Bon Jovi were close to 88 I think. I had gotten a decent job, and overall it was a fun time. For me the best Christmas 🎄 experiences were the mid to late 70's and early 80's.
The late 80s and early 90s was my era and 1988 was the year I discovered hard rock / heavy metal.
Sounds like a few good years. Sure wish things were like that now!
Ah yes 1988, I was there. Only 9 years old. Loved micro machines and getting nes games for Christmas. And Scrooged is a classic.
I think that was the year I got my NES as well. My favorite has always been the Christmas sitcoms but if I had to pick a favorite movie I would have to go with Ernest Saves Christmas
@@ChristmasAficionado Ernest Saves Christmas is a classic as well. Not seen that in years. I should watch that this year.
@@AlidarJarok1 I watch it every year on Christmas Eve
I remember that Wonder Years episode--Kevin drags Paul to the store to search for a perfume for Winnie... that she already owns, i think? We had a lot of those episodes taped on Betamax back in the day. :) Good times.
Yep. Paul was the voice of reason. The 80s was the best time for TV
Make sure you check out the other video for 1989 and 1987 is coming in the new year!
Excellent! I'll be there! :)@@ChristmasAficionado
In 1988, I was 16 years old😊 the Best years of my life !!🤩 I had great teenage years in the 80’s -90's 🤗 If I could time travel, I sure would go back then!!!😂❤
What was your favorite movie or tv show that year?
@@ChristmasAficionado I remember loving THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR, THE GOLDEN GIRLS and THE COSBY SHOW. I loved sitcoms!😄Still do! I loved soaps too back then ( not anymore... too much drama..) 😀 I use to taped THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, watch it after school😁!!
Scrooged alone could win 1988 the Christmas crown!
it is one of my favorite versions of A Christmas Carol
I have on vhs and dvd.
Streamed it 3 times this Christmas. Doesn’t get the acknowledgment it should for great Christmas movies.
And no one learned anything from that movie. The boomers let the corporations take over
I agree it’s always been a favorite of mine. Happy New Year
Born in 92 but a lot of these would be re runs that id eventually watch as a kid. Nostalgia hurts so good
Yep. I was 13 and all the 60s and 70s shows were what I watched
I was born in the early 80s. Most of this stuff was on tv in the 90s.
Oh man, the commercials hit HARD! 😢
It's always hard to choose which commercials to use
I think I am going to LOVE this channel! Not only is this channel Christmas all year long BUT 80's Christmas! I wanna go back soooooo bad!
wow. This is one of the best comments I have received. Thanks for watching and yes I will have Christmas content all year long!
@ChristmasAficionado that's awesome and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
I want one go back too. I miss these times. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Christmas 1988, was in my 2nd year of my 2nd tour in Korea on the DMZ!
Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your service 🇺🇲
I was 8 years old. Thank you for your service.
The Coca-Cola commercial. Wow, that took me back!
agreed. That is why I used the entire commercial
For a number of reasons, I had a hard time getting into Christmas, this year. All the usual stuff I watch to feel nostalgic just wasn’t hitting. But this video helped out a lot! Even though it’s December 27 and I’m ready to go back to “normal,” I could still use a dose of holiday cheer. Subscribing because I hope you do more like this!
I'm glad I can help. I also have 1989 available. I'm slowly counting down the 80s and hope to have 1987 in January
@@ChristmasAficionado,thanks! Can't wait 😊especially because I get depressed at Christmas, but I like to watch Christmas stuff,AFTERWARDS! Just found your channel & subbed 😊
I was 16. I'm 51 now. This video brings me back so much when both my parents were alive and Im their only child. Christmas back then was so magical. This actually brings tears to my eyes just wishing things could go back like that. With both parents and Christmas break from school was the best. Especially the last day in school before they let us out for Xmas. Candy canes, games, and all around fun. I'd give anything to go back. Thank you for this video. I really needed to see this. It makes me feel 16 all over again. Thank you with all my heart. I loved this,! Oh my it's fruitcake weather.
