    Great video AJ! I like it.... Such a simple inexpensive process you can do at home. I will use this as my First Diagnosis Step to see if I have issues before going to a professional for EXACT fitting and adjustments.
    I also recognize that what looks like a lie when Stationary may not be the same as a Dynamic lie (when in motion swinging) as your body shifts at impact, some flatter, others, more upright. Your video is great at capturing the correct Dynamic version. 👏

    I’ve been reading that a straight up and down line is less important than the desired ball flight. It’s ok for the club to be a little flat or upright (not more than a few degrees) if the flight is what you’re looking for.

    It is pretty easy to make a backyard net using PVC pipe for the frame and either a bought net or a sheet of fabric. A grommet tool makes attaching the sheet of fabric to the frame more durable. I use 1 inch diameter pvc pipe for the frame and a net my former employer, a custom clubmaker, gave me. I attached the net with 12 inch zip ties on the top and sides. A driving range mat is expensive, but unnecessary if you set the immitation grass sheet on dirt. If the dirt is already flat, just lay the immitation grass out and you are done. Concrete to too hard without padding. A.J.'s mat has padding. If the dirt is not level and/or rocky, dig a 2 inch deep hole the size of the immitation grass piece, sift it to get the rocks out, level out the dirt with a rake and lay the immitation grass on top. If it is SLIGHTLY lumpy, that is more realistic and better practice. I bought imitation grass 5' x 7' for $1 per square foot - under $40. It works great. A decent driving range mat costs hundreds of dollars.

Random question.. if youve had your clubs adjusted to a certain lie from the factory (e.g. new irons at +1degree upright), can you still have them rebent again, eg to 1 degree flat ? I.e. is there a limit in regard to how many times you can adjust the lies without weakening the structural integrity of the club?

    • @EFGMC

      It's probably around 1/2 inch per degree of lie, so if you are marking the sole an inch towards the toe, might go with 2 degrees upright. This can occasionally be a bit off however if you are coming more severely from in to out or out to in. You may want to just do the line test also just to make sure we are close.

    From your experience, is it something that does vary when using different sets of irons? Say, your current irons are 2 degrees upright the line is straight, and you want to purchase another set of irons. Would ordering them 2 degrees upright as well be a safe bet?

    • @EFGMC
      @EFGMC  Год назад

      Tricky question. First thing to check is that the factory lie angles are the same for both clubs because they might not be. Also want to check the length because again they may be different. Changes in SW, static weight can also influence it.
      If you are moving between different models in the same brand or similar style of head (ie blade, players distance, etc) it will probably be pretty close.

    We need to set lie angle to +/- 1/2 degree. While the line can be measured to this amount on the club face, But there is no way we can combine the lay of the land and the verticality of the golf ball on the ground to even a couple of degrees. Is it good if you are off by 4 or five degrees? Yes this will help. The only real way is to watch the ball flight.

    Most adjustments to lie angles are in the 1 to 2 degree range. I've found this method doest work that well because 1) I might not draw a straight line 2) I cannot position the ball on the ground so the line is perfectly vertical 3) My path and face are not always zero and zero, if they are not the line will not be vertical 4) I can't tell whether the line transfered to the club face is vertical or tilted by 1 or 2 degrees. For people that have a plastic chopping board at home, these work perfectly as lie boards.

    That iron you use looks very flat on the bottom (@4:40) which in my opinion is not a good design. Contrast that to the new Stealth irons that have a slight curvature on the bottom of the head. That curvature is there to account for small inaccuracies in the lie angle, and for various non-flat lies on the course. So yes, you should adjust the lie properly, as close as you can (knowing it will never be perfect) but the club needs to have some curvature on the bottom too. Interesting that not all manufacturers have curvature on the bottom, even the major ones are different (Hot Metals = Launcher XL = very flat, Rogue=Stealth =curved, for example).

    • @EFGMC
      @EFGMC  Год назад +1

      That can play a role but the primary reason we adjust lie angle is not for turf interaction, it's for face angle. Incorrect lie angle at impact will cause the ball to start offline to your target. The more loft the club has, the greater this effect.

    Correct lie angle of your entire set,anywhere, anytime without any tools in a few minutes.
    As George Knudsen stated in his classic video, The Natural Golf Swing,
    golf clubs are designed to be the same height above the ground at the butt end, (when soled level on the ground). ie our hands are in the same position for every golf club.
    Find the club you hit best, most consistently, then note height of butt end is from the ground with sole level to the ground. Every other club should have butt the same height from the ground. if not, bend until every club has butt the same height from the ground(floor)
    We are forever indebted. Thank you, George.

    Over the years, I have found that irons go out of lie angle more often than I would have thought.
    A video by George Knudson, stated that the butt of the club is the same height off the ground through the set. This led me to conclusion that if I aligned my clubs with soles flat on a level surface all of the butt ends should be the same height from the floor. Once you find the ideal lie angle for yourself
    simply use the height of the butt end from the ground as the template for all the others and bend where necessary. cheers

    Why not just get closer or further away ? Better surely to work with what youve got .
    From a learning point of view anyway .

    Ben Hogan played with irons 6 degrees flat! The toe cuts and the heel digs. Hogan took half the course out of play.

    Lie angle is useless in terms of physics. You set your lie angle on a flat surface. Then you go to the golf course where there isn’t a single flat surface in sight. Not even a tee box is perfectly flat.

      Great thought, but I think this process has validity as an insight. I'd rather have a proper fit club on a poor lie than a improperly fitted club on a poor lie that increases the variables for errors.

    Good information, but this should be no more than a 4 or 5 minute video.
