I misstated the size on the metal rod. It's actually 1/4 inch, not 1/8. Sorry!

MADE A MISTAKE. The metal rod I used for the ram rod is 1/4 inch, not 1/8. 3/8 inch would also work though.
I use a hairdryer to warm the ferule up if it's a tight fit on the shaft, makes it super easy to seat the ferule.
As an older retired guy on a fixed income, DIY is the way to go for me. I have been a DIY guy for many years, but now even more so than ever. Great video and thank you for sharing how you made your home made tools!
AJ,,,,,,GREAT STUFF! NOW we just need a DIY video on how to make that "Loft and Lie" machine and a "Frequency Meter".on the kitchen table------
Great video. A tip on the strap hinge if it swings too freely. Take the pin out and put a small bend in the pin with a hammer. Have done this many times on door hinges to help keep older doors in place and not swinging freely. Doesn’t take much.
Learned this from an old carpenter, what a tremendous tip. He also taught me how to bend the hinges to square up sagging doors
Steel paint trays work great to catch grip solvent.
I have no ferule issues as I just warm them first with hot water.
I am an engineer this is exactly what I would do. Often what you make will be better than what you can buy.
I built my own head puller, for my ramrod I used threaded 5mm Stainless studding, I build my own measuring tool very similar yo yours. Good job.
Great video! I searched through all of your earlier videos because I saw this ruler on your channel but could not find it. Thanks, now I have it!
Really enjoy your video’s and want to thank you for sharing your tricks with us. Great job and thank you again
Great video!! I just found your channel. You have just become my #1 go to guy on anything golf repair.
Terrific advice. If I lived anywhere near you I would definitely give you my business as you seem to be a very decent chap.
Even though I love to learn to do these things myself. I also live a little too far, in the U.K. I think its great that you pass on all this advice, at no cost, to help the rest of us to learn and enjoy the knowledge you have. Thank you so much.
Thanks. My dream is to open a shop in St. Andrews one day. See how this first shop goes.
@@EFGMC hope your dream comes true, if it does I'll travel up from the North of England to meet you and shake your hand.
@@EFGMC Best of luck. If you are able to open that shop I would definitely make the journey to visit.
Thank you so much. I have learner so much from your videos, keep them coming my friend.
That ruler one is so clutch.
This ruler idea is brilliant!
I built my ruler yesterday. Thanks. Found out my new (used) driver is an inch shorter then my previous driver.
I was given a fancy adjustable club ruler, but the tray where the club head rests has a bend in it. I could never get an accurate length. I’m buying a strap hinge to rebuild it! 👍🏼
Great video. I built a ruler similar to what was suggested here. Works well, However, ended up with something like an eighth of an inch discrepancy with what was measured vs. what was real. ended up as a result of (I believe) the gap that was created when moving the hinge from 90 degrees to 60 degrees or whatever. just a little bit extra gap throwing the true measurement off.
I love this channel!
Read all the comments, can't believe I'm the first person to laugh at "ramrod" and mention the cult classic Super Troopers... car ramrod. Lmao. Now I need to go watch it hahaha EDIT Also great video, need to make one of those rulers
Great DIY golf tips.
Outstanding recommendations!
I use a socket piece as a ferrul installer haha and a rubber mallet
a deep hex socket works also
The hinge on this is offset from the end of the rule by nature. So the more open the hinge the bigger the gap will end up being between the end of the rule and the reference surface. I’m guessing this is small enough to not overly matter so long as it’s consistent and you’re not right up against length limits (in which case you’d probably want a more precise tool anyway)?
❤❤❤ Love DIY solutions. My kinda video. 😎👍
Love your videos. I’m about to retire and planning on club making as a hobby thanks to you. Heading to Lowes today! Question: is it possible to re-use old graphite shafts?
Yes. If they are removed correctly they can be reused. Need a shaft puller if you are going to be doing it though to ensure you pull the head off straight without any twisting.
@@EFGMC Thanks!
For the feral sitting pool. Why not just using 2 x 4 block of wood and drill hole 1 1/4 inches or medium here or less and then you tap the sparrow on Paramount. I don’t know of any temporary parcels that are less than 1 1/4 inches. Lotta the Japanese wedges are 1 1/2 inches.
Thanks for 3 excellent tips. I watch all your videos and always learn a lot. A quick question: I’m building some irons using lightweight (95g) steel shafts and by adding 10g brass tip weights can get swingweight up to D0, but I need 4 more grams in the head to get to my preferred D2-3. 10g tip weights seem to be the largest. Lead tape is the obvious solution, but does anything more elegant occur to you? Thanks!
Not unless you get heavier heads to start with. Never assume though that just because you liked D2 in a different setup that you will still like it in this new variation. I would build them at D0 or at least one club, and go to the range with some lead tape to see if D2 is still the best option with this setup.
@@EFGMC Great idea. Thanks so much.
The rod looks more like 3/16” or 1/4” , not 1/8” dia.
What epoxy did you use to glue the hinge on the ruler? I used golf epoxy like you said and it broke right off. Mixed all correctly. Sanded it down also.
What brand do you recommend?
Like the ruler idea. USGA standard is to measure the club at 60* angle. Wonder if you could permanently fix the hinge at 60*.
You could. The only time it matters though is when building a driver close to the legal length limit.
@@EFGMC I thought oems also built clubs to the 60* lie spec. So I normally use that to check specs as well as when I built any clubs.
@@erock1070 Can't answer that. Every OEM measures differently and has a different standard. Throw in the current lack of quality control and it's a complete mess. Consistency is the best method. Whatever you do, always do it that way.
Any tips for measuring Loft and Lie?
Effective and easy solution for the ruler… I like the hinge idea! I made one with 2 pieces of wood and wing nut to hold my angle. I live in Johns Creek, where is your new space in ATL located?
Going to be in Decatur. Hoping to be up in July.
@@EFGMC 👍🏼 Congratulations and all the best! I will certainly stop by once open… maybe get a loft & lie check on my irons. Those machines are quite expensive! I have slowly amassed most of the other equipment and did lots of practice on Goodwill bargain bin clubs before I ever touched my clubs.
Thanks for making this video👍I’m trying to weight some graphite iron shafts and swingweight sitting at c9 so going to use some lead powder as don’t like lead tape especially the amount I would need. Only thing is traditional cork doesn’t fit! What would you use on a narrower shaft ?
Go to Golfworks.com
They sell corks for both steel and graphite shafts.
Be aware you are going to likely need a lot more weight using powder in graphite shafts vs lead tape because the internal diameter is narrow and the weight sits farther away from the head of the club.
Overall weight and feel is more important than swing weight. Don't get hung up on it.
Great Vid, out of interest when measuring a golf club is that with the grip on or off or doesnt it make that much difference? Thanks
Most people and OEMs will measure to the very end of the grip, but some don't. There is no standard for this stuff so you just need to make sure you always use the same method and measure against someones existing clubs for reference.
Good Video AJ.
Do you have any tips to get a grip started over the end of the shaft? I use Midsize Golf Pride Tour Wraps with 3 wraps of tape, but I also build in a rib on the underside of the shaft. I use grip solvent, but it's pretty tough to persuade the narrow end of the grip to start over the widest part of the shaft.
Thanks.
You can still buy a grip install tool I believe. It was originally made to help install Taylormade grips over the old Bubble shaft that had a .950 tip.
Other than that, just use plenty of good solvent and start at a 45 degree angle until the grip goes over the shaft tip.
I also find that if you pinch the grip about 3/4" from its open end sometimes that makes it easier to get the grip started all the way around the butt end of the shaft.
What epoxy do you prefer to use?
I think the ruler and hinge is a great idea. The length should be accurate but how accurate will the lie be due to the ruler with the hinge under it?
You just use the hinge to match the specific lie of that club. This is obviously different from the 60 degree rule used by the USGA / R&A however it has minimal impact. Did a video showing this as well.