I'm glad it brought back some memories. I've been having fun putting these together. 1986 is coming soon!
People often generalize eras by the decade like they were just one cultural block when in reality cultural shifts can occur within a matter of couple of years. The early 80s, mid 80s and late 80s had their own vibes. In some ways the late 80s to early 90s were a more polished version of the 80s, sort of like the 80s 2.0 ha.
Then the emergence of grunge and gangsta rap into the mainstream ruined the positive vibes (IMHO) and younger people became more disillusioned and jaded. When I look back at that time, it almost feels like an alternate timeline rather than a continuation of the dysfunctional society that we live in today.
I essentially grew up watching TV from 1985 - 1995. The late 80 and 90s is what I loved.
I have to say that I agree with all you said. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Christmas 88 I remember being told there was no Santa since my dad worked for grandfather at the mine and gold prices had crashed year before,I was 7 my brother Dylan was just a baby and brother jeff was 4.Also it was my mom's birthday so I still had to put on a smile or get an old fashioned 80s beating 😂 Thankfully 89 was better and a secret Santa hooked me up with a Gameboy.Great video really hit me in the❤Sidenote I watched all these specials on a Montgomery Ward Tv
well make sure you watch the Year in Christmas '89 on this channel as well and 1987 is in production!
@@ChristmasAficionado I saw it on my feed and I will! Greta videos I like the recommendations you put up too, Scrooged is definitely the best telling of the Dickens classic
Everybody knows that Christmas movies come out in *checks notes* July
I watch them all year long so that makes sense!
Great work on this. I love the vintage commercials. Even though it’s local, I’m glad the Eat N Park commercial was included. That’s a classic.
I had to add it even if you’ve the only one who knows it
I grew up in Pittsburgh/Monroeville. It wasn’t officially Christmas until this commercial came on.
This is awesome! Would love to see more of these!
The Year 1989 is on the channel. 1987 is coming in January!
Wow, 1988, the year I was born. I'm glad that so many videos exist about the 70s and 80s, so I can live vicariously through them because I can't go back in time to see these events myself in person.
I'm glad the video let you relive that time. It was a great time!
This was the first Christmas my family spent in Florida after moving there in the summer. I was 17 and working at the McDonalds on the Navy base my father was stationed.
Thanks for sharing. I moved a lot as a kid and I remember those Christmas's when we would celebrate in a new place.
Ernest Saves Christmas. The intro song and images to the movie are super memorable.
Wonder Years was funny while watching living at my grandmother's. She still works at the age of eighty three.
You’re right but I always thought it was too serious for an Ernest film
11:40 love it!!!!
Pee Wee was the best!
Wish it was 1988. My dad would still be here. I didn’t go home this Christmas, but I would if I had known there were only 3 left with him.
sorry to hear that
I was 5 years old and trust me dont look back look forward and live for the now because every era has its ups and down 😔
Well reliving what you enjoyed is never a bad thing as long as you return to the present
16:25 -- The very first year of Christmas Crunch! Oh I (eight years old at the time) looked forward to it and its ornaments ever year!
I don't eat cereal anymore but I clearly remember begging my mom to buy this ever year
@@ChristmasAficionado Of course! After all didn't one popular 80s singer say we are living in a cereal world? :D

This video is amazing! Thank you for the nostalgia. Well done!
Thanks. Make sure you check out the 1989 video as well! I'm counting down the 80s and 1987 comes out in January
Love these yearly Christmas tv videos!!! PLEASE MAKE MORE! 🎄
1987 is about to come out!
I Stan that lady playing Emma Frost in the Macy’s Parade
thanks for watching
I loved seeing these. I was 12 in 88, thank you for posting. Happy New Year.
Thanks so Much! Happy New Year!
God what happened to us. So much optimism, everyone got along and back then it seemed normal. Today we're so devided and are in some dark times.
