It's 1976... my brother and I are watching a rerun of Don Kirschner's Rock Concert on TV and see band called "Mahogany Rush" that gets us all excited. A couple days later he goes to Orange Plaza Mall and mistakenly buys a newly released album by another 3 piece band called Rush. He brings home 2112 and we are both blown away! I then went out and found Mahogany Rush IV, which we also think is fantastic! We then spent weeks afterwards swapping the 2 albums back and forth. Ya gotta wonder about it... 2 power trios, both from Canada, both sharing the name "Rush", that released ground shaking albums the same year... 1976 was a good time to be a teenager!

@@mmk7340 thanks... my brother was so excited when he came home... I said "that's the wrong band- we were watching a band called Mahogany Rush". Decided to listen to his "mistake" anyway and became instant fans. Discovered 2 great "Rush" bands in the span of a week.

There is no weak Frank Marino album, he’s so damn good. I’m gonna go with The Power Of Rock And Roll. Ain’t Dead Yet has to be one of the best guitar oriented, rippin, hard rock songs of all time!

*****CORRECTION**** My #7 pick is 'Eye of the Storm', not 'Full circle' as I stated. For some reason I jotted down the wrong album title on my notes and proceeded to say the album title wrong twice...apologies! It was also released in 2000 not 2005. This is what happens when you tape first thing in the morning...

Rock's most underrated guitar player in my view, for me What's Next is my favourite album. I first heard Frank in 1978, when I bought California Jam 2 album, ironically because it had Ted Nugent and Santana on it, but it was Frank that blew me away. From that moment I went back and got his catalogue, havent missed one since

My first taste of Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush came in 1978 with the incredible and highly underrated 'LIVE' album. My mind was blown again by an incredible guitarist, the first being Hendrix, and I played that album to death, and I mean the grooves were worn down all the way.
Tell Frank to put out a new edition of the 1978 'LIVE' album and add more tracks, I know there's a lot of early stuff out there that could make this a double album, which we should have got the first time ;) great ranking once again Pete, stay safe and keep rockin'

About his last studioalbum Eye of The Storm you say it's from 2005, 15 years old. Actually it's 20 years old. It was selfreleased in 2000, reissued in 2001 and the 2005 version is another German reissue.

This is your post that caught my attention, I've always been a fool for Mahogany Rush, thanx. The results among Mahogany Rush albums I listened to then are right here with yours, this we share very much in common. Where I eventually fell off was after the World Series Of Rock event he played at. First of 6 superb acts, played for just a little over an hour right around noon while doing his utmost to embarrass the other 5 main acts. 5 of the main acts did show out that day due to Franks efforts, guess who didn't? They played fourth no less right up against the headliner.

Frank could never top this performance at Cleveland Stadium, I seldom pursued his music after this event, I felt he'd showed us all once and for all.

i have Marino's first 3 albums on vinyl and the forth on vinyl as well--he played a lot in Detroit back in the day. He def. was out of the Hendrix mode...and so be it!! Great guitar player!

Frank is dealing with health issues and is retiring from touring, good thoughts toward you, Mr. Marino. Not a bad album in the bunch, but my favorite is World Anthem, and live of course.

Looooove Frank and Mahogany Rush !!!
    IV
    World Anthem
    Strange Universe
    Juggernaut
    What's Next
    Child of the Novelty
    Tales of the Unexpected
    Eye of the Storm
    Maxoom
    Full Circle
    From the Hip
Don't own The Power of Rock And Roll
If including the two stellar live albums the order would be different, cause Frank is a force of nature live !!!
Had posted this before finishing the video, would be super stoked for a new Frank album for sure !!!!

@@FURDOG1961 yeah I have heard the entire album, in fact I am now not covinced I don't own that Strange Universe/TPoRnR double cd, but some of my collection is mysteriously missing (thinks it's in storage following a break up a while back), but I love Ain't Dead Yet, It's A RIPPING track, fiercely driving, and the guitar fills and solo (that somewhat unusual tapping section and killer by Jimmy Ayoub are not typical) are screaming, but then that's pretty much every Marino track !!!

My Dad worked for CBS Records. In 1976, he brought home a couple of MAHOGANY RUSH LPs for me. He was playing a show @ Calderone Hall on Long Island. I was 12. Dad knew I was a fan & I guess he thought it was a good idea to drop me off & pick me up after the show. But, what is going on here... as I looked around & watched everyone with a baggie on their lap rolling funny looking cigarettes? Wow! I had my face melted off so young! What a life changing night! Fan forever! Can't wait till this f'n virus is over so we all can experience "greatness" once again!!

You and I are so connected about this ranking. I'd only differ with I'd put World Anthem as number 1 and Mahongany Rush 4 as second. Thanks for the review. Very good.

Once again Beaker Street from KAAY Little Rock introduce me to "Strange Universe" and Columbia Record club offered "Child of Novelty" & "Maxoom'. So I had the trio on ...8-track tape when "IV" was released. So naturally these 4 are my top 4. But as you said Pete. Not a bad one in the bunch. Now that he finally released the Live DVD after 14 years maybe he's got time to hit the studio again.

First I’ve got to say that I really love the first livealbum. It ranks among the best livealbums of all time for me. The two songs from ”IV”, ”The answer” and ”Dragonfly” are fantastic. That said, here is my studio album ranking of Marino/Mahogany Rush:
    1. Juggernaut
    2. Tales of the unexpected
    3. What’s next
    4. The power of rock and roll
    5. Strange universe
    6. Child of the novelty
    7. IV
    8. World anthem
    9. Maxoom
I have not listened enough to the newer stuff to be able to rank it.

I like them all but Juggernaut and Power are at the top. Free and Stories and Ain't Dead Yet and Young Man are fucking awesome songs. Those songs and Something Coming are Way energize me in a spiritual sort of way. I can't think of any other rock music that has this effect on me. Frank's entire catalogue is epic. The man is an orator of our times. He can write songs, sing and play like few others and he's prolific. I feel sorry for fans of rock music that are missing out.

Outside of Park West in Chicago 3/3/83 talking about this. Some guys said What's Next. I said Juggernaut, then What's Next. Power of R+R had a few killer tunes, specially Ain't Dead Yet. Child of the Novelty. of the 3 earliest ones. I made a compilation tape from IV and World Anthem. Live was a separate thing. Full Circle and from the Hip. I got the 83 show that was such great quality and that's 2 1/2 hours of perfection starting with my yell and Down, Down, Down. Tons of great stuff. Saw him 5 times from 83-2000 and emailed him right before that and told him to get his ass back on the road...and he did. Love ya Frank.

Every time I read or hear about Frank there's something about Jimi Hendrix in there... I can see why some would see that after a few very specific songs, but not the catalogue in general. People don't acknowledge how much of an original this guy is... His SG tone is dense but saucy, and his playing is shredded but with fluidity. His spacey mechanics and use of effects are one of a kind and ideal considering how much prog and jazz there is in his songs. Those are way too many elements of individuality to dismiss Frank as being derivative of Hendrix...