Great channel! New subscriber! Plan to swap out shafts on my irons. I was fitted with 85g graphite shafts, but I hate them…can’t feel the club anywhere in the swing and feel like I can’t get the club on the ball anymore. After testing a number of iron shafts, settled on AMT White S300 shafts. My only issue is I don’t have a graphite shaft puller…do you have a preferred/recommended work around for that, or do I need to bite the bullet and just get one…or I guess I can have my local Golf Galaxy just pull the shafts for me and I’ll do the rest…Thanks!
If you are wanting to save the graphite shafts then you will need a puller or have someone do it.
If you plan on trashing them, then you can just heat and twist out. It will destroy them fyi.
@@EFGMC I’d love to trash them as I hate them…but they are LA Golf Tour AXS 85S shafts that were $150 per shaft upcharge! Think I’ll save them for when I can’t swing as fast anymore! LOL…or sell them…Thank you!
Use a divot tool for ferrules.
golf repair websites hate him
Do you have any DIY projects to determine club weight, adjust loft/lie?
DIY bending is tricky. Here are a couple videos I did that are related.

Do you know what size drill bit you can use to drill the hole in the ferrule install block?
3/8 inch will give you a large enough hole for any iron shaft you want and still provide a shelf for .335 wood ferrules unless they are really small.
Do I have to use the stepped ferrule on Pxg irons
No, just use a brass shim. Same as Ping.
Can I measure the loft of my irons without expensive equipment?

Better than basic.
Hi AJ,
What is the width of that 48” long ruler?
Thank you!!
About 2 inches.
Thanks AJ!!
You’re the best
Imagine making a loft lie or bending machine for cheap? Wow.
Hi - are you sure that's 1/8" It looks more like 1/4", and after going to Lowe's to buy a piece, the 1/8" seems very flimsy ... it also looks smaller than what your holding.
Oops, you are exactly right. It is 1/4 inch. See if I can edit that and repost.
@@EFGMC i am building thise tools - i got a 48” rule from habit frieght for about $6
@@philk4645 Wow. I should have gone there instead of Home Depot!
I just built the ruler setup with the hinge and its definitely not accurate. Putters that are 35" are measuring 34.5. I have to have the hinge almost at 90 degree to have an accurate reading which just isn't right.
Putters are not measured the same by manufacturers. Get a 35 inch Ping and compare to a 35 inch Odyssey. Unless they have changed things in the past year or so, they won't be the same.
did anyone else get totally distracted by the stormtrooper dog picture in the background?
Good luck finding a 48" ruler for $12 in Europe. The going rate seems to be 40-50 euros 😡