I was young but looking back I still think there was division just not as reported as much before cable TV. However I miss sitcoms so much.
Holy Charles Dickens this video is so 80s.
It is. Thanks for watching. Do you love the 80s?
Good stuff from 1988!
I think!
I actually haven’t seen any of it.
Check out some of the TV shows. My favorites
I always say to my kids "know what i mean verne"
They just look at me sideways.
I have done that as well. I also like to say "Surprised?" the way Ernest does. Ernest Saves Christmas is one of my favorites of all time!
I was born in 1988 so I can’t say I remember anything of that year LOL
Well I hope you check out the movies and tv shows. They are a lot of fun
17:39 eat and park commeicial is nice to listen to and watch.
It's a local commercial but so iconic that it is still used to this day
I was 7 years old that Christmas
Do you remember any of the shows?
@@ChristmasAficionado Some
Just the commercials
To Be Honest 1988 Was Such A Great Year For Horror Films Cartoons TV Shows Commercials Toys Christmas Movies Music Videos Songs Actions Films History Makers Clothes Hair And Last But Not Least Teen Heartthrobs Just To Name A Few Mario Lopez And Ll Cool J Both Of Them Are Very Goodlooking Very Attractive Men ❤🎉😊
I started this series with the year 1989 because that is the year I remember being amazing. However, as I started working on 1988 it had so many fun things. I only focus on the Christmas things, but you are right it had a lot of great things that happened that year!
most tv sitcoms were complete trash but most other things were still good.
Oh hey, is Christmas Aficianado from Pittsburgher? I was surprised (and happy!) to see that Eat n' Park Christmas tree commercial in here!
Yep, I live in Pittsburgh and the Eat N' Park commercial is iconic!
Just for that you get a like and a sub! Greetings from another Pittsburgher that very clearly remembers 1988!
Awesome!
Class of ‘88 here
Did all of these movies and TV shows seem familiar?
@@ChristmasAficionado yes I didn’t like or watch all of them but I knew them all
The 80s is the decade that destroyed humanity and the American psyche. Were now living in a society with smooth brain seniors that caused all this mess and all of us peasants to hate each other/stay divided while we quickly move to a two class economic system. We work way too much and way harder than they ever did for far less
But that Golden Girls episode was sweet!
I was born this year
Have you seen any of these before?
1:54 Avenger prediction
Cliff Richard foretold all! LOL
1st 2 Die Hard movies are Christmas movies!
I don't disagree!
deadly dreams movie seems ok
The clip I chose seemed scary but the rest of the movie is just ok
1988 our boy canseco went 40/40
There is a fact I could have used in the beginning!
3:24 is that Sorrell Booke aka Boss Hogg being petted by Michelle?
It is. He turns out to be Santa Claus!
@@ChristmasAficionado I don’t remember this. I’m off to find that episode!
Yep! That's our little fat buddy 😁
227 ❤
Love that show
❤hamburger helper❤🎉😮❤
I haven't had that in decades. Oh good call.
here at 600 likes i could say many things but i will just say 80 90s was great just think it still be like that if the internet didn't come online but then we all couldn't be in here lol idk win some lose some what i can say for 80s till now was just as bad then as it is now just less tech back then but all the aids crack unabomber y2k all the wars till now and assignation attempts i use to work at the hotel Ronald Reagan was shot. These videos give you the nostalgia but i bet if most thought about it they wouldn't want to go back to those times getting that whippen from that report card or stealing dad's car whippen lol xyz you get it the now is the best cause that is where we are cheers
if we didn't have the internet though I couldn't make videos honoring the great decade of the 80s pop culture.
Ernest… recommended… 🤔
Ernest Save Christmas is one of my favorites!
@@ChristmasAficionado hey, Vern! 😁
brady xmas only production only thing worth watching the others shows are all trash.
I love old Christmas sitcom episodes. Even the bad ones
