    Frank Marino was one of the baddest ass guitar players of the 70s. Few people even seem to know who he is. Frank Marino's Mahogany Rush LIVE is a must have record for any guitar player. It will absolutely blow you away.

      @@richarddeady6342 Eric Johnson is stunning in a different way....smooth, technique. His takes on Jimi sound the most accurate, but when it comes to loud, down and dirty renditions, SRV and Marino put the rock into rock and roll. Some other cat (names alludes me at present) kinda looks like Jimi and vocally sounds almost identical to him, even plays a white strat upside down, but different hand, but not as powerful as the others

    Frank is unbelievably magnificent!!!!! I can’t believe how under rated he is. This man has such amazing talent, and he makes it look so natural and easy. That’s how great he is, to make it look so effortless!!!!! Frank is right up there with the greats, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, BB King and countless others. HIS Story, about how he began playing, is very very interesting. I love to listen to his interviews. He is not only incredibly talented, he is also a very intelligent man. He deserves far more recognition than he has received in his career. I can’t believe just how underrated he is. You would think that a man with that kind of talent would be known worldwide. Hats off to you Frank Marino!!!!!

    I remember watching Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush doing "Johnnie B. Goode" around 1977 on the Midnight Special, and was blown away then by his sound, speed, and articulation. Frank has ALWAYS been an exceptional player and talent, unfortunately that seems like the last time he was popular in the States; once the shredders came in during the 80's he kinda fell off the map. He was, is, and always will be a Super talent!

    @JohnSmith-oe5kx 2 года назад +8

    Wow. As well as Frank plays, perhaps the most impressive thing is how easy he makes it look. Never loses the pitch or feel or pocket. Some solos are fun because you can hear the guitarist just hanging on for dear life, but Frank gives the impression that he can do anything he wants. As Fil said, he shares that with Moore, SRV, and that top tier.

    I think it's become in Vogue to call Frank Marino underrated. I don't think people who have actually heard him under rate him. One of the all time great acid rock guitarist ever. It's just that his style was never pop so he got very little air play and is not as well-known as some others who are not in his League. With his completely unique sound combining elements of rock, jazz, and unusual Arabic scales all blended with terrific Artistry and Technical Mastery, Frank will still be listened to long after all of us are gone.

      The term "underrated" is overrated. It's kind of like the way people new to seeing/hearing all of these classic players from the 60's and 70's being who are now being called "ahead of their time." That's what people sounded like back then! How can they be ahead of a time that reflects the one that they were living in?

    • @strange-universe
      @strange-universe 4 года назад

      The only tune I ever heard on the radio (think Philly area) was Strange Dreams. How strange of a choice is that? It shows off his writing/composition skills, his vocals are strong on that album. But of all songs to play.. it has no solo work on it. He does some signature riffing in the background, and if you never heard him before, you would not know what an unbelievable talent he is. It's not the song I would use to turn people on to Frank. Fil does a great job on these videos, so I give him a pass on using underrated. It might look that way to someone that wasn't along for the whole ride.

    • @nunyabizness6546
      @nunyabizness6546 4 года назад +3

      Isn't that always the way it seems to be? People who are not into Hendrix always wonder why he's considered such a great guitarist when all they've ever heard is foxy lady, the Wind Cries Mary, and Hey Joe. That seems to be about the only thing that's played on the radio.
      I guess I was lucky growing up in the early days of FM radio, when you could hear hundreds of artists that never made it to the pop station list.

Anyway, I’ve loved that Pat Travers song ever since. Certain songs are just jumbled in my mind from that particular year for some reason. The King Biscuit Flour Hour and Dr Demento (“Fishheads, Fishheads, rolly polly fish heads” lol) are sorely missed.

