This is where Affinity Designer's limitations start to show. Illustrator (a program I used for years and have ditched) is excellent at putting patterns on a curve, and it's a very useful feature in a large number of situations. This Designer workaround is barely functional in a very limited number of ways. Furthermore, Designer has no easy way of cutting paths open. Nor are there blends or the ability to put blended shaped on a curve. These are all shortcomings this program needs to address because, for me, Designer, of the 3 Affinity programs, is the one most lagging behind its Adobe counterpart. It's a poor substitute for Illustrator... a shame because I want it to succeed.
Fantastic! An excellent work-around for a much-desired but probably never-added feature of AD! I'm also noticing all the different accents and nationalities of people on RUclips and it makes me realize that it's also a win for multiculturalism, with people from all over the world helping each other!
This is the best workaround by far for this issue. My object assets have 3 layers so I can turn them on/off by grouping or ungrouping them, then show and hid them by name , color ect. . I loved this workaround to get them on a curve quickly and accurately. But found that the "art text layer" would allow not me to select the individual object asset layers or allow use my show and hide trick while they were contained within the art text group. The solution was to copy all of my grouped objects within the "art text " layer and paste them into a new layer, then hide the previous art text layer. Now they all function normally as individual or grouped objects again.
Great idea Rory and thanks for sharing! (Have already done a quick test and this technique obviously has some creative and very practical uses). Appreciate your videos/tutorials, as I'm sure do so many other Affinity users! Regards, Terry.
Nice tutorial - I was just wandering recently, if this would be possible in Affinity, because in InDesign the concept of "anchored elements“ (within a string of text) is somewhat related and there offers quite similar possibilities. Even without the symbols part.
Thank you for your great video's. Have you tried to move duplicate etc the shape with the symbols on it? Here every time I try to do that the shape will get different curves
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work on either my Windows AD 1.6.5 or iPad 1.1. I create a simple path, put text on it, create a star, copy it, then select the texr and hit paste. Nothing happens. Look like one other commenter said there was a change to AD?
Very nice well done....but Affinity needs to up their game ......Width tool please for example, stroke path maybe.... we are trying to get away from Adobe guys, help a designer out!!!
Yip, there are some features that I expected should have been included a while back already, but I guess I'm such a rebel against Adobe, that I'll wait out the storm, lol. I know I'm a bit over board, but I have the same relationships with, Android/Windows/Linux instead off Apple. Then Jitsi instead of Zoom And the lists hoo on, anyhow, it is what it is.
@Bryana S & @xaviervanegasdesign I think it only works on custom paths. I tried using this technique on a basic, stock shape (a reshaped circle), and ran into the problem you describe. Pasting it into a closed custom path made the shape show up right where the text cursor was.
Tell me about detail information how to work on page when you have many artboards in document, if you select means ctrl a its select everything in document..? Or just select artwork inside page
@@RoryTownsendTV I'm trying to find out how I can animate electricity flowing through a wire...and I have seen some animations that take dashed lines and move them around a path (marching ants)...maybe your stars along their path can be animated to move around that path?
Well that fantastic shit doesn't work any more. Some bullshit offset,"pin" hoax they have going now. Thanks for Trying Rory! Infinity Programers suck...
Thank you for this tutorial Rory. I would never have worked this out myself. So much skill and experience must have gone into this.

Fully agree on every point (hehe)
How do you feel about V2? I don't have it yet but I will.
Helpful workaround. These type of tutorials are what I'm looking for as I have transitioned out of the Adobe Suite. Thanks for posting.

Another very informative and practical tutorial...thank you!
This was super handy thank you! I can scale & rotate each object on the path to add more variety and that made it easier to create a rose wreath.
Your tutorials are excellent. Thank you.
This is one feature that I desperately wish was built in, but this is a phenomenal workaround! Thanks for sharing!
Great stuff - you manage to incorporate a whole bunch of useful techniques in your videos.

I love your videos, congratulations, and thanks for sharing a little bit of your knowledge about this software.
Thank you for sharing your technique.
Yet another brilliant Tut. Thanks.
Great video! Thank you for sharing! Jason
Nice technique and explanation
to replace a Symbol, you can double click the symbol and past another shape into this symbol, and then delete the old shape in the symbol.
Awesome tutorial Rory Thank You :)
Phenomenal, thank you so much!!

is there a way to make the "text" a specific distance from the line and have a specific spacing between them?

not sure what I'm doing wrong--when I paste my symbol on the text line, it appears far above the path and starts moving in the reverse direction!
Same here!

Works! Great video thanks!

amazing!
What about "Multiple Stretched" option in inkscape.
thanks !! very helpful ;-)
Hi, can you animate that like in marching ants?
Not sure I understand the question 🙂

Easy fix …use Adobe programs