      Not sure of month , let alone the day of the week. You have a good memory.
      I wasn’t living there. My uncle passed away and i was down there for the funeral. My buddy was there visiting someone
      ( we were both from Queens NY ). He got in touch and said someone gave him tickets.
      The night I went , the singer from Nazareth sat in a chair the entire show. He was involved in a car accident a day or 2 prior.
      I think the 3rd act was Sammy Hagar ?
      The next day I opened the yellow pages and found a local record shop. I had to get a Mahogany Rush album. Took my grandmothers car and found this place. I ask the guy if he had it, he recommended the live album, and when I was paying the guy I was telling how the night before I was blown away. He laughed and said, he can’t sing for shit, but he can sure play the guitar.
      Then he said , thanks for buying my sons album. ??? No kidding.

    Canadian here, really happy to see you cover Frank Marino, one of my favourite guitarists. Owned a vinyl copy of Mahogany Rush IV back in high school. His vocals are also great. Something I've never heard commented on is his great songwriting ability. Love his original material. Would like to request you cover 'Poppy', the live version from this same concert. 'It's Begun to Rain' is another of my favourite tunes of his, a ballad with wonderful feel (in addition to guitar he also plays Mellotron on it). It's got a tasty jazzy outro. I've always appreciated Frank's incorporation of jazz elements in his playing, I find it a unique and very refreshing sound. Seems to be a Canadian thing, am also a big fan of Randy Bachman's jazzy stylings.

      Frank didn't gain the notoriety or fame because he hates the recording industry. He just wants to be on stage and play.

      Gone Postal I can't blame him! I love music and would have loved to be in a great band, playing big concerts and touring all over. I would hate someone else running my life though. Telling me when, what, and where to go every minute of the day. How to write songs and deadlines for them. That part I would hate too!

    I'm just now running across your breakdowns of Frank Marino. I am so glad that someone is giving Frank his due. I first saw him July 4, 1976 at the Bicentennial Jam in Rockford, Illinois. Even though I was aware that he was good, if not great, I was astounded at his mastery of an instrument that I was three years into learning. I got the experience as I held on to the wall in front of the stage for dear life on the banked part of the racetrack. I was lucky to have him AND Rick Derringer perform merely a few feet away. The experience of that day nearly made me quit! haha! The mountain of talent that Frank provided before my eyes was an almost religious event. Thank you for this (and the others) breakdown of a criminally underrated rock guitarist.

    I saw Frank about 1978 then Pat Travers about 1979 and Max Webster around there somewhere. I was completely blown away by all. It was the day when a concert was an event, you bought tickets way early and the suspense built as concert day came closer. I was a mere 16 at the time but loved every minute of it.Thanks for the video and reminding me of how great of these guys are.

    Nothing like some good old fashion Frank Marino free styling. Only saw him 1 time. Toronto at the Gardens. Backing up Ted Nugent...was close as you could ever want to be for a show. The ticket stub says
    Row 1, Seat 55, Centre Floor
    $18.50. Just went threw a hundred old stubs and the prices are insane mid 80's Queen, Zappa, $9.00, Rush, Ac/Dc, D.Purple $7.50. Now over $200 for half ass seats.
    You never forget a show that you sat in the front row especially with Nugent & Marino. What can I say but PRIMO. Marino was killing it and Nuge was swinging it. Loud as hell.
    The old Albums are well represented. One of Frank's i have is recorded at half master speed. All around great Canadain player.

      Think I was a there at that show as well at MLG, think I was in either the "reds" or "golds"(you know what those 'were'. ;) ...I remember the Toronto Star the next day with an article of the show in the Entertainment section, with the title something like "Frank Marino and his 22 Foot Pedals + 2 Guitar Techs"...implying it was all effects, etc. which made him sound good, not just pure technical expertise at the instrument. I started playing guitar around that time, in '77, and Frank was one of my biggest influences at that time. Frank and Johnny Winter both were, both had that endless fluid style.

    •  4 года назад

      Saw Bowie’s thin white duke tour Montreal Forum Feb25 1976. Cost $9.25. Great seats too. Great show.

  • @MartyMurray
    @MartyMurray 5 лет назад +5

    As a Canadian musician, I can definitely say that Frank is truly one of the underrated greats. I would also include Kim Mitchell in with that group. Not the same style as Frank at all. More off the wall and jazzy and poppy at times, but having seen Kim play live numerous times, he's a name a lot of people don't mention in with the best guitar players, and he deserves to be.

    • @vmax4steve524
      @vmax4steve524 5 лет назад

      No, it was from the acid trips he experienced when young that eventually had him laid up in a sanitorium to recover and where he learned to play guitar, the mahogany rush was feeling what it was like to be a tree in the forest, Franks own words.
      He's a great player because his mind was opened up by LSD while he was learning to play, and he learned at an accelerated rate because of it, no one else quite like him for that very reason.

    Frank's putting his own twist to it. Don't know if anyone's noticed but there was a lot of Bob Dylan in Hendrix's voice. He found Dylan's John Wesely Harding in a record store in Greenwich Village or was given an acetate of Dylan's John Westley Harding which ever you want, but he played the hell out it and I think Jimi kind of found his voice after that because there's a lot of Dylan in Jimi's vocals.

    • @wingsofpegasus
      @wingsofpegasus  6 лет назад +1

  • @bctesla
    @bctesla 5 лет назад +5

    And Marino pays homage to the main licks so well , at the outro I’m not sure if deserves to put his own take is the right word ? More like he plays the song so well , that he taps into Jimi’s spirt and improvises as if Hendrix were somehow there and playing it himself .
    Deserves was my initial thought . Mahogany Rush Live was one of the first vinyl albums I ever bought.

    Huge fan of Frank Marino. I had his records back in the 70s and never understood why he wasn't more regarded. But he's always remained relevant as well as being a fantastically fluid virtuoso both harmonically and technically. He plays from the heart and soul, never giving in to gimmicks or rockstar aping.

    Hi
    Thanks for doing this man's passion.
    I met Frank in Chitown in 76 on the M H. IV tour.
    Anytime he's near here, I GO....
    I poured 4 & 5 finger Jack Daniel's for him during performing at a late watering hole Biddy Mulligans.
    And as a friendly person- they
    Just DO NOT GET BETTER!!!
    The great man, Dave Mason, who played acoustic to Jimi Hendrix on the original said this about Frank's cover: the BEST he had ever heard!!!
    Quite a complement from a Hendrix contemporary.
    God bless all.
    Brian.

    Frank Marino, first song I heard him play was from the "Double Live" I assume, ....first opening line of Johnny Be good, and my jaw dropped, it was all this musicality and raw power from hes way of playing the guitar that got me. If you listen to him, he has that signature sound about him, Beast Mode dosent do him justice, hes a force of Nature, a true musician. Im a Huge fan...thanks

    a story about one of the times seeing Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush back in the day, in Montreal. it was at the St. Denis Theatre on a Saturday night, mid 70s, there were four or five of us, we were righteously ready .. and before they came on, the curtain was still closed and we could hear that the band - Frank, the bassist Paul Harwood and the drummer Jimmy Ayoub - were plugging in and getting ready .. and while Frank was noodling a bit, he played a lick or two of Wipe Out, playing around .. and got into it a bit more .. and then the bass picked up on it, playing along .. and a couple moments later the drummer did as well .. and suddenly, there was a full-blast, full volume Frank Marino version of Wipe Out being played, drum solo parts and all .. all while with the curtain still closed! It was crazy and .. thrilling and Hilarious (man, we laughed) .. and at the end of playing the most fantastic version of Wipe Out that I’ve ever heard, again, behind the closed curtain .. Frank yelled into the mic, ‘thank you very much! Good Night!’ .. huge laugh .. and then the curtain opened and they blew us away for the next couple hours. Favorite guitar player EVER. Seeing him again only a couple or so years back, was glad to see he’s as good now, as he was then. Maybe better. Can’t wait for the next time.

    Jimi would've dug Frank, and likely befriended him. Jimi was humble. That's very endearing. He liked Teri Katz's playing, and Rory Gallagher's as well. Frank has his own thing going on, though influenced, but Frank can freakin' play. His first live album should be required listening. Ask Paul Gilbert.
